If you only have the time for one museum while in Cologne, this is the one. I find it to be one of the world's leading museums for modern and contemporary art. At this time, early 2024, there are a couple of most interesting separate exhibitions advertised on the walls of the building. The art works are perfectly curated, the light is rewarding and the selection of what is on display very educational. Take a look at our photos, they say more than a thousand words...

The size of the museum and the number of exhibits really make this place shine. You can easily spend 5+ hours here being moderately thorough and still have plenty to see for a return visit. The building itself is quite elegant, and is located on an Island with scenic river views on both sides. Many of the older exhibits are in German only, but most have English translations. There is plenty to see for adults, and plenty of run-around interactive science exhibits for kids. Interactive exhibits are clearly marked on the map, allowing for easier planning for parents.

Quite a fun and interesting museum. It has a rather large Picasso section, along with inherent rotating collections. When we visited they had a photography exhibit for migrations, specially the Turkish migrants. A wonderful museum to visit when in Köln and a must when visiting. Takes at least 1.5 hours to do a quick walk through, more if you really want to digest everything.

Although I’m not a huge fan of modern art, I enjoyed this place so much. A lot of themes you can enjoy, especially I loved the “In Situ” temporary exhibition!

Since 1994 the Friends of the Museum Ludwig have honoured each year an international artist with the ‘Wolfgang Hahn Prize’, presented during the city's art fair Art Cologne. Both the annual highlight of the Friends' activities and one of the cultural features of Cologne and the Rhineland, this purchase prize is dedicated to the memory of Wolfgang Hahn 1924–1987 chief conservator and painting restorer at Wallraf Richartz Museum / Museum Ludwig and one of Cologne's most far-sighted collectors. The budget for the prize amounts to a maximum of 100,000 euros per annum. The museum also acquires a work from each prizewinner. The building is also home to the Kölner Philharmonic. The Heinrich-Böll-Platz, a public square designed by Dani Karavan, is above the concert hall at the north-east of the building. Unfortunately, during concerts people can't walk upon the square as it creates acoustic disturbances for the concert goers below. In 2016 the museum joined forces with the Bell Art Center to organize an unofficial retrospective of Anselm Kiefer, which opened at Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Arts. The last stop on the tour in China was to be the new Jupiter Museum of Art in Shenzhen, but a delayed museum opening caused the works to be put into storage. At this point the museum lost track of the pieces and began to search for them. In January 2020 they finally located the pieces in a warehouse in Shenzhen and attempted to retrieve the piece. They were stopped, however, by Chinese authorities. Diplomatic action has been undertaken by the German Government, the City of Koblenz, and Kiefer himself, to secure the return of the pieces, which include the monumental work Pasiphae.

One of Cologne’s gems for sure! Loved everything about my visit at the museum. I was also pleasantly surprised by the Naguchi exhibition that we managed to explore. I felt truly moved by his art. 💫

This is by far the best science museum I have ever visited. This museum needs at least one full day to be able to fully digest the massive information out there. It's 6 floors and each floor dedicated to one topic, ranging from environment, mechanical and electrical power to nuclear energy and astronomy, they even have lab for nanotechnology. The display and digitization of the museum are really amazing. The shop also is good one bu very expensive. I really enjoyed the visit and hope to come back one day!

This museum must have been a huge achievement 30 years ago. Unfortunately it really doesn’t keep up with the times, which is ironical for a technology museum. The entry costs 14E which can be explained only by the space covered but not the entertaining or easiness to navigate factor. Much of the info is outdated and is presented like in a school book (no video, no way to connect to the visitors), everything in German only almost

A nice surprise of a museum in Cologne. Great collection of various modern art pieces well worth a visit. Three floors of art in a great space next to the Cathedral. Consider a museum pass if you plan to visit here and another couple museums.

It is worth a visit. Everytime occurs an interesting event or a gathering of art pieces. A small shop also available for buying some gifts or informative stuffs. There is also locker place for keeping valuable things inside. The staff are welcoming and kind. Access from both side of the building is possible.

