I don't like any place where photography is not allowed during non worship hours. The Great Saint Martin Church (German: Groß Sankt Martin, mostly Groß St. Martin) is a Romanesque Catholic church in Cologne, Germany. Its foundations (circa 960 AD) rest on remnants of a Roman chapel, built on what was then an island in the Rhine. The church was later transformed into a Benedictine monastery. The current buildings, including a soaring crossing tower that is a landmark of Cologne's Old Town, were erected between 1150-1250. The church was badly damaged in World War II; restoration work was completed in 1985.

As you look from the opposite side of the Rhine, three buildings immediately stand out - the cathedral, the town hall and this magnificent romanesque church. The "current" church was built between 1150 and 1250 although it had to be almost completely restored after World War Two and only reopened in 1985.

Great St. Martin is one of the beautifully restored romanesque churches in the city after it was almost completely destroyed during WW II. Part of the tower was originally integrated into the old city wall fortifications. The inside is kept very simple with only a few classical religious works of art on display. Currently, a newer monastic community resides at the church, and its members hold their daily prayers of the hours in the church.

Fantastic church very close to the riverfront area; not as detailed architecture as the Cologne cathedral, but still has it's own uniqueness.

Beautiful church, worth a visit to come and look around. You won’t be disappointed. Come for a service if you can (and if that’s your sort of thing), but don’t bring kids as they’ll get bored. Maybe just walk through so that they can look around in wonder at this creation.

Started in 960 AD as a romanesque building then got destroyed one thousand years later during WW2... The newly rebuilt church looks very much alike old one from the outside, but the inside is completely empty (as if it's a lutheran church).

Absolutely a hidden gem in Cologne. Beautiful church with a lot of history behind it. I visited when there was no one else there and the silence was near deafening making it s rather surreal experience. I would highly recommend visiting this church before Kölner Dom as it will allow you to appreciate just how much larger it is.

Great St. Martin is one of the twelve major Romanesque churches in Cologne. Its three-aisled basilica with cloverleaf east choir and square four-tower tower is one of the most striking landmarks in the city panorama. The basilica was built in the 12th century on the foundations of Roman buildings. After the destruction in the Second World War, the rebuilding continued until 1985.

Stunning! We came for a service during a weekday which included about 8 nuns and priests singing into the clover echo chamber to produce a magical Acapella concert (for free!) ... Later when the underground was open we went to explore the 2,000 year old foundation. It was wonderful! The place is small, but for 0.50 EUR it's well worth a visit (try to join a service with singing for the full glory).

I avoided the potential long lines for the tower by going in the morning. I visited in the fall when it was rather cool. I can't imagine doing the climb during the summer heat. The mostly circular stone staircase is narrow. I'm not a fan of tight spaces, and so in a tiny corner of my mind, I was possibly freaking out. All that said, the tower climb is recommended if you can. The views are fantastic.

Amazing church with well preserved columns still showing colours after both centuries and wars. Roman ruins underground and very helpful and friendly staff, a must see.

Very old but good looking church from the outside, the inside is a bit dissapointing tho.

The Church is spectacular. And the surrounding landscape is very beautiful. I really like the city of Cologne.
