This was my first experience staying at a Hostel, and this is exactly what I am looking for. Unlike my younger peers, I was looking for a quieter place to be able to relax at a beautiful and peaceful neighborhood. If you are like me, this is the right place. The hosts, Auntie Sue, Auntie Joana and Uncle Paul were all wonderful people who work hard to accommodate everyone and keep the place nice and clean. Definitely have the Aloha Spirit! I met all kinds of friendly folks whom I made many good memories with. A++!

READ BEFORE YOU BOOK this hostel is a quiet, limited social hostel. It is tightly managed and designed to be a place for quiet, peaceful coliving. As I am use to other Hostel International locations and was seeking social experiences and to meet others, this hostel wasn't my favorite in Honolulu. But it does have some redeeming traits. Some things that I was not bit in were the limited access to the kitchen (closes at 11p), no alcoholic beverages allowed here (including beer), and no talking in the one common area which is the patio after 11p. The hostel is located in a residential area by the university so you might hear college students partying some nights, but the managers of the location are very strict about the rules and limited noise and mess as well. They are interesting people which I like. Overall, I liked that the hostel was very clean and by time for bed (well before that time even) it was quiet for sleep, but it does severely lack a social environment/component because of all the rules - which is the best part about staying at a hostel. I recommend a stay closer to Waikiki if looking for social life. And stay here if you just want a bit more solitude and peace. Not to say you can't spark up a conversation and make a new friend, but by 11pm you'll have to go to the street to have a conversation with them - literally. Note: the check in/out process is strict and a but lengthy as well so be prepared if you have just been traveling for 6,8,12+ hours. Also the place can be a bit hard to find as it is tucked behind another building so walk the street, follow Google Maps, and look for the triangle symbol.

The hostel itself was actually nice. It's a very simple place and small area, but it's relaxed, clean, with a nice patio, and the other guests were also nice and friendly. The only thing I have to complain, unfortunetly, and which made my stay quite uncomfortable is the owner of the hostel, who normally does the check in. Since the first time I spoke to her on the phone, she was talking in a rude and arrogant way. I thought it was maybe just cause she was not in a good mood that day, but when I arrived at the hostel to do the check-in, she was still behaving in an arrogant and rude way, as if she was annoyed at you for no reason at all which made me feel really uncomfortable and unwelcomed. On the other hand, her sister who also manages the place was really nice and friendly and made me feel welcomed. Apart from that, I have nothing to complain about the hostel itself..it's a nice little hostel. But if you're looking to party and stuff then this is not the right hostel for you. Also keep in mind that they only accept cash as payment. And it's located in downtown..so you'll have to take a bus everytime you wanna go to downtown Waikiki.

The place is run by two super nice sisters. It is spotlessly clean and although not in the fanciest part of town, still has a great vibe and makes for a quiet nights sleep, which is important in a place where you typically have all the windows open at night.

This family run hostel has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. It felt more like we had been invited to stay in our lovely hosts' home rather than having rented a room. All of the facilities were very clean and the staff were helpful in giving us lots of recommendations about what to do on Oahu. As hostels go it wasn't exactly cheap, but that is Hawaii for you. Overall had a great time but one minor criticism would be the lack of curtains which made for early wake ups.

This is a great no-thrills spot whether you're passing through or staying a bit. It's a small operation run by a hardworking family, so I recommend calling them directly to book room. Locked dooms with clean beds, lockers and a shared bathroom. There is parking available at the hostel and on the street which was nice for so close to downtown.

Sue and her family were so welcoming to me. This is an established, family operated hostel. There is coin op laundry. A collective kitchen- please label your things, use them, and throw out garbage! I stayed in February, which is the rainy season in this area! Be warned! Just outside you can see diamondback crater. The University at Hawaii astronomy campus is close. There is a7 Eleven about a quarter mile down the road. Beyond that is the city and Waikiki areas. The beach is 10 minutes away, 30 on foot. There is a common area outside where you can meet new, exciting people. Generally, the age was about 25-45 while I was there. Many different countries were represented and it was very pleasant. As it can be as a solo traveler!! You know what I'm talking about!! There is a roster that has apparently been plaguing this block for a while. I tried to cage it, yet I was on vacation so that was not priority!! Overall, a great, reasonably priced hostel. There are lockets and the staff is very attuned to those staying, those who are not, and access to the rooms. The main door code changes every day, which helps us stay in touch with the owners. After an initial meet-up, They're welcoming, warm, and willing to share knowledge on the area!!

