Waʻahila Ridge Trail

Hiking area

👍👍 Full hike to Mt. Olympus. I arrived on a January Thursday morning at 7:40AM to an empty parking lot. It had not rained for 2 days and temperatures were 69⁰ - 75⁰. The hike up to the lower Wa'ahila Ridge is well maintained and mostly shaded. A few up hills and down hills and climbing large rocks.... People often mention hike, trail, views, Olympus, parking, ropes, muddy,

Full hike to Mt. Olympus. I arrived on a January Thursday morning at 7:40AM to an empty parking lot. It had not rained for 2 days and temperatures were 69⁰ - 75⁰. The hike up to the lower Wa'ahila Ridge is well maintained and mostly shaded. A few up hills and down hills and climbing large rocks. Using both hands will become necessary. Then you reach a fork with a sign pointing left to Kolowalu Trail (This leads you down the mountain) Take the one on the right to Mt. Olympus. You are now on the 2nd half of the trail. It is decently maintained and shaded half of the times. This is where all the excitement is! You will encounter a few narrow trail spots with cliffs on both sides. A few steep inclines where you'll use both hands to climb. There are ropes attached that may be helpful (not needed on a dry day) I could not fully avoid the few wet mud spots. 360⁰ views from the summit. There are no large flat areas on the summit. 15 minutes later, the next hiking group made it up. Going down, I encountered a couple dozen hikers. At 12:15pm, the parking lot had filled up but still had several parking spaces. As a 5'9 150lb fit male, It took 2 hrs 15 to get to the summit and another 2 hrs to get down. I brought 2 L of water and finished 1L. This hike is not too difficult as old and young hikers make it up to Mt. Olympus. I don't recommend dogs or children doing the 2nd half tho.

This was a Physical trail with alot of ups and downs, climbs and ropes. I made it all the way up to Mount Olympus. But it definitely was challenging for me. Bring plenty of water, I burn though a liter just going up to top. A hat, sunscreen ,off bug spray and a walking stick if you have one. Bring a gallon zip lock bag if you want to collect some strawberry grave. Make sure to soak them in warm salt water to get rid of the parasites and auts that hide in them. Bring a extra set of clothes and shoes with a garbage bag to put all your Muddy stuff in after the hike. I hope this helps you out and have great day.

Trail is so nice. I'm a benigger it was not so easy not so hard. Not muddy I went in a dry day. Plenty of parking clean restrooms. Phone service at all times and path is clear. I recommend having sticks and flores bc some parts you gonna squat.

What an experience! When people said this was a hard trail..they weren't kidding. 1000+ ft elevation change with steep inclines and incredibly narrow pathways combined with mud made this quite difficult. Hiking shoes are a must and consider wearing gloves as you will be using your hands to get up and down some sections and to adequately grip the ropes that you need to get up certain areas. We made it to just 100 ft or so from Mt. Olympus summit but could do the last part with ropes because of the mud. Took a total of ~5hr. Not a hike for beginners!

Beautiful, quiet area to visit to get away from the crowds. The pines, though invasive are beautiful to walk around through. The views are spectacular.

This hike is literally amazing! It's not terribly hard, just long. The views are amazing. You eventually are in the clouds that rain on Manila valley. Can be a bit muddy at parts, and a little rock climbing but SOOOOO worth it.

One of the best views on Honolulu. Easy hike, just bring some shoes with good traction of it's winter

The Kolowalu Trail is a great option for hikers of all levels. The trail starts from a large parking lot and park, with beautiful views of the entrance. The trail is 4.1 kilometers long, with a mix of gentle and steep slopes. The trail is not technical enough to require ropes, but it does offer some challenging sections. The views from the trail are also incredible, with stunning views of Diamond Head to Honolulu International Airport.

I loved this hike. Beautiful views of the valleys on both sides and also Waikiki. Pine trees, strawberry guava plants, and bird song all along the trail. There are stunning views about 20 minutes along in a little clearing by the power lines. Uphill but pretty easy. Dry today but would be really muddy after rain. The entry drive, parking lot, and picnic areas are closed in April for construction. You can park in the neighborhood and walk in. Restrooms might be open, but if not, there are two porta potties at the trailhead.

Great hike not too far of the distance. If you see the sign it's not warn off for danger, it's there in case of you are unable to finish it back out because of any of sudden physical conditions.

Beautiful hike, for me its the best hike on Oahu. Its a long hike, we needed 6 hours with breaks and taking pictures. When it rained it gets pretty muddy, no way you wont get dirty. I felt pretty safe on the hike though, because you are always surrounded by trees and plants you can hold on. When you are sporty, you will easily make it to the top. :)

This was such a beautiful trail. Very muddy/slippery up to Olympus but rhe view was worth it. The ropes were a little had to climb because they had so much mud. On a dry day this trail would be much easier

Mt Olumpus hike Very mentally challenging because once you think you're at the top, theres more; that and on the way back, theres a steep uphill towards the finish (unlike most hikes where its downhill). Alltrails is good to help guide you. Theres multiple rest spots. Theres gonna be a reddish ribbon when you're done. Trail gets muddy towards the top so bring proper footwear. Not for beginners. Took me 4 and a half hours including my 45 minute break at the peak

Amazing hike with even better views of both the north and south sides of the island but not for inexperienced hikers.

THERE ARE 2 TRAILS for those reading these reviews If you’re doing the first trail, you can probably do it in Converse or Crocs. I saw families, dogs and children. 2km up and 2km down. The second part of the trail is MT OLYMPUS which is incredibly challenging. I have written a very comprehensive review if you Google Mt Olympus / Awa’awaloa. If you’re sticking to the first bit, go for gold. You’ll have a good time. If you’re doing Mt Olympus, maybe reconsider. The park is seriously legit with plenty of parking, picnic tables, flat areas and clean bathrooms.

Really a beautiful trail with great views of downtown Waikiki. Pretty easy trail with not too much mud until you’re about 2.5 miles in. Had to turn back after that to prevent my sneakers from drowning in mud. Decent number of people on the trail and is well marked.

OMG 😳 this was an adventure going up to mount Olympus. Toughest hike we’ve done in Oahu. So glad we didn’t bring the kids. It was raining, windy and muddy. It was soo slippery. We had soo much fun but we were a mess by the time we were done. Took us about 5 hours to go up and back down.

The trail is much too austere for little ones; saw few families, even one with an infant, all turned around at the steep bolder obstacles. This trail is more challenging than Koko Head Stairs, for sure. Breathtaking views of Diamond head crater, Waikiki, the valley, some parts of the west shore, and even the occassional, photo-bombing UFO .. you decide.

Fun hike. Great view of the city and mountains. But bring bug spray because the mosquitos 🦟 are vicious.

Nice place for a hike and picnic. The trail itself goes on for some distance but you do get a lot of nice places to take pictures and just enjoy the nature. A lot of parking spots but it does get packed quickly.

Great run/hike. Difficulty rated appropriately. Slippery sections when wet but fixed ropes in place to hang onto. Some light scrambles.
