This was my favourite hostel stay. Every aspect, from the location and service to the breakfast and rooms, exceeded my expectations. The rooms were impressively spacious although the beds lacked curtains for added privacy. Nevertheless, the beds were comfortable, with ample storage space. There was a chair and sofa in the room as well. The shower space was neat and clean with a place to keep your toiletries. They had hair dryer too. The common area was pretty good, they had some fun board games, a kitchen space, and laundry facilities. The staff was the best, everything was well taken care of and they also gave a free welcome drink. Additionally, they keep your luggage for free which was very nice of them. Breakfast is included. Best thing ever! The location I would say is the best about this hostel. Situated in a very safe area, it offered access to a plethora of restaurants, shops, cafés with an incredible view of Lisbon right in front of the hostel !! :))

Fantastic! We stayed here for 2 nights in a 3 person suite. It was well decorated & comfortable. We had a room with a view towards the street & we had no issues with noise either from outside or the restaurant on a weekend. The location can’t be beat, proximate to everything & Ubers are very cheap. The staff is friendly & the breakfast was decent. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would return.

Great hostel, very pretty building, offers everything a good hostel should offer (amazing breakfast, luggage keeping, big safe lockers). The ‘’gym bathroom’’ concept is really nice, the bathroom is a separate room and has 3 toilets, 3 showers and 3 sinks ! The staff is also really nice and helpful. Super nice location, in front of a miradouro and from a walking distance of pretty much everything in the historical city. Negative : not sure about the 3 levels bunk beds, and also the stairs of the bunk beds are quite tricky to use, you have to be careful not to fall/slip.

Best hostel I have ever stayed in! Super reasonable if you book in advance. Lovely helpful staff who made me feel very welcome, and a free welcome drink provided at the bar. Very peaceful atmosphere and beautifully decorated light rooms with triple bunkbeds which I didn't find to be am issue personally. Incredibly clean including the bathrooms which were separated by gender. Breakfast provided, and a kitchen with places to prepare and store food. Fantastic location with a beautiful view point, near to loads of lovely restaurants and bars. I felt incredibly safe as a solo female traveller. Curtains could be added for privacy. Would 100% stay here again!

This place was exactly what I was looking for - comfortable and full of character, with a friendly and relaxed vibe. The staff were all super helpful and welcoming. The restaurant and rooftop bar are well worth a visit (popular with locals and other non-guests too). The location is amazing - so close to everything ,and the park / viewpoint across the road is like an extension of the place. I stayed in a dorm which was spacious, plenty of storage, sturdy and comfy beds. I'm told they are working on some additions for the beds (curtains and cubby holes) which will take this place to the next level. Bathrooms are a little on the small side, but there are plenty of them so I never had an issue getting a shower etc. Everything was always super clean and well looked after. Highly recommend for anyone looking to get away from grotty shared kitchens, and have a more classy / mature hostel experience, whilst still on a budget and with that sociable backpacking vibe!

I have extremely high expectations as i work in hotel development and i have to say - this place deserves beyond five stars. There is a women working breakfast - Loudres who ha a lot of joy in her heart and spreads it to the other travelers - a really special experience that not always travelers get Its these type of experiences that make a travelers experience special - especially after what can be for some a long journey Cannot recommend more highly this hotel - and i will say directly i have high expectations of the industry

Quite impressive building! Sadly the rooftop was leaking in the stairs but this didn’t impact our stay. Impeccable breakfast selection (for free!) and the service brought a smile to our faces. Breathtaking views of the city all around.

This was my first time staying in a dorm room full of 12 people and I have to say it was one of the best experience I've had. Upon check-in the staff greet you with a beautiful vibe which is shared with anyone that is staying there, you also get a drink voucher upon check-in (Porto Wine and Tonic is amazing!) The hostel can be loud, especially on the weekend but that's what you sign up for when the hostel is located in Lisbons night life centre. The location is also iconic a beautiful view as soon as you leave the hostel, I do recommend getting an electric scooter to get back up the hill tho as the climb is more like a 45° angle. 11/10 - will be back for sure

Great location, good view, high ceiling, magazine publication worthy hostel. Although I find the 3 bunk beds unsafe when it's dark at night. Would be great if your staff tried the rooms by themselves to understand what guests experience. In the girls bathroom, the toilets flush is broken and there's no soap or towels to wash hands.

Rooms nicely decorated and always clean. Breakfast selection limited. Reception staff could care more though, but breakfast lady from Cabo Verde made our day - always with so much energy, smile and very helpful. Greatly located!

I had a very pleasant stay at The independente Hostel. The staff was very friendly, there was just a miscommunication between the different employees which caused a problem with my reservation but they tried to solve it as good as possible. For the rest, the location is really a big plus, you can find everything nearby (nice restaurants, cafes, metro station, ...). The rooms, bathroom and breakfast were also fine. Highly recommended!

