All accommodation is exorbitant in Waikiki. Some very mediocre hotels are charging AUD400 a night. So just bear it for a few days. There are many hotels within 200m, so book this place with confidence. You can transfer to any one of the other hotels if you really don't like this place. I stayed in a semi private twin room. ( approx AUD150/night). Something cheaper would be YMCA for a private room in hostel type accommodation. ( homeless person quoted $US85 a night for a female private room). The other hostels were booked out. Pros: * Location is excellent. There's heaps to do and you won't be spending too much time in your room anyway. * Bedding tolerable and unlimited towels. * AC in each room, room smells clean. * Safe to walk around the area, even at night. * It's very social and everyone is friendly and nice. You can team up with others to go exploring. Neutral: * The reception is manned 5am to 1am, which are quite long hours. They try to be as helpful as possible. The staff are quite young and look like other backpackers doing shifts. If you ask them a question, you can hear them googling stuff and repeating it back to you. I left my passport and a large sum of money for safekeeping but they just left it on the front counter instead of a safe. Umm... Oh well, they are doing their best. * They use electronic keys . It's difficult using these keys if your hands are full of luggage. Make sure your phone is charged. You need your phone even to go to the bathroom. * Each room has either microwave or fridge, not both. Shared by several. My bananas got accidentally stolen by someone else so I didn't keep any food in the fridge. * No blankets but weather was perfect. Cons: * They don't provide tea or coffee or make pancakes for breakfast. * Kitchen is a mess, but it will do for emergencies. * Hammock area is a mess... not pretty. * No elevator, only stairs. Hard with luggage. I had knee problems and I was on the 4th floor. * My first room had sand all over it. The people using the bathroom left the shower curtain outside the tub and the bathroom floor was always flooded. There was always hair ( girls' long hair and shaved beard hair) in the sink. The dorm mates were always noisy. * The dorm mates and bathroom in the second room were better. This bathroom had no soap in the dispenser. The AC remote was missing. * They don't provide adapters for plug points or phone chargers.

I'm 188cm / 6'2 tall, which is not exceptionally tall. But I only *just* fit in the bunk bed. Very tight fit. But yes I still fit. If you're taller than 188cm/6'2, you might not fit. Just remember that your standing height is less than your comfortable lying down length. There are no blankets either. Just sheets. Thankfully it wasn't cold enough to require more than that. But if you need more, probably bring a sleeping bag. So these things were not problems for me, but just consider if you'd be OK. This place is very affordable. I was happy with everything, considering the price. The common area is open-air, under the building. There are shared fridges and a stove and tables and chairs. The dorms have lockers, and I bought a lock for USD$8 from the reception desk. The dorm bathrooms have a toilet, sink and shower/bath. I'm not sure if my dorm air-conditioning worked, because it wasn't hot enough to turn it on/test. But for some reason a fan was placed in our room (maybe because the air-conditioning wasn't working I'm not sure. Again, it wasn't hot enough to require air-conditioning). The staff are very very nice and helpful. The location is very central. The building is 4 levels tall.

I booked the room and arrived to the hostel, I had to lay down. I was very exhausted during the day. I previously called to see if I booked the right bed, because it said that I booked a twin bed, when I called woman told me that there're only bunk beds and they are actually twin beds, which is a straight lie, because bunk beds are one person beds and twin beds are almost twice wider. I agreed anyways because was exhausted and wanted to lay down. When I arrived I ve met this woman that I talked to and she proclaimed that I couldn't stay at the hostel because I wasnt ongoing travel and don't have flight out. I haven't heard more bs excuse in my life, but I preferred not to argue and save my energy for something better. Hostel has also poorly maintained appearance on the first sight even I hadn't seen the rooms yet. It's so unfortunate to go on vacation and being mistreated by people who suppose to provide service for you

First time visiting Honolulu and it was amazing all thanks to Bree at the Polynesian Hostel. She went above and beyond to make my stay go smoothly and made sure to check in on all guests during their stay! She was extremely knowledgeable and helpful on guiding us on things to do in the area. She even went out of her way on her off day to show me around! She truly showed her dedication to carrying out excellent customer service! As a solo traveler I felt very safe in this hostel. Would definitely stay at the Polynesian Beach Club again!

