I'm not much of a museum fan usually but I enjoyed my visit here. We came on a Sunday morning so we we able to enter free of charge. It's possible that we were the first ones through the door so got to enjoy much of our visit without other people around - no noisy kids is always good. There was a decent variety of exhibits, some of which allowed you to interact with them. All very interesting. Lots of toilets on site. Ticket included entry to neighbouring botanical gardens.

I liked this museum. It was a spontaneous visit with a nice surprise: the entrance for museum and garden is free on Sunday. You can easily spent a few hours checking different exhibitions. The only thing that most of them are in Portuguese only( the text is not duplicated in English). Especially I loved the ongoing exhibition with illustrations, sketches and photos from different expeditions.

A great museum with a huge and diverse collection. Wonder through the collection from dinosaurs to minerals. Every time you discover a new room in this massive building. Walk through the drawing from the expedition through the amazon. Worth a visit and good combination with botanical garden.

Loved visiting this museum. My 4 year old loved the exhibitions. It is very large but it can be viewed in a few hours. Children under 10 receive free entry. There are vending machines along the halls and plenty to see.

One of the best mid-size science museums that I've visited. The exhibit of Portuguese landscapes, animals, and culture was really exceptional. The exhibits of original 1800s laboratories, teaching gallery, and specimens were like stepping back in time - well preserved and gorgeous architectural details.

Fantastic! We just stumbled upon it, but in hindsight it was a great destination spot. Very cool! They have tons of different areas for any interest you might have. For example I spent lots of time in the interactive physics area, and my friend spent lots of time in the taxidermy and dinosaurs areas. It's huge.

A really good museum that mixes science, natural history and temporary exhibitions. You can definitely spend hours inside this museum and the price of the ticket especially if you buy it as a combo with the botanical garden is really a good deal. The building itself is also super interesting. This is a place I would definitely recommend when visiting Lisbon!

It is one of the main museums in Portugal, that focuses on science and nature. It is part of the University of Lisbon and the collection includes zoology, anthropology, geology, and botany. The museum history dates back to 1926 and located in an amazing neighborhood in Lisbon, Rato. There are always numerous exhibitions and workshops being held here. The botanical garden is adjacent to it the museum building though it is currently closed. Tuesday-Friday: 10h00-17h00 Saturday and Sunday: 11h00-18h00 Normal Ticket 5€ (6€ including Botanical Garden), Sundays before 14 free entrance.

Its recent public designation, "MUHNAC - National Museum of Natural History and Science", was created in October 2011. This incorporated the former National Museum of Natural History and the University of Lisbon Science Museum, integrating their collections, the historical buildings of the Polytechnic School, the Lisbon Botanical Gardens and, since July 2012, the Lisbon Astronomical Observatory The history of natural history collections in Lisbon began in the Royal Natural Cabinet and Botanical Garden, created in the second half of the eighteenth century, in Ajuda (western Lisbon). It was then housed for a short period in the Royal Academy of Sciences and transferred to the Polytechnic School in 1858, with the denomination of National Museum of Lisbon (1861) and under the administration of the Polytechnic School. The second Botanic Gardens of Lisbon, in the grounds of the Polytechnic School officially opened in 1878. In 1911, with the creation of the University of Lisbon, the Museum was annexed to the Faculty of Sciences. In March 1978 a devastating fire destroyed part of the building of the former Polytechnic School, most of the zoology collection and part of the geology collection. The Faculty of Sciences would eventually move to its current premises in Campo Grande. The Science Museum of the University of Lisbon was created in May 1985, sharing the building with the National Museum of Natural History. Both museums adopted new by-laws in 2003, becoming autonomous from the Faculty of Sciences and under the direct administration of the Rector of the University of Lisbon.

The museum has quite a large collection - it has been collected for more than 250 years. Previously, two organizations were engaged in this: the National Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Science of the University of Lisbon. Then these two museums were merged into this one. There are two floors in the museum, there are usually not very many people. You can go around everything slowly. There are often temporary exhibitions. On Sunday until 14.00 - admission is free, but for some reason the planetarium was closed.

Nice museum however not worth paying for it. Go on Sunday from 10 am to 1pm as the entry it’s free. The museum could be a little more curated. I would also expect more information displayed in English because most of it it’s not. Also surprised how people can touch everything and no sign of security cameras or staff throughout the museum apart from the entrance. Worth mentioning that toilets are very clean.

