The museum is so much better than I expected. Honestly, it's a must in Lisbon (for antique art of course). I would say it's very big - 4 floors with expositions, garden and an additional section (extremely beautiful as well) - and the art is as expected. Great selection, mainly religious but not exclusively, and most importantly, the very famous painting of Bosch. It was a nice experience and you'll probably be able to do the whole museum in 2-3 hours.

So far, this is one of the best museums of ancient art I have seen. The collection of paintings and art religious statues are amazing. I highly recommend this museum in Lisbon, Portugal.

If you only have time to visit one art museum in Portugal, no doubt, this is the one. 1.       vast collections of mater--works of arts in different periods— one of my favorites is João Afonso’s Arcanjo São Miguel. Looking at his smile, understand there must be angel from heaven; 2.       creative exhibition arrangements-- go to see the scene they created at end of crib show room, excellent example of mix and match between old and modern; 3.       rigorous research—read the leaflet they prepared for that breath-taking work: Martyrdom of St. John Damascene by Luigi Miradori on their latest exhibition cooperated with Fundação Gaudium Magnum – Maria e João Cortez de Lobão (FGM) , which give a good demonstration of how they study a work and also try to pass their achievement and the beauty of the art to their visitors by shifting boring technical term into a easy understanding explanation. After visit, do not forget to sit down awhile at the garden in front of museum, rest you soul a little bit with a little poem by Teixeira de Pascoaes there: Ser alegre é ser luz, rir é florir cravos na infância, rosas pequeninas. São sorrisos de amor que estão a abrir.

Absolutely massive museum full of incredible works spanning hundreds of years as you follow the development of European art throughout the past few hundred years. Leave significant time to see everything as it was far larger than expected! However, I would have liked to see them make the museum as a whole more informative with more signage.

If you like christian art come here, if you don't this is not the place for you. Most of the paintings and sculptures are about jesus etc. Impressive yeah but gets boring quick. Quite big place. I would go in another museum.

The art in this place is amazing. This museum is among the best in the whole of Portugal. Therefore, if you need to close off multiple wings due to lack of personnel, this to me proves of bad management. If you look back at older google reviews, you will see that this has been common practice for years.

Not the museum for me. If you love Jesus, Mary and dead white 17th century colonizers, you will like the museum. There was no "discovery", only seeking out and exploiting resources in other lands. No mention of the true source of wealth that fueled the opulence on display in the exhibits. Giving them two stars because the Bosch painting is pretty rad. Also they use ankle high barriers to keep you from touching the art, which I appreciate.

It’s a museum with paintings, some sculpture, antique jewelry, ceramics, textiles etc. I love paintings, so I quite enjoyed it. Don’t miss out to go to the garden. It’s so pretty. I came on Sunday around 1pm, paid €10 for entrance and no line. No audio guide though. But some items have description in English near it.

Worth the visit. They have exhibitions in all three floors. I would recommend starting on the third floor. On the first floor there is a door and some stairs that will lead us to a small coffee shop/snack-bar. Grabbed a bottle of water and drank outside on a lovely garden. When I went there there was barely any wind, but can imagine being a bit uncomfortable with too much wind. On the second floor they have a small shop, near the bathrooms. Additional documentation on the art would benefit greatly the experience.

Interesting place. Definitely recommend to start in the third floor and have some time to have a drink in the garden too. I'd have liked to see Christian art older than the XIV century too.

Although the weather was terrible on a Saturday morning, it’s incredible that hardly that many people visit this place. There are some significant historic Portuguese relics here. Gold, gem studded relics of the historic age. To painting by masters not probably cataloged correctly. However amazing and fantastic the collection is, there is a lot that needs to be addressed. The museum needs an advertising push to get people through the door. A lot of the pieces need better explanation and the artists of the works in the collection need to be brought to the forefront. There is so much room for huge improvement and it will need a lot of backers to help that off the ground.

An under publicised hidden gem of an attraction. Maybe the title should be changed from "Ancient" to "Historic" Art. Unassuming front entrance up a hill reveals a large building with gardens, exhibiting a large collection of different types of art:-Paintings, furniture, jewellery and silverware. The collection gives you a glimpse of the wealth and splendour of the past, sadly missing from the character of Lisbon city which was destroyed by the earthquake in 1755. Favourite moment was seeing the original "temptations of St. Anthony" by Hieronymus Bosch.