Everything was the best of the best!!! Super friendly and fun staff, great location, nice happy hour deal with very cheap drinks 16-19h, very good breakfast with croissants, fruit and much more delicious stuff. I also met great fellow travellers!! So just book this hostel if you want to have the best time in lisbon!

Amazing hostel! The location is great, everything is clean and the staff is very friendly. We had our breakfast included but we had to leave very early in the morning so they prepared us a little breakfast at 6am. We were very thankful. We recommend this place.

Perfect location in the middle of night life, staff is welcoming there is a free breakfast rooms are comfortable. It’s by the side of the road so sometimes it might be noisy, both a plus if u like it and could stay away if look for a calm and serene place.

Stayed in one of the hotel suites and have to say this is one of the best hotels I’ve stayed in. Great staff, loads of character and amazing bars and restaurants. Yes it’s noisy at night but so is most of Lisbon. Just take some ear plugs and you’ll be fine. Great value too.

Absolutely loved our stay here. We stayed in a private room and it felt more like a boutique hotel. Bed and pillows were amazingly comfortable. Quiet room and very clean. Breakfast was also included and the hostess was so friendly she made everyone feel like family. All topped off with a great roof top bar and welcome drinks. Would recommend.

The best hostel I have stayed at. That being said, it is still a hostel, and you won't necessarily have the luxuries of a hotel or Airbnb. This is fantastic value for what you pay. A great structure with a beautiful lobby area and restaurant, clean, large rooms with private lockers, and a very large shared lounge and kitchen on each floor. Everyone was so friendly and respectful. It is not the quietest, but what else could you expect from a hostel? You're also 100m from one of the most stunning viewpoints in all Lisbon! Highly recommended!

My boyfriend and I arrived in Lisbon for the first time a week ago, and took a Bolt from the airport to Independente. We drove into a super pretty area with amazing views of the city only to realize we were right in front of our hotel! We went inside to check in (we booked a room in the hotel, not the hostel) and the woman working the front desk was super friendly and helpful. She walked us over to our building to take us to our room and even helped with my heavy backpack. The room we got was incredible. So beautiful and so much attention to detail. I also requested ahead of time that we have a bottle of champagne waiting in the room for when we got there, and they provided that in a bucket of ice with two glasses. Great start to our time in Lisbon and we will definitely be back to stay next time we are there. Breakfast was tasty with several options and the rooftop bar is super cool. Great views at the top and there was a fun DJ playing music. Highly recommend!

Great location, right in front of a lookout. We stayed at the suites, which are in a separate building From the hostel. Room was very clean and spacious, a little dated but quite comfortable for a great price. The breakfast included cappuccino and eggs besides the standard continental buffet. O really great stay, friendly staff made our stay quite enjoyable

  • 5/5 Viktoria D. 8 months ago on Google
Honestly it was great. The staff is super nice. The people were nice. It was so clean. The bathrooms were cleaned 3 times a day. I loved the location and the free breakfast was a buffet. I can only recommend to stay here. They held our luggage without any additional costs for 6+h. And we got free welcome drinks.

Amazing stay for a (very) affordable price if you don't mind sleeping with other people (which is usually no problem at all). The location is amazing, close to pretty much everything at centric Lisboa, breakfast is also pretty complete, staff is very kind and nice (and we went as a group of 15 university friends)... Would repeat!

This hostel is AMAZING, full stop. When I arrived, I was stunned by the absolutely gorgeous view right outside the front of the building - you are treated to beautiful panoramic views of Lisbon. The service is exceptional, and Antonio in particular was a true professional who made me feel welcome from the moment I walked in - he is a 10/10 rockstar! I will definitely be back.

Located in the heart of Lisbon. There are many gigs going around the hostel. The staff was very courteous which made my first stay experience in Portugal very pleasant. The rooms and the bathrooms are super clean. Overall, if I go again to Lisbon I will choose Independente Principe Real! Chao!

  • 5/5 Meghan L. 5 months ago on Google
Enjoyed my stay here! Shoutout to Antonio at the front desk and the wonderful lady who managed the breakfast each morning. The common area isn’t super lively so as a solo traveler it can be harder to meet people, but I recommend spending some time by the bar or making friends with your roommates.

One of the best hostels I’ve stayed! I stayed in a female’s dorm, but the only thing that bothered me was that we didn’t have any curtains in our beds so I didn’t feel any privacy and we didn’t have big light during the night. Apart from that, the crew was so friendly and especially the lady in the breakfast, I loved her.

