We loved this section of the pearl harbor museum there are several different and absolutely beautiful views of the ocean and there are statues, monuments, the submarine, and torpedoes on display here. Maybe it's because you have to pay to enter this area, but it is beautiful and the staff are very friendly. We enjoyed being able to see the different torpedoes and submarines. You are actually able to walk on the submarine and go inside of it and see the different parts/functions. The gift shop had really cool souvenirs and purchases fund the parks upkeep. The food offered at Jake's was really good with decent prices. If you enjoy submarines or simply want to pay your respects and visit pearl harbor I suggest this area.

I’ve been here twice. The first time we toured the submarine and outdoor areas, the second time we explored the indoor museum. Both are included with your admission price and both are fantastic! This is a well thought out museum. As a surface Navy family we know all about ships but very little about the silent service. My 8 year old son loved learning different aspects of undersea warfare and history! The interactive quizzes and hands on displays are VERY appealing to a curious elementary aged student. I’m sure most people come to Pearl Harbor to see the Arizona Memorial, but if you have spare time or the boat tours are full, I highly encourage your visit to the Bowfin and Submarine Museum, instead. It’s mainly indoors so a great option for a rainy day. You could easily spend a few hours here if you stopped to read and interact with everything. They do offer a military discount. So if you have a military ID please let them know when you’re paying. Enjoy!

Title: Dive into History: A Fascinating Journey on the USS Bowfin Submarine Review: I recently had the incredible opportunity to explore the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum at Pearl Harbor, and I must say, it was an experience that exceeded all expectations. This museum offers visitors a unique chance to dive into history and explore the depths of a real submarine, providing an unforgettable journey into the life of submariners. From the moment I stepped on board the USS Bowfin, I was immediately struck by the authenticity and attention to detail. The restoration work done on the submarine is truly remarkable, showcasing the dedication and effort to preserve this important piece of history. The knowledgeable and passionate staff were readily available to answer any questions and provide fascinating insights into the challenges faced by submariners during World War II. One of the highlights of the museum is the opportunity to explore the different compartments of the submarine. From the cramped living quarters to the control room and torpedo tubes, each area offers a glimpse into the daily life of those who served on board. It's a humbling experience to imagine what life was like for these brave men who operated in such close quarters, carrying out their vital missions in often perilous conditions. Additionally, the museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts that further enhance the historical significance of the USS Bowfin. From personal items belonging to submariners to informative displays, each exhibit contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the submarine's role in World War II and beyond. The interactive exhibits, including a periscope simulator, provide a hands-on and engaging way to learn about the mechanics and operations of a submarine. The dedication and commitment to educate visitors about the sacrifices made by submariners and the vital role they played in the war is evident throughout the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum. The exhibits and displays are thoughtfully curated, offering a wealth of information presented in a captivating manner. It's truly an educational experience that will leave you with a greater appreciation for the incredible bravery and resilience of those who served on board submarines. The location of the museum within the historic Pearl Harbor adds another layer of significance to the visit. Being able to witness firsthand the site of the infamous attack and understand the submarines' role in the defense of the harbor adds depth and context to the overall experience. In conclusion, the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum at Pearl Harbor is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone curious about the story of submariners in World War II. The authenticity of the submarine, the informative exhibits, and the passionate staff all contribute to an exceptional museum experience. Dive into history and explore the USS Bowfin – you won't be disappointed.

This museum is in the same national park as the USS Arizona Memorial. This is a real hands-on experience, walking on the sub and seeing exactly how the crew actually lived. It's a real special opportunity. How they lived practically on top of each other is beyond me. Not only on top of each other but in some cases the beds were literally next to the torpedoes! If you have the funds and the time I highly recommend this tour, both the museum part and especially the self tour on the actual sub. You get to walk on the top outside deck, around the conning tower, and one deck below. You can see not only beds and torpedoes but tiny kitchen facilities and workman areas and even the shower and toilet. Plus you are surrounded by all the massive metal equipment that made the submarine run. You get to walk through the hatches most of the length of the sub. Fascinating to observe, when you consider these people lived on the sub for 2-month tours at a time. If you have a Go city pass, this tour is on it.

