Amazing structure at ground level, and wonderful view from the top. I suggest buying Lisbon card if you plan to visit many sights of the city, in this way entrances to certain attractions are either free or with great discount. At ground level there is also the museum about the plans and expansion of Belem part of the town.

Very interesting place. There is an entrance to the top of the monument. As of May 2022, the ticket is six euros. I recommend going to the top. The view from there is incredible. You can see the bridge on one side, and another side is the tower and palace across the road.

It is a fun little 20-minute thing. If there is no line, I recommend it. If there is a line, then maybe not. It really wasn't busy when we went, so we were able to get a good view of everything, so the price to get in was worth it. The museum at the basement level is really informative and cool also!

On top of the monument, you can get a great view of the Tagus river on South side, and the St. St. Jeronimos monastery on the north side. Moreover, You can also see the Belem Tower on the west side, and April 25th bridge on the east side. There's not a lot of space on top of this monument, but it is the highest point above all the surroundings. So you have an unobstructed view of Lisbon's most iconic landmarks. And the monument itself is and architectural marvel as well. If you have the chance to take a boat tour, the view of this monument from the river is the best.

Don’t pay for the visit to the top. The view is cool and the 5 stars is for the sculptures and time it took to build the landmark. That said, it is not worth the cost of the elevator ride to the top. The fact it is right on the river and pays homage to the trade ships is pretty amazing.

As a tourist, I would say this is the place you can't miss. The line is short, entrance fee is 10 Euro or 8.3 Euro if you have a Lisboa Card. When you went down, directly go -1 for the history museum. Best sky view in that area. I got several good photo on the river cruise trip for the whole building.

The Monument is spectacular. It's beautiful from every angle. The detail in the faces and hands on the people on the statue is beautiful. The area is along the waterfront. This is a must-see. There is a lot to see in the immediate area. There was a line to go to the top. I didn't want to wait. The views from below were magical.

I was expecting it to be a little cheesy or kitschy, but it is actually quite impressive, especially during sunset when we arrived. The oversized figures and the shape of the monument itself, a giant stone ship blowing into the mouth of the river, and the gigantic stone sword attached to the back all combine into a sort of post modern, maybe you could even say neo-Mannerist, type of monument, which is playful and monumental at the same time—it certainly has an unexpectedly powerful effect due to its sheer size and breathtaking location.

52 metres tall, this monument commemorates the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator, who discovered the Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde. The Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument to the Discoveries) stands 170 Ft (52 m) tall. This stunning monument was designed to commemorate the Age of Discoveries in Portugal. It was inaugurated in 1960, on the fifth centenary of one of the country’s great discoverers, Prince Henry the Navigator, who discovered the Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde. The tribute is located on the coast of Belém, near Lisbon and is also very close to other important sights like Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery. The Monument to the Discoveries is made up of a group of sculptures that represent the prow of a caravel (a small sailing ship constructed by the Portuguese to explore the Atlantic Ocean). Leading the ship is Prince Henry the Navigator and behind him are many other great Portuguese discoverers.

We had a perfect sunny clear day to visit this area. We found parking nearby parking lots. We walked around the monument and you can also buy a ticket to see the inside of the monument. Lots of history. I had seen this monument in one of the Rick 's Steves visit to European Travel and learned a lot of the history of the monument and the history of Portugal. Check it out in person you will enjoy.

Very cool looking monument that you have to check out. The size alone is crazy and up close it’s even crazier. I didn’t go inside due to lack of time but it might be worth checking out. Definitely visit the outside though

Standing proudly at the edge of the Tagus River, the Monument to the Discoveries is a tribute to Portugal's age of exploration. Its towering presence and intricate sculptures celebrate the intrepid spirit of those who charted new worlds. The panoramic views from the top provide a remarkable perspective of the river and the city. The monument's shape evokes the prow of a ship, symbolizing the nation's maritime prowess. It's not just a sculpture; it's a commemoration of Portugal's journey into the unknown. Visiting this landmark, you can't help but be inspired by the audacity of those who once set sail from these shores, and you're reminded of the enduring legacy of their courage and curiosity

Definitely a must visit monument in Lisbon. It is so beautiful with a nice concept. It's also a perfect place to see the sunset. You can pay a fee and take the elevator. There's is also a very big and beautiful map of the world on the ground with all the years and the expeditions of the Portuguese.

