This has to be one of my favorite historical places in Berlin for me. The reason is that it conveys the message of that cold war era Berlin where we had divisions and how things have improved for good now. It gives me hope that if people get united then we can definitely break all the borders and u it together as a single nation comprising of different race, ethnicities and religions. This is a must visit especially during the day so you can capture better pictures 📸

I would have given 5 stars 🌟 for this very important site in history if not for the many vendors selling their knock off wears of the Cold War. It would be great to have it just as it is. In any case we loved being there as its another bucket list visit

Despite this place probably being overrated I really enjoyed my time here, so much that I can’t not give it five stars. The historic significance of this place and all the little details that they’ve added made it a really cool experience. Also make sure to checkout the museum gift shop, best souvenir gift shop I’ve seen in a long time

Interesting place to visit linked to the history of Germany. Do visit the black box on the corner. It has all interesting facts and stories about the time of cold war

Really not much to see but so iconic. If you were around during the cold war, even the last bit of the 80s it's a place to must see, if nothing else just to say you've been. Hard to believe that it wasn't that long ago it was a dark place. Now I didn't even realise I approached it from the East side of Berlin with KFC and McDonald's signs where guards used to patrol with guns. There is an experience you can visit but it was closed when we got there.

Well we went Wednesday and Saturday. Scary history that if certain people get their way will rapidly return. Walls only help when they are part of a house! If you're of a certain age then this place sums up the Cold War.

It’s very interesting to see that was such a hot point of Cold War conflict now has a McDonald’s :-) we didn’t have a chance to go into the museum, but we did read the sign boards and look at the exhibit in the free freedom plaza that is near checkpoint Charliegh. Also, it was cool to see that they’re buildings in the 1980 photograph that are still standing where they were.

What a fantastic experience seeing history up close. The museum is amazing too and tells so many stories of people's lives and struggles during the years between the wall going up and then coming down again. A must see part of any trip to Berlin.

Definitely one of the top places in Berlin to visit. It is basically an outdoor monument. You can visit anytime of day or night. There are several museums in the area if you want to learn more. We had some great photo opportunities. And it was interesting to learn about this site. Consider visiting before or after other things open if you have no interest in the museums.

Interesting place. Very commercial with souvenir shops every where. Be care crossing the street as there are no lights and bikes/cars have the right of way.

An iconic part of Berlin's history- very busy area with tourists so may need to wait to get photo taken at the hut. Lots of information boards around the area and photos from before the fall of the wall. Lots of touristy souvenir shops in area and the Checkpoint hsrlie Museum ( very worth a visit!)

Amazing, a must see in Berlin! Also has some cards inside explaining the history and the street is very cool, also!

Must visit when in Berlin - makes the feeling of separation and reunification all the more real. Be sure to check out the installation of the Soviet soldier and American soldier looking in on the two quarters on two sides of the road. Even more relevant in today's times of war and peace.

I have seen a lot of documentaries about cold War and world War 2. I was thrilled to visit that place. People went through hard times of that era and this place is a symbol of the suffering of those people. Luckily the Berlin wall is no longer there and all of that became part of the history. Touring in that area you will find a lot of monuments of the west and east of Germany. There are a lot of texts explaining the stories behind the monuments and the different history periods of the place. Highly recommended place to visit in Berlin.

Visiting Checkpoint Charlie was a really historic moment for me. Stepping in and outside the then US territory. The historical significance of this area holds a great value to lovers of history. I’ll recommend to anyone to visit.

Wasn’t as epic as I had assumed. Loads of tourists taking pics but not really much there but for free to stand there it was great. Shame the corporates are in the background like McDonald’s. But we got the just of the location and feel for it. Poignant.

5€ for the museum to read a bunch of posters... you can read all of it for free on Wikipedia... a point in history is a very nice sight indeed. Can't spend the whole afternoon here but it's a great stop along the way.

BEWARE OF THE THE SYNDICATE HERE…..!!! I witnessed a couple of tourists being robbed of their money by a syndicate comprising a couple ( well dressed) and other accompanying men. They play a small game and attract attention of tourists. They try to bet 50 Euros and take tourist in the game and then forcibly take money from tourists through a trap. The syndicate members frequent the shops and cafés in the vicinity. One of the Syndicate member disappeared in the cafe after robbing 150 Euros from a tourist.( Police entered the cafe and apprehended him) One of the tourist called a Police and the syndicate vanished in seconds…! The syndicate usually appear at evening time. Be careful and don’t involve in any street play or talk to any strangers. Take photos and enjoy the historical landmark. Avoid the syndicate.