Great submarine museum! I do wish there was a little more detail in the submarine itself. I have toured a couple public submarines such as the USS Cod in Cleveland, Ohio. The distinction I would make is that the Cod had little trinkets and knickknacks that made the submarine feel real and also had a little informational placards all over the place which were helpful. But I would definitely still recommend this museum/submarine. The museum itself is pretty informative. I love the exhibit on nuclear reactors, launch controls, and different types of submarines. They also have cool outdoor exhibits

This is an exceptionally well done tour and museum. The museum was just opened in '21 and provides a wealth of information about the submarine history and operations. Recommend touring the boat first, with the free audio, then visiting the museum. Very good time spent!

What a fun Museum. If your a larger person like me, you will have to turn sideways to get through the ship in some spots. If your closterphobic this adventure may not be for you, because it does get tight in places. Over all an excellent experience, and there is a food truck / setting area to enjoy right outside the subs entrance also if needed.

Great tour - this is a no-frills and highly educational tour of a real decommissioned military sub. All the levers and knobs still work and everything is in great condition. There are very few restrictions on this tour - most things are hands on. If you want to touch something, you can. Nothing has been removed. Takes about 30m to see it all. A bit pricey but thoroughly enjoyable. Can combine with your visit to the USS Arizona. Doors inside are very small - at 6ft I felt like I was at risk of a head bump all the time.

The USS Bowfin Submarine Museum offers a captivating journey into the depths of naval history and the remarkable world of submarine warfare. Anytime I step on board a submarine I am always amazed how tight things are inside the sub. It immediately makes me wonder how challenging it must be inside an operating sub. The USS Bowfin helped understand the pivotal role submarines played in World War II. This Museum is an absolute gem for history enthusiasts, naval aficionados, and anyone seeking a unique and immersive experience. It offers a rare glimpse into the life of submariners and their contributions to our nation's defense. The museum's dedication to preserving and sharing this important part of history is evident in every aspect of the visit.

Great place for school, field trips or history, buffs or just anyone who is interested in history of the nation in general or even the world. Check out the pictures I posted for pricing for tickets to enter the museum and tour the submarine. There is a short movie on the other side, and lots of artifacts and plenty of memorials with explanations and names of those who served and died with honor and the names of survivors. We traveled halfway across the world to see the site and other things we are glad we were able to make it.

It is a eye opening experience to view the how the seaman live and work in a submarine of WWII. The museum it self is not so big but very well designed and displaying so many items that makes you salute the servicemen and women at that time. No bags or backpack of any kind are allowed in the park, you need to checked-in in a locker. No outside bottle water allows also. There are food and drink stand inside the park and water fountain by the restroom.

If you like history and WWII definitely a must-see! Somewhat biased because my family is in the military. The only thing I really have against is the fact that once you get inside the bowfin, you are packed with a slow moving line. We also went on a weekend post pandemic. Perhaps going during the weekday it will be less crowded. My 4 year old enjoyed the submarine and the museum both.

We enjoyed touring the USS bowfin submarine and the museum. We did the self guided tour with the audio. It was nice listening to the history of the submarine and the information on the attack on pearl harbor. The museum itself was filled with artifacts. The photo they take of you is added to a newspaper replica from back in the day. Very creative and the only photo souvenir we bought the entire trip.

After the boat dropped us off at the visitors center we went straight for the Submarine USS Bowfin. This was included in our package so it was already pre-paid and we were given our tickets ahead of time. I believe the entrance for this is $15 for adults and $7 for kids. The museum part was closed when we came, they are doing construction so we were unable to check that out. I would say if you're claustrophobic probably stay away from doing this tour of the Sub. It can feel a little cramped in there and hot, they do have little fans going though. Walking through the Bowfin was pretty cool and yet I can't believe how these men could live here in this cramped space for so long. I mean even I had problems going through some of the hatch doors, I'm short people I have short legs lol. This is definitely worth a stop, very interesting it would have been even better if we had a chance to go to the museum but this was a good experience.