This was my first time staying at a hostel and Hostelling International Honolulu and Sue made it such an amazing stay, even for only being there for one night before my flight to Australia. The Hostel is extremely clean and cozy. Everyone I met were very friendly and from all over! I wish I could have spent more time here! Thank you!

Absolutely loved my stay here. They were very warm and welcoming, and the hostel was clean and enjoyable. A nice patio area to sit outside, nice relaxing beds, an overall excellent hostel experience. 💖 Just bring cash! Or go for a short stroll to the nearby atm at 7/11

Great clean place! The staff is very friendly. My only negative is that the staff is so friendly that there are transients who prey upon the generosity of the staff and end up out staying their allotted time which turns into spying upon short-term guests and steal their items when they are not there. It sucks, because when you arrive to see these people, and all they have is just a duffle bag of their belongings--including out dated phones and laptops--you know your belongings won't be safe. Thus, you end up not resting because you have to constantly watch your things around them. They all have great smiles and a story to tell, but you know the leaching of food and other things will soon start as it did for me. Other than my earbuds being acquired by someone, the space is clean and staff is nice.

As of Dec 2022. I got complex feeling about this cute ( at least used to be) HI in HI, stayed a week here 8 yrs ago when still a student. However, this time, post pandemic economy def changed the scene. 1. Can’t book via HI official website, could only call to reserve, which is by cash $50 per night. Only until talking with other roommates, knowing that you can still book via other 3rd party website various prices — interesting; 2. There is a huge construction site ( by the university) right next to the hostel, Mon to Sat, 650am till 530pm ish non stop noises ( still I never saw such a great hard working construction ethics in mainland USA) no idea when the project gonna be over tho; 3. For male guests, do notice that the kitchen, patio and check-in office is attached/next to men’s house. So do expect late check-ins, loud chat and lols until 11pm ( especially Room 3) 4. Again, men’s house, the flushing of toilet sound is the loudest you will ever experience… better than your phone alarm, either late in the middle of night or early morning, trust me…. All in all, I admire Su and her sister keep running this spot for so long. If you are a light sleeper or can’t deal with noises, this maybe not a good spot, at least for now.

Simply the best, cheapest and cleanest hostel to stay at when traveling to O'ahu. Great bus service to downtown Honolulu or Waikiki and a relaxing patio to socialize with other travelers. The hostel is run by Sue, Paul and Joanna, three wonderful hosts to which you can ask all your questions. I thoroughly enjoyed my 22 days stay here and would gladly come back again! To Sue, Paul and Joanna, THANKS!!

Quiet, clean, comfortable and safe. Highly recommend to rest far from the hustle and bustle. Easily accessible by public transport and reasonable walking distance from many good food options (less than 15 min walk). Good place to stay at a very cheap price for Hawaii.

The hostel is a bit outside the busy areas of Honolulu but still pretty close to Waikiki and a couple of dining options. It's really small, having maybe 5 rooms and a really diverse crowd of visitors across all ages. The rooms are clean and comfortable. Honorable mentions: Sue is the funniest person!!!!

Had a wonder experience. The staff. Esp. Mrs sue are so sweet! The people for the most part are travelers and not home bums. The rooms are clean. Great atmosphere. If thinking sharing a dorm isn't worth the saved money think again. They meet with "talk story" new guest to make sure they are decent humans. 12/10 would stay again.