A place that is on every tourists list of monuments to visit in Berlin. However it was so crowded and has become a touristic photo attraction. Also located on a very busy road (cars) and street sellers. Across the road you can find information on the history of the wall, which was very intersting to read.

Germans handle tourism with dignity regardless of a little bit of mimicry and soviet hats, this is proof. It could be more informative, but not too bad.

It was nice learning the history of the checkpoint, but today it's too much of a tourist site and a lot of the historical importance has been lost. If you want a good photo, go early in the morning, otherwise you're stuck with the crowds of people.

Great place to visit and learn a little more about the Berlin Wall. There are food trucks there and a small museum inside that is run by donations (but it quite offers you a lot of information). Also, if you want the famous picture, try to take it during the week

Just something for the current generation to get a glimpse of the Cold War era. Glad it all ended. It’s crowded most of the times. Make sure that nobody scams you saying, 2 euros per picture (of the site). Disappointed that mafia groups lurk around such historic sites to rort tourists.

Cool scenery being at such a monumental place. For those who don’t know, this was a border crossing during the Cold War between East and West Berlin. It was constructed in 1961. The guy on the picture is Jeff Harper who was the last U.S. allied soldier in Berlin in 1994.

I enjoyed my time here, as we passed by this landmark during my walking tour. I would recommend to go on a tour or at least have some knowledge/context on what took place and why this landmark is important. I think without the context, it would be less enjoyable. However, there is a mini gallery/timeline outside across the street with the history of the Berlin Wall to visit if you need more information as well as a paid museum.

The hottest point where East and West Berlin come into contact with each other. Here you can learn symbolic photographs of the soldiers of the East and West side, the items from that day, the stories at the checkpoint. You can learn the history of the region visually and in writing by going to the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, which is just 50 meters away.

I was with a guided tour of the city and got to see the American sector of Berlin, and what I think is super fascinating is there are these little cobblestone lines across the area and that are actually the lines of where the Berlin wall was what it was standing. It’s super cool because you could just jump over it back-and-forth and be on the east side then the west side the east side then the west side of Berlin

All I saw was a tourist area. Yes, there is the checkpoint, there are some memorials, and temporary exhibitions, but it somehow doesn't make any significant meaning. Not a place to find anything but stores and semi-museums. There was also another point at the rear that didn't become as known... I don't know. Seems like a tourist attraction rather than a historical landmark.

Checkpoint Charlie was one of the most iconic border crossings between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Today, it is a popular tourist destination, and for good reason. The site is well-maintained and informative, and it provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Berlin Wall. The museum at Checkpoint Charlie is a great place to learn about the history of the border crossing. There are exhibits on the Berlin Wall, the Cold War, and the people who tried to cross the border illegally. There is also a replica of the guardhouse that was used by the Americans. Outside the museum, there is a large concrete slab that marks the former border between East and West Berlin. You can also see the watchtowers that were used by the East German border guards. If you are interested in history, then Checkpoint Charlie is a must-see. It is a powerful reminder of the Cold War, and it is a fascinating place to learn about the history of Berlin.

Learned so much about check point Charlie from reading the outdoor museum wall they had. The pictures are mind blowing and seeing the dates is crazy… it’s not as far removed from our lifetimes as we might image. I went in the afternoon in winter in the middle of the week and it was QUIET! I even managed to get photos without a hundred tourists in. The tourist shop to the left of check point Charlie had some beautiful postcards with silver foil writing on!

Historial point of interest near the wall of Berlin. You can snap your photo for free. Quick tip. Souvenir stores around it are quite expensive, and do not buy the pieces of the wall that are being sold as souvenirs.

