I visited this bar without any particular expectations, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised by the unique entertainment it offered. The highlight of the evening was a talented musician who skillfully played the guitar while simultaneously creating trumpet-like sounds. It was truly impressive! However, one aspect that bothered me a little was the bar's policy of not allowing patrons to talk to each other while the artists were performing. While I understand the intention of maintaining a focused atmosphere, it did hinder the socializing aspect of the evening. They also had some interesting cultural practices that stood out. Rather than clapping hands, they encourage guests to rub their hands together, which adds a unique touch to the experience. Additionally, it surprised me that filming or taking pictures was not allowed, which may disappoint those looking to capture memories. However, I can appreciate the bar's desire to maintain an intimate atmosphere and respect the artists' performances. Overall, the offers a great experience for music enthusiasts. It's clear why it has become a favorite spot for the likes of Madonna. While it might not be the ideal place for socializing due to the no-talking policy during performances. Just remember, don't expect to strike up conversations or take pictures during the performances!

Had an amazing time! We arrived around 9, allowing us to pick seats, have beers and chat. The ladies who worked there were all very lovely. Around 11 the music began which was magical. The musicians are the main act, it’s not a place where you chat while it happens in the background. rubbing hands together instead of clapping is encouraged and is part of the fun. The musicians include the crowd in their performances as well. We left around midnight due to our own schedule and the line outside was huge to get in. It’s quite nice that they keep it intimate inside and not jammed packed. I highly suggest coming early, just relax, chat, drink, have a good time. The music will come on eventually and you’ll have a great time with the crowd.

A part of the hidden soul of Lisbon. Have been coming here for years and you never know what you're going to get, but it's always a magical experience. Musicians gather here incognito to share the love of music and rhythm either grabbing instruments off the walls or bringing their own, occasionally also inviting the audience to participate. No clapping allowed 😉

This bar is amazing! I don't know whether it is like that everyday, but we came in on a Saturday evening and had the most wonderful night full of music and laughter. When I am around town anotherday I will come back for sure!

My favourite station at the very core and the oldest district of Lisbon, namely, Alfama where you may not only have a very cozy and homly atmosphere to spend your evening with drinks and typical portuguese pub experience but an amazing live musical ecstasy lead by a Music Maestro Jon Luz who always attracts diverse musical talents from all over the world. Just step in you will see a small version of the whole world with love, harmony, cultural diversity, respect with drinks, dance, music and something more than those who knows! You may find your new love and life! Lisbon and Tejo Bar are waiting eagerly to welcome you! I used to go there to share my own music and get me always energised and invigorated for my everyday life! Why don't you try an evening together with me and Jon, his team members working inside to make your time enjoyable like Fadista Mira, Violinist Erica, Jose as well as our all respected friends from different continents yet connected through our very unique souls know no bound!

One of the most magical experiences I’ve ever encountered with live music. A very small (yet cozy bar). Arrive early to get a seat as the place fills up quickly after 9:30pm. If you’re looking for live music with an intimate feel - you must go! You won’t be disappointed

A tiny bar run by folks who love music. A fantastic place to get immersed in different type of music as musicians rotate regularly. Beer and wine are what most drinks but they also have spirit and cocktails along with some food. The place comes alive after 9.

My favorite bar in Lisbon with amazing authentic music by local musicians. It’s nice that places like this still exist. No photography or videos — great to be out listening to music where everyone isn’t recording the event with their phones. A real experience :)

Great little jazz/folk/live music bar - it’s small, intimate, soulful and fun :) don’t worry if the doors are closed - they sometimes do when music is playing to save the Neighbour Sat night - knock gently or wait for the next break!