Long check in process that includes an app download, in person ID, gate code, online form - excessive. The staff are super friendly though. The sheer and towel are clean. The bed bunks suck and need upgrading - super flimsy and squeaky. The bathroom isn't bad but there is only one for 8 people and if the door isn't left open it gets moldy smelling and bad for your lungs. They have kitchen with storage and small common space. Easy to walk to bars, clubs, beach, park and shopping. Excellent location.

Just not a good experience. Check in was okay. Also somebody slept in the bathroom and the staff didn't really care so I had no shower or bathroom to use. And then disappeared. I had a better night just sleeping on the beach.

Location is great, rooms were what you would expect for the price (cheap and not well maintained) and the staff was hit or miss. Some were very helpful and friendly, while a couple need refreshers in customer service. It seems parking scooters inside the gate is welcome, but motorcycles were frowned up by the two rude employees. One complained about the exhaust when I was outside the gate getting ready to leave for the day. If I ever return to Hawaii, I'll pay the extra for a hotel that has a parking garage.

A great place to stay and possibly the cheapest in Honolulu. Extremely convenient for transportation anywhere in the island and very clean and friendly staff. The only thing I would suggest is for them not to recommend their guests to Backpackers Hostel in North Shore, a real filthy place.

Such an amazing place! I was traveling solo and felt completely safe and welcome here. I was able to meet a lot of new people, travelers and staff as well. Bree was especially helpful, she was able to show me around the island and give me recommendations for places to visit! I definitely recommend this place if you’re looking for a unique traveling experience. It is a hostel so you do share common areas, but they are kept very clean! Definitely a good deal for the cost as well, you’re in walking distance of everything!

The hostel is really good. They clean every day everything. The kitchen can be better but if you don’t need a lot is enough for cook. There is a chill area with hammocks. The stuff is nice and they try to help us every moment. If you are travelling alone is not a problem, there is friendly people, is not difficult to make friends and join them with some adventure.

Pros: -Good location (beach and bus stops nearby) -Friendly staff available to answer requests Cons: -Except for the beds, the room is empty: no table, no chair, no privacy curtain, no hooks, no convenient way to put our clothes. -The mattress is uncomfortable and the cleanliness of the room could be improved. -In the common area, all the fridges were out of order, there seemed to be only one option to plug our devices (disappointing since the plugs in the bunk beds were also unreachable from the top beds) -The door of the room was hard to close and needed to be slammed to remain closed, not very quiet. Overall, I guess we get what we paid for and just need to spent as little time as possible in the hostel.

The positives are largely the location and the staff. Right next to the beach and easy check in process. The rooms were horrid. I booked a six-person air conditioned room and what I got was a filthy 8-person dorm without fans or AC. Quiet hours aren’t enforced and there is a TON of noise going on almost constantly (can’t blame the hostel for that, just is what it is). The blanket they give you is just a bedsheet that pairs with the covering you put on yourself. Got very hot very quickly in the room. If you are sensitive to noise or light at all you will not sleep a wink. I stayed for one night and would’ve probably had better luck just sleeping in the car.

It's like a motel converted into a hostel. Rooms were spacious. Clean enough for a hostel at the beach. The dude that checked us in was friendly and it had some nice amenities. It is a little expensive for hostels but that's Hawaii. I'll stay here again before my return flight.

Enjoyed my stay at this Hostel. It is a hostel, so expect to be sharing rooms with strangers. It is on the south side of Waikiki, less than a mile from the big shipping centers, and only a block from the beach. There is a common area with refrigerators, microwave, stove, and implements of cooking in case you want to save some money and cook your own meals. They have surfboard and scuba gear rentals, and they're is a GO->X electric scooter parking spot just outside the hostel. It is also less than a block from several bus stops, and 2 ABC Stores (local convenience store).