A fantastic place to visit if one hasn't been to a submarine before. For everyone else, go there for the stories and not the physical submarine. The museum was impressive and tells a story which needs to be told. But not sure I would recommend this over other things if you are visiting the island just for a few days.

Fantastic location and the view is incredible. However, a few things to note. First, this at the end of a street in a populated neighborhood for the families of our service members. Be respectful, quiet, and avoid making loud noises - as you don't know if the service member works an alternative shift. Probably best to avoid going entirely. Second, avoid putting coins on the memorial. The penny's stain the white paint and does not add to the aesthetics - I understand the meaning behind the coins, but frankly, take your money and donate to a charity that helps our service members instead.

Worth the cost to check it out. It’s a self guided tour but they give you headsets to narrate and guide you. When you are the sub the clips automatic play when you reach certain spots which my husband and I appreciated. There is a good amount of climbing though if you have any health conditions please be advised. Also if you have any kind of height to you be prepared to walk hunched over and constantly be ducking down. Other then that it was so cool to see how it would have been for our Navy men back then and the sacrifices and conditions that they had to live in.

Museum was closed, No kids under 4 allowed. 1 star, because NO INFO about restrictions until you are buying the tickets, but they have a security check before, where you can bring in only what in your pockets. Even baby food or diapers not allowed. I'll understand it, if they provided any baby food or drink for babies or diaper stations, but... Nothing. 5 hrs for kids without food if you want to visit USS Missouri.

Having been on other submarines in museums, we were underwhelmed with this visit. The cost was quite steep and there was virtually no information on board the ship. We found out after that we could have paid additional money for an audio tour. That would have provided some of the information that was lacking, but it seems like 1) we should have been offered the option when purchasing the tickets and 2) for the price of admission, the audio tour should really just be included. Space is obviously tight once you descend into the ship, so there is only a one way passage. With people both behind and in front of us, all we could do was shuffle along and guess at what we were seeing. I could rate this higher if it had been less expensive or more informative.

I love this one. The maintenance on it is impeccable. And the tour through it is worth the price. The kids were blown away by the experience. The first hand stories are well curated. Plus the kide love to see the guns up close and personal.

You know when a museum is worth the visit when you leave learning something new. Self guided audio tours are included in the entrance and are an amazing source of knowledge regarding the submarine Bowfin. The tour of the actual sub is not that long. You only go through one floor of the sub. However, if you come during the day the views of Pearl Harbor on the bow of the sub are amazing and worth a picture. Due note that prior to entering the sub they take a picture of you and embedd it in a faux newspaper of Dec. 7th (well worth it). Kudos to the staff that maintains the ship. It is impeccable! You can continue your visit with a few outside exhibits featuring various torpedos and submarine equipment. Inside the museum you will find a plethora of information regarding the rile submarines in WW2 and during the cold war. There is a nice gift shop with the typical merchandise. A yummy food truck are on site. There is even a cool playground for the kids to run out their energy.

The museum has so many different things to look at, the submarine outside, various pieces such as torpedoes, Bofors guns, info on ICBMs, etc. Climbing through the sub outside (USS Bowfin) is really neat. Definitely be on the more nimble side as the doorway is going to require some bending and can be a bit difficult for older folks.

A must do when visiting pearl harbor. Wouldn't prioritize ahead of Arizona or uss Missouri but definitely don't skip out. Expect 60-90 min if you go at your leisure in the sub and museum.

Great museum and submarine walkthrough. The sub is in great condition for its age. I loved the photos from the 40s that were of the exact locations in the ship. Amazing to see history come alive like that.