The museum has lots of different parts. Modern and old. I spent two hours in the museum, good interactive parts of you are going with children. I particularly liked the big room which was a voyage through the landscapes of Portugal. Very cool. Like others have said the temporary exhibits should not just be in Portuguese, this limits the audience. Knocking a star off for this only. Oh and there is no cafe! So make sure you get something before you go in 👍

The National Museum of Science and Natural History has some interesting exhibits from different fields. But overall, this place is average at best for a major museum in an European Capital. Some of the descriptions are only in portuguese. Still, you can spend an hour or two here. The price is okay, you can get a combined ticket including the adjacent botanical garden for 8 euros.

The National Museum of Natural History and Science, affiliated with the University of Lisbon, has been operating to public since 2011 in its current structure. The museum has a very elaborate collection that has been collected for over 250 years, and I must say that they have managed to display this collection in a very impressive way. I recommend you spare a few hours to fully explore their extensive collection. It is also very enjoyable to walk in the Botanical Garden of Lisbon after leaving the museum. Don't hesitate to make time for this walk.

The museum did not surprise me much but it does has some highlights about the nature and science. I really like the photography exhibition which shows how much the passion and connection with nature from the photographer. And there’s a room with installation introducing the nature of Portugal, the digital interactive displays are remarkable. Unfortunately I was so hungry, which I couldn’t walk over the garden which is another part of the place, it seems a nice one.

It's ok. I visited on a sunday morning and the visit was free. For non-Portugese speakers the temporary exhibits are difficult to understand. Some rooms are nearly empty and kind of spooky. The standard exhibits do have information in English. It's an old fashioned place, but it's a nice option to visit on a sunday morning. The Botanical garden is free as well. I don't know what the regular prices are, but I wouldn't spend more than a few euro's on both.

Magnificient museum of zoology and botany. Amazing building and laboratories. It’s huge and so worth visiting! I absolutely loved the drawings of the birds and the eagles and the section about geology with minerals. It’s been such a cool experience and you can’t miss out if you are into natural history. There is also a beautiful butterfly section :)

Fabulous! We weren’t expecting too much because of the cheap entry (€6 which includes access to the botanic gardens) but it was awesome - we were in the museum for three hours. The exhibition on Portugal’s different landscapes and ecosystems was really well done and great to give an insight into the different native species around. There were a number of other great biological exhibits and an interesting hands-on physics laboratory which would be great for kids. Would highly, highly recommend

I don’t know how many employees it took for this place to get such a high rating because it’s truly shocking how bad it is. As you enter you get into what feels like a worn out high school chemistry lab with huge rusty spots on the floor. That is followed by a tiny Dinosaur part where everything is a replica - not a single actual relic. But my favorite part was the room with plastic pens and other cheap items of everyday use proudly displayed as treasures. I was looking for cameras to see if it’s a practical joke.. It’s a European capital museum that a rural high school would be embarrassed of. The only fun part was the interactive physics experiments on the second floor - but even that was clearly from the 70s, is falling apart and unfortunately only had signs in Portuguese. To add insult to an injury, we had a disabled person with us, and the ticket person stared for a long time as if trying to see the disability, then said we needed proof in order to purchase the reduced price ticket for them. Would not go back even if I was the one to get paid for it.

Exciting experience for the whole family. The museum feels in the beginning a bit like an old chemistry and anatomy university. However, there is a lot more to see, so, be patient. The physics department is very interactive. The maths part contains a lot of very educational puzzles for every age. There is also a section about space, dinosaurs, animals, and minerals. Outside is a botanic garden which looks a bit neglected but contains astonishing and rare specimen worth visiting. You can reach the museum with an electric tram. There is a fee but it is comparatively low for what the museum offers.

Very cool museum for science nerds like me and my wife. There’s a nice variety of exhibits including interactive ones. One can easily spend a couple of hours inside. If the weather accommodates, get the combination ticket and stroll about the adjacent botanical garden. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

Very disappointing. I expected more from a "major" museum in the capital of one of the oldest colonial countries of the world... Not to mention a western European EU capital! Behind the impressive palace is a badly curated tiny collection that would be more at home in a high-school lab or small city museum. The museum has horrible lighting, doesn't seem to have any maintenance or repairs and most of the place is locked up. Reminds me of a Kafkaesque government building. The Botanical gardens could be very impressive, but again, lack of maintenance is obvious... The path is broken, loud music from the surroundings unsettled the birds in the morning when I was there, the "garden of senses" was overthrown and the newly inaugurated Hall was closed. Portugal and Lisbon are incredible and worthy of a lot more. The museums need to get more attention, better funding and need to aspire to a higher standard... No reason for this not to be comparable to a Smithsonian or a British museum.