  • 4/5 Athanasia G. 3 weeks ago on Google • 5 reviews New
The hostel and location was great, super lovely and accommodating staff, beautiful old building with a fabulous free breakfast. Only downside was the design of the dorm (I stayed in a 6 bed room) the beds are stacked 3 high, and creak loudly with any movement. Same with the floor boards. There’s no main light in the room, only small individual lights beside each bed. This is to stop the person in the top bunk from being blinded by a ceiling light, so I respect that. I slept on the top bunk (with no curtains) and the light from the streets was a bit bright (no curtains on the windows either). Overall I enjoyed my stay, just didn’t get the best sleep but it is a hostel so it is what it is! The kitchen is quite small and not very well equipped, while I was there I didn’t notice anyone cooking, and it was hard to find 2 mugs for tea. But with the free breakfast and delicious food in the city, it’s easy to not need to use the kitchen. Be prepared to walk up some steep streets to get there and enjoy Lisbon!

Absolutely amazing place. Cuban style interior - it combines the feeling of a hostel with a bed and breakfast. The staff is amazing and the Croissants at breakfast also! Clear recommendation 👍

Amazing place well located for a visitor of Lisbon, staff is very nice and helpful. Shared kitchen, lounge, bar and restaurant available. I spent 3 nights in a dormitory and except the street is very noisy due to bars and night parties during the end of week, it was great.

Situated perfectly and has a quaint ambiance. Near one of the miradours. What I loved most is the staff — from the reception to the kitchen and cleaning, everybody was really nice and helpful. S/o to the crazy kitchen lady and Mathilde ♥️ breakfast was also generous

Absolutely amazing staff: special thanks to Martin, super nice guy. I’ve stayed there twice during my stay in Lisbon, before and after I went to Sintra. Both times I had a nice experience! They include breakfast, there is a lounge area to have drinks while listening to a DJ (loved his music), you can go to the restaurant: highly recommended. Good quality food and incredible desserts. If you have the included breakfast, bear in mind that it’s mostly flour: toasts, croissants and pieces of cake. There was also some cheap fruit. They add cheese, ham and butter. Then the coffee it’s not the best (they offer good quality coffee paying on the side) and no eggs included. Also had to paid extra for that. So if you are going for healthy, you’d need to buy extra stuff. I am taking a star from them because also there were problems with the lock keys of the bedroom (they wouldn’t work sometimes so you had to go back to the desk to ask for another one), and one day the lock broke with two people inside. We had told them the door handle was off two days prior, and they waited for it to break to actually do something about it. Also, apparently the rules regarding noise are not quite stablished: I had two people I’m my bedroom that would have alarms at 5am. They turned on the lights of the bedroom 3 times (not the individual ones) and would speak loud as if no one was sleeping there. I don’t know if they worked early or what was going on. But they woke everyone in the room for 2 nights in a row.

I loved my stay in The Independente. The location is great, as is the staff and the design and athmosphere of the hostel. I liked that even though they had their own restaurant, there was still a guest kitchen you could use as well. The free breakfast was absolutely amazing and on par with some great paid offers in other hostels. The lady in charge of the breakfast was especially amazing. She was kind, funny and a little bit sassy. Other staff was great as well, but I was incorrectly told by one of them that detergent was included in the washing machine, which it wasn't (made my clothes smell funky instead of clean). My room was great, but during my stay way too cold. Even though we had them change it warmer it didn't really improve. Also, the middle bunks are uncomfortable to get into. Besides, the bed makes a lot of noise at every move. My bedding was too tight and came loose from the mattress multiple times a night. The light didn't work so we had to really on the bedside lights. The showers were okay and had shower gel included but I didn't like the lack of private dressing area. There is quite some mold in the men's bathroom at floor 2. All in all a great stay and I would definitely return.

  • 4/5 Jeremy B. 1 year ago on Google
I stayed in one's of the triple bunk rooms with 10 other friends. It was fun but the rooms are pretty minimal and the bunks have some dangerous stairs to climb, particularly if you've had a few beers! Building is nice though and has a basic bar to chill in the evening. Breakfast is very basic, have to pay for cooked eggs, but very cheap. Place is good for a large group of a cheap stay on the move.

  • 4/5 james p. 1 year ago on Google
We arrived early, they took out bags and kept them safe, when we came back to actually check in the room was still not ready, a slight Inconvenience. The staff were nothing but friendly, giving us recommendations of things to do around Lisbon. The room was clean and had good air-conditioning. If you are on top bunk you will have to do some climbing, not all the rooms seem to have hand rails either. The breakfast in the morning was lovley and there was lots of options. The major draw back was the showers, although there were plentiful (4 per floor for the men's bathroom) they were tight with no real place to leave your change of clothes. All in all a very good value stay and I would highly recommend.

