Amazing Museum! The place is very huge, well planned and maintained, so take your time visiting it. Free entrance, so you can always come back once you're more familiar with the German language, but some are translated in English and you can listen to the audio guide. Suited for families with kids, couples, and solo. Recommend if you are visiting Bonn.

Hingehen!

The Museum of the History of the Federal Republic is a modern chronically of post second war Germany. It is a very fascinating place to visit but half way round I felt overloaded with information. It is perhaps better to take a coffee or tea break before you become saturated with information overload. I would recommend this museum it is very well laid out and extremely simulating. But remember to take a break. You can download a free audio guide to your mobile phone. The Museum is free to enter. The cloakroom is free to use. It had a handy cafe with waiter service. Toilets are on the basement floor. A metro station is virtually a minute away from the entrance.

Truly a must see for every German citizen and everyone who is interested in German and recent European history. What is especially captivating is the fact that each part of the exhibition is visually and physically enhanced by original objects and artifacts which are telling a story about their past much better than a simple picture or text. While you can easily spend an entire day here without having seen everything, I’d recommend to split the entire exhibition in at least two visits to better process the vast amounts of information and pictures.

Großes Lob an alle Beteiligten. Top!!!!

Sehr schönes Gesichte Museum in Bonn!

May 2023: An absolutely excellent museum on three floors. And an underground treat too! All FREE. Wonderful run though history in sight and sound. You need the best part of a day. AND a bit of the Berlin wall too. The exhibition of Computer era was fascinating too.

Definitely plan enough time for this visit and register your name online in advance. The entree is free and all the explanations are in German and English. This museum is also suitable for young kids since they have many interactive displays.

As a foreigner, I found the museum quite interesting, but a bit confusing - there is definitely a lack of description in English. Sadly, our friends from the East of Germany got rather upset as they found the presentation and interpretation of the historic events rather 'one-sided'.

The place is very nice with significant historical artefacts, keep in mind the things they have are only since 1945 not earlier, there's a nice shop to buy souvenirs.

I learned so much history about WW2 and German history that I had never heard before. Such an interesting and well put together exhibit. You could spend hours there. If you're not a German speaker, make sure to download Google translate and use the camera feature to translate all the notes on the pictures or you'll miss a lot that even the audio guide doesn't tell you.

Are you looking for an well balanced view of German history after WW2, then visit this museum. But you need enough time and concentration. You will understand political development and live circumstances. But I think it has to rebuild. Youth need other kind of knowledge transfer with more interaction and using digital media. The longe invites for a relaxing break between many books.

amazing museum with an extensive collection of exhibits dating from the end of WW2 to the refugee crisis in 2015. you can borrow an audio guide or use your own phone scanning QR codes for an interactive guide through the museum, and there is an actual robot called Eva offering details about exhibits as well. the admission is free with donations appreciated, and there are a cafe, a reading lounge and a shop on site.

The free entrance Museam that tells how German become today since 1945. Wonderful journey and well planned. There are very informative and have some interactive tools available. However, the English description is not available in small sections, so you would only have audio and narrative at the main theme. Sparklingly clean and family friendly :)

Beautiful and large museum about post-WW2 Germany. Nice exhibitions/collection and good audiotour. Definitely worth a visit if you're interested in history and the troubles to rebuild the country after the war. It entails the social, cultural, economical and political problems. Also good to know, the entry is free.

This is a wonderful and very interesting place. When you go inside the museum, time stops, which is why it is better to go from the moment of opening so that there is enough time for all the halls with eras of history and get the most impressions and feel the history!

A perfect place to learn of Germany's History and really appreciate how hardworking Germans are; stopping at nothing to rebuild their beautiful country. Be prepared for some really emotional moments too.

A fascinating museum about recent German history. Entry is free, and most of the exhibits are labelled in English as well as German. There is also an excellent audioguide available in English on the museum's website. There is a nice café in the building too.

It was a nice place, but for someone who doesn't speak German well, it won't be as enjoyable. For example I enjoyed viewing stuff displayed there, but couldn't understand the story or history behind many things, since it was only written in German. I attached a photo as an example. Good thing is that there is no entrance fee. I also like that there are clean public toilets available.

My interesting museums about German life from 1945 to the present. It has a lot of information about life after the Second World War, the political parties, its history and also pieces of the Berlin Wall ... It is a very emotional visit at certain times.

Wonderful history museum of Germanys recent, post-WWII past, looking primarily at the political situation, but also at other technical developments, such as automobiles and industry. There is also a musical section which displays the history of German music, interactive. Highly recommend when in Bonn, or as a day trip from Koln. It's free!!! Takes about 1.5-3 hours, but at former being if you rather quickly go through without taking in full detail.

It's like a museum with historical phenomenon. Here you can get different news, get to see features, objects and staff from world war. You can get a knowledge about German history. But the only problem is some of the guide are written in Deutsch language. Otherwise you can buy souvenirs, can take snacks in the first floor where there is a cafe. Just you have to put your bags in the first floor with free ticket.

One of the best and biggest museums, showing Germany contemporary history from 1945 till today- cascading the era of before and after German reunification till today. Museum offers visitors audio-visual aid for better understanding.

Absolutely great experience. Very interesting and detailed explanations on a lot of important bits of Germany's history. Some knowledge of German is required, since all the signs are in German (not sure about the audio tour, our group had a (German) guide).

