This is an excellent place for sunrise and sunset photography.

Once a pristine coastal area the park is littered with trash, large tents, boom box and generator noises, and sports equipment of temporary (?) encampments. The ancient lithified dune has been trampled over by beach goers and body surfers. Wide pathways to the rocky shoreline cut through the once continuous beach naupaka and coastal ʻiliahi ecosystem. Separately, the parking lot (very limited spaces) offers a photo opportunity of Oahu’s eastern shore with its deep blue nearshore waters. Best to limit your visit to photo taking from the parking area for safety and help conserve Hawaii’s unique environments.

I photographed an elopement session at Makapu'u Beach and it was incredible! We met at sunrise to capture these soft sun rays peeking through the mountain range. If you look closely, there is a blowhole in the background by the rocks!

Highly recommend this spot for sunrises. It wasn’t busy at all here at the end of July and it was absolutely beautiful.

Beautiful scenery. Peaceful, and relaxing. 10 minutes walk to the bus station cross highway 72 at Sea Life Park, or parking is alongside the highway right by the beach.

My favorite beach of the trip. I will be sure to return to this beach if/when I return. The waves are high in the summer with lots of boarders and body surfers. Be careful! Lots of rocks in the water and on the beach. You will need water shoes for this beach and it's gorgeous views.

One of two beaches (Sandy Beach the other) with a super thick wave for body and body board wave riders. Need to be weary when the waves are over 4 feet. Take your time and observed the direction of the swells. And be calm and controlled even when you get pitched. Equal to doing the north shore surf thing on boards is the body surf thing at Makapuu. Be well. Vacationsensei.

Great beach to watch the kids on their bodyboards, but these aren't waves for beginners and maybe not even intermediates... they can be pretty intense! The beach has restrooms / change rooms but there's nowhere to get food if needed. Also, if you're going there by bus, there's a stop right at SeaWorld across the street.

Rough waves, more for surfing and similar water sports. Beautuful place for pics, camping, and relaxing by the beach.

I would say this is one of the under rated beaches. Best for surfing and spending time with your company. Currents are better than sandy beach ( they are not as rough as sandy beach). Also, a beautiful view of the sunrise with cool breezes. Do not forget to go to a view spot to get areal view of the beach

Good spot to see the sunrise and very quiet spot in the morning. Lots of black reef spots for you to stand. This spot was mentioned as top five spots in Oahu for sunrise. Worth waking up in the morning for it.

Mostly locals here who love their boogie boards. Nice picnic tables and swimming conditions, not too much shade so we bring beach umbrellas. Plenty of parking. Oahu Trailblazer has directions.

We came here after we hiked the Makapu’u Lighthouse Trail. Beautiful fine sandy beach! We visited during the winter months so the waves were wild…good for body surfing! Ample parking spots, the grounds were well maintained, clean bathrooms/change rooms and there are also outdoor showers. Bring your supplies as there are no stores, restaurants or food carts here. It’s a beautiful beach to dip your toes in after your hike. Makapu’u Beach Park is divided into two by a rugged stretch of coastline. We went to the one right next to the Makapu’u Lookout. There’s also Sea Life Park across the highway.

I loved this beach. The water was crystal clear and picturesque. The shoreline was rocky and the waves were too rough. Easy parking on the side of the road. Stop by and enjoy a sunrise with your morning coffee. Stunning views.

This is one of our favorite beaches on Oahu. The waves and currents can be stronger here, so there have been times we haven't gone too far into the water, especially with younger swimmers.

A fantastic, secluded beach with astonishing views and a couple facilities. The waves are very strong, and the warning signs are posted for a reason. While seasoned surfers and swimmers will find this beach delightful and challenging, children should be closely supervised to prevent injury, or being pulled away from shore.

I absolutely loved Makapuu Beach Park! The scenery is just breathtaking - crystal clear blue waters, white sand beaches, and stunning views of the surrounding cliffs. But what really sets this beach apart is the big waves! As someone who loves to swim, I had an absolute blast playing in the waves. All in all, this is an incredible beach that I would recommend to anyone looking for a fun and beautiful day out.

Stunning, we went there as our plans to hike diamond head and then Hanauma bay were changed due to both of them being closed. Not kid friendly as the waves are super tall and strong, danger signs everywhere. We saw multiple whales breaching and the beach was just beautiful. Aa along as you’re careful, totally worth the time.

It’s a nice little beach, across from sea life park, so it’s accessible via bus, just need to be careful when crossing. It could get crowded since it is a small beach. You can see the lighthouse from the beach, will need to drive to get to the lighthouse trail though.

Best bodysurf beach Eastside for sure, but beware of beach safety! DO NOT GO IN IF YOU ARE INEXPERIENCED WITH WAVES. Bring fins and practice ocean awareness. Don’t go if you’re looking for a chill day at the beach. This is not that place.

Beautiful beach to enjoy watching people surf or to have a picnic. Just make sure to bring extra toiletries since the public restroom tends to run out of toilet paper during the later part of the day, otherwise the restroom seems decently clean.

Makapu'u Beach is a secluded gem on the eastern point of Oahu. Between the towering cliffs of Makapu'u Point and Makapu'u Tide Pools is a strip of sandy beach used by few people. You have lovely views from the beach and islands a ways out intrigue you.

Too rough for a swim. Had 'man of war' infestation during our visit and hundreds of people got stung between makapuu, lanikai, and Kailua bay. Just an anomaly, probably because of some storm or winds. Nice backdrop of cliffs behind the crystal clear waters so certainly has the picturesque setting.

👍 Kinda traumatic. Went camping there and the tent caught on fire, flooded from rain storm, collapsed from the wind - then flew away, not to mention 1/3 of the beach sand coming inside, and the temperature going from freezing to hot when ever it pleased. 👍 A nice beach along the base on Diamond Head. There aren’t many trees for shade so the best times to visit are mornings and afternoons. Look for parking along the streets in this residential area.