This was one of the most interesting and cool things we have done on our trip. We really enjoyed this museum! It is attached to the pearl harbor memorial and that is where you park (It is now $7 to park). Once inside the gates, then you go over to the right and that is where the submarine museum is located. Ask for the free audio tour! Especially for going into the submarine. They give you the device and you get complimentary cheap earbuds with it too. Pro tip, do this museum first, then go to the Aviation museum (who also has an audio tour) and you can plug in your earbuds to that device since they do not give you anything over there, and you have to hold the device up to your ear. I would recommend walking the submarine first to get a feel for everything and get some background knowledge before going into the actual museum building. Walking through the submarine was definitely the coolest part. The audio tour is definitely needed here as it is literally just a walk through with very limited signage so the only way we learned anything about the sub or knew what we were looking at is through the audio tour. You press the number 1 when you get onto the sub and then from there I am pretty sure it is RFID to know when you cross the threshold into different rooms and that is how it knows when to start playing the next recording. It will automatically go on its own as you walk through. It was very fascinating the way that they lived there on the sub. If you have mobility problems of any kind or are a very tall person, walking through the submarine is going to be very hard for you. I am 5ft 10in tall and I had to duck and maneuver pretty good to get in and out of the doorway openings to the next rooms. I hit my shoulder on one door so please watch your step and be careful as you walk through. Then you can go into the building with the museum. It starts forward and to the left and you loop around for general submarine stuff, and a little bit of WWII stuff. Then you cross over to begin the cold war era and modern submarines. So it goes from WWII to present day on everything submarine in this museum. You walk up to the sign and there is a number at the bottom that you type into your audio tour for this section. There is a lot of information in here that you could spend multiple hours. It was all so very interesting and I learned so much more than I did before. Any history buff, WWII buff, or navy buff would really enjoy this museum. However I will note there is a lot of walking around and virtually no areas to sit down so be aware of that. In between the museum and the sub there is a gift shop and a café. Overall I would highly recommend this museum as it was so interesting and different!

Great museum and an excellent submarine walk-through. Being able to actually walk the top deck of the sub was a cool experience. The museum itself was fun with interactive experiences and short films that provided a lot of good information. There is also a covered "patio" with tables and a food truck, which we ended up eating at. Good food and nice shaded tables. A great visit!

This was very cool! You get to go down into an old submarine and crawl around and look at stuff. You do have to crawl through hatches that are very small and require to step over them. There's also steep stairs. Other than that this was very cool!

  • 5/5 Jacob Z. 2 years ago on Google
What an amazingly fantastic museum! This place is far from your run of the mill drab museums as it has a complementary electronic tour offered (disposable headphones provided by park), interactive exhibits, and places with hands on experiences for the young ones (physically and at heart). There is a lot here, in the museum and the submarine so please give yourself some time to take it slow and take it all in. Currently must provide proof of COVID-19 vaccine and valid ID to enter. Please do not harass the folks there, if you are adverse to this policy. They are simply following the rules.

Very cool walking through this submarine!! We enjoyed learning the history. Not very crowded which was nice, we were able to take our time. **BONUS** If you purchase TWO copies of the picture they take ($30) you get a coupon for a free oyster that has a pearl in it!! Super cool, I got a black pearl which is rare😃

Great tour of this WW2 submarine. Very tight spaces so be aware. See photos (hat added on hatch for size comparison). Excellent views from the top deck. Very interesting sites within.

  • 5/5 Steven J. 2 years ago on Google
This museum is the place to go for all things submarine. Most of the exhibits cover the WWII era in the Pacific, but they do cover the cold war and modern submarines, a bit. The ticket also allows visitors to board the USS Bowfin. You can go down into the inner parts of the vessel and get a feel for how cramped the conditions were for the sailors of that era. All around a good and educational experience.

Ever wanted to see what a battle submarine looks like from the inside? It was like diving into history and yet satisfying a fantasy of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Take it all in but remember Pearl Harbor is a memorial to those who served to protect our freedom.

A very informative and fascinating experience! Requires a separate ticket from the USS Arizona/Pearl Harbor Memorial, but located on the same premise. The museum is very information and takes you through the history of the submarine as well as the part submarines played in WW2. You can also tour one level of the USS Bowfin as well. There are some additional artifacts outside of the museum next to the bathrooms. Small gift shop and food truck located in this section too.

