This is well worth the hike up to the summit. You need to hike along the road to the location of the fort. Then you turn right up the hill past the parking area an finally through the tunnel. This tunnel goes through the crater wall and as you come out, you will see before you a large open area. Follow the path that is alongside the road and eventually you will arrive at the beginning of the trail to the top of Diamond Head. The hike up the trail is very easy. You do not need hiking boots as the trail is cement lined and has a guard rail along the side. There are many switch backs and the views as you approach the summit are fantastic. Also look at the rocks along the way. There are excellent examples of welded tufts from the return of the hot ask filled cloud during the eruption of this volcano. At the top there is an excellent view of the city of Honolulu and surrounding areas. It is amazing how the residential areas go up the side of the mountains around the island. Also look out at the ocean and realize that you are in the middle of the great ocean of the Pacific. The water has a shimmering blue green color. Also if you look carefully one can see the many waves coming in off the in the distance. It is not easy to take pictures at the top because of all the people. Also there are the remains of a military facility at the walk down from the top. You will then know that the stairs (I counted about 150) are well worth traversing to arrive at the top. There is also a tunnel that is high enough that me at over 6 feet never worried of hitting my head. The wall down is very pleasant. Be aware that near the top there’s two paths, stay to the right. That I the path down. We consider this hike as the highlight of one it trip. When you arrive at the bus stop take the #2 bus back to Honolulu. Remember that the best way to take the bus is to purchase a bus ticket at the ABC Store near your hotel and the menu hotels there.

This is one of my favorite hikes in Oahu now! Takes your breath away! Literally, I wanted to stop along narrow trails and make pictures and there is a way. Nevertheless the paths by the mountain are narrow people find the way to go by in two directions. There is a tunnel on the way, it lit, you have an option to hang on to the rail if you want and it’s beautiful too, plus it’s not that long and seeing the light at the end of the tunnel feels great! After the tunnel you have an option to challenge yourself and go on a old staircase straight up or choose a less inclined path. I choose the less inclined path, and for those who like me wants to make many pictures that’s the way. At the Summit there are plenty of space to find your way to make unforgettable memorabilia! Overall this hike will make your body work for about an hour and if you stretch a bit before will help with your leg muscles. Plus have a bottle of water with you to help your heart too. Anyone could do it and we saw little children walking up as well. Definitely to be on your checklist to do in Oahu!

The view from top of Diamond Head is awe inspiring. The hike is pretty long and up hill. You need a reservation for entry, but as long as you plan it a few days ahead you should be fine. If you aren't used to hiking up hill, plan to take several rest breaks on the way up. Hike up takes 30 min to 60 min depending on speed and breaks. Coming down is about 20 to 40 min. Plan for 15 to 20 at top. Lots of overlook points along the path. I included a picture of the worst set of stairs, but they also have a more moderate way around them (longer walk but less stairs and more gradual climb)

absolutely beautiful hike from the beginning to the end. it's about 1.5 miles round trip, I would consider it an easy to moderate hike. as of now (04/21), you have to wear your mask the entirety of the hike.

The hike was easy and the views are amazing when you reach the top of the mountain. It’s a lot harder to go down the mountain but a really good way to hike and enjoy the views. I highly recommend when coming to Hawaii. The cost for the hike is 5 dollars a person and you can make your reservation online.

Great hike. I started from Waikiki and it was a 12 kilometre (7.5 miles) return trip. It was an easy hike and the views along the way are breathtaking. Take plenty of water and a snack with you as it can get really hot throughout the day. Plenty of parking too. Well worth doing if you are in Honolulu.

Very fun and decent level of family hike with Terrific panoramic view! Various courses throughout, starting with paved path, rock, staircase, etc. I didn’t catch sunrise, as the park opens @ 6am. We visited in June, sun rises @ 5:50. But surely we Had a great time. Be there as early as possible still. Must-visit in Waikiki area! Thank you!

Definitely a must-do for first-time tourists! It's a relatively easy hike with lots of parking. Tickets are mandatory to enter the park that can be bought in the beginning. I recommend going early morning when the heat isn't at its peak. Overall incredible views and an interesting walk up

Hiking to the Diamondhead Summit is no walk in the park, so it’s important to know your limits and come prepared. Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are a must, as this trail can be quite challenging. But let me tell you, the effort is absolutely worth it. One of the most awe-inspiring experiences I had here was watching the sunrise. For those who appreciate the early hours of the day, I strongly recommend purchasing your tickets in advance and selecting a time that suits you. I opted for the sunrise option because I anticipated cooler temperatures and knew the view would be nothing short of spectacular. Additionally, make sure to bring something to drink. Hydration is key on this hike, and you’ll be thankful for it, especially on a warm day. Parking is available, but the lot is small, and there’s a $10 fee to park. Plan accordingly, and consider carpooling if you’re traveling with a group. Keep in mind that Diamondhead is a highly sought-after destination, so it’s no secret that you won’t be alone on the trail. Be prepared to share this incredible journey with other like-minded hikers. The camaraderie adds to the experience, and you’ll find yourself in good company as you conquer the Diamondhead Summit.

The view from the summit is stunning, so I highly encourage getting all the way here. From the entrance, getting to the top is not too hard, but beware of the many steps. Before Covid, the stairs were very crowded and there were significant queues. I would say that most people should be able to reach the summit, but I would recommend 1) asking the staff at the entrance if you have any concern - they are very friendly and may have special dispensations, 2) bring water with you, 3) bring suncream and a hat - it can be very hot in the summer months.