If you are in Belem and have already visited the Belem Tower, suggest you walk along the river to this monument devoted to Portugals explorers. There’s a better view to the bridge from here and also quite an interesting little square with a map showing all the Portuguese colonial prowess of the past. You can finish exploring the area by visiting the Jeronimos monastery or at least admire its architecture which we did as it was closed for a day.

Great views of Lisbon from the top! Impressive structure with figures from history carved into the side. Definitely the best way to see the map on the ground below! It is a must see when visiting Lisbon, especially on a clear and calm day!

I recently had the chance to visit the Monument to the Discoveries, and it left an indelible impression on me. To be honest, I was initially unsure of what to expect from a monument, but this one exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I laid eyes on it, I was struck by the sheer grandeur of the monument. It stands tall and proud by the waterfront, and its design is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The imposing figure of Henry the Navigator, the great Portuguese explorer, stands at the forefront, as if beckoning you to embark on a journey of discovery. The intricate details on the monument are a testament to the craftsmanship of the artists and sculptors involved. As I walked around it, I couldn't help but admire the intricate carvings that depicted various explorers, sailors, and cartographers who played pivotal roles in the Age of Discovery. It's a true work of art. What truly sets this monument apart, though, is the feeling it evokes. Standing there, looking out over the river, you can't help but feel a sense of wanderlust and adventure. It's as if the monument itself is a call to explore the unknown, to venture into uncharted waters, just as those brave souls did centuries ago. The location of the monument is perfect. It overlooks the river, offering breathtaking views of the water and the surrounding area. It's an excellent spot for a leisurely stroll or to simply sit and contemplate the history it represents. In conclusion, the Monument to the Discoveries is not just a piece of architecture; it's a testament to human curiosity and the unquenchable thirst for exploration. Whether you're a history enthusiast, an art lover, or simply someone looking for a spot to reflect, this monument is a must-visit. It's an experience that will stay with you long after you've left its inspiring presence.

It's ok. From far away it looks like a large honk of concrete, only when you get closer do you discern a shape of a ship. The crowd of conquistadors and explorers that line the deck is probably the most interesting thing about this monument. Free to view, of course.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos is a monumental tribute to Portugal's Age of Discovery. Its impressive design and historical significance make it a must-visit attraction for tourists exploring Lisbon's maritime heritage. Can visit free of charge. If you want to go inside need to take a ticket.

I would suggest going to the top of the monument for sure. It's a bit pricey at 10 Euros per person but the views are really good from the top. Please note that you need to walk the last floor up as the lift takes you to the 6th floor only. We also got to enjoy an arts exhibition at -1 floor which was about propaganda exhibitions in Europe between 1934 and 1940 and which I found to be very informative. I would rather go here than some of the other monuments in Belem for sure.

Padrão dos Descobrimentos = meaning a Monument of the Discoveries >is surely one of the interesting Monumental Structure erected along the side of the Tagus River in Lisbon. Unfortunately, It was only a short glance to see this monument while passing thru the main road with our Tourist Bus. Not only the architectural design was fascinating but also the history behind all these famous navigators who made there great discoveries all over the world! Inside this building are auditorium, multimedia exhibiting the history of Lisbon, a stage with film projector and the uppermost part can be reached by elevator to see the wide view of the River and some other historical landmarks. I was amazed and wish to come again to enjoy seeing these work of art in my next visit. It's in my Bucket Lists of Travel :-)

Great to look at and get pictures, while walking along the strip and taking on the views. Can be very busy around it with lots of people sitting near it and having a rest. It is a bit of a distance from the centre so you need to take a uber, taxi, or get a train.

Kind of a cool monument, and worth seeing. Packed with tourists when I went, but easily reacheable on foot from Belem tower along the water and around a small marina (bit of a walk though, maybe a third of a mile?). Because it was so packed i didn't go up.

A huge structure with figures from the extensive history from the days of Portugal as an Empire. Part of the "route" that every tourist does in the Belem district. Too bad there is no other tourist activity around. In front of the building there is a world map depicting the conquests of Portugal around the 16th century

When we first arrived there the weather was rainy and windy. The staff was very kind to tell us that it’s an open space on the top and suggested us think about it before we bought tickets. So we did not go up. However, the monument itself is magnificent and the sculptures on the two sides are different.