Such a cool experience! They give you an audio tour device that walks you through the submarine and tell you stories from the crew of the sub. Some of our group's devices worked and some didn't. We were able to walk through the sub and see all the areas: mess hall, sleeping quarters, torpedo rooms at the front and back, control room, etc.

The USS Bowfin audio tour is a great way to see the submarine while also learning a lot about it along the way. It’s pretty incredible how much fits in there — some things that stood out were how compact the kitchen was, and a machine shop tucked into a corner. The museum was also good, but my layover was only 5-6 hours so I didn’t have much time for it other than a quick walk around the exhibits. The bus to/from the airport was good, I’d imagine if the train is running that will be an even better way of checking this area out during a layover without worrying about missing a connecting flight.

The USS Bowfin is part of the USS Arizona & Pearl Harbor experience. If you appreciate US History and want to see the inside of a US submarine this tour is for you. If you're claustrophobic- you may have trouble inside, because everything is close quarters. Personally, for $20, it was a worthwhile exhibit that you can see in about 90 minutes.

  • 5/5 Nicholas W. 8 months ago on Google
Although the actual USS Arizona Memorial wasn’t really my thing, this was. Touring this submarine was so interesting. You see how cramped the quarters really are. It’s unbelievable that 80 people lived on this sub for months at a time. Some of the bunks are literally in the torpedo storage. You could be sleeping inches above a torpedo. If you are large or mobility challenged be aware that this may be difficult. You have to climb up and down stairs and there are very small airlock doors you have to pass through. My 75 year old father who has mobility issues made it but it was challenging for him (but completely worth it). There is no air conditioning so it can be very stuffy below deck but there are lots of fans to keep the air moving. In addition to going through the sub, the price of admission gets you into a very interesting museum full of WW2 and Cold War naval history. This isn’t cheap but I found it worth it. I found this to fit my tastes and interests more than the actual USS Arizona Memorial.

This was all part of our Pearl Harbor Tour. My wife and I visited the museum and the submarine. We were quite impressed with the attention to detail as well as how well kept everything was. The brass was super polished as was the chrome. The self-guided tour was worth it. Glad they offered that option. Would love to see again.

Great way to experience history. Ticket gains access to the sub and nearby exhibition. Both are reverent reminders of war, freedom and sacrifice. Do it (once in a lifetime.) Unless you really like expensive keepsakes, skip the option to buy the digital photo. Poor quality digital photo download. Your phone will likely take a better group photo.

We had some great stops on the island of Oahu on our our last vacation and we can add this one to the list. While waiting for our timed tour to see the Battleship Missouri BB-63 we took a side tour to go through the Bowfin Submarine museum. It was quiet a tour and gives added respect for our Navy men who defended our nation over the years

One of the great Museum ships in Pearl Harbor. Definitely a must see if you are going to be in the area. With the day pass you can see the USS Bowfin, USS Missouri, and the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum. Part of the exhibit is the USS bowfin itself and the Fleet Museum. You can do a self guided tour through the inside of the USS Bowfin and then finish inside the Fleet Museum itself. If you are planning on being in the area for the day i would highly recommend getting the day pass to the 3 venues so you can seem them all at once and even save some money :)

The USS bowfin is a must while in Pearl Harbor. The visit to the submarine itself is not very long, but it will give you a great overlook of how life is/was inside a submarine. It's an incredible experience and everyone in my family enjoyed it. Once you finish at the submarine the museum includes other exhibitions and places to walk around and read more about the topic.

This was a fascinating tour at Pearl Harbor. Didn't realize the length of the Bowfin until you walk the entire length inside. Compartments are well displayed, very clean and kept shiny. The museum has much to offer for the history of submarines up to modern day.

USS Bowfin was part of our Pearl Harbor tour and we loved it!! I did the audio tour which would recommend everyone do as it gives plenty of insight of the ship itself. Plenty of photo opportunities but if you're a history junkie like myself I recommend you take the time to read all the plaques and visit the museum next to it.

