I had such a delightful time at this restaurant. It was the most delicious meal ever and the manager was so beyond nice. It was my daughters birthday and although we didn’t have reservations the manager was able to book us in. I really appreciate their kindness and hospitality. The pork tonkatsu is very tasty juice and delicious. I recommend going here if you are craving delicious food!

Service to quality and attention to detail all five stars. The restaurant creating something great here starting from the decor of a real Japanese restaurant without much English. The mustard on the Katsu was 💰 money. Really brought out the flavor of the meat The tenderloin is less fatty meat , while the pork loin is more fatty (I would compare it to a rib eye on beef). I liked the tender loin better but both were excellent! The pickles were really good and the experience of grinding your own sesame seeds is great. Highly recommended

We had reservations on a Friday at 6:30 pm. Reservations are highly recommended. When we arrived, there was a sign indicating they are fully booked, but it looks like take out is available too. They seat the entire restaurant at the same time. When you order, you pick a katsu combo, rice (3 choices - white, seasoned, & something called 16 grains), and miso soup (red/white miso & clams/tofu). I had the pork tenderloin and oyster katsu with red miso soup & clams. The katsu was AMAZING. The pork was incredibly tender and the breading was so crunchy. My favorite was actually the oyster katsu though. If I were to go back, I would just order that. The katsu is served with cabbage which comes with 2 sauces and you can refill the cabbage and rice while you are eating. My dining companions had the pork/shrimp combo and sizzling miso combo. They both really enjoyed their food. I would highly recommend eating at Tonkatsu Tamafuji!

The food is great. I can't dispute that. But the reason for my three star review is the service. My party of two ordered our food at 12:50 p.m. but the food did not arrive until 1:42 p.m. On top of that, hot tea is supposed to come with the meal but they did not serve it until we specifically asked for it.

The only thing not Japanese is the waiter’s service attitude to my pickup order…. But the taste is 6 star so I have to put 5 star here. Words are not enough to describe. Pics can tell. It is a shame they don’t do takeaway for sizzling pot. But tender pork loin and pork loin bentos are already great. Check out their toast slices for Sando sandwich and their plate saying Japanese rice being served. This place brings authentic taste. FYI: parking downstairs would need you to have reservation of the restaurant first. We were told it was reservation only but I saw people waiting outside seemingly for walk-in when I picked up my takeaway.

While planning my trip to Oahu, my friend told me that this place is highly recommended, but unfortunately, all reservations were booked out throughout the duration of my vacation. However, we decided to get takeout because I just wanted some tonkatsu one night. The location was like a 20 minute walk from Waikiki, so it was manageable. Thinking that food would be ready in 30 minutes, we ordered while walking there. Boy were we wrong! It actually took an hour for our order to be ready! The wait was totally worth it though. The way they pack their takeout boxes is so cute and practical. At first, I thought they didn't provide chopsticks, but I was surprised that it was taped to the inside of the takeout box instead. Their clam miso soup was so good; there was a decent amount of clams in there too. The tonkatsu was amazinggg! It was so crispy, light and airy. I also liked that you got to choose different flavors of rice (so many places often just offer white rice). Wish I could've dined in at Tamafuji to get a true experience, but take out was still delicious.

Reserve weeks in advance or prepare to wait! We did take out option instead & it wasn't the full experience but still tasted great! Really light breading on the cheese katsu which brought out the flavors of the chicken well! The katsu sandwiches are a MUST! Will be back, but will try to opt for dine in next time

We both like to eat a lot. Looking at the tonkatsu, I was tempted to order two dishes. I'm glad I went with just one. We were absolutely stuffed afterward. Everything was delicious. The outside was perfectly crunchy and the meat was super tender and juicy. You can tell that a lot of work goes into making every dish. The restaurant is clean and beautiful inside and the service was spectacular. Dont try to drop in though. This place is booked waaaaay out. We had to book our reservations almost a month out. So definitely plan ahead if you want to eat here, especially if you're visiting while on vacation. I would like to see a bigger drink menu, but Kirin goes down great with tonkatsu.

The tonkatsu was crunchy and excellent. Recommend getting the aged pork loin without any sauce on it - the sauce will make the pork soggy almost instantly. The cheese version is a good way to get the crunch without the sogginess. The chicken and shrimp were also excellent. Recommend the yuzu dressing on the cabbage as well.

