This one is kind of weird. It's very cool and feels like it should be a bigger attraction, but the parking and site are hidden behind a YMCA with no signage. I don't know if that's intentional to keep tourist traffic down, but a huge site like this with some pretty interesting history should be a little more popular. Beautiful view with a nice trail running through some marsh land.

Very cool to see this bit of ancient Hawaiian heritage and culture. If arriving here via the Shaka app, be aware that you can’t drive in like the app suggests. You’ll need to park at the YMCA but it’s a very short walk.

Beautiful and Majestic. Came here for my daughter's school field trip to learn about the Kailua community that they live and learn in. It is one of those places where you get to see, learn, and study Hawaiian History and Mythology. Our culture and past is very precious to us Kanaka Maoli, if you are planning to visit here, please come with respect, and keep it clean. The Windward YMCA staff and faculty is also the caretakers along with Hawaii DLNR so if you have any questions please contact/speak with them.

There’s an intriguing piece of history a couple of minutes from downtown Kailua at this imposing temple site. Going back as far as the 15th century, the Kailua area was a base of power for the entire island, thanks to its irrigated fields for crops like banana and taro, abundant supply of pond fish like mullet and safe canoe landings. Kamehameha I for instance lived in Kailua after conquering the island in 1795. The Ulupō Heiau State Historic Site attests to this importance, with a platform measuring roughly 42 metres by 55 metres, and with a height of more than 9 metres. The stone for this structure was brought from as far as Kualoa, 10 miles up the windward coast.

Sacred to the Hawaiians. Not an easy place to access. You either have to park somewhere in the main road and walk down the trail or park at the YMCA. The site is within a residential community.

This is not a tourist attraction. This is a cultural and historical site and should be treated as such. Heiau are sacred sites used in antiquity to pay homage and honor our akua- that which gives us life. Sites of prayer and worship. The surrounding lands were fertile and used to cultivate lo'i kalo, and i'a (fish), able to sustain the entire community. Kawainui is a protected wetland, and nesting ground to native birds.

History: "Construction of this religious Center, one of the largest remaining in Oahu, is attributed to the mythical Menehune people, who did their building by passing stones from one hand to hand over long distances. The stones which averaged 1 and 1/2 feet in size, were piled at about an 45 degree angle to create the sides of this large open Terrace (140 feet wide and 30 feet high). All the walkways have been built over portions of this area and is circular wall no longer remains, this site is well preserved with some interior features still visible in the central Southern portion."

Very nice area, but got locked behind the gate on Saturday. Someone said they come by and lock the gate at 5:30pm, but there aren’t any signs to say so. The YMCA staff also didn’t have a number to call. Park in the YMCA lot if you think you’ll still be there anywhere close to 5:30pm.

Ulupō Heiau on the eastern edge of Kawai Nui Marsh in Kailua, Hawaiʻi, is an ancient site associated in legend with the menehune, but later with high chiefs of Oʻahu, such as Kakuhihewa in the 15th century and Kualiʻi in the late 17th century. It may have reached the peak of its importance in 1750, before being abandoned after Oʻahu was conquered in the 1780s. The site became a territorial park in 1954。

Kindergarten even though it's a heiau? nursery school? I can't calm down because it's in front of It's not a place you can stay for long I know it's a sacred place, but I think it's enough to go once. It said that the entrance was only open in the morning. I put it separately. I wonder if it was written for kindergarten? I do not know it

A local showed me this place. Very interesting, but still a restoration work in progress, They need better signage to tell the story. Not a typical touristy place. This is a place for people interested in the way things were.

Everything you can expect in a Hawaiian luau however really should invest some money in their stage because it looks like something from a Junior High Public School auditorium stage in a relatively poor District. But the show is professional and unparalleled. Vegetarian dishes are available if you ask, some cheap seats are better than expensive ones

What an interesting place. It's so beautiful and peaceful. It's a little confusing to get there, but once you're there, make sure to take the path around to the right and go down and take it all in from the side and bottom. I was told that they have been doing a lot of clean-up and making it even more beautiful place.

An inspiring cultural treasure! Get out and walk around the garden area on the mauka side. There are a number of narrow foot paths you can take to be able to see some local flora and taro patches, etc. Really a pretty and peaceful area.

Came across this cool Hawaiian temple ruin through the Shaka Guy app. I learned something new and the ruins were cool. Not easy to find, walk the road next to the YMCA. It's a quick stop.

National cultural and historical site. Small, there is not much walking, just one hill. It's impressive to imagine what was once there. Sad it is so destroyed. There is a plaque, but read about it before you go.

Locals call this place the pyramid. Tucked away but in plain sight, this 1000 year old structure stands as a remnant of the farming culture that prevailed in this area. A spring flows from this site and was a main source of drinking water and used for their agriculture.

Very nice and shady, cool area, you can walk around the heuau on a small trail and see a lot of native plants and a beautiful steam that goes through. This also has a I formation plaque that gives you some history. One of the very few left on this island.