The monument is a totalitarian landmark that is a must-visit during your stay in lisbon. There is an exhibition in the basement for those who buy a ticket to the top. There is an elevator to the top, but you can also take the stairs if you feel up for the challenge. There are wonderful views from the rooftop, where you can also gaze at the mosaic and crowds on the plaza below

You can only see it good from the side of the see or not really good from the other side of the land. Padrão dos Descobrimentos, or the Monument to the Discoveries, in Lisbon, Portugal, is a tribute to the country's Age of Discoveries. Built in 1960, it stands as a striking monument symbolizing Portugal's maritime legacy. The structure showcases figures of key explorers, navigators, and leaders, led by Prince Henry the Navigator. With its intricate carvings and historical significance, Padrão dos Descobrimentos serves as a reminder of Portugal's influential role in global exploration. The story is nice and also the all zone

The monument of discoveries is well worth a visit in my opinion. This monument located on the bank of the Tagus river celebrates Portuguese discovery. The architecture of this monument is fantastic and even has a viewing gallery on the top with great views across the city. It is located in the Belém area of Lisbon, so you will probably be visiting all the other attractions that this area has to see anyway. It is also nice to walk along the river via the marina to Belém Tower from this location. The monument is free to explore at ground level, but if you want to go inside to access the viewing gallery then there is a cost (not expensive). All of the stone floor in front of the monument were a gift from South Africa and you can see a world map of all the places (with dates) that the Portuguese went over time.

Entry fee was 10 euros, the waiting time depends. I waited 20 min and it was on a Sunday. Has some stunning views on the top, but it's not that big area which it may be uncomfortable if its crowded. This stunning monument was designed to commemorate the Age of Discoveries in Portugal. It was inaugurated in 1960, on the fifth centenary of one of the country's great discoverers, Prince Henry the Navigator, who discovered the Azores, Madeira, and Cape Verde.

(Translated by Google) It is perhaps the best known monument in Lisbon, if only for its size as well as its conformation. In fact, depending on the angle in which one is, it can remember a ship, and being adjacent to the Tagus it is plausible; moving slightly, the figure of a man carved in stone appears, but advancing a little further a group of other people gradually smaller takes shape who seem to scan the horizon or ... the future. Surrounded by a palette of bright colors, from the blue of the water to the green of the lawns, passing through the soft pavement.

Commenced in 1939 by Portuguese architect José Ângelo Cottinelli Telmo, and sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida, as a beacon during the Portuguese World Exhibition opening in June 1940. The Monument to the Discoveries represented idealization of the Portuguese exploration. on the shores of Tagus river.

A particularly beautiful monument which is an icon when you visit Lisboa. Very nice pictures can be made here and then you can walk to the Torre de Belém which is very close. The Centro Cultural de Belém is on the opposite side of the street. A must see when you are in the city

This monument is located on the northern waterfront of Tagus River. It was inaugurated in 1960, and was dedicated to the age of discoveries in the heydays of the Portuguese Empire. Belem Tower is nearby (12 minutes walking), so is MAAT, the Architecture Museum (20 minutes walking) The waterfront itself is a perfect area for walking or having a drink of the many cafes that are located along it.

A vision of art. Take the train, walk, or bike from Docas docks. Either way, the breeze, water views, restaurants, and sites along the way satisfies your tourist needs. Museums, palaces and gardens on both sides of the street such as MAAT and Belem tower close by.

We was just for one night in Lisbon. So we decided to go on the next morning to the attraction around us. I had a Portuguese Person with me so was really beautiful the explanation he did to me. I’m quite impressed of this amazing stonework. On the floor and the statue. This Place on the Port was really nice and worth to see. 🌞

Monument of Discoveries is an imposing monument on the river. Recognizing those who represented the Age of Discovery the monument is over 170 ft tall with 33 statutes of explorers, sea captains, monarchs, and traders. In the front facing the ships as they go by is Henry the Navigator.

My trip to explore Belem is one of my favorite experiences of Lisbon. The exquisitely detailed monument honoring past explorers faces out to the ocean, with a view of the look-alike Golden Gate Bridge in the backdrop and sail boats going by.

Beautiful monument in honor of the Portuguese maritime explorers. There is also a large historical map on the ground of over 20 meters that show key expeditions over the years by prominent portuguese sailors. I couldn't get a photo as many people were standing on it. The monument itself if beautiful and you can get a shot of the bridge in the background

Nice tower with a lot of history. I would recommend to book a sailing trip with get your guide - you can see the tower from the water and they will tell you all about the tower and it‘s story.