An incredible Art gallery. We are huge fans of 20th century art of all kinds so thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Warhol, Lichtenstein, Rothko, Macke, Picasso, Delaunay, Mondrian, Braque, the list goes on. Amazing building as well. Only 12 Euro entry, and free lockers. Plenty of good toilets. Good gift and bookshop.

If you love art, you must come to this place. It's just next to the Dom and the Cologne Central Station. Watching all the works here takes about 3 hours (special exhibition included). You can deeply feel the emotion behind these works even if you don't know the artists. After leaving, you can go to the riverbank and also take cruises & boat tours, that would be a wonderful day.

Really enjoyed the exhibition. Lots of work from German artists, allowing you to learn about the origins of various art movements and German history alongside it! Not overly fussed about Picasso, but so many interesting works from a multitude of artists, as well as a few areas to make your own art.

I can say it was the best modern art museum in Cologne to visit. It has a various number of pieces of art from different well-known artists like Picasso. There's also a pop art unit which is showcasing advertisements which I personally found really interesting. In general I can say it's a must-see in Cologne especially if you're interested in Modern Art.

(Translated by Google) I went twice. Those who specialize in engineering should go. It will take a day. We guarantee that the beer will be good after you see it. What's interesting is that there are many German-made fighters from World War II on display. Even though it is a defeated country. I still feel racial discrimination. Germany is the country of American grandpas, so exhibitions are allowed. Also a twin-engine jet fighter. A full-scale model (?) Of V2 and a flight control device are also proudly exhibited. It contrasts the turbines before the invention of the Laval nozzle with the Draval turbine. If you walk about 200m from Isator, which is the closest to the S-Bahn, to Schleisheim, you will find the aviation museum in the annex. It's reckless to see both in one day. Beer is the extra time allocated for 2 days. The hotel near the east station is recommended. There are many Russian-made aircraft here. I forgot whether it was Sukhoi or MiG, but it was impressive that the exodermis was wavy and the finish was bad. This is in contrast to the recent Airbus wings that are slippery. There is a car annex in the city. It's getting narrower.

Excellent collection and stellar curation; keeping the Haubrich collection together in one place was fascinating. Pop art collection was surprisingly big, highly recommend "Portable War Memorial" as featured in a lot of the pictures on here. There's an exhibition on 20th Century Ukranian art at the moment which was also cool, very good recontextualisation of artists thought of as "Russian", and some cool illustrations made for Ukranian theatre.

Underwhelmed, it was ok as a historical time capsule of modern art but it was annoying in that a lot of the exhibits, while they were shocking in their day were frankly embarrassing /boring or just plain annoying. Case in point, a piece of toast, 3 pencils etc. The Picasso's were plentiful but not very representative or his best work. The highlight was the Rothko, Blue, which is breathtakingly beautiful and has to be seen to feel the incredible power and luminosity of the piece. It's transports you to a higher plane and leaves some part of you changed.

Not to mention, there is an outside terrace that offers a beautiful view of the Cathedral

Great collection of art. The amount of different styles was amazing.... My personal favorite piece was a painting by Salvador Dali, sadly i do not remember the paintings name. Even if there were some questionable pieces of art, such as the wheel on a stool, i would say there is something foe everyone to see. The feelings of the paintings were greatly displayed and very nicely described. Something i would recommend for this museum is that you book a tour. The tour guides are very polite and can really make you connect with the paintings you view.

For a quick night in Frankfurt, I really wanted some German food and the street my hotel was close to had an amazing amount of restaurants, but none that were German. Museum Ludwig is a museum you should never miss in your visit to Cologne, a giant museum full of contemporary and modern delights for the lovers of those both artistic periods of the art. My recommendation is to book a day in your calendar for a walk from Heumarkt Banhof to the cathedral Square, and visit the Cathedral, the Roman Museum and afterwards the Ludwig just a couple minutes away, complement eating at one of the many restaurants near, including very well known Braueries and cafés.