We only got drinks so I can't speak for the food but I had such a lovely evening here. The place looks so cute and quaint. The atmosphere is great. I had the pleasure of listening to Andre (?) sing and play the guitar and I even got up to play some music with him myself. He's a fantastic musician and was very chill. Everyone spoke great English too. The place is small and I noticed some reserve signs on some tables so I'd recommend booking in advance because this is a place you definitely do not want to miss out on. The only thing I wish I knew in advance is that there was a charge for admission. I think it's around €5 I don't know exactly. Don't let this put you off visiting! It's definitely worth it. I just think people should know before entering. You should also know that inside the bar you don't clap your hands to applaud someone. You rub them together to reduce noise. Very funny and makes sense. I love this place

Cool small music bar with great live acts. Drinks are cheap and it has a good atmosphere. The guy singing on the night we were there was amazing however the crowd insist on doing silent clapping after each song which is weird.

A fantastic place where we witnessed a jam session in full flow. One main guy who was brilliant supported the whole thing. Then 4/5 others jumped in and out of the jam. Great variety of acoustic music was performed. Lovely bar staff with good value. Drinks. What more could you ask for ? Thanks for a wonderful night.

Thank you Tejo Bar! We were in Alfama for 2 nights and visited Tejo Bar on both nights. A great hidden spot for live music. Staff were brilliant and the food was lovely. The live music was some of the best we've ever seen.

Great ambiance if you're lucky enough to find a seat. The music is an eclectic mix of whatever the evening offers. Don't clap your hands though, you rub them together if you enjoyed the performance, presumably to cut down on the loud noise of clapping in this quaint small space. Very friendly place, give it a go.

Recommended by a friend and it did not disappoint. A small and very intimate music venue with local artists rotating every couple of songs. A cosy atmosphere where the art takes centre stage and conversation is restricted to the intervals.

Wonderfully laid back and relaxed live music bar. It's a hidden gem, there's a sign above the door and the sound of live music from outside, otherwise there's no clue about where it is. The door is closed during sets but give a knock and you will be welcomed in for a modest contribution of €5 each, payable when you choose to leave. A very eclectic mix of improvised acoustic sets with an equally eclectic clientele, the atmosphere is so laid back that clapping for the musicians is not appreciated but sliding your hands together is, strange but it works here. Drinks only, no food. Fantastic find!

Incredible, one of the best nights of my life. Everyone was so friendly and music was outstanding You do need to queue to get in unless you get there early, but well worth the wait

I loved this place, we had a lovely G&T and we were warmly welcomed by the staff. Then the music started and I thought for a moment that it was the biggest wind up ever. My wife was hysterical trying to stop laughing, but other patrons thought she was just emotional at the performance. It was completely mental, a guy playing the accordion, French style music, then the guy on the piano joined in and I can only describe him as screaming in a high pitched squeal, his singing was the craziest you will ever hear in your life. When the entertainment stops, you don’t clap, you rub your hands together, no idea why, it can’t be to keep the noise down, as the piano screaming guy brought the house down. We were only in for the one drink before dinner, but my wife would have collapsed laughing if we’d have stayed any longer. The people were really lovely and friendly, but our views on music differ a great deal, but each to their own. If you’re at a funeral and want somewhere to go afterwards, then this is the place. Would love to go back, gin was excellent, but my wife is still laughing 😂😂

Can’t speak for the food, but the live music and atmosphere was amazing. We just happened to stumble upon this amazing little bar and we’re blown away by the wonderful live (improvisation) musicians who gave their all and truly created a magical atmosphere. It’s a truly great little find. Every 20 minutes a different solo musician or group of musicians playing different instruments. Beautiful. Just be sure to get their in time to be assured of a seating place, or get a reservation in beforehand :)

Magical place. We dropped by late on a random Tuesday night and felt very welcome, great live music, friendly, local vibe, felt like sitting in a friend's living room watching a live concert. Just really a beautiful little place with heart and soul.

Multi-cultural spot that blends live music from invited musicians from the 4 corners of the world with the voices and talent of customers willing to add their magic to the atmosphere. The owner is a mad brilliant artist that sets the tone of the night making every event unforgettable. Not to miss!!

