A very beautiful place to room around with the sea on one side, all monuments on the opposite side, fabulous restaurants on one side & multiple tangerine trees on the side. You can see multiple boats & birds too. Excellent place to spend your lunch time. 😍😍😍

Beautiful sun-filled plaza for exploring, having lunch and seeing the beautiful coastline by Lisbon. A definite go-to spot for any tourist, and a perfect spot for taking photos. One of my favourite places

The plaza is definitely worth seeing when in Lisbon. The gates and statues themselves are impressive, but there's also a great waterfront view. You can even step down into the water, making sand castles along the patches of sand and cooling off from the sun. We spent a bit of time just enjoying the water and scenery; it's a very peaceful way to spend time in Lisbon. Overall, I'd highly recommend visiting!

Lovely public square. Open 24 hours. We went there at 9 PM and walked around till almost midnight. There are musicians playing lovely songs and lots of people, young and old, dancing under the columns. Really lovely atmosphere overall.

It's located right next to the harbour. Wonderful place to walk around, take river cruise, have food or simply relax near the shore. Though it's very crowded some time, but there is enough room for everyone. We visited it during day and night. Both the time it felt different. Would love to visit it again.

A central landmark with some restaurants surrounding it. However the best spot to be isn’t the plaza itself but anywhere along the sea front. A great place to hang out especially during the evening.

A must see in Lisbon and it doesn't feel crowded as it is such a spacious square. Easily accessible by metro or other public transport. Make sure to walk through the arc as it is just as beautiful from below and the other side.

This is the square you see on most Lisbon travel ads, postcards, etc.... Once the site of the Royal palace, it was totally devastated by the 1755 earthquake. It is Marquis de Pombal - great Portuguese statesman who's responsible for its today's appearance (as well much of Lisbon), who took care of rebuilding the capital. Square is huge (apparently the biggest in Europe) and very beautiful - lined on three sides with Ministries and state arched edifices, while the southern side is open to the Tagus river. In the middle is the equestrian statue of King Jose, king of that time (1750). Great place to make terrific pics and cool down by the river with terrific views. The square is also a central transport hub, as many tram, bus and subway lines stop here. Just avoid the restaurants around, as they're highly touristic.

To rate Praça do Comércio is like to rate the Eiffel Tower in Paris, for both, in a way, are more than emblematic to the image of a city. Praça do Comércio is one of the very familiar and common images that come to mind when Lisbon is mentioned, along with the old neighborhoods of Alfama and Mouraria, tramways, and Rossio Square. Our personal impression of the majestic square wasn't that of utter excitement. The design of the square is a "forced" one, meaning that the overall layout that has been progressing throughout centuries is gone, razed to the ground by the 1775 earthquake. In the absence of the magnificent Ribeira Palace and other important buildings such as Casa da Índia, the square feels too gigantic and too deserted. The images of the pre-1775 square can be found through reproductions of the contemporary engravings from XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries, and on the modern ceramic tile mural ("azulejos") at the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, in Alfama. To our taste, the sheer enormous scale of the landmark just doesn't feel as warm or inviting as several other squares in Lisbon, and even less "human" than, say, the nearby Praça do Município. The central piece of the square, the horse statue of José I de Portugal, the king of Portugal, on whose watch the earthquake happened and whose efforts initiated the massive rebuilding of the city, is very interesting. Note an elephant on the eastern side of the pedestal. Elephants served as a symbol of the great overseas discoveries of the Portuguese empire, with some of them remaining forever in history (one, Hanno, was gifted in 1514 to Pope Leo X, and the other, Suleiman, was sent to the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II, 37 years later). The latter served as a "hero" of the 2008 book The Elephant Journey, by the greatest Portuguese modern writer José Saramago, the winner of the Nobel Prize in literature. A stylized elephant footprint can be seen today by José Saramago's foundation, less than 5 minutes' walk from Praça do Comércio. At the northern side of the square, Arco da Rua Augusta shouldn't be missed. Even though, strictly speaking, not being a part of Praça do Comércio, Cais das Colunas, a small riverfront pier with two columns, or pillars, and marble steps, usually half-covered by water, served as the noble entrance into the city, through which kings, queens, heads of state and other official "celebrities" have arrived. The site definitely merits a quick stop. At the western side of the square, the corner of Praça do Comércio and Rua do Arsenal, look up to discover a plaque commemorating the assassination of Carlos I, the 44 year-old King of Portugal, who was killed by terrorists at this spot, together with his 20 year-old heir apparent, Luís Filipe, Prince Royal of Portugal. Of course, all around the square, under the arcades, there are cafes, restaurants, wine cellars, tourist and visitors centers, sightseeing companies outposts, etc.

Spacious, nicely built square in the heart of Lisbon, surrounded by spectacular buildings and monuments. It offers a beautiful, wide-angle view of the Tagus River. It is worth watching during the day and in the evening. It is easily accessible from St. Jerome’s Monastery by tram nr. 15.

Downtown Lisbon in the town square area. A delightful mishmash of small streets, steep stairs, cobblestone alleys, and unique store fronts. These fantastic sculptures were all over the area. You could easily spend days walking around the town and still not experiencing even a hint of what Lisbon has to offer.

A nice place for a sundowner. Pros: 1. Waterfront is very good - walkways, place to sit down, performances on Sundays 2. Many cafes in and around the area Cons: 1. Finding a parking space is tough, dump the car if possible 2. Beware of pickpocketing

Nice lively plaza facing the Tagus river. We'd visited on Christmas eve, so, many places were closed but it was still bustling.