Best Hostel In Hawai’i especially for women because its quiet and super safe. The beds are comfortable and you’re away from the madness of Waikiki. I’ve stayed at all the hostels in Hawai’i and this one is the most comfortable and cleanest hostel too. It will be worth every penny. A Hui Hou 🤙🏽

Aloha I never stayed here, but my friend did and asked me to share my experience too. She stayed there a month ago and had the best stay thanks to Joana Paul and another lady. I used to be the Manager at The Beach Waikiki Hostel and whenever we were overbooked to the extent I used to refer the guests to this hostel. Everyone had the best time they informed them they didn't have any complaints and highlighted about the place being very clean without any electrical issues or issues with showers like they experienced before in other hostels. Honestly your reputation has been great without too much marketing, my respects! Thanks for taking care of my friends they had a better experience and the 5 of them will go back for sure ! Nice stay for one night, price is good considering it's in Honolulu. Staff was friendly, although I think the staff could add some "youth" to the team, didn't have the typical backpacker vibe. Strange too, there's really no plates or utensils in the kitchen for geusts to use? Good place nonetheless

Excellent place to stay for a affordable price. Doesn’t accept cards at all. Excellent & super friendly owners/staff. Nice quiet area and on every bus route you need to get around. Would recommend to anyone over & over!!

Sue, Joanna and Paul are so welcoming and always have an interesting piece of local knowledge or joke when you pass them in the hostel. The rooms are great, facilities clean and it is located close to Waikiki and Diamond Head. The nearby bus stops will connect you to any landmarks you wish to see. Highly recommend for future travellers. Mahaolo from Ireland!

Staff are a little eccentric. The place is a little old, but clean for the most part. Worst part was the rooms are on the second floor where it is very hot and humid. No AC or fans in the room. The air is stale and humid. I was sweating like crazy in the room before I even went to bed.

Inspired by how hard-working the staff at this family-run hostel were. They did an excellent job keeping the hostel neat and clean. The only major issue that I encountered while staying here was that the on site laundry machine had broken down and thusly I had to take kind of a long walk down the road to a nearby laundromat. However, I'm assuming that the hostel will take care of this issue soon and therefore should not affect you during your stay.

This was my first time staying in a hostel and I had a great experience. The rooms and bathrooms were kept clean, the building was secure, and the staff was helpful. Would definitely come back

Sue and Joanna were so hospitable and the Hostel was so very nice and clean with so many different quaint areas on the premises to escape and be alone. I read the history of the place it was started by Sue and Joanna's parents to supply reasonable housing for travelers. I loved staying there and hope that I am welcome to come back and stay again in the future. A very nice business to pass down to the grandkids.

Very clean and quiet...a good place to stay if you are out all day at the beach or sightseeing and hardly in your room. No restaurant here! A kitchen to cook in and they provide you dishes and pans to cook with. Don't stay here if you expect any regular conveniences. Just basic stuff here. Shared bathrooms...separate rooms for male and female unless you're a couple then you can share a room

I've been hostelling for 4 decades now. This beautiful place was homey and welcoming--great location for food, coffee and transit choices. Met some interesting people, as is normal for hostelling, and the community kitchen was well stocked. It can be hard for some to sleep communally, but when you're worn out from hiking through a subtropical clime all day you'll be grateful for a clean bed! Got some great advice back in 2019 at this place for snoring remedies. ;+)

I really enjoyed my stay here! This is a family owned hostel, so if you’re looking for a party hostel I would look closer to downtown Waikiki. Sue and Joanna are really nice and accommodating, and despite limited office hours are pretty responsive if you need help during the day. Hostel is pretty cleanly but there is no AC so it gets pretty stuffy during the day. The hostel is also right next to a couple of buses that take you to downtown Honolulu or Waikiki, and there’s also room for a moped or car if you rent one of those. Overall highly recommended!

The hosts, Sue and Joanna, were very welcoming and personable! They made sure I had everything I needed and felt comfortable. I felt very safe and everything was clean and organized. We each got a cubby with our own dishes in the kitchen so that everything could stay sanitary. This was a perfect place in a safe neighborhood, not far away from Waikiki but removed enough that we could sleep well in a quiet area! I definitely will come back next time I'm on the island and would recommend it to anyone!

Had a really good stay here, clean, quiet and very friendly and helpful staff. Good hostel if you want to explore the city or go on a hike and come back for sleeping. No restaurants/stores nearby but there’s a kitchen and a good bus connections to many places in Honolulu!