Relatively easy hike up to the top of Diamond Head, except for the stairs at the end (but there's an easier but longer route around to the top if stairs aren't for you). But the reward once you arrive at the top is an amazing 360 degree view of the ocean and the island. Can't really describe it into words. Just go and see for yourself!

Nice walk up to the top of Diamond Head. I was concerned it would be too hard, so I didn’t plan on going up. I had a knee replacement last year and was concerned about steps. I went to the top on flip flops. It’s a good walking trail till you get 3/4 of the way to the top with hand rails so you can walk at your own pace. It splits at that point with stairs going up to the right side and a cave to go through. If you go to the left it’s an easy way to the top. It has some stairs, but nothing too hard. Great view at the top. Places to park and restrooms at the base. Nice hike.

Absolutely amazing. It was a good hike to the top and the view was well worth it. It was pretty busy, but still plenty of spots to stop and take in the view and get some amazing photos. Reserve a ticket in advance so you are guaranteed a spot as it does sell out fairly quickly.

My favorite hike on Oahu so far! It’s the perfect length/difficulty level; I think it took us 45 minutes to get to the top. Gorgeous view and plenty of space to stop and take a breather up there, even with all the people. There is a tunnel that can feel quite claustrophobic, but it isn’t too terribly long. I definitely felt panicked on the way in, but had no issues leaving as I knew about how long I’d be in there. After the tunnel, you can take the old stairs that are almost straight up, or the new stair case that has a more gradual incline.

A good hike that is not too strenuous. It gets a little crowded at the top but the views are definitely worth it with one side being the vast pacific ocean while the other a nice skyline of the city of Honolulu. It is advisable to have a hat and water, but it is also not too long of a hike (approximately 1.5 to 2 hours to and back).

Not an easy hike, but doable. Looking back into the history or the place was cool and the view from the top? Spectacular ! This place does require reservations!! Only allowed to come in and park approx. 15 minutes before scheduled time. Walking in didn't seem to matter.

Great hike up to the peak with a viewing platform and pillbox. Strenuous at times with the switchbacks and stairs. Can be hot so bring your water. Beautiful views of Honolulu and the eastern side of the island

Don’t get me wrong - once you get up there it’s beautiful- esp with thousands of people with you. There is elevation, uneven surface about 1K+ and I would highly recommend a headlight if you are trying to catch sunrise. You can use your phone flashlight like most people but I prefer to be handsfree. Hard for the little ones unless they have hiked previously. Narrow spots for single file. Thousands of people during holidays (Maybe I went during tour groups?)

Great trail with a (relatively) well paved path. The trail is a bit steep but overall difficulty is manageable for those used to walking in hilly areas. I was able to complete this hike with an infant strapped to my chest with only moderate difficulty though there is plenty of room for people to stop and take breaks along the way if necessary. There is a magnificent view at the top which makes the effort entirely worth it. I would recommend reserving a slot earlier in the morning. We did the hike at 6 am and were able to catch a beautiful sun rise from the top of this inactive volcano.

Easy hike! Anyone any age could do it. Also can grab bfast & coconut at the bottom

This hike was absolutely incredible. It's very hot in sunny and warm weather, but the views you get at the end are AMAZING. I was not an in shape person for this hike and was able to do it in under an hour, but if I did it again I would take more breaks. It looks intimidating, but people are literally there working out on the steps, so it's not unachievable. We actually walked from Waikiki but that was like an entire hike before a hike. Next time I would get a Lyft or take the bus. I think there is still a fee to enter and they required cash for us a few years ago, so plan ahead.

Very easy and well maintained trial. Don’t forget to bring your water! take a break and get to the top. Reservation is required for entry or entry & parking. You can park at the spot before the entrance with 10$. It is 4 hours parking and it is long enough for your hike. The view is amazing and must see spot!

The views are nice, but the hike up is so super busy, even early in the morning. I preferred other hikes much more. This one also is pretty much walking on solid stone, not too challenging. Crowded on top. Easy hike overall. Good challenge for a very early morning run.

One of the best scenic points in Oahu with great views of Waikiki. Well worth the easy trek up the crater. Do go up earlier in the day to avoid the heat, when it's much cooler and less crowded.

Short and sweet. Great hike for beginners, only takes about 10 minutes to reach the summit from the ticket stands. I recommend coming here your first day on the island. It's a good synchronization point for the main city and surrounding area. There's a few suggestions about where you can and can't go, even referencing Hawaiian laws 🙄. Regardless, if you truly want a good viewpoint, you'll find it.

Once you get past all the walking up in the same direction path including the metal stairs up to the summit, you will see this beautiful view of the city and nature! The highest point is technically up some extra few stairs where not many people fit, so people just take turns especially since this is where everyone will be taking pictures. Be aware of your surroundings and just be safe!

  • 5/5 Stephanie S. 2 years ago on Google
Please stay on trail and do not climb off the summit to the other bunker. It is dangerous and honestly just ruins pictures.

The trail to go to the top is not that hard. There are lots of stairs though. When you get to the top you’ll see a gorgeous view of the city and the mountains. Down the hill there are some food trucks. You can buy smoothies and other foods.