Chicken and Pork Katsu were both excellent! I was never a huge fan of Katsu but this place changed my mind. It does get busy so it may be worth making a reservation. We were still able to order takeout though and the takeout box was the best I've ever seen. 9.5/10

friendly staff, delicious food. we had the pork loin katsu and the pork tenderloin & oyster katsu combo. they have limited seating and are very busy, would recommend making a reservation well in advance.

Normally, you have to book this place weeks in advance, but luckily, they were able to squeeze us in right before closing. The wait staff was very polite and the restaurant itself was very clean and orderly. Outside of Japan, this is the most authentic version of tonkatsu that I’ve experienced. The pieces of pork were fried perfectly, the plums pickled just right, and the sake was hitting the spot. If you’re in Honolulu, this had better be on your itinerary.

The aged Pork made the Katsu so moist and tender. The seasoned rice with octopus was heavenly. This place is better than the Katsu place in Tokyo (forgot the name) which was packed. Highly recommend, worth the wait. We were lucky to get reservations for 4 in such short notice, thanks to the concierge @ Ritz Carlton.

This place is good but few things bothered me.… 1. The ventilation is not good, meaning everything you are wearing, including your hair will reek of fried smell, I showered and cannot get rid of the smell. My eyes started tearing from the smoke…I asked the waiter to open the entrance door, she did not do it. Be aware. 2. The donkatsu breading is too thick. 3. Shrimp katsu was over cooked. 4. Wait is 1hr 30mins -2hrs if you are walking in. Couple things I loved.. your cabbage salads are refillable and the yuzu soy/sesame salad sauce is absolutely delightful. Side picked dishes are refillable too. If I need to get my donkatsu on in hawaii I would head back to Ginza Bairin.

The wait was about an hour for us to get seated and once we got our food, it meal was delicious. There were many side dishes that paired well with the meat and got us full by the end of the meal. Overall, for the experience, the wait and cost was well worth it. The only downfall was I wish our servers were more attentive or came to check up on us as we were in need of water refills and other assistances.

We took a chance and walked-in and luckily, we got seated right away. We ordered the pork loin katsu set (300g) and it tasted heavenly. The meat just melts in your mouth - it was by far the best katsu I’ve had! The white miso clam soup and the mixed rice was super good too. It definitely made our last night in Honolulu and we’ll definitely keep coming back to this place. 11/10! ⭐️

Read the reviews that reservations had to be made months in advance (heard the worker say 6 months (?) over the phone) but they do have very limited walk in spots / can walk in wait for a possible cancellation/ no show spots. We got there a little after opening time ~5-10min and there were already names down for walk in time and people also waiting for a no show. We were given choice to either choose to pick reservation for 6:45 (got there around 5) or wait 5 min for a cancellation as the group had 5 more minutes left in their reservation time before it was too late. We chose the wait 5 min and luckily got in! Food is delicious 🤤. At first, the price seemed too much for tonkatsu sets. But they give you pickled side dishes, rice, cabbage salad, miso soup, and we got hot tea to end everything. If we could have, would have tried it again for different sets! Tonkatsu is super juicy, tender, and crispy You get to pound your own sesame seed and choose from 2 tonkatsu sauce. Forget the name but the one with sauce pouring over that sizzles - it tastes good. But the crispy outer layer gets soggy so do be aware of that. 💯 recommend. If you don’t have reservation go walk in quick because it’s very popular

Avoid on the weekend! We came at opening time at 5pm on Sunday without a booking and there were around 15-20 people waiting outside and they said we were unlikely to get a table. We arrived again the next day on Monday at opening time at 4pm and there was only 1 party ahead of us for waiting for booking no shows. At 4.15pm they called us and we were able to have an early dinner. Though by the time we finished our dinner at 5.30pm the restaurant was quite empty so imagine you could come around then and still get a table on a weekday. Food was quite delicious. My partner got the 300g of pork loin and it was much better and tastier. I got the 180g and it was too lean and not as good. Unlimited cabbage and choice of different rice and miso soups! The kayak is quite hot and the bottom can get soggy quickly due to the steam. Flip the pieces a bit to allow more airflow.

Wow the food and service are amazing here! We just randomly picked somewhere with high reviews after returning snorkeling gear nearby. We almost gave up as we saw the waiting list, but luckily we were seated within 15 min and I am so glad we did wait! (We arrived at ~1pm on Sunday). The signature katsu is delicious and comes with large portion. You also get to grind your own katsu dressing at the beginning; don’t know whether it’s a Japanese ritual but it’s pretty interesting! They also walk around and provide unlimited salad and dressing refill. We were really full but only finished 2/3, and I saw everyone was asking packing box at the end haha! Overall, outstanding experience and feels authentic with affordable price!

