While
exploring
Thailand
I
saw
elephants
and
instantly
got
excited,
until
I
looked
closer
at
something
I
couldn't
unsee.
Elephants
were
chained
up
on
a
small
lead.
I
knew
it
was
a
money
maker
in
Thailand.
I
was
mad
the
instant
I
saw
it.
I
did
research
and
they
advertise
a
sanctuary
emphasizing
no
chains,
no
ropes
or
riding.
THAT
is
where
I
wanted
to
go.
The
Elephant
Sanctuary
we
could
bath
them
and
feed
them
while
taking
beautiful
photography.
At
least
they
were
somewhat
"free"
there.
We
decided
to
go
the
last
day
of
vacation.
When
discovering
the
sanctuary
was
only
in
the
morning
and
afternoon
I
was
bummed,
but
felt
bad
our
taxi
driver
brought
us
to
what
she
assumed
we
wanted.
A
place
they
go
trekking:
up
to
an
hour
and
a
half.
I
convinced
myself
to
try
it,
since
we
were
already
there.
I
didnt
want
to
waste
the
taxi
driver's
time,
as
she
was
good
to
us
our
whole
trip.
We
got
welcomed
in
very
fast
and
was
offered
a
$30
30
minute
ride
or
wait
2
hours
to
bath
them
for
$83.
I
picked
the
cheapest,
fastest
one
but
as
I
approached
the
top
of
the
stairs,
I
had
instant
regret
as
I
sat
on
the
elephant,
strapped
myself
in,
and
watched
a
worker
sit
on
her/his
head.
The
moment
we
started
to
move,
I
cried,
I
sobbed
like
a
big
baby.
I
tried
to
hold
back
tears
but
the
moment
we
started
to
ride
this
beautiful
creature
up
a
long,
hot,
cement
path
I
instantly
wanted
to
turn
around
and
tell
every
worker
my
exact
thoughts.
I
daydreamed
of
sneaking
back
at
night
and
cutting
all
the
chains.
The
weight
on
my
shoulders
felt
heavier
than
the
500
plus
pounds
on
this
poor
elephant's
back.
I
have
forever
adored
elephants
so
while
balancing
ourselves
on
an
unsteady
seat
on
his/her
back,
we
didnt
let
5
minutes
pass
before
asking
the
tour
guide
to
bring
us
back.
The
elephant
had
a
thin
rope
around
his
neck,
pits
and
even
under
his
tail.
It
was
hot,
humid
and
he
had
to
be
bribed
to
continue
walking.
This
poor
creature
only
recieved
about
6
small
bananas
and
a
quick
spray
down
as
his
payment.
I
could
tell
the
elephant
did
not
want
to
do
this.
I
feel
like
a
piece
of
dirt
supporting
such
behaviors.
It
was
so
sad
and
it
broke
my
heart.
I
grew
up
an
animal
lover
and
I
will
die
one
as
well.
Eephants
are
considered
good
luck
in
Thailand.
They
should
be
worshipped
not
chained
up
and
forced
to
trek.
It
is
about
80-90
degrees
every
day
at
80%
humidity,
yet
there
is
tons
of
forest
they
could
utilized
just
for
them.
Even
the
monkeys
have
their
own
island
and
they
want
to
fight
you
half
the
time
!!
Lol
Elephants
are
so
intelligent
AND
they
think
we're
cute!
The
happiest
elephants
I've
seen
in
Thailand
was
the
necklace
I
wore,
the
statues
around
the
towns
and
the
souvenirs
I
purchased.
We
need
to
stand
up.
We
need
to
stop
supporting
such
acts
of
abuse.
If
everyone
could
just
see
things
from
their
point
of
view,
these
places
would
no
longer
get
business
and
shut
down
forever.
Elephants
need
love,
care
and
to
be
with
their
families.
Not
chained
up
under
a
hot
tarp
waiting
for
the
next
ride
just
to
recieve
a
small
snack
and
quick
hose
down.
We
as
people
are
powerful
and
we
need
to
stand
up
for
those
who
cant
stand
up
for
themselves.
We
need
to
be
their
voices.
We
need
to
stop
supporting!