Maximal unangenehm.

Potężna kolekcja dzieł Picassa ( trzecia w skali światowej) , ogromna kolekcja Pop Art ( największa poza granicami USA m.in: Warhol, Lichtenstein). Prawdziwa uczta. Ogrom zgromadzonych prac najwybitniejszych twórcow robi wrażenie. Trzeba zarezerwować sporo czasu na zwiedzanie - 8 tys m2 powierzchni. Słów kilka o nazwie Muzeum - powstało ono 5 lutego 1976 roku z inicjatywy Irene i Petera Ludwig, którzy podarowali 350 prac sztuki nowoczesnej, natomiast miasto Kolonia zobowiązało się stworzyć Muzeum Ludwig, w którym miały znaleźć się wszystkie dzieła sztuki miasta Kolonii powstałe po 1900 roku.

(Translated by Google) Too much of everything. Many people will probably contradict me, but it was a mess for me. The didactic routing is a disaster. Why? Because there aren't any. If you cannot take part in a tour, you are lost. The audio guide is not a guide but a description of the pictures / artist. Maybe you can add something here and guide the visitor on this path if a graphic guidance system is not desired. All in all, so many works / works are exhibited that in the end you don't even know what wonderful things you have seen. At the time, I missed the omnipresent graffiti artists whose short-lived works and tags can be remarkable because they have an impact on everyday life and thus our culture.

The most interesting moment for me was collection of creations made by Pablo Picasso. Museum Ludwig, located in Cologne, Germany, houses a collection of modern art. It includes works from Pop Art, Abstract and Surrealism, and has one of the largest Picasso collections in Europe. You can easily spend 3-4 hours on any rainy or cold day here. It’s definitely a great place if you are here with kids but also a nice place for adults. Don’t miss the maritime exhibition, Oceanography and the mining part which is your -1 floor. There is now a special exhibition on nano technology. Please note that now it’s recommended that you book your tickets prior to visitation on that day due to Covid preventive measures. This is a place where there is something interesting for every age. I would only like to point out that if you suffer from anxiety because of wearing masks for longer time avoid the mining area, you will feel there is less oxygen to breathe there.

You should plan in almost a full day. The electrical shows are particularly interesting for children and adults. Tip: keep your ears shut when the current meets. :) Otherwise, the astronomy area is super interesting and the underground mine, which you have to go through completely to get out again (approx. 30 min) When it comes to sharing, the explanations are not particularly child-friendly and we couldn't find a “shortcut” at the mine because it took too long at the end. Hence 4/5 stars. (Translated by Google) We were there in January 2020 and spent an absolutely exciting day. The overall exhibition is so large that you should choose your favorites at the beginning in order to have enough time for them. I found the high-voltage experiments particularly interesting, which show phenomena which are otherwise invisible. The huge rocket, which you were even allowed to enter, was also impressive.

Overwhelmed with their collections. 10000 times worth the visit even only for the permanent collections. Has various Picasso pieces 👍🏻

Maybe avoid visiting with children. Even though the collection is lovely, my child had accidentally stepped on a white area platform (not touching any work of art or anything), and we got screamed at. And when I say screamed I mean roared at. In high pitch. By the museum staff. We've been told to hold our children's hands at all times and stick to the cleared paths and keep a good distance from artwork. Not the most pleasant experience.

Whenever you need to be in Cologne, then it's absolutely worth visiting this museum. Nice collection and a large variety of great masters... from Picasso and Modigliani to Donald Judd to Gerhard Richter ... but also Rothko, Delaunay, Buren, Lewitt and not to forget a magnificent Dali ...

Good displays and well run. Thin collection. You can see some Picasso and Kandinsky. Wonderful collection of photos of migrants to Germany.

Great museum. The art here is really not my taste, however, I’m sure some art guru will find more value in the art than I did. I’d still recommend this museum to others.

