This is a great hike that will make you work for it but will yield wonderful views of both sides of the island at the top. The trail had many places where mud was virtually unavoidable. You will want hiking shoes! Take plenty of water and plan on the hike being a minimum of 3 hours. There is limited parking so the community entrance guard only issues available parking passes.

This trail was great! Weather was perfect with a nice breeze at the top. It definitely got more challenging about a mile in. Views were beautiful so it was worth it. I did this with my teenage son and it was even challenging for him. We wore spikes on our shoes that helped tremendously. Even though it wasn't muddy, the dirt was so smooth that we needed the traction to go up. Going down is less enjoyable, my toes are sore from my shoes pounding against them. I wouldn't trust the ropes too much as some of them are falling apart. All in all though I recommend this hike just go prepared 👌 Oh and there is limited parking so have someone drop you off if possible!

Great trail. Really enjoyed the landscape. The trail was very good. The first 3 miles were pretty easy. The last mile was kinda tough but very doable.

Definite five star hike for me. Moderate enough with the stairs/ropes/heights combination. Views are stunning. At the top you can see 3 sides of the island. Relatively quiet... Maybe 6 to 7 groups on the whole trail when I went. Parking is limited, so you may have to wait a bit or park further down the hill and walk to the entrance. Single track that narrows towards the top. Lots of stairs that can even be muddy on a dry and sunny day, so bring proper shoes. I'm not a fan of heights but still didn't mind most of the way considering there were ropes that you could hang onto and the trail was wide enough in most places. Weather can change in minutes. Arrived at the top to sunny skies and 5 minutes later was shrouded in clouds. A seasoned hiker could do this in under 2 hours round trip, but if you want to take it easy plan for more like 3+ r/t.

Very beautiful and semi difficult hiking trail. We hike often and really enjoyed this hike. We went at 5pm to catch the sunset and it was incredible but not recommended if you are scared of the dark or if you don't have flashlights. The trail is quite difficult especially if there's any rain. Fortunately, the weather is absolutely perfect for us and made it one of our top hikes in the World. It is absolutely incredible with a full 360 degree view of the island. We highly recommend this for people in great shape and prepared for getting muddy and up for a challenge. We went right into the clouds ⛅ which made it very fun and difficult to see at times.

The trailhead is located in a gated community. Thankfully when you stop off at the gate, security will provide you with a day pass. This hike can be a big muddy mess. The closer you get to the end it can get steep and the stairs that have been installed seem to be eroding so be careful. When I got up to the top the fog was quite thick. As it started to clear the view was quite spectacular. A good hike all in all but I definitely prefer kuli’ou’ou if given the choice between the two.

awesome ridge hike where you can get 360 views of the entire island at the top. mostly long, gradual climb to the topic the beginning along the heco access road, but the second half is steep with a lot of steps and some ropes to help. its also usually rainy and slippery, so prepare accordingly, but since it's in a gated community, it's never crowded, just go early since parking is also limited.

Fabulous hike! Great views! Took about 4 hours round trip at a moderate pace. It’s a little less that 6 miles round trip. It is a moderate hike that would benefit from hiking shoes (we did it without). Getting down is more difficult than the climb up. Beautiful 360 views at the top. Don’t miss this one.

I’m not a hiker. This hike is HARD. Easier than Koko head, harder than diamond head in terms of effort. Even the easy parts felt moderate for me. There were so many challenging points. We went on a foggy day - at the top we saw nothing! Haha Whoever recommended wearing long pants… thank you!! The mud is an understatement… expect your shoes to be engulfed ankle deep in mud by the end of the hike. Just accept it. Embrace it. Be one with the mud.

Great, moderately difficult trail with views of both sides of Oahu. This trail is not as easily accessible as others in the area. It is actually nestled in a gated neighborhood. You get a pass at the gate and there should be plenty of parking at the trailhead. The trail does have a bunch of steps and even some ropes to help you climb up towards the top. I would recommend you go when it is sunny out, the views are amazing. The weather can change quickly so be ready for that. I would absolutely recommend this hike, the views are amazing, great exercise, and the neighborhood is really cool to drive through.

Really cool hike with lots of scenery changes and killer view at the top. We were lucky and wasnt overcast so we got a great view of everything. Nothing sketchy, just bring water and could be slippery if wet.

Drive through the residential area and get a parking pass from the guard. Start early because clouds eventually cover the view from the top. We got to the top before 10:00 and couldn’t see anything. Some other hikers mentioned if you wait a bit, the clouds may burn off. We went when it didn’t rain the past several days, and it was still extremely muddy in some parts. Be sure to wear good waterproof hiking shoes (leave your white sneakers at home!). Beautiful views!

One of my fav hikes on the island. About 4 hours round trip. Heavy on cardio as it is uphill the whole way up. Definitely doable. But I wouldn’t recommend going mid day as youll just get too hot. At the very end you can see views of the other side of the island

Well started this hike intending to get good views of the island. Getting to the trailhead required getting a pass from the guard station which detailed where you are allowed to park. The trail starts off with a basic climb on a well maintained path. After about half of the distance is complete, the trail becomes technical with eroded steps paired with ropes to help you with the ascent. A pair of working gloves is recommended if you want to protect your hands when using the ropes. The effort is worth it because at the top you can see two sides of the island and beautiful scenery. A hint of the interior of diamond head crater is visible from the top on a clear day. It was foggy when we arrived but after waiting for ~20 mins, the heat of the mid day sun helped burn off the fog for spectacular views.