A pretty hostel, but not particularly a social one. The hostel is more like a boutique hotel with a hostel inside and a living room + kitchen area where people can hang out together if they want. The hostel doesn't organize any social events but can hook you up with tours, etc. I did meet some nice people though and even the staff were quite nice. Unfortunately, the 12-bed room had 3-story bunk beds that would vibrate each time someone passed by. People in the rooms weren't that mindful with each other, but that's not the hostels fault. The mattress was saggy, and in the weekday mornings there was loud construction outside. Bring your earplugs and you shall be okay! I had a good time!

One of the best hostels I’ve stayed at. Firstly, the hostel is in a great location. The hostel is very clean, and the breakfast selection in the morning is great as well. I travelled to Lisbon to visit a friend initially and later stayed on as a Solo traveller. I would recommend this place to groups and couples as well as there is a lot of space in the common rooms where people can relax. Finally, the staff were great and very helpful. I would like to thank the staff member who tried to help me get tickets for the Benfica game, I really appreciate it.

Clean, nice and very affordable! The location is excellent if you. I stayed only for one night, but could definitely have stayed for a few more and feel comfortable enough for the price.

  • 5/5 WeAreBraveTo 1 year ago on Google
Hands down the most luxurious and clean hostel I’ve ever stayed in. Breakfast is unreal for being a hostel. Lourdes (who is the breakfast mama of the house) is just so amazing - you’ll now what I mean once you stay there. And big thx to Antonio as well for being so kind and helpful during my stay. Comfortable sleep, clean showers and toilets and a beautiful, old yet well maintained building in a sick location of Lisboa as well. The only BUT would be: it might not be the easiest place to meet people if you’re traveling alone as I was myself, since there’s this luxurious vibe to it. It does attract many remote workers and people on holiday. But that’s about it. I loved it. See you defiantly again!

Another place I loved several years ago and went back now, only to find out that this one too has suffered from the explosive growth in tourism and immigration. They claim to be open all day, but first have to print out an afternoon menu at 5pm, then forget to come back and ask for the second drink I badly needed with the dry steak sandwich and stale chips... Service is nice, but clearly not managed well.

  • 5/5 Leonardo B. 1 year ago on Google
I have been there in two different bookings, and I just loved this place. The location is very convenient and what about the staff? Ana and Lourdes are true stars! It felt like I was talking with long time friends! Whenever I'm back in Lisbon, for sure I will be back.

  • 5/5 Lauren A. 1 year ago on Google
Really enjoyed my stay here and was sad I could only stay for 1 night! Design of space is gorgeous and the private room I was in was nice, comfortable and well-designed. Was on the more expensive side for what I paid for a private room, but felt worth it. Everyone on staff was so friendly! Rooftop has an amazing view and the restaurant was delicious for both the dinner I had there and the included breakfast. Appreciated the earplugs as there was some street/bar noise, but nothing you wouldn't expect from being in a busy city. If I go back to Lisbon I'll stay again!

Incredible stay in the centre of Lisbon! A 5 minute walk away from Rossio station with an incredible viewpoint of the city outside the building. Staff was incredibly welcoming and accommodating. Rooms were clean and spacious (even staying in a 9 person room) and had great views of the city. Would definitely recommend.

A excellent place to stay in Lisbon! Details: The location is perfect for Lisbon. the party places in Bairro Alto are literally a few steps away and with the funicular/elevator (which is part of the inexpensive public transport, get at least the 24h ticket, see pic) which is another few steps away it is an easy ride to downtown Lisbon. Very cool when you go up with it and thus avoid the very steep ascent to Bairo Alto. Or you take the tram which stops in the front of the house. The suites are individually styled rooms with good atmosphere in a historical building. Everything is very clean. There is a fantastic view from the rooftop terrace (see pic). Due to COVID-19 the bar up there was out of service but as a hotel guest you could go there any time day and night and take along your own beverage or one from the bar below. There are guests from everywhere in the world staying in the suites and the adjacent hostel which share reception and breakfast room. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The overall atmosphere is really good. When we return to Lisbon we will definitely go there once more!

We stayed three nights in one of the hotel rooms. The room was simple but clean and nice. The location of the hotel was great. Easy to walk to many Lisbon highlights and near great food. The breakfast was amazing - good selection and plenty to eat. It was also nice to be able to get a drink at the bar before dinner. Staff were very nice and so helpful. We would stay again.

Location is great, place is clean and safe, the staff is super helpful, breakfasts are delicious. One of the employees even let me do an early check in as I was super tired after a sleepless night at the airport. I greatly appreciate that and I totally recommend the place to anyone traveling to Lisbon. And by the way, they give a welcome drink on the house to all their guests, is not that nice???? Thank you guys again, next time I am in Lisbon I am booking with you ❤️