By the early 1950s, the Soviet method of restricting emigration was emulated by most of the rest of the Eastern Bloc, including East Germany. However, in occupied Germany, until 1952, the lines between East Germany and the western occupied zones remained easily crossed in most places. Subsequently, the inner German border between the two German states was closed and a barbed-wire fence erected. Even after closing of the inner German border officially in 1952, the city sector border in between East Berlin and West Berlin remained considerably more accessible than the rest of the border because it was administered by all four occupying powers. Accordingly, Berlin became the main route by which East Germans left for the West. Hence the Berlin sector border was essentially a "loophole" through which Eastern Bloc citizens could still escape. The 3.5 million East Germans who had left by 1961 totaled approximately 20% of the entire East German population. The emigrants tended to be young and well educated. The loss was disproportionately great among professionals — engineers, technicians, physicians, teachers, lawyers and skilled workers.

Very interesting landmark in 20th century history. Nothing in the streets reminds us of the communist reign this city suffered under, but this checkpoint and the sandbags. Nice photo oportunity since it is a public place and free for everyone to go either east or west whichever one feels like. As it should be.

Mind that its just a board and check box on the road, so don't plan a whole day or even few hours for this unless you wanna eat in the restaurants around or visit the museum. Definitely a Berlin icon. The overall feel is great and historic. Good photo point and not crowded on weekdays

I would say it’s a nice bit of history, with the wall long gone you have to rely on multiple displays covering the issues. None the less it’s nice if part of a walk around Berlins sights.

  • 4/5 Shelley 3 years ago on Google
Historic, for sure, so it’s worth a trip (and it’s conveniently located right at the subway). There are a few souvenir shops and walls with photos worth perusing but it won’t take too much time, this is not an all-day thing. One thing I wish Berlin hadn’t allowed is all the fast food places nearby. Takes you out of the historic Berlin experience. And it’s almost impossible to get a good photo without KFC in the background :(

Must-see in Berlin! Its an interesting and important piece of history. There are two museums nearby, we went to the Black Box museum which was free at the time (not always free but it always has low prices) and it was really well put together. There are also lots of souvenir shops in the area.

Eerie to wander Berlin. Still a feel of the wall and East Berlin. I didnt know all the hotels, museum, Brandenburg gate were all behind the wall. Today all is clean, kept up and bustling with tourists. Now mostly Europeans visiting their monuments, like we are in the states. So much to see and do. Watch out if booking tours where you dont know the meeting place. Viatours had us taking a train and bus to get to our dinner cruise, when, once there, just next to the Reichstag there are all kinds of canal boats to use.

  • 5/5 Sara W. 2 years ago on Google

Had a nice time visiting this place. Being a history fan, I have seen this place in movies like The man from U.N.C.L.E , so visiting it by real gave me some goosebumps. It was great lurking around and reading history stuff written on the walls in the surrounding areas. Visit this place peacefully so you have time to relaxedly read all the details and boardings nearby!

  • 4/5 George K. 2 years ago on Google
All the American history of the Berlin Wall is there, the checkpoint that you can pass from west to the east of Berlin. You can a lot of good photos there and also visit the museum that is next to it and it is free.

  • 5/5 Derrick L. 1 year ago on Google
Obvious place to visit in Berlin it's very touristy but all the same a must visit. There is a Museum beside it and gift shops with lots places to eat and drink with other interesting places very close relating to Checkpoint Charlie, the war and the wall.

  • 3/5 Aleksandra M. 1 year ago on Google
It's for these people who know the story... But most of the people go there to have fancy photo, and don't understand even where they take it. Just a small piece of tourist attraction but in the end... Could be done better.

  • 4/5 Michael U. 1 year ago on Google
Something of a must for visitors, Checkpoint Charlie was the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Featured in films the area offers lots of photo ops and signage that can be accomplished in approximately 1 hour.

  • 4/5 Mark G. 1 year ago on Google
Impressive to see how small it actually is. The left behind soviet markings about 100m further on a building made the setting more complete. So take into consideration that the area is heavily commercialised, with even the adjacent "wall" museum not being free of charge.

  • 4/5 Gicu H. 1 year ago on Google
Also known as "Checkpoint C", this was the best-known crossing point of the Berlin Wall and a symbol of the Cold War. There are extremely popular places, not thanks of how they look, but how they make you feel. Many places in Berlin may not be spectacular in terms of offering, but make you feel in a special way because of their historical touch. Checkpint C is that kind of place... and it also makes you recall the famous movie.