A big museum that is close to Santos station but it's a decent walk from the bus stop. They also require people with a backpack to leave it in their storage room where you need to hold onto a number to claim it back when you leave which is slightly annoying. You don't have to pay for this though. This museum has with it many different themes whether it's a historical figure, different painters, biblical, furnitures and Chinas etc, this has got it all. There were so much to see that I recommend taking your time over 2 or 3 hours here if you're a history buff. There are English on all the arts too! There a lot of toilets so that you don't need to remember where they all are. There is also a restaurant and a garden area on the group floor with a nice Outlook and some statues scattered around the grounds. Overall well worth a visit!

This is one of the best museums to visit in Lisbon and actually it has one of the largest collection of more than 40,000 items. The collection includes painting, sculpture, textiles, furniture and other decorative art forms from the Middle Ages to 19th century. It is open Tuesday to Sunday: 10h-18h, Entrance normal fee is €6.00 and Free entry at Sundays and holidays until 2.pm

An excellent museum with a variety on display. From ceramics to jewellery to paintings, all wonderfully curated and well maintained exhibits. Staff here are very helpful, informative and joyful. Lockers also available to store your backpack. Minimum of 2hrs, ideally 3 needed to fully enjoy exhibits. Highly recommend. Entry part of Lisboa pass.

An excellent museum in a beautiful building. Lovely oil paintings from the 16th Century and before depicting famous artists’s like Frey Carlos, and Flemish artist Jan van Scarel’s. Many paintings centered on prominent themes in the life of Christ. Beautiful textiles and furnishings displayed in impressive layouts. A great furniture exhibit donated by Bolivian diplomat Antenor Patino of French furniture. A sculpture garden with a lovely outdoor eating area.

National Museum of Ancient Art located in calm part of Lisbon with easy access by bus or walk distance. It's massive with 3 floors with extra exhibitions on ground floor- this summer Barcelona Gothic. Perfect for Sacred Art fans as predominate throughout all exhibition. There is little shop, toilets and lovely garden on the back. You will need to leave your bigger bag in the locker and any liquid containing alcohol also not allowed. Would recommend to buy combo tickets for museum + exhibition for €8

Three floors to explore. Most interesting to us are Chinese porcelain pieces from the XVI century as well as furniture pieces from many of Portugal's former colonies. Pleasant garden to get coffee.

Not the most unique collections, but still a pleasant museum. The art is not nearly so ancient as I would have thought-- mostly Renaissance era and later. If you are pressed for time go directly to the garden in the back, it is absolutely lovely and you do not have to buy tickets to enter.

I only wish the whole collection had been available to visitors. Incomplete and all, this classical visual art museum is worth visiting. The quality of the collection far surpasses its modesty in scope (compared to other similarly themed European museums). It is very smartly curated and you leave pleasantly surprised and more knowledgeable. For classic art lovers.

(Translated by Google) Unavoidable reference in the city of Lisbon. This Museum, founded in 1884, houses the most important art collection in Portugal from the 12th to the 19th centuries. The Museum is housed in a late 17th century palace built by the first Count of Alvor, D. Francisco from Tavora. Among the existing works of painting stand out St. Jerome of Albrecth Durer, Salome Lucas Cranach Anthony and The Temptations of Saint Hieronymus Bosch. It should be noted also the polyptych of São Vicente de Fora, the most important Portuguese painting of the 15th century. But the Museum still has a vast array of notables works of sculpture, ceramics, upholstery, jewelery.

Pieces like the Processional Cross See. XV, Funerary Tombstones of the century. IV, the Milk Virgin of the century. 16, one of the favorite themes of Josefa d´Óbidos, century. XVII, whose painting with the same theme burned in the fire that occurred in the Convent of Sta. Cruz in Buçaco on December 24, 2013. The last two images are from this wonderful painting. Beautiful building, lovely garden with a great view. A lot of the art is great, although due to the period it represents there is a lot of religious art, which at times feels slightly over bearing. But some of the pieces are amazing and there is a great variety of items on display.

Largest collection of Portuguese and European Art I have seen in Lisbon, Portugal 🇵🇹 . Great works on display from Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Younger and many others. I enjoyed the European painting section of the museum the most but sculptures, gold and metal work are not to be neglected.

Highly recommend this art museum. Firlstly when we enter this building, I kind of lost, suddenly there was a kindest lady came to us and welcome us, explained very patiently and detailly to us. I felt so interesting to see all the things. She recommended to start the front building first, and floor levels lay out by centuries. 16/17/18th. Really cool museum to tell the country history. I felt it was very educational visit. There were also few group students with their history teachers (I guess) too. I saw all the kids showed high interest to their teacher speech. Well done! There aslo a canteen service hot food, we brought our lunch to a beautiful garden at lower level. You can see the bridge and big Jesus statue over sea. Highly recommend!