Very cool monument by waterfront in Lisbon. Interesting architecture and history. Views are great from up top, lift is useful and good exhibit down at bottom too. Reasonable price.

We did actually go there with the intent of riding the elevator 🛗 to the top. However, we were too late, so had to make do with the look from the ground, and the surroundings, all also very impressive. If you're late like ourselves, maybe just grab a glass of wine and enjoy the sunset 🌇

Very beautiful and mighty monument. Lot of history and significance. There’s a ticket counter inside and an elevator inside with which you can go to the top and get the complete view of the city. Totally worth it. Highly recommended place to visit

  • 5/5 Bruna U. 11 months ago on Google
Impressive monument for its size and design. The view from the top is breathtaking, I think it's worth paying the lift to go up. If you are afraid of heights maybe you should skip that. I don't really like the word "discovery" when we talk about the colonization of lands that were already populated. Nevertheless, that's a nice spot to reflect on the country's and the world's history.

Just a few meters away from Belen tower, a beautiful monument, highly recommended to visit, go all the way up for the view!!. You can buy tickets online or at the door, tickets do not skip the line. Elevator takes you to almost the top, you need to go through a narrow stair to go to the top, there are bathrooms in the monument, and a few vending machines as well

Monument to the Discoveries is situated on the bank of Tagus river, close to the Belem tower. We only visited it from outside which was good enough to observe the monument. The location of the monument is quite nice and has very peaceful surroundings. We saw the monument in the evening while taking the river cruise and during the day while visiting the Belem tower. It's really beautiful and special. Must visit place in Lisbon.

Wonderful place! This is just a magnificent piece of art and to top it there is a beautiful view over the Belém Area. There are some history exposition at the bottom floor. Still the best thing is the view. Kids under 12 don't pay. Adults is 10€.

Cool monument to how the Portuguese just set off around the world on discovery expeditions. Amazing how far and wide they went using sails! I need google maps to get me to my local shop! Did not do the lift but that is an option.

Great view of the ocean, bridge and city from the top. really nice details on the sides of this building too. Worth the money to go up via the elevator compared to Belem tower as this has a shorter line and a nice small Museum in the basement.

The monument of the discoveries is a very beautiful monument for the age of exploration of the Portuguese. The monument can be best appreciated from a distance such that you can see all the parts of the monument. The monument represents the front of a Portuguese caraval ship with sails with on top of the boat many explorers. The explorer in the front is Henry the navigator, the other people are important people from this time like monarchs and scientists. It is quite busy around the monument.

This monument is absolutely massive. It doesn't open until 10am, but I think the outside is best experienced at sunrise. You can pay to go inside and look from the viewing platform, but it's not necessary to the experience.

A beautiful grand monument that we visit countless times be it day or night ... Its grandeur, both physical and symbolic, is phenomenal. Indeed the Age of Discovery by the Portuguese of past is truly remarkable and glorious. Something all Portuguese can be very proud of. The waters and expanse of space provides a very nice backdrop to this Monument of Discoveries. My Salute! 🫡

Gorgeous monument that is a short walk from the Belem tower. We visited here because the wait to get into Belem was over 2 hours while here was 2 minutes. There’s not much inside but the view was beautiful and about 100 feet higher than you’d get in Belem.

Crowded but beautiful. Beautiful wharf with abundant yachts. Still away from the bustle of the other touristic spots. Did not go up to view from the top. Tickets needed to do that.

The Padrão dos Descobrimentos or Monument of Discoveries is a massive structure overlooking the Tagus River and celebrates the Portuguese ships that departed this area during the Age of Discovery during the 15th and 16th century. As a modern-day sailor myself, I'm in awe of these explorers that braved the oceans during this time with the technology they had during that time period. Much respect, Portugal 🇵🇹 🙌

Beautiful monument facing the water. Very detailed architectural structure. In front there is a huge circle with the world. At the monument there are people selling handcrafts made of cork, very pretty and original.

You are literally paying ticket to go with elevator to the last floor and take a picture from the top of the monument. That's it. Not worth of charging any fee for this... The monument is beautiful and the picture you can take from the ground it will not be much different:)