I have stayed at many hostels and this is definitely the worst. The location is great, however, it is pretty dirty, the bathroom looks like a frat house, and the people staying here are kinda scary. The fridges are packed and look like they haven’t been cleaned in awhile, and the kitchen is dirty as well. It is in an alley where a man saw I was walking alone then followed me to the gate where I had to slam it shut so he couldn’t get in. If I could cancel without losing my money I would and I would go somewhere else. Would never stay here again. Staff is nice tho.

I was traveling with my brother and we were supposed to be in the dorms but somehow were placed in the private suite, they honored the same dorm price for our entire stay. Shelly is an amazing manager and I saw her constantly trying to accommodate the residents. This is a hostel so you get what you pay for but the service is above and beyond that. They let you take out beach toys for free. The location is fantastic as it's close to the beach, zoo, and everything else in Waikiki. Overall a great place to stay if you're traveling on a budget.

Incredible hospitality and each staff member excels in making you feel as if you’re all on the same team. Whether storing luggage through bounce or staying in one of the clean and comfortable rooms at the hostel, it is all a pure experience flooded with aloha. Team members Christian, Paris and Nina offered exceptional service - guided by a wise and friendly leader in Ann. There was also a plethora of cool, interesting and unique individuals lodging there. Throughout my one nights stay I made many a friend and learned plenty about cultures ranging from Central America, Europe and even more about Australia. To the team - thank you very much for the stay. You went above and beyond!

Stayed here for a week, one night in a dorm style room and six nights in the semi-private twin. The semi-private means you have to walk through the dorm to get there, so if you want an actual private room don’t book that one. I found the beds to be decent, not amazing but perfectly fine to sleep in. What mostly bothered me is that I paid more for the AC dorm room instead of the “budget” dorm room that doesn’t have AC, and my dorm room did not have any air conditioning but two large fans instead. Normally I wouldn’t care, but I paid more for this room so I was expecting some nice cool AC! It was way cleaner than I expected for a hostel which was nice, and the kitchen was decent even if it was a bit messy. The fridges do smell pretty bad though. The best part about this place is the location, literally one block up from the beach and you can easily walk to anything you need. There is also two bus stops within two minutes of walking which was very helpful since Uber costs a lot. Definitely nothing fancy, but if you want a cheap place to stay and won’t be in your room much it’s a great deal for the location it’s in.

Super friendly staff that helped me with everything I needed. I will preface by saying this is my first time in a hostel, but I got the semi private room. When on the bed, you can feel the springs dig into your body. The fan and chair provided were so dirty I didn't even want to touch them (dirt and hair). There was no comforter provided, just a single sheet to go over you when you sleep (was 80 so I was fine). Walls are not so clean and paint is peeling. Bathrooms were decent, just bring your own shampoo/soap.

The room is super dirty, and super smelly. Some staffs were kind, but some of them were so arrogant, and stalked with rolling eyes. Really not friendly at all. and I don’t think they even have cleaning staff. I stayed two hostel in Waikiki. One was Waikiki beachside hostel, one was this, and beachside was 10 time better than this and even cheaper. I don’t know why I paid for 50 dorm for this.

This hostel was okay. Honestly the great staff really makes this place good. The rooms were kinda shabby but ok. The kitchen though is kind of gross here, especially the refrigerator. Overall this place is a great value for the great location. But the amenities and quality is the hostel is average.

It is in the heart of Waikiki. You can't beat the location, especially with access to buses that'll take you all over the island. The lobby/common room and really anything that's not the beds or lockers (refrigerators, tables, and even hammocks) are all on the first floor. It's under a roof but it is ultimately outside. The beds and lockers are pretty much the same as what you'd find anywhere else. Definitely get used to the smell of salt and seawater though.