Not exactly what I expected. The museum has a lot of religious art from the middle ages that, unless you're really into it, becomes quite tedious at some point (all crucifixions and tortured saints that look mostly the same despite being from different countries and centuries ...). The other half of the exhibition though compensates for it - there are a lot of household items, cutlery and jewellery that are quite intricate and beautiful. Some great big maps and some examples from the far east for me at least were the highlight of the museum.

Many of the paintings from Portugal, in particular, showed some history of Africans in Portugal, which I found very interesting! They got great collection, worth a visit if you are a fan of art. The branding, design and the curation are not as update as the national art museum in the rest if the world, but it is still a good museum if you have some basic understanding towards paintings and sculpture. The only dislike is the gallery staff in the Oriental session keep having telephone call just like he was in his own home, not even bother to keep his volume down, which is super disturbing.

This museum displays art and pieces from antiquity that illustrate Portugal's history. Paintings, pottery, textiles, sculptures, furniture and even a remnant of a very elaborate convent are on display. The museum itself is modern and airy. The entry fee is reasonable, with daily family rates; it's free on Sundays.

Great museum with mainly paintings. It houses one of my favourite paintings which I was finally able to see. I got in at 10:15 and the place was pretty much empty. Price is only 6 euro for an adult, recommended for a visit!

(Translated by Google) After years of absence, everything now seems new ..., here or there the memory punctuates lived marks! The collection of this magnificent museum is always stunning, Portuguese and European paintings by good masters, religious and worldly jewelery, national, African and Oriental furniture, ceramics from all the old and current national factories, many pieces from various Chinese periods, textiles, glass, and in any of these groups, a lot of quality and beauty! I recommend super comfortable shoes, informal clothes and detailed analysis, because in addition to the central figures, the details of the backgrounds matter ..., it is impossible to list the celebrities by countless, I highlight only on floor 1 an impressive and wonderful oratory! Affordable prices and the usual discounts! Fantastic Museum. Great paintings from many school across the centuries, giant collection of royal tableware. Don’t miss. Come early to spend some time in the garden.

  • 5/5 Osvaldo V. 2 years ago on Google
Great museum with so much history packed between its walls. FYI there is a lot of stairs and walking up of the three floors but worth the effort seeing all the pieces.

  • 4/5 Aldy J. 2 years ago on Google
The large spaces work very well with the huge triptychs and the massive gobelins. The halls were themed according to the time period and country of origin. When we visited the museum, there were quite a few exhibitions which were closed, we were especially sad about the jewelry and gold exhibition being under maintenance. Also, as with other museums of similar nature, the themes were rather Jesus and Mary focused until the 18th century paintings which offered a more interesting variety. The paintings and sculptures were beautiful but once you have seen your tenth Jesus and Mary, it starts to get a bit dull.

This museum is just amazing for anyone who appreciates antique chairs, chests, paintings and statues. If you're pressed for time though, it might be better to go for the palaces in Sintra or Gulbenkians museum.

This was a very engaging exhibit of Cathedral paintings and Christian art by Portuguese painters. It also included a large collection of Renaissance Catholic church artifacts. We used our Lisboa card for full admission. We spent about two hours of reading and viewing the curations. The staff were very helpful. We were required to check in all bags, but were allowed to photograph the art without flash. The Bosch artwork was not available to view as it was on tour. Overall, it was a very pleasant afternoon in Lisbon.

The history of religious art is extra ordinary😄. Att, sculpture, and metal art is incredible. We spent 5 hours in the museum, and also ate in the restaurant which was good and reasonable. A good way to spend the day

  • 4/5 Jeremy E. 11 months ago on Google
Large museum displaying religious (specifically, Catholic) art, artifacts and portraits from the 1300s through 1800s. Nothing contemporary sighted. €8 per adult includes permanent and special exhibition access. Museum would do well to arrange a swap with other institutions that are short on biblical scenes to diversify its collection, and spice things up if you will.

Great museum. Friendly staff at the entrance and some important works by Durer, Holbein and Bosch and notable Portuguese figurative painting and sculpture. The cafe is pleasant and you can get a decent lunch. The garden is also nice. A good place to come and look at art and get away from the sun.

Some interesting pieces, mostly of a religious nature. Clean and seemed air conditioned, but not a stunning or world-class museum. Not a waste of time, but not the best either.

One of my favorite museums in all of Europe. It is small, but packed with gorgeous artworks showing the power of Portuguese masters and beyond.

  • 3/5 Pascale A. 7 months ago on Google
Fabulous if you are interested in religious art from 17th century and earlier as the collection is vast. Also the Hieronymous Bosch painting is worth it alone. However not the friendliest of places.
