Substandard food served with a LOT of pretense. Cheap house wine sold at ∆ high prices. Was there with my family. If you like to be greeted, treated like if you were at a fine restaurant and end up with low quality food, that's your spot. I would avoid. Addendum: the waiter was rude, to say the least. He came to apologize for something that went wrong, saying that he understood something that we didn't say. I told him that he was told twice and he nodded twice, "just say sorry and that would be it". He replied something like "please be polite..."!!! That sent me off and told him repeatedly "Go! Go! Go!". I blame it on the language. He probably didn't understand what he was saying, even though he had a perfect English when he explained the menu...

Simply one of the best meals I’ve had ever and definitely the best in Portugal. Cash only, prepare for a wait. I was dining solo so I got a seat immediately but it was on the stairs inside - not as bad as it sounds in terms of comfort. Cash only. Menu changes daily and is in Portuguese but the staff are extremely welcoming and explain the menu one by one in English for foreigners to understand. pork Neck, scallops and foie gras are all excellent . 2 or 3 plates is enough for one person.

Be prepared to get on their waitlist for dinner, but the wait is guaranteed worth it. They accept cash payment only - not to worry as there is ATM nearby. Their service for such a small restaurant is rather top notch. The staff explained the menu in English with such details and would answer any queries. They let me try their wine option and changed it when I did not like it. Most importantly, they did it with great sincerity! It was amazing to see because they do it to the other guests too. Great energy. Food was amazing. I am glad I spent my last night in Lisbon at this restaurant. This place might be the gem while in the city. Not to be missed.

This meal was a dream. Through & through. Worth the wait and every euro. The atmosphere is charming, the staff were friendly, and each bite was superb. Order a bottle of Serra Oca and enjoy yourself. Cash only. We’ll certainly be back!

A Quaint Lunch with Room for Improvement I had the pleasure of dining at this for me new spot for lunch yesterday. The ambience of the place struck a charming chord, with its cozy interiors providing a welcoming atmosphere. The staff here are truly a delight, greeting and serving with pleasantness that adds to the overall warmth of the place. The menu was a delightful journey, boasting a selection of delicious dishes that were complemented by an admirable selection of wines. The service was commendably swift, ensuring that there was little waiting time before I could dive into the meal. However, every new experience has its learning curves, and here's what I think could be better. The establishment is currently operating on a 'cash only' basis, which was made clear right at the entrance. A bit of a heads up for those who are used to carrying just plastic. While I enjoyed the Bacalhau a Bras, I found some pieces of the fish excessively salty, which did disrupt the flavor balance. Additionally, a minor yet notable point, the plate served was not preheated. This meant that the food cooled down quicker than one might prefer, taking away from the otherwise enjoyable dish. In summary, my lunch was a mixture of delightful flavors and charming service, set back slightly by a few practical shortcomings.

This was a highlight of our trip to Portugal. They don't take reservations, so you have to arrive early to put your name down, go for a drink close by while you wait, and be back promptly to get your table during the next seating. Their imaginative, but simple food, great wine and cocktails (try the tragédia), and very intimate vibe make Taberna well worth waiting for. It was so good we even came back for lunch the next day.

Easily one of the best meals we've had in Lisbon (my third visit to this city). We arrived at 5:25 to queue for a table of 2, luckily made it for the first sitting. It was a Saturday night. This place is cash only! The menu is on a blackboard and the waiter explained every single item to us. Very attentive and provided good recommendations. Even with first sitting some items sold out just as we finished ordering. Highly recommend the scallops, razer clams (must use bread to soak up the yummy sauce) and ox tongue. Very friendly staff and laid back atmosphere.

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here! Waited over 30 minutes for a table (arrived at 2:30) but we were happy to do so. Staff were fantastic and the waitress who explained the menu to us (which I believe changes quite often?) was super passionate about it and made everything sound so delicious 😂 unfortunately we had limited cash and weren’t that hungry so it wasn’t the right time to sample everything. The scallops were AMAZING and we also loved the green beans. Tried the pig head for something different and it was pretty good but not our favourite - the stewed pork was great but the fried batter didn’t seem quite necessary. Would love to come back!