Wooooow, those beds are TERRIBLE. You can literally feel the metal springs digging into your back. I tried moving to other beds in the same room and they were all bad. If you want to come in feeling great and walk out hunchback, then this is the place for you. The workers are great. Chris and Bree were especially helpful. The place is fairly clean overall and they do shut things down at 10pm which is cool. But if you're looking for a good night sleep, even that won't help. Will stay elsewhere next time.

We had the private room with shared bathroom. Room was simple, acceptable, bad smell of a toilet, slightly dirty bathroom. Noice from the wind all night long. Stuff great. Lots of beach and surf equipment to rent. Towells provided for free of charge. Overall OK for short stay Price/Value.

Amazing place! Staff were so helpful and friendly. The hostel was clean and well suited for our one night stay. The room was basic but for what you are paying for it is great. My only complaint would be the top bunk missing a guard rail! Everything else was perfect! Will be coming back next time I'm in Oahu!

It’s not an overall great experience. The dorm I was assigned to was on the 4th floor of a walk-up. You have to put on your own bedsheets, and instead of an actual blanket, I was simply given an extra sheet. It’s 8 people to 1 bathroom. The bathroom smelled dank and looked terrible. The bathtub needs to be cleaned. The walls and ceilings of dormitory area itself look unfinished. The pillow is extremely flat. I can feel the metal wiring of the mattress when I lay on it. Good thing is that the wifi is actually strong.

Honestly, it was an amazing stay, best hotel staff I've ever had the chance to meet, they actually put the effort on becoming friends with you, so very great for solo travelers. Rooms have all you need, no need for ac with the cold night breeze, has amenities for all your needs, super close to the beach, and close enough to most spots. Overall, the atmosphere the place gives was one of a kind. 🙂

This is a great hostel that is clean and managed well. It ranks up there with the fire house in Austin, green tortoise in San Francisco, etc. The accommodations are decent, clean, blocks from Waikiki beach, and the management is good/cares. If you know what a hostel is and aren't a complainer you'll love this spot

Overall the staff was cold and uninviting. They didn't introduce themselves. They also don't seem to really care much. It was as if I was just passing by. Check in was short. Did you get your email for the gate code and for the room code. They don't show or take anyone to their rooms. They didn't explain any rules or expectations nor did they enforce any mask rule. An email is sent for everything including checkout. The staff limits interaction but seems like covid is an excuse to be lazy. No tours offered except for the names of tour companies. No social atmosphere whatsoever. Everything is left to the guests. Hostel workers are responsible for creating a fun and sociable environment. Only good things are its clean, spacious, quiet, and offer unlimited towels. Again just a bare bones basis a$$ place to stay. Definition of a no frills to the upmost extent.

I had a great time at this hostel but Bree was an absolute standout for this place! She was so warm and welcoming, even taking me to the other side of the island to explore. She absolutely made my trip special and is no doubt an asset to this hostel. The room was clean and Bree and our other roommate were very respectful. I will be back and have already recommended it to friends!!

The location makes this hostel 100% worth it. If you are coming to Hawaii to see Hawaii and not be at a hotel all day, this is a great option. The two negatives I have are: the beds are pretty uncomfortable. My bunk bed in room 303 squeezed very loud any time me or my bunk mate moved at night. Additionally, our bathroom was dingy and could use a deep clean.

Week-long stay awhile ago in a 10-person dorm. Great way to meet some awesome travelers from around the world. Only one bathroom though, be sure to bring earplugs for the inevitable snorers. They offer laundry service for $6 which is convenient. If you rent a car, there's free street parking closeby on Monsarrat Ave.

If you want Waikiki, it is not a bad place. I just wanted a place to crash, do some work for class and explore the island while not losing all my money. I was by myself, so it seemed appropriate. I don't know why people complain about towels. Just ask for one. The rooms were a bit hot. It would be nice of they had a spot to park, but you are unfortately left with city parking, which is awful. Got to meet peeps from all over the world. I would return.