  • 5/5 Geo C. 1 year ago on Google
awesome that entry is free. Can enter via Ubahn underground doors directly, instead of exiting Ubahn platforms to surface level. follow the sign for "Haus der Geschichte". fantastic museum about German recent history after WW2 ended. there are so many displays, so many artefacts like posters, clothing, general things that people used. English speakers should use google glasses/google lens to translate all the posters and German information. there is an english Audio guide which i wish covered more displays. don't forget to view the foundations from Rome era on the lowest floor.

An information centre with a reference library including extensive audiovisual resources allows visitors to research historical topics in greater detail. The former library of the Gesamtdeutsche Institut (library on the history of the GDR) has been housed in the Haus der Geschichte since 1 January 1994 and is integrated into the information centre. With a catalogue of more than 180,000 volumes amassed over 50 years, it is one of the leading collections on the history of the GDR and of relations between the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany. In his government statement of October 13, 1982, right after taking office, Chancellor of Germany Helmut Kohl called for a collection of German history and the German division after 1945. He presented plans to establish a museum of German history in West Berlin, to be complemented by a House of History of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn dedicated specifically to the West German state. While some feared that a national museum would be viewed as an attempt to kindle a new nationalism, others argued that it was precisely because Germany's past was so complex and wrenching that Germans needed to understand their history. The German Bundestag confirmed the institution in 1989. Helmut Kohl opened the permanent exhibition on June 14, 1994. The first president of the foundation was Hermann Schäfer. In June 2007, Hans Walter Hütter, his long-term representative, was appointed as his successor.

If you're interested in the history of World wars and their effects on Germany, this is a must visit place for you. This museum tells you a story of the Post war period Germany and how it became one of the largest economies in the world today. It's informative and inspirational at the same time. The entry is free and the cloak room is available on the ground floor.

Very cool museum about German history from end of World War II up until now. It takes a lot of time, so take that into account. PLUS: it’s free!

  • 5/5 A Y. 1 year ago on Google
Amazing museum with so much to see. It's probably better to have at least 2 hours just to read and go through major panels that have English descriptions. The web-based audio guide (available in 4 languages - German, English, French, and Spanish) is also very good.

  • 4/5 Avesta 9 months ago on Google
Excellent museum with a significant amount on the DDR and its sociology (my field of research in the humanities) - which took me by surprise frankly since I thought it would be entirely on the BRD. Great little cinema as well, so much information and interactive content which has made it one of my favourite museums. A member of staff (well, a particular short woman) guarding the start of the exhibition was however incredibly rude and seemed to have more interest in discouraging visitors through their mocking/contemptuous attitude. Nevertheless - the rest of the staff were incredibly kind, chatty and helpful. Will be coming here again! Long live this museum!

  • 5/5 Marianna T. 8 months ago on Google
This place is really interesting with all its artifacts and love to detail. Visitors of all ages will find something for themselves to discover or even be shocked of. A pleasant bonus is that you don't need to buy tickets, it's free of charge and moreover has lounge zones with charges, WCs, and a cafe. Leave your backpack in the wardrobe, take a free brochure and you're all set and ready to start discovering the museum with its 3 flours.

It was free entry for some reason, they had quite a good collection, the historical stuff is in German, while the digital section is labeled in English. I spend around 2hrs here. It was worth it. I recommend a visit.

The museum is really big and lots of items inside The museum starts from (after ww2, 1945) until now. The bad thing is that there are NO English descriptions at all, although it is intended for foreigners to learn history about this great country I loved the place in general. I love German history Many original pieces and many replicas The museum has history about war, machines, politics, astro, life, people, .. I liked how the theme was affected by the timeline (united > east+west germany> united germany)

  • 4/5 Hien D. 7 months ago on Google
Get emotional at first with some corners of post war. Informative and diversely displayed which is really nice however a few English signs to be found except the very brief main ones. In stead they walk you thru by audio by QR code.

  • 4/5 Gabriel G. 4 months ago on Google
Very nice museum, with English descriptions on the larger texts. Wish there had been translations available under the smaller items on display. Overall the quality of the exhibitions is nice and the items are well presented. Also it’s FREE! Only downside is that once the museum reaches the 90s-2000s it begins to feel rushed, almost seems like they ran out of space.

Amazing place! The museum is incredible: beautiful, interesting and interactive. If you are in the area you HAVE to visit. It’s completely free to access, too! I can’t believe how few young people I see there. It would definitely be a great place to take your family. They have a cafe that is a bit expensive, but there is a beautiful lounge with varied seating, and many books. I’ll definitely be returning and may make it a regular spot to spend my free days. Free wifi across the entire building. The exhibits also have a significant amount of signs translated in English, but a lot is only in German.

(Translated by Google) When I entered this house of history, many, many memories came to mind. For example when it was ?? session week here in Bonn. Messrs. F-J Strauss, H.Wehner, Kohl, Walter Scheel, Karl Karstens etc., etc., everything of rank and names, and, above all, really had something to say {not like today 2020 these INCOMPETENTEN- IMPORTANTUER u. SELF-ACTOR), one encountered. People started talking, went to drink Kölsch, etc. in boots, etc. etc. At this point in time "?? OUR GERMANY was still in civilized and orderly conditions. This house is worth a visit at any time. SELBSTDARSTELLER ) , begegnete man. Man kam ins Gespräch, ging ' en Kölsch trinken u.a. im Stiefel usw usw.
