So many people volunteer to protect and maintain this marsh. It is beautiful. And I wish we had more time to visit again. There are lots of endangered birds that can be seen here. We also spotted some feral pigs playing in the grass.

The main reason we come to this park is to walk the walking trail. It’s so easy for the children to ride bikes or be pushed in a stroller. The trail is paved with a wall on one side and marsh on the other. Pretty views and easy to get to. Totally worth it if you are looking to just get out of the House. Turn at stop light on Kawainui and drive through neighborhood until you see the small parking lot. Once parked walk in the opposite direction of the soccer fields. You will walk through a little garden of flowers and bushes and curve to the left and that’s the start of it. 2 mile trail.

Personally I hate it and here's why. At one end of the marsh is the only sanctioned model airplane field. They're isn't even a runway and on three sides is the marsh. Even a good pilot can have failure with his plans whether it's electrical or otherwise. But the marsh is home to many airplane models and at the average price of an airplane being around $180 that makes it a very expensive hobby. The Buffalo grass around the field can grow over 7'and can get overwhelming when trying to find your lost aircraft.

Rated as the largest swamp or marsh land in the Hawaiian Islands the Ulu Po Heiau and Hauwahine Heiau are of such cultural significance that l would not recommend this place if you are not in a certain frame of mind. The marsh was a major food source for the people of that time enabling them to multiple like the tourist of today. Legend speaks of the female Mo'o or Mermaids that once protected this marsh land. Its is in the process of voluntary restoration by many of the schools on Oahu. If you do go be respectful of the people and land.

A great place to get back in touch with nature. An easy stroll along the marsh offers scenic views of the Koolau mountains and many types of water birds. The trail is paved and flat with no elevation gain so it's perfect for beginners and parents with strollers to bring along the keiki. There's a good sized parking lot and easy access to the trail. My only criticism and reason for the four stars is there's no permanent bathrooms, just two portapotties. At the start of the trail there's a garden with native plants with accompanying descriptive signage. Best times to go are early mornings or early evenings as there's no tree cover so it can get hot. Bring along some bread to feed the ducks and fishes and your all set to go! Have fun!

It’s a nice nature walk. Flat ground the whole way makes for easy walking, but there’s also no shade at all so bring a hat and water. It’s great seeing all of the marsh wildlife.

Nice trail that takes you out of the town and you're able to enjoy the landscape. Views are awesome! Definitely great for walkers, runners, strollers or bikes. There's some occasional wildlife that can be seen too. Don't let kids run off too much, wild boar have been spotted there too. There's a parking lot at the beginning of the trail, a picnic table and porta potty too.

The model airfield was quiet this afternoon. The wind was almost non existent which is rare. Finally the grass has been cut, it's a bummer when you land your plane and have to clean off all the grass.

Kawainui Regional Park is a location untouched by development. It's one of the few places where you could walk and/or bike along the access emergency road way, and enjoy the serenity of nature. Everyone should try it at least once while you're in Kailua town. If you do, be sure to take some sun screen and a bottle of water for the trek!

Awesome walking trail with tons to see. It's bike, kid, elderly, baby, stroller, dog, pretty much anything friendly. Plenty of birds and turtles if you look. It can get a little warm so bring plenty of water and sunscreen or shade if you need it. There is a water fountain in the parking lot, and I suggest soaking your dog before going down the path.

    Easy walk paved entire way

  • 5/5 Lisa K. 9 years ago on Google
Awesome trail to run, the smell is not too bad, plus the run is straight ways. It is a 2.75 mile run both ways and its 25 minute one way, 25 minute coming back; at my speed that is? There's other more advanced joggers that needs speeding ticket though; as they fly by me! ( L.O. L. ) Overall, the marsh provides an refreshing experience...