The Museum Ludwig is a must see for everyone who loves modern art. Additionally, currently a must see for Picasso lovers who want to get grip on the broader context of Picasso's work. Yes the architecture of the building makes the building hard to read, but it opens also the opportunity to discover the artwork on your own pace.

Very interesting. I especially liked the pop art section, it's very bright, colourful and choice of displayed pieces is very good. A pity we can't take pictures, even without flash, and that we're obliged to keep our bags, even if very small ones, on the lockers at the entrance. Also, I think they should have a senior discount, as other museums and tourist attractions often do. Appart from that, we had a great time there.

The collection is quite large with a decent variety in styles so your bound to find some pieces you like, spent 2 1/2 hours there and still hadn't managed to see everything. The "Labs" I thought were fun (designed really for younger audiences but I found it quite engaging non the less).

Awesome collection of modern art - a range of mediums, genres, and eras. A neat collection of Picasso's work but really just about everything here was worth admiration. Not a stuffy as more traditional galleries in Europe! Worth probably 2-3 hours at least!

My place to connect with myself through art . I recommend top floor first, save your brain to surrealism and enjoy.

The museum Ludwig offers an exquisite selection of fine art from the 20th century. Spectacular art pieces and paintings from Roy Liechtenstein, Pablo Picasso, Bacon, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol, Dali etc. If you like modern art this museum is a must. It’s worth wile. Highly recommended.

Giant white painted exhibition space. There were a lot of guards everywhere, and alarms going off when people crossed the black painted lines by mistake. A great place as long as you follow the rules. Watch it for the 2EUR locker charge. They don't tell you about that one in advance.

Probably the best (big) art museum in Germany so far.

  • 5/5 Sorin 8 months ago on Google
This may legitimately be one of my favourite museums I’ve ever seen. The Pop art, surrealism, and abstract portions were incredible with many artists that even someone not well versed in art would recognize. The amount of text to read was never overwhelming but useful to introduce the style of art nearby. I stayed for 2 hours but I could have easily gone for 3-4. The gift shop has many great art books and some are available in English as well.

Had a great time at this huge museum! The Ursula exhibition was fascinating, though I couldn't shake off the uneasy feeling about the fur pieces. Nevertheless, her work is worth exploring. The permanent exhibition, especially on the last floor, pleasantly surprised me. They showcased lesser-known pieces from renowned painters, which became my favorites! 🎨🏛️

Interesting museum dedicated to pop art and modern/postmodern art. Works by Warhol, Picasso and Mondrian, including sculptures and mixed media pieces. No bags allowed in the exhibit area, you will get a locker card with your ticket.

Great museum, and nice offer for evening opening on first Thursday of the month (till 10pm) at a reduced price. We like the exhibition, especially in pop art. Also some amazing pieces of Gerard Richter, Roy Liechtenstein, Yves Klein Ith his signature blue, also a superb piece by David Hockney. Yet, need to admit that we were a bit less overwhelmed by the picasso drawings (would these get the same attention of made by any other artist?), as well as the exhibition on Füsun Onur . That exhibition had some very surprising, childish like parts (the story on Zorba the Greek felt like 6year olds, even when displayed on more than 15 tables in magnificent, grand room with 10m ceilings, that felt as a cathedral, but the works displayed in that room truly did not fit there.

Great museum if you love modern arts, especially abstract and pop-arts paintings.

  • 5/5 Francis U. 4 months ago on Google
Great collection of 20th century art, starting with expressionists (Die Brucke movement) represented through breathtaking collection, going on over symbolism, surrealism all the way to cubism, with a great Picasso collection. Then moving on to 2nd half 20 th century (Rothko, Mondrian and others). And the architecture of the building itself is an artistic gem.

Very interesting and modern museum, with some amazing pieces, from Matisse, Picasso, Warhol, Sonia Delaunay, Klein and others.