I was stuck without accommodations in Honolulu . I could not stay at original booking . Annie took my call & moved Heaven & Earth to get my stay on the Island covered in a clean & secure place. I was treated with respect & lots of kindness. Chris walked over & got my bags for me from the place I did not stay. I give the Polynesian a top drawer review. They were wonderful. I have stayed before & will stay again. Great place to stay in Waikiki !

Great hostel! Strayed in room 300 for a week and although it got a bit dirty at some point (to be expected with hostels tbh) the beds were clean and actually pretty comfortable, pretty much in a mint condition and the airing of the room was also really good. YMMV depending on your room I suppose! Showers in a room of 10 can get a bit sketchy but I honestly never waited for more than 10 minutes. Also the location can't be beaten. This is such a big deal breaker, you're directly in the middle of Waikiki and litteraly a bloc away from the beach. A better location than that would be in the ocean at this point. Everyone there is also super nice and I met some amazing people, including the staff. Now the amenities aka the kitchen aren't the best, the food shelves and stove are on the outside patio and a little old but I wouldn't really judge the quality of the hostel based on that. It gets pretty noisy in the middle of the night due to the garage truck at 4:45am, bear that in mind. I'm a heavy sleeper so it never really bothered me but I can see why some people would be annoyed. Again, not the top-notch cleanest or the brand newest hostel, but people are super nice, there's all you need there and the location is just unbelievable.

first time in a hostel for my friend and I, rooms had all the essentials and were cleaned daily. Wifi and location were incredible, people were so friendly. Made so many friends here as the environment was awesome. Definitely recommend staying here, people from other hostels in the area were saying they wish they chose this hostel instead.

Quick responses to questions via the Goki app, staff was friendly, central location. Could have been cleaner, I thought the bathroom was pretty dirty. Maybe not so much a critic of the hostel itself but fellow guests: they were lacking basic hostel etiquette. A lady in my room who had showered the night before, took another shower at 3:45am. She was texting with her sound on for the next hour, and flashing her light everywhere as she was getting ready for the day. Very annoying. Another girl was sending voice notes at 6am. And another woman was getting stuff out of the fridge and flashing her lights everywhere at 4:30am. I'm glad I was only here two nights.

I really enjoyed my stay at this hostel, the staff are all very helpful and nice, there are some surf boards for rent and some beach equipment you can use as well. The kitchen I didn't really used but look okay, maybe a little messy. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and beds were comfortable. The whole vibe was good and there was a big range in ages of people staying there. Really good location.

Great location, awesome staff. I had a cancelled flight and a left behind item and the staff were fantastic with helping. Decent wifi. No ac in the dorm but many windows that open which really cools it down but can mean some noise. Plenty of space in the room. Lockers are a decent size. No individual plugs for each bunk, but plenty of plugs around. Great little shelves attached to each bed.

Never done a hostel before, but had a semi-private room. You go through a dorm to get to it and you shared the same bathroom with the dorm, but you had a separate locking door. The semi-private room had a ceiling fan. It's no frills, you get a place to sleep and some towels to take a shower. Bed wasn't the best. Great for people on the go. All the rooms were on the 2nd and 3rd floors, no elevator. My cruise luggage for the remainder of the trip was a bit much. They did have a storage room if you needed a safe place to keep your stuff after check out.

The service was good. People at the office were welcoming, helpful when need and relax. The rooms were clean but nothing charming (it's an hostel). Private bathroom for the dorm is a benefit cons : not a lot of organised activities

Two stars for location and friendly staff and a comfortable mattress. Everything else was pretty rough - my room was extremely dirty. It looked as if the bathroom hadn’t been cleaned in years. There was dried hair everywhere, so much grime in the toilet, even on the toilet seat. Felt pretty uncomfortable. It is super close to the beach and is walkable to everything which was a plus, but for the price, I would never stay here again or recommend it to anyone.