Only stopped by for a quick drink. A very cosy place to while away the time with some alcohol. Staff were friendly and engaging. Shame we couldn't stay for the music. I would assume the atmosphere would be amazing later.

The place is cute in the heart of Alfama. The Italian waitress very nice and polite, later at night the singer was very good, nice, polite signing Brazilian song. However, the other waitress was so impolite and rude since the beginning, I asked is this the bar where Madonna came? She looked at me with disdain and did not answer. Honestly, I really didn’t care about it, I lived close to this place for years but I have never been, just went there because my Italian friend wanted to go there because of Madonna. I was talking with the singer because I am also from Brazil and I was singing and happy, when this other impolite waitress who was also from Brazil was saying I was talking too much, asking too much ( when the singer was asking suggestion) treating me bad in front of everybody when I was giving compliments to the singer. I said: let’s singing happy songs and she replied: if don’t you like go away. What? I am sorry I was enjoying all the songs because all of them were from my country. Anyway, horrible waitress: mood, impolite and even not could speak another language. The place is cute but with this kind of people working there, for sure I will never go back. The place has potential but they have to choose the staff better, people who works with public must be polite and friendly. I wish I could give more stars, but one is for the singer and the other for the Italian waitress. The Brazilian waitress deserves to learn how treat and respect people. That is all!

Pure musicianship, pure bliss. Small bar with intimate music experience (tradition of no clapping, but rubbing of hands to show appreciation). Staff were so accommodating for us with our baby and pram. Will return 100%. Obrigado!

We were warned to get there early so we arrived at 20:00 hrs. We were the only ones in the bar however the OUTSTANDING staff began playing as soon as we sat down. They were chill, friendly. And the music was beautiful. As time passed more and more people sat however the intimate nature of the bar never changed. It felt like you were just listening alone. I'll be back tomorrow, the next day, and every time I come to Lisbon from them on.

What a gem of a place! Came to listen to music and left with a high. The musicians randomly collaborate and inspire each other. Great place for post dinner drinks night out.

Very cozy atmosphere, owner was friendly and allowed me to play the piano spontaneously. Then the ppl went quiet the moment i sat at it and listened respectfully. The scheduled musicians played a very beautiful Portuguese songs and everyone was open for chat.

Omg... let me tell you about this place. So cosy and intimate. Beautiful music jams from people of the 🌎. The owner is sweet and an amazing musician! No pics or videos are allowed from inside, which makes you want to snick from the window - busy as hell!!!! Absolutely stunning 😍

Came here with my cousins after seeing the sign for the bar. Originally there was not enough space because it's a tiny spot but the owner made a table for us. This turned out to be My favorite night in Lisbon. There was a small and intimate fado performance for around 20 of us. The artists were great and the drinks were great too. Thank you Tejo Bar.

Magical. Here and now. I first arrived here in 2016, brought by my friends on my birthday after they finished their gigs elsewhere. I kept going every evening on that stay. Now doing the same 6 years after, starting from another birthday. Here will be unlike anything you have seen and heard, a meditative experience that time stops. What is created here exists only here and only now. #ichigoichie

Wow. Magical is definitely the word! Came super late (1am) stayed for only a couple of songs but in those 10 min I already committed myself to coming back the next night! Lovely corner of Lisbon (Celeb trivia: Madonna apparently also frequented this place when she lived in Lisbon)

  • 5/5 Ines G. 1 year ago on Google
Fabulous. Came here on a whim with some friends on Thursday night - we found ourselves in the middle of a fado singing session. The hosts were generous and funny, and made room for everyone to enjoy and participate as they wished. Delicious caipirinhas.

That's a magical tiny space. It reminds me some historical indie bars of the London underground like Jamboree or N.14 Bacon Street where buskers used to go and jam after playing the whole day in markets and famous streets. Absolutely a must go place in Lisbon if you love that dreaming atmosphere and vibes ❤️