This is a short tour of a historic submarine. Prices were fair for military members. During your tour you have a headset that describes different parts of the submarine to you. It even has recordings of Veterans sharing their personal experiences. It was definitley worth the trip. I will say it's not handicap friendly as you climb up/down things and through small holes. You can't bring bags or purses, anything bigger than a small clutch / large wallet is a no go.

It was incredible to see this part of history. My husband and children enjoyed touring the inside of the submarine, but if you are even mildly claustrophobic, please hang out and check out the views from the deck (which I'm sure is a no-brainer for most people... I just thought I'd be able to breathe slowly and brave though it). I made the mistake of getting a few steps down with a line behind me, and I panicked trying to push past others to get out faster. What I did see was impressive though!

Very interesting. Taking a step back into history. Left speechless at times. Taking it all in.

Great to go into a real sub, you get to touch the controls and have a feel for the ship, and how it worked. The audio tour is great - it's automated, and plays the tour as you walk into the various chambers of the sub. It was very nice to get there at the end of the day, almost no one else was there. Was able to go at a nice pace and get some great photos.

Not very often you get to have a look inside a submarine. Let's you see the conditions that these brave men had to live in for long periods of time under war conditions. Truly remarkable. Staff were friendly at the shop and full of information.

  • 3/5 Veronica K. 4 years ago on Google
Tight quarters going through it. Don't go if you have a bad back or injury to legs. The holes connecting each room require a lot of movement. It really brings to life what people in a submarine have to do and live. Completed the tour of the inside in about 17 minutes.

Lots of history, and a friendly staff, including some US Navy personnel. I'd definitely recommend this museum for anyone interested in World War II history. Go early though, because the place gets packed, and we got there at 7:30 which made for a great time. When we left, about 10, it was so crowded and we definitely would have been rushed through the submarine.

This looks like a fitting memory to those who lost their lives. What an excellent reminder that those who mess with the might of the American navy get what they deserve. As a veteran of the British Royal Air Force who worked closely with the navy submarine fleet and our American brothers I would love to visit one day.

Very nice piece of history. Educational and eye opening. If you like the Pearl Harbor history, read about a relatively unknown vessel called the USS Vestal. Very heroic.

Peaceful and serene location (opposite of USS Arizona memorial; shore side - Ford Island) for such a historical national tradgedy. A must see if you can. This site is on private property and very difficult to access. Very beautiful, with historical housing; activly being lived in. As much as it's worth to see in person, it's worth the same to leave it as it is, let it retain it's own dignity and leave it in peace. I'm not leaving a picture. A memory is good enough.

Very cool location under the tree with a great view of the Arizona.

This is a very old Banyan tree on Ford Island. Like most other reviews mention, be respectful of the location, this is an active military community. Second, the USS Arizona is right off the shoreline here which is hollowed military waters. The view of the memorial is awesome. The tree is pretty impressive as well, unfortunately, its pretty scarred from people carving their names and other words into the tree. Very historical and impressive.

What an excellent tour of the USS bowfin submarine tour, we had an excellent time while the tour guide explain the US submarine force operations during World War II, it was a phenomenal tour and we salute all the The members of the US submarine force Pacific for their sacrifices in World War II. Again an absolutely great tour

Loved it! Make sure to get the audio guide. It’s a really cool experience and I learned a lot. Its a shame the most interesting parts of Pearl harbor at an additional coast. Also charging more than the entry price for a “newspaper photo” seems disproportionate. There might be a better way to sell them than printing everyone’s photos only to throw them in the garbage afterward. Paper are trees and that’s definitely a waste of trees.

(Translated by Google) The places worth visiting are not only of historical significance, but also can be used to understand the origin of scientific and technological development. There are not many people who know such a close distance, and not every country has a submarine to see, and it may not be so. Come in for a close visit, be sure to come, it's worth buying a ticket!