A fantastic museum with some really interesting exhibits, can't understand why it wasn't full of people! We had the whole place nearly to ourselves, it was lovely, and a nice break from all the busy tourist spots, especially in combination with a wander round the beautiful botanic gardens. We really liked the old chemistry lab, was like something from Hogwarts! We ran out of time so didn't see everything, I would love to go back.

Very disappointing museum for such an important city. A lot of temporary exhibitions are just put there without much else or thought to how they relate to one another. Nothing amazing to see and you won't lose much by skipping this altogether. You can save the ticket price and eat more pastel de nata. The botanical garden is okay-ish, it's big but not that much to see. It should be free. A 15/30 min walk is all you need there.

The immersion exhibit upstairs walking you through the different Portuguese landscapes was so cool! I originally went for the botanical gardens, but I am so glad I saw the museum, too! I also really enjoyed the various specimens and the drawing exhibits.

Super interesting museum about crystals, animals and plants, as well as Darwin. Limited exposition about dinosaurs. So hurry up if you want to see them. Botanical garden right next to the museum. Also worthy to check out!

Nice museum with natural History. Some rooms are just there without English explanation, it not should Be like that. I didn't find it so organized as a museum should be.

  • 5/5 Lorenzo De C. 1 year ago on Google
We enjoyed the visit very much. The museum has a range of different departments—especially the historical double-height laboratory and the lecture theatre are extraordinary. Also, the botanical garden is marvellous and well worth a visit. (We didn't realise that there is a combined ticket for the museum and garden – but it is still not very expensive compared to similar museums in other cities)

One of the coolest museum experiences I’ve ever had. Very detailed with something new and exciting around ever corner. When you thought it was over there was MORE!! A few exhibits were closed which was Saddening but not hindering an awesome encounter.

Very nice museum. If you buy the botanical garden plus museum, it's and extremely accessible price and they have a lot of exebitions for you to enjoy.

lovely museum built on the site of University of Lisbon. Next to the botanical garden and a nice collection of specimen and timeless articles presented in chronical order.

Such a nice museum, and the Botanic garden too is a Must see!

  • 4/5 Arthur G. 2 years ago on Google
Fun visit although not everything was translated in English. There are many different areas in the museum with different themes (animals, minerals, medicine etc). However, if you’re only in Lisbon for a 2 or 3 days, it’s definitely not the main place of interest to see.

  • 4/5 Edgar S. 2 years ago on Google
A good place to visit with your family and friends. You can find a lot of information regarding the wildlife in Portugal. Also you can visit a temporarily exhibits about dinosaurs. It's small, but still amazing. If you love dinosaur, you must visit it.

  • 5/5 Erik S. 2 years ago on Google
I did not expect a lot before entering the museum, but when I came out almost 2 hours later I was really amazed and impressed by the amount of information given, object showed and the various rooms. The museum includes everything remotely related to natural history; from fossils to medicin, taxidermy to the protuguese landscape, anthropology, mineralogy and much more. The only downside was that some areas were inaccessible (due to covid?). You can spend here the better part of a day in combination with the garden. Well worth the price. There is no café or restaurant in the museum itself, but there is a friendly coffeestand just within the gates near the ticket office.

  • 5/5 FATIMA ZAHRA B. 2 years ago on Google
Recommend to purchase the museum and the botanical garden ticket. ( 6€ in July 21) There is a Fabrica Coffee Truck, so come early and grab your Flat White or Iced Latte and enjoy the Garden ( not sure it’s allowed in the museum) Museum: Overall I enjoy the museum. The first room was about stones and unfortunately only in Portuguese. Visually satisfied. Use the Google Picture translator. Botanical Garden: most trees/ plants are tagged with a description. Very peaceful! The National Museum of Natural History and Science in Lisbon, Portugal is the country's main museum focusing on nature. Established in 1926, the museum functions under the University of Lisbon. Its rich collections, gathered over more than 250 years, span zoology, anthropology, geology and botany.