This is the most authentic Japanese Tonkatsu restaurant I’ve ever tried. It’s also quite the popular spot as reservations fill up and you walk in for us was a 60-75 minute wait. However, once you sit down the experience is priceless. All their sets come with your choice of miso soup and rice. On top of that you get complimentary pickled veggies and unlimited shredded cabbage to eat with your fried foods. I went with the classic pork loin set but the tenderloin was also delicious. For your meat, the dipping sauce starts by grinding your own sesame seeds then pouring some sweet and spicy sauces over them. The cabbage comes with a miso dressing and a sesame dressing that were both flavorful. The pork was the star of the show and super tender. After finishing a big plate I was so stuffed and smelled like fried oil but it was worth it. Such a cool restaurant to try!

Service 10/10, food 10/10, experience 10/10 Cannot recommend this place enough. It was the BEST katsu I have ever had. So fresh, insane breading!!!!, and overall just very thoughtfully curated and made. Worth the wait but I would suggest going on off hours. Making the sauce was fun and I loved how kind the staff was. One of my favorite places and I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in Oahu

MAKE RESERVATIONS! That's my first tip. Everything else are probably discussed below. The oysters are actually really good! And for a little bit more, I would suggest getting the egg. It makes the experience so much more unique.

So good!!! We were nearby and it was about 2pm so we thought they were closing but they still accepted new customers. We had the pork tonkatsu 180g and the oyster and shrimp katsu. It was so good!!! My husband thought this was the best meal we had in Honolulu. I though it was so good too. I live their fancy rice. There are three kinds and no additional fee. I also live their miso soup and it was so good. The clam white miso soup were super good. Would definitely come visit again if we were here.

Here I thought I had the best Tonkatsu in the world located in Tokyo, Japan from Tonkatsu Marugo. Boy I was wrong, Tonkatsu Tamafuji has exceeded all of my expectations and more. Ate here for my last meal before leaving Hawaii, oh my goodness, I can now die in peace with no regrets.

  • 5/5 Helen W. 1 year ago on Google
Really enjoyed my meal here and the experience! Each entree came with rice and miso soup, which there are a few options to choose from. We also got to grind our own sesame for our sauce which was neat. They have two sauces for the meat, and personally I really enjoyed the sweeter sauce. The two we got were the medium size pork katsu and the combo. The pork is very juicy and flavourful. The combo comes with 1 piece of everything besides the pork. It was perfect for those who are indecisive on what they want. I felt we could even order just the small pork and still be very full. Everything was really delicious and the service was amazing as well.

Loved it! The food lived up to the hype. The rice (3 options: white, seasoned or 16 grain) amazing! The miso soup (2 options white or red/2 types clam & tofu or tofu & green onions). The tonkatsu was soft and moist on the inside and crispy crunchy on the outside. Make reservations!! Seating is by reservations only. Parking under the building, elevator access to 2nd floor, wheelchair accessible, bathrooms on same level with code access that were clean and spacious.

Make a reservation! We were lucky to walk up and get a table, but only because another reservation was a no-show. This was the best katsu I've had. We had pork, shrimp, chicken, and oyster to share between the two of us. The pork was our favorite, but they were all SO good. The sauces were great too. If you are confused on how to use anything, just ask your server. They are used to explaining it.

  • 5/5 Curtis L. 2 years ago on Google
Great tonkatsu with sauces. Reservations recommended of course but we got super lucky just walked in and didn't have to wait. Get the biggest tonkatsu option. Miso soup tasty also.

  • 5/5 Elaine L. 2 years ago on Google
Great fast service. Nice crispy breading that they make in house. Fun to crush the sesame seeds. I preferred a mix of the sweet and original tonkatsu sauce. Also prefer white over red miso. Tenderloin pieces were very tender. Unlimited cabbage and rice. I preferred the mixed rice over the seasoned. The Katsu sandwich (sando) carried well on the plane. The servers were super nice and attentive. Best to call for a reservation

Make sure to get a reservation if you can. We ordered the pork, shrimp and oysters. Perfectly fried. We had fun grinding our own sesame and enjoying the different variations of ice.