Easily the best meal we had in Lisbon. We arrived 15 minutes before they opened and were third in line for a seat for two. We were really lucky. The line went around the block soon after. The menus were all written in chalk on big boards that the waiter explained one by one. We chose three plates to share which was the perfect about for two people with smaller appetites. It was surely the best swordfish I ever had and the cheese at the end was so delicious it felt like dessert. Don’t skip on the bread. Their anchovy butter was to die for.

This was a surprise! And a good one! Went for dinner and had the most delicious and creative tapas ever. Staff were amazing and so so helpful! They explained all the dishes and what they recommended ordering. You could tell products were as fresh as they get. Definitely worth the 45 min await. Dishes change depending on the day you go and on the products in season. Got the chance to try some of their persimmon dishes and they were amazing, specially the goats cheese one. Highly recommend.

Lives up to the hype!! Had a toddler in tow so I made sure to arrive by noon to get seated right away. Sure enough there were already 3 parties there waiting before me. I was at first told to wait 15 minutes but then the host reconsidered when she saw my baby and let me sit down. People after me had to wait some time to get seated. The menu is written on chalkboards and they bring it around and walk you through each option. The prices are very reasonable. I ordered the peixinhos (fried green beans), rabbit stew, and chocolate mousse. I tried to order two mains but the waitress stopped me, telling me what I had was enough. I didn’t know green beans could be so good? Everything I tasted was exceptional, and I feel like you can’t go wrong here. The service was kind and attentive. The restaurant interiors are a vibe. They’ll offer you bread at the beginning as though it’s included, but know that it’s an extra charge, and it’s nothing special. Cash only.

Very cute but small establishment. No reservations. They open at 6pm, I got there around 5:45 pm and there was already a line of people waiting. One of the servers came out and started taking names and said to come back at 6pm. With that said I was able to get a table for Right when they opened. Started with some bread and olives which were offered by the server. I ordered the scallops and the fresh fish ceviche with coconut milk. Both dishes were really fresh with a well balance of flavors. I like that the restaurant is run by a female chef and most of the staff is female as well. I have learned the one big difference between the US and Portugal is when they bring starters to the table you will Be charged. Usually when they offer bread at the table in the states, it’s free of charge. Just a heads up. They also charge for water as well. I only mention this because I only had €31 and I ended up €1 short. This was so embarrassing when it was time to pay the bill. I told the server I would go to the apt I was staying at and bring the other € 1 back. Luckily my place was not that far away. When I came back she offered me a sour Cherry liquor. (Guess she didn’t think I would come back) anyway, thought that was really nice. I would definitely go back as the food, ambiance was really great. I will say I will go back with more cash next time so I can have a more relaxing and enjoyable dinner. CASH ONLY.

It was our very first restaurant we went to for lunch as we arrived in Portugal for the first time and I can’t imagine a better introduction to local vibe, food, and restaurant scene. The place is small but cozy, waiters speak English and are super helpful explaining the menu and wine options. we had very good organic wine, mussels were cooked perfectly, and other appetizers were extremely fresh and delicious.

The food was soooo good, and if I start dancing in my seat it is because I am really enjoying the food. Shout out to the veal tounge burger thingy the just got better for every bite I took. So many flavours. Also ate a vegetable dish that was out of this world. The chocolate cake was a winner too. Yeah, mindblown.

We technically ordered everything on the board and too bad that we r travelling from London and Sydney and we didn’t bring enough Euros to reorder some of the food that we like as they accept cash only! All the dishes are delicious and fresh. Staff are nice, friendly and efficient. Will definitely bring more euros and come back next time!

I recommend this place 100%. The staff was so kind, and explained everything so well. The food was very very worth it. The scallops, (vieiras) were to die for, cooked in a miso butter and accompanied with seaweed and bit of salt. Oh my god. The ceviche was very very good, with a rice crisp on top, but that was not too flavorful. The frango piri piri, (typical Portuguese chicken) was so tender and well seasoned. The chili sauce was a bit unnecessary and did not combine too well with the chicken, but fortunately it was on the side. We didn’t grab dessert but I’m sure they would have been good. Cheers to the girl who took our order and was so gentle and patient. Lovely time and lovely place.

