Two
months
ago,
my
Soldier
and
I
were
looking
for
motivation
to
do
just
enough
strength
training
to
pass
the
new
Army
Combat
Fitness
Test
(ACFT).
To
paint
the
picture
of
where
we
started
two
months
ago,
my
Soldier
and
I
did
not
understand
the
correct
way
to
lift
weights.
As
a
matter
of
fact,
an
NCO
leading
PT
in
my
last
unit
told
me
to
push
my
behind
out,
round
my
back
and
then
come
up
with
the
weight.
As
a
result,
I
think
I
worsened
my
back
problems
a
lot.
Additionally,
neither
of
us
had
consistently
lifted
much
at
all.
My
Soldier
seemed
to
hate
PT
and
I
had
to
admit
I
was
considering
ending
my
career
if
the
new
ACFT
was
here
to
stay.
But
both
considered
to
give
it
the
good
college
try
and
go
to
a
civilian
personal
trainer.
While
shopping
around
for
trainers
to
meet
our
schedule
and
needs,
I
found
GYMGUYZ
Urban
Honolulu.
I
contacted
them
and
met
up
with
Ms.
May
for
a
free
consultation.
I
met
Ms.
May
at
Ala
Moana
beach,
which
is
a
great
way
to
meet
people
who
may
be
intimated
by
the
gym.
(Even
though
I
am
in
the
military,
I
do
not
know
much
about
weight
lifting.
And
it
definitely
shows
in
the
gym!).
She
evaluated
my
posture,
range
of
motion
and
how
aerobic
I
was
during
the
visit.
She
even
offered
points
of
improvement
free
of
charge.
Ms.
May
is
very
charismatic
and
an
excellent
salesperson.
It
almost
seems
like
charging
for
sessions
were
MY
idea
lol!
But
she
refused
to
discuss
pricing.
She
needed
to
discuss
my
needs
with
the
team
and
then
determine
if
they
could
improve
me
enough
to
meet
the
ACFT
goals
by
deadline
of
two
months.
Ms.
Debbie,
the
owner,
is
a
physiologist
I
think
and
also
met
up
with
my
Soldier
and
I
to
improve
posture
and
form.
(Sadly,
this
old
lady
is
has
been
walking
and
standing
wrongly
for
too
many
years
to
correct
it.
Ms.
Debbie
did
advise
me
but
I
was
too
stubborn
to
follow
through.)
After
the
evaulations,
Ms.
Debbie
called
me
and
told
me
that
given
the
parameters,
she
did
not
think
that
it
would
be
possible
to
get
us
up
to
speed
to
pass
the
ACFT.
But
since
she
was
concerned
for
my
safety
if
we
were
to
continue
training,
she
advised
us
to
do
personal
training
if
only
to
get
us
started
lifting
weights
without
hurting
ourselves.
Ms.
Debbie
paired
us
with
Mr.
Zane.
Mr.
Zane
was
not
military
but
understood
the
military
tests
and
needs
extraordinarily.
Surprisingly,
he
did
not
start
training
us
as
if
we
had
been
working
out
consistently.
He
started
us
doing
minimal
exercise
and
a
lot
of
stretching.
I
was
a
skeptic
at
first
but
after
a
couple
of
sessions,
we
clearly
needed
that
start!
He
graduated
us
to
weight
lifting,
starting
with
form.
With
every
exercise,
he
assessed
if
we
were
in
any
physical
pain
or
if
something
did
not
feel
right.
He
was
very
nurturing
and
encouraging.
We
never
felt
ashamed
for
not
doing
what
others
were
doing.
Eventually
after
two
months,
my
Soldier
and
I
went
from
barely
lifting
60
lbs
consistently
and
hating
PT
to
being
able
to
not
only
pass
every
event
but
surpass
it!
My
Soldier
is
tiny
but
can
now
lift
135
lbs!
I
can
lift
180
lbs.
We
can
perform
planks
longer
than
we
ever
have
and
running
is
not
a
problem
as
well.
He
even
improved
our
ball-throwing
technique
to
be
able
to
throw
even
further.
Most
importantly,
I
was
able
to
do
this
training
without
being
in
so
much
back
pain
the
next
day
I
would
have
to
literally
roll
myself
onto
the
floor
to
get
out
of
it.
I
can
now
get
out
of
bed
naturally
and
even
run
the
next
day
after
weight
lifting!
I
even
postponed
my
visit
to
the
pain
clinic,
which
I
never
did
before
training
with
Mr.
Zane.
My
Soldier
experienced
little
to
no
back
pain
as
well.
Bonus:
My
Soldier
now
wants
to
work
out
more!
She
actually
gets
upset
when
we
have
to
work
past
the
time
to
meet
up
with
Mr.
Zane.
I
have
to
admit
that
it
made
me
look
forward
to
pt
as
well.
I
said
all
this
to
say
that
I
was
thoroughly
impressed
with
GYMGUYZ!
And
I
am
so
glad
that
I
spent
the
money
for
this.
It
was
worth
it!
