Big
Wave
Surf
Tournament
in
the
winter
and
the
Waimea
Roughwater
Swim
in
the
summer,
Waimea
is
a
waterman's
delight.
And
if
the
scorching
sun
and
waves
aren't
your
thing,
seek
refuge
on
the
north
side
of
the
beach
next
to
the
cliffside
in
the
shade.
You
can
see
chalk
on
the
cliffside
where
rock
climbers
have
made
their
ways
up
the
face.
Don't
jump
off
the
big
pohaku
in
the
water
unless
you
know
what
you're
doing.
Only
the
jumps
from
that
rock
that
are
over
open
water
are
doable,
if
reckless!
Little
known
to
most
people
is
the
lava
tube
that
goes
from
one
side
of
the
big
rock
to
the
other,
big
enough
for
expert
swimmers
to
go
through.
I've
done
it
more
then
several
times
over
my
lifetime.
In
the
summer
when
the
bay
is
flat,
you
can
roll
in
the
shorebreak
without
any
fear.
If
you
are
there
on
a
lucky
day
when
the
river
reaches
the
ocean
you
can
even
surf
in
the
waves
that
the
river
makes
during
it's
descent
into
the
ocean.
I
once
saw
a
sunfish
in
the
bay,
scared
the
bejesus
out
of
me,
but
usually
you'll
hear
dolphins
and
whales
in
the
distance
underwater.
It's
one
of
the
most
majestic
beaches
in
the
world.