I LOVE this trail. The beginning of the trail smells like a dead animal, but it soon dissipates and you’re on a beautiful moderate hike that will take around 3 hours. I’ve always encountered people here but it is never crowded. No trash on the trail, thankfully, which probably means respectful hikers. Some parts are steep and kind of scary (you’ll have to use ropes or get your hands dirty). Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, snacks (but don’t leave behind any trash), and you should be good. Not a lot of cellphone reception either.

A must do hike if you are in Oahu. But be warned….I highly recommend trail runners with good grip if it has rained recently. Amazing views. Our favourite hike.

To the ridge and back it was 5 miles exactly with roughly 1800 ft ascent. First half is a casual hike, second half is much more challenging once you hit the stairs. Grab a pass from the gate guard head to the top of the neighborhood and you're good to go. If there are clouds on the mountain there will be no view up top but enjoy the amazing views on the way!

This was an incredible beautiful but tough climb. There was a moment I didn’t think we’d make it up, but it was worth pushing through! I definitely wouldn’t go if it has rained. Even on a dry day this can be a dangerous hike. Couple places you need to use a rope to climb up and more importantly down. Bring water and snacks, it takes about 3 hours top to bottom. Heard a story of a man who recently fell off the side and dropped down 1000ft and took 3 days before he was rescued. So watch your step and probably don’t go alone.

This haik is at the top of my list, I have never seen more beautiful, incredible beauty opens up from any place and from any angle! 😍 You walk along the ridge of the mountain and it's awesome! We arrived at 10 am on Thursday, there were few cars, 5 out of 7 free places were in the parking lot, I think you need to go much earlier on weekends. When you check in, there is a person standing, he needs to show the ID, he will write down your car number and issue a pass. Since this is a residential area with expensive houses, this is why such a check. Get ready for the fact that the hike will be dirty, so put on old clothes and be sure to have the right shoes, if it rains, it will become very slippery. It was hard for us to go down because of the slippery road, we fell a lot, It was easier to go up. But it's worth it! When we got to the end, a thick fog was waiting for us there, we were so upset, we stood for about 30 minutes waiting for the fog to go away, but no. Good thing the other side was sunny. This hike took us 4 hours round trip. Highly recommend this place!

Beautiful hike with beautiful views. We ended going on a perfect day where it wasn’t that muddy. The hike has some strawberry guava bushes along the way which were sour but fun to try! Try to get there earlier. They only have so many parking passes that allow parking at the actual trailhead. We showed up around 9:30am and had to park at the security gate, but still worth the extra two miles!

The hike itself is well maintained and stunning views. About half-way up the drive to the hike the road becomes 'private' and motorcycles were no longer permitted. Everyone we saw driving past the private area was a tradesman or a rich old white person in a jaguar, Porsche etc. Public walking areas should not be able to be privatised by people who bought expensive homes nearby. Disappointing to see this

Beautiful hike! Took us about 2.5 hours up with breaks + enjoying the view at the top and about 1.5 down. The northeast side was completely cloud covered, but still awesome. I don't recommend this hike if it rained the day before, it gets very muddy and dangerous. Also lots of stairs near the top, but worth it. The trailhead is located in a gated neighborhood so you must get a pass at the guard gate. Go early (we arrived at 7:30) to ensure you get a pass. Otherwise you have to wait for hikers to finish.

Amazing hike that is only moderately hard to do with incredible views. Only Hawaiian residents can park at the trailhead, otherwise you have to bike up or walk up 1100ft to get to the start. Ridesharing is another option as well.

I took more than 50 pictures but 50 is what Google caps it at. That's how good this hike is. Like many other reviews say, don't try it after it rains. I don't think we would of gotten to the top of it rained a day or two before. It seems like it's always muddy near the top. We got here at 7am and were some of the first people here. After all the parking fills up they won't let you through the gate. You get a hiking pass at the gate that you put in your window so you don't get towed. The hike was moderate for us, but if it rained a day or two before it's probably advanced and I wouldn't attempt without spikes. We spent about 4 hours total on the hike. We stopped a lot for pictures and sat at the top for a good 20 mins. Wear good hiking shoes! You do not want to be slipping and falling on this hike. Starting at 7am we were comfortable the whole time on the hike. Started to get hot when we were leaving at around 11am. Bring plenty water and a snack. Hiking gloves are probably a good idea. We just said screw it and got dirty. Better to get your hands dirty climbing up certain sections than to risk it and fall and hurt yourself or worse. Very steep drops on this hike, take it seriously. The way down is almost harder than the way up because you are sliding down mud. Take it slow. Amazing views and totally worth it! Will definitely be doing this hike again.

Stunning view all across the hike. Could not see much from the top because it was very cloudy, but you will get the chance to see some amazing parts of nature. It also rained a bit, but the ropes across the trail will help you with the hike (both up and down)

One of the best trails on O'ahu! Amazing views extending from makapuu lighthouse to Pearl harbor and the whole east side. 1300 foot elevation gain over 2.3 miles. Beautiful lemon guava lined trail for first half followed by low fern forest covering the ridge. When muddy, use of installed ropes and steps a must. Limited access ensures low traffic on the trail.

Great views! Fairly easy trail at first but gets a little challenging as you approach the summit. You can see both sides of the eastern part of the island from this vantage point.