Very nice place right on the water as a prelude to the lively Rue Augusta. All in all, a unique and incomparable urban situation. Partly, of course, the place is also very popular with tourists. Accordingly, there are numerous cafés and bars here.

Nice square with king Statue. Lots people around here, busy spot. Lots young people here, The sand is nice soft, sallow, beautiful beach view. You also can see the Big JESUS statue and the Bridge. My kids stay here nearly 2hours because of the sand sculptures.

It was less crowded than Rua Augusta so I was able to take many nice pictures specially when it was night. It's next to the sea so you can actually enjoy both views at the same time. Many restaurants are available as well on both sides of th status. Tram station is right in front of it.

A beautiful main square with touching historical significance. We joined a walking group and an awesome guide that provided breakdown of how Commerce Square played a role in the revolution (notably being used as a meeting place and had a radio song as a code to when to meet there). It is expansive and stunning. It is right along the water and is teeming with shops and restaurants along the periphery of the grounds. A must see in Lisbon!

Nice place to visit. It was home to Lisbon’s Royal Palace until the earthquake brought it to the ground on 1755. The palace now stands elsewhere, and this historical palace has been restored with ornate arches. You can enjoy an amazing view of the River Tagus standing from that spot.

Beautiful square in Lisbon where as far as I am concerned the city comes together. From this square you can easily walk into the historic center, along the water or towards Alfama. The square is always lively, nice to sit or eat at one of the restaurants.

This is a beautiful place, the entire city is so full of gorgeous architecture and history. The have a huge Christmas tree near the arch, which I didn't know you can go inside and cling to the top. They also have some sculptures in different parts of the plaza. There are mini tours for sale that would take you around historical places in small vehicles.

It was a plaza where performances and outdoor cafes came together. It's romantic because it's located right next to the sea. If the weather is nice, it will be very beautiful.

Stunning square one of the most beautiful that I visited. Stunning architecture all around with view across the river. Lots of nice places to eat (a bit more pricey but you're paying for the location) and a great little museum called the Lisbon Story Centre...which gives the history of Lisbon with a focus on the Praca do Comercio.

Very important historical landmark with beautiful architecture and history. Next to the water with several picture spots. It is well cared for, clean and lots of bus and tram connections with a metro stop 5 minutes away, easy to get to on foot and by transit. You must visit on your trip to lisbon

A nice big open square with very nice architecture and buildings on both sides. We found the square a bit empty in terms of activities. Apart from taking photos, there was nothing else that we could do. On closer inspection, some buildings require maintenance to upkeep their appearance. The restaurants didn't have too many diners either. We picked up a cod fish cake with cheese filling at one of the shops for €6.50. We noticed afterwards that it was considered pricey.

Terrifically empty square in the heart of old Lisbon, with views up the main high street and into the bay. Surrounded by interesting (allegedly) shops and sparsely marked with curious statues and monuments, it’s a worthy place for a few photos, a quick rest of the old legs, or some delightful people watching.

Beautiful. Best time to come -- after sunset, there will be lots of street artists and crowd. At 9 PM, less people, good for taking night view photo. Morning time in September day time just purely too warm.

If you are in Lisbon for the first time, this is a place to visit. I suggest taking a walking tour so you can make it a learning experience, work out (quite a few hills), and meet people at the same time. We took a city center free walking tour with Takefreetour. (Pedro was very knowledgeable, you tip tourguides at the end of the tour). We also did a free walking tour through Alfama. They are both very interesting with lots of story and history. We did these tours at aft/eve, more enjoyable this way. They have tours in different languages.

This square is commonly known by the locals as Palace Square. This huge open space was the site of the royal palace for 400 years. Nowadays the spacious arcaded buildings are converted administrative offices such as Lisboa Welcome Centre, Lisboa Story, gallery, restaurants and shops. Triumphal arch and the statue of King José I dominate the square,so it's also known as Black Horse Square. There are some interesting modern statues erected here. Impressive and popular place for cultural events and festivals as well as just for an enjoyable stroll around the pier.

It's one of my fav parts of Lisbon to come and chill. The sunset view here is great. Be aware of your surroundings, just like any other major European city you have a share of pickpockets in vicinity, and also some lads trying to sell you stuff, they usually don't push but it can be a bit annoying sometimes.

The historic center of Lisbon is wonderful, with its monuments, history, in the streets there are wonderful terraces where wines, liqueurs, sweets and typical Portuguese dishes are served, the Portuguese are very kind and gentle...it is worth visiting.

A lovely square to walk around. I lived around when having my holidays at Lisbon. Great location - close to a lot of attractions and when it was sunny the view is really open and nice. It is also at a great transportation area, loads of shops, restaurant and bus station near by! The most amazing part is that it is so close to the river and you could enjoy the stunning view!

What I would consider to be Lisbon’s main square is beautiful and historic. If you’re there and it’s hot make sure to bring a hat and sunglasses! Be wary of the cafes and restaurants around the square, the prices are very obviously knocked up because of tourists

The largest and most famous square in Lisbon is located near the Tagus river and is a work of reference the pombaline reconstruction. The Praça do Comércio was rebuilt in the eighteenth century, after the earthquake of 1755, and was previously called the Palace Square which housed the royal palace. At the time of discovery, between the fifteenth and sixteenth century, this was the center of life of Lisbon and its gateway to the sea

Beautiful square perfect place for great photos. You can walk down to the sea area on the other side of the road and get a good view of the Christ redeemer statue and the bridge in the distance. Be careful drug dealers trying to sell you drugs as it’s everywhere and don’t go near them.