  • 4/5 Chris O. 1 year ago on Google
Definitely worth checking out, but has changed since i was last here in 2007 when you could get your passport stamped or invalidated (by actor’s playing security guards) as the guide said at the time. Worth a look and read of the few bits of info around, definitely a must if you are into cold war history.

  • 5/5 Amrapalli M. 1 year ago on Google
The details, the war, the significance, the east side and the west side all comes becomes a movie scene when you stand in front of this road.. absolutely must visit place and we were lucky to witness a show performed by some veterans..

  • 5/5 Luis Javier O. 11 months ago on Google
Having the opportunity to witness the theater of operations of the cold war is undoubtedly one of the main attributes that Berlin offers for those interested in history. The city has preserved these places that are very important for the history of the city, the country and the world. The entire site is very detailed with a lot of information for those interested in knowing the German perspective of this piece of world history.

  • 5/5 Danijela R. 10 months ago on Google
Great historical place, must see while visiting Berlin. Easy to reach by simply walking from the center of the town. You can by souvenirs, something to eat or drink in shops nearby.

  • 4/5 Jiri H. 10 months ago on Google
Probably worth a visit, but I had a little higher expectations. The streets around are in normal traffic, so the overall impression of the place is a bit diminished. Playing the shell, in turn, gives it a socialist dimension.

  • 5/5 Smiley V. 11 months ago on Google
It is a tourist trap, but its nice anyway. Basically it is a reconstruction of the old post that remained between the US and Soviet sides in Berlin. It is not the original one (removed a long time ago) but is nice to take pictures at. There are many, many overpriced shops all around this checkpoint, but I recommend not purchasing from here as prices are often much higher than in other tourist points.

  • 2/5 Neil O. 10 months ago on Google
It's a must do when in Berlin but it's a total tourist trap. The beach is fun, and the history of the wall, especially those who died trying to breach it, it is moving. But make sure you visit the wall memorial to get a true, authentic feeling of life before the wall fell.

  • 4/5 John M. 10 months ago on Google
Nice view. Time it for sunset. Good was not great. It was on the level of a so-so lunch. Not a good dinner that costs that much. But it was an experience and an awesome one at that.

  • 5/5 Neal A. 9 months ago on Google
Surreal place to visit being so infamous and significant to Berlin. Visit the outside of the black box museum on the junction as loads of photos through the times of checkpoint Charlie. We also visited the Einstein cafe which was hugely significant in cold war days. Right on the opposite junction to the black box museum.

  • 5/5 Aki “Aki” S. 8 months ago on Google
An important part of history. We walked here from our hotel and their are lot of shops and restaurant around . It’s a public space and open all the time. They have build a 360 panorama which takes you back to the old times.

  • 3/5 Kenneth K. 7 months ago on Google
Although you must visit and see and get your picture taken here if you are spending any amount of time in Berlin. The rush of the traffic and lack of "actors" continually tending to the hut has taken some of the shine off of it. Perhaps time has diminished the historical significance of it. Don't get me wrong we do visit it each time but it seems less important to do so as the decades have passed.

  • 5/5 Namrata B. 9 months ago on Google
Popular tourist attraction. As such, just a lively intersection to click pics. They have recreated a checkpoint with sandbags etc., to get a feel of old times. Then along the lane there are many souvenir shops. It was a fun visit.

  • 4/5 Darryl C. 5 months ago on Google
The famous Checkpoint Charlie of our younger years is. Ot quite is gargantuan as it once was thankfully. A nice symbol with associated museum and back box garden nearby. A fitting remembrance of what we need not to do.

  • 2/5 Brian L. 6 months ago on Google
Not much to see here really. But we didn't go into the museum. Outside there's a hut, cement bag wall and a lot of tourists. There's better locations to visit in Berlin

  • 5/5 Maksymilian R. 4 months ago on Google
Very nice experience seeing it from close. There is one couple i guess which they have an amazing project with an old fashion photographic machine and they take you a picture at the same time printing it as a piece of newspaper from the old days.

  • 4/5 Karethra B. 3 months ago on Google New
No tickets needed. Check point Charlie is a sign at the previous entry point between the West and East. It's one of the most famous of the 12 previous check points. There's a lot of foot traffic as there are many tourist shops along this street as well now.

We went in the evening when it was drizzling with rain… so not crowded.. interesting because the of the history behind it, like many sites in Berlin.