This place is cash only and the service is relatively show. The inside is quite small so if you’re not there at opening expect to wait. The menu is on a chalkboard but I got the razor clams which were pretty good and my entree consisted of a fish from south Portugal and a purée of some sort. The food overall was alright and I probably wouldn’t come back

Don’t listen to my review. Listen to my behavior. I came here two nights in a row, for three trips to Lisbon. Why? It’s just fantastic. Arrive ten mins before opening time and get on the list.

cash only. the board menu changes often and very small menu so you’ll never know what they have that day. the razor clams were soooo good. i could eat a few plates of them! the scallops were okay - too rich for me and nothing special. i wish they had other snails or seafood that day! or more variety of dishes. friendly english-speaking staff. only a few small tables so come for lunch when they just open.

Timing is everything...well, otherwise we wouldn't be here, you and I, right? Here, you want to arrive towards the end of lunch service...after 2 you won't have to wait long. The kitchen is skilled, really skilled. If you read my reviews, you'll know I say that about once a year. But you need the salt tolerance of a fish...its pretty liberal here, as in most of lisbon. The chocolate mousse is better than mine...first time I've said that. Apart from the overcooked scallops, the skills were evident, but no more so than the salad. Simply brilliant flavour balance and knife skills in a dish that looks simple, but is as hard as a Phillip Petite twin Towers crossing. Be polite. Be patient.

I recently dined at this small restaurant, and I must say, it offers an authentic and bustling environment that's quite charming. However, it's important to note that they only accept cash payments and operate on a walk-in basis. The highlight of the experience was undoubtedly the food, which was exceptionally fresh and delicious.

This was hands down the best meal we’ve had all year. I can still taste the shrimp ceviche and chocolate cake. The service was lovely, and our server gave exceptional recommendations for both wine and food. We can’t wait to go back again in the future!

So happy to get a place to this place. You really have to go at around 5.15pm if you want the first sitting at 6pm or be put on a list for the same night. We had bread and olives to start, scallops, swordfish, eggplant, pork ribs and pineapple dessert. Everything was delicious. Totally worth the wait to get in (45mins wait from 5.15pm). They were patient to explain every dish and recommended the white and red wine to go with our dinner.

My boyfriend and I had the best experience here. We ordered six dishes including our dessert which was incredible. We highly recommend the pork dish “secrets de Porco preto”. Every dish we got we recommend, please see pictures for reference. The wait staff were patient and accommodating and the house wine is delicious! You must come here for a great authentic meal.

Great place! Amazing experience. Thanks of great host u know everything how it works there. Great job! U can enjoy waiting with a glass of wine or a bottle. Amazing food sharing with reasonable prices. Make reservation or be patient, but for sure it’s worth it! Another advantages is opened at Sunday and Monday!

The food and service here was excellent! Their attention to detail is admirable. One of the best restaurants I’ve been to on my trip to Portugal. The chicken was so juicy and full of flavour. The fish was perfectly salty and crispy! The local port wine that the server recommended was also really good! It was some sort of white wine made with green grapes - very refreshing and smooth. The ambience of the restaurant was also very nice. Quite charming!

We had a great dining experience at Taberna, which came highly recommended by a few friends. We arrived at 5:15 PM and were seated immediately without any wait. I think the key thing is to arrive early ☺️. The restaurant is cash-only, however from my prior research, we came prepared. The staff were very kind to explain the full menu in English. Every dish was elevated in terms of flavour and presentation. 5/5! Only thing is that as we were a group of 3, one of the seats was a stool, which wasn’t the most comfortable.

The best meal I’ve had in a long time. Staff were amazing and so friendly. The scallops are a must and all sauce must be delicately slurped up with a piece of bread.

Fantastic dinner and easily our favourite and best meal in Lisbon! Be sure to get there early to get a seat because they don't take reservations. We showed up 15 min before 6pm on a weeknight.

It’s a special place. Food is different, is made with love, is tasty and it’s cooked in a lovely way. Only took couple of pictures cause I was too busy enjoying my meal. A bit pricy, that’s true. And you need to pay cash, unbelievable nowadays!

A very tiny spot best for two and maybe three. On our visit there was just one table of locals, the rest were travelers. Food was really good, atypical. Menu changes daily. This is the kind of place you can just go with whatever they’re offering and it will be really well prepared and unique. We had friend mackerel, an autumnal veggie rice dish, and sautéed sea scallops. Everything was perfect.

This little Tapas style restaurant made our first Portuguese meal very impressed. Service is charming, and all dishes are tasty.although the price is a little expensive, But overall is great experience for us.