Pros -check in is at 2pm. If you get there early you can leave your luggage with them. -there is an outdoor kitchen, 3 huge refrigerators and in the rooms they each have a refrigerator and a microwave -they have all of your beach necessities: towel, chairs, sun block, floaties, umbrellas, etc. And if you want to go snorkeling or surf boarding they also have the items for these things as well. -everyone that works there is very nice and tries to help with whatever you need -outdoor shower to rinse off from sand -clean bed linen -they offer washing service for a small price -they have small lockers to fit valuable items -they have locks to purchase for $8 if you don’t have your own -conveniently located less than a five minute walk from the beach and many main shops Cons -the ac does not work well I could barely feel it and always felt sweaty -they could do a better job at cleaning the rooms -there’s not enough outlets and from the ones we had one wouldn’t charge. And there’s no outlet in the bathroom -the only mirror was in the bathroom -there is no elevator and I stayed up on the fourth floor so it sucked getting your luggage up and down

You get what you pay for. Very cheap and affordable compared to neighbouring accommodations, and you share with fellow travellers. Not great that you share only one bathroom among 5-6 guests in a room. Lindsey at reception was so kind and helpful, however the other blonde haired woman looked like she hated her job and wasn’t very helpful, I think she was the one who answered the phone before I booked to ask questions, and she sounded very blunt and rude. Prior to booking, I emailed requesting to be in a room by myself as I was travelling solo and didn’t feel safe being in a room with others- I then got a respond back saying that they can “provide this request with no additional charges”. I was happy and looking forward to my stay, but found out when I got there that I’m sharing a room with 5-6 people. It was fine, but I was disappointed that I was told it was possible. Lindsay was very sweet and kind and offered for me to stay in her room. Beds are uncomfortable and pillows are super flat, plastic sheet on bed is loud, and only one light in room- so sharing a room with others, you’d have to enter the room with a flashlight to not wake someone who’s already sleeping. Would be better to have individual lights. Only stairs, which is hard if you have heavy luggage and your room is on the top floor- meaning you drag it up and down 6 flights of stairs. The lane of the location itself is a bit dodgy and I wouldn’t recommend going out after dark if you’re alone and not for that night life. A bit loud if you sleep early as the streets are very lively. Lockers in rooms are handy and good, as well as the digital lock on doors that can be used with phone app. Communal kitchen is cool. Lucky I only stayed overnight as I wouldn’t enjoy staying there any longer, a fellow traveller told me she didn’t sleep well for the whole week she stayed there.

This was my first time staying in a hostel, so I didnt know what to expect. Pros: It's definitely not a 5 star place, but I still liked the homey feel: customers all sit around the tables at meals & in the evenings and visit. There is a small tv in the kitchen area. They provide lots of free floating devices, flippers, masks & snorkels to borrow. Plus they have surfboards for rent. There is a fully stocked communal kitchen: 3 fridges to store your food (they were all fairly stuffed), pots/pans, silverware, plates, microwave, stove/oven, blender, coffee maker, toaster, grill, etc. Kitchen is outside in a covered area with tables & chairs, & hammocks. The hostel is in a great location, with tons of nearby food places, shops, rentals, and especially the beach (5-7 minute walk away). They provide an endless supply of towels, which they wash & fold on-site. They can also do a load of your laundry for you for $6: convenient. Nice office staff, always very helpful. Facility has a locked gate. Cons: the rooms need upkeep & maintenance done: paint, holes repaired, sinks dripping, broken outlets, no remote for the ceiling fan, etc, but it wasnt anything that affected my stay a whole lot. Rooms are stuffy even with fans (no A/C). Dorm rooms are small and very bare: no closets, no dressers, & very small lockers; the semi private room has nothing in it, just a chair. You must be ok bunking in the same dorm room as the opposite sex. There were originally 4 men in the dorm (that changed frequently), while I had the private room. I had to walk through the dorm every time to get to my room. All 5 of us shared a small bathroom, one toilet. They do not have irons or blow dryers, or even blankets. No elevator despite 4 stories, and there arent any rooms on the ground floor. Still, I wasn't in my room much; just needed a place to sleep, so the price was right. Customers were all very friendly and we were all happy to be there. I stayed 8 nights for $757, which I booked 4-5 months in advance.