We ordered 4 dishes between 2 people. Each dish was very interesting and served unique enjoyable flavours. The staff were very friendly and took their time to explain the whole menu. Seats need to be reserved on the door, so make sure to get here early (6-8pm) or risk not being served.

This restaurant was recommended to my boyfriend and I from a friend who had lived in Lisbon. Despite the long wait time (we were third in line at 5:15 and they open at 6) we would still recommend this place if you have the time. In particular do not skip the SCALLOPS! Notable second mention to the prawn kinilau. Staff were SO friendly and knew the food well. Amazing!

This is a must try in Lisbon. Fantastic service as all the staffs are passionate about food, also very friendly. Ever changing menu with different flair. Doesn’t take reservation but always worth the wait right before it opens. Have taken many people to the restaurant many times throughout the years. Always left with great impressions.

Cute little restaurant with nice small plates and good service. The portions are quite small so don’t go too hungry. Also you have to get there at just before 6pm to queue and put your name down for whatever slot you get to the front for, so there is a bit of waiting around.

  • 5/5 Hunter G. 6 months ago on Google
All dishes were exceptional and it has a great ambience. A high quality dining experience. Recommend you get there around 5 to put your name down for the shortest wait time.

I'm surprised this place doesn't have a 5/5 rating. Nested in a quieter street, it's a cute little restaurant with incredible food. I absolutely loved their razor clams and scallops. The tiramisu is some of the best I've tried (and I've been to Italy!). Highly recommend it. *Make sure you plan for an hour wait. We went on a Wednesday and had to wait for 90 mins for our table.

I ordered cod fish cake which came with salad, and pot of cooked rice and beans. We also got homemade spicy paprika sauce which when mixed with rice and beans makes whole meal very very delicious 😋. It was the best food I ate in Lisbon. The ambient is also very nice and there seem to bit local Portuguese guests which confirms that the food is authentic and portguese. Prices were very reasonable since the food is delicious and portions are big. I definitely recommend this place. I will definitely come back there!

Our best meal in Lisbon and worth the wait…get there at 5:30pm at the latest for a table. Service is well timed and menu thoughtfully organized. Food is paired well with the sides and cooked perfectly.

  • 5/5 Muriel Swijghuisen R. 1 year ago on Google
Delightful. I enjoyed every minute. The food was fresh, uncomplicated, the service authentic and knowledgeable. Most importantly, they didn't rush my extended lunch (I arrived a bit past the usual luncheon hour too) and staff offered insightful information about my fare. I liked the fact things were more spaced in time. I rush my food too much as it is. The oysters (6) with lime and salt were fantastic and the rabbit with fries and salad delicious. Things don't need to be complicated to taste good. The vintage port wine came with an interesting story to boot. I love that sort of thing. Thank you.

Considered one of the top culinary experiences in Lisbon albeit with the longest wait. Yes, we waited for 2hr 10min for a party of 4. Yes, you can leave and grab a drink at a nearby bar, although in that amount of time you’re likely to get hungry and have a pre-dinner before your dinner (we might or might not have done just that). Is it worth it? I think for the quality and creativity of food the hype is a bit too much. In Prado, for example, you can get just as delicious dishes with no wait, by reserving a spot. I also found some of the entires just OK. All in all, excellent time but a bit overrated and the wait time takes away from experience (although some will argue it’s part of the charm).

My last meal in Lisbon. Bf suggested we try this place as it was popular and in the touristy area we were planning to visit. Theres no reservations and its CASH ONLY. I repeat. CASH ONLY. We arrived shortly after they opened for lunch and followed the instructions outside the door—-basically wait there until they acknowledge us. Realized why when we finally made it in….the place is tiny. I could whisper into my neighbor’s ear if I wanted to. You can’t possibly have people constantly poking their heads in the door with all the diners right there. Heck, even the toilet was right in the dining area separated by a small door. We were introduced to the dishes via a small chalkboard+ English translation by one of the staff. Couldn’t read a thing on the board and google translate was useless…but we decided on the scallops, tuna, and mushroom dishes based on pictures. We were served some bread + olive oil + olives to snack on while we waited. Every single dish was spectacular. The “fries” did become slightly redundant because we had them in 2 dishes, but I’m glad they weren’t the typical “fries” but rather these crispy thin fried slivers. The overall flavoring was on point and tuna was juicy. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Wouldn’t mind returning at all.
