From the outside, this church may seem slightly boring, but once you go inside you will see the magnificent art it has to offer. Along the sides of the church are these naves which display statues, painting, and gold pieces and a massive painting is shown on the ceiling. I recommend you see this as it is truly beautiful.

This church is absolutely gorgeous! Full of artifacts and relics. I could easily spend hours inside and not see all the amazing art/details. Don't forget to look up and see the murals on the ceiling! It's like stepping into the past!

Beautiful church located in the São Pedro de Alcântara street. The most remarkable piece is the faux ceiling which is worth admiring while sitting on a bench. The plaza outside is also a good place to relax and have a drink

On the outside the church looks really plain but once you get inside there is lots to see. On The left and right hand sides are sections with different features but the stand alone parts are the gold. It’s well worth visiting for even a short time to see the inside.

This is one of the very few churches in Lisbon that will not disappoint, and as a matter of fact, even exceed expectations. The plain white neoclassical shell does not betray the sumptuous baroque interior that's as richly decorated as any church that you'll ever see. The place is dripping with gold leaf and decorations of all kinds. Don't miss this one.

One of the most amazing churches in Lisbon lavishly decorated where you can find one of the most expensive chapels in the world, the chapel of Saint John the Baptist. It was constructed in Rome, blessed by the Pope, dismantled and reconstructed again in Lisbon. The pictures are from a behind the scenes tour where you can access all the areas! My favourite part was getting to see where the paintings in the main altar get changed depending on the liturgical calendar. And also the roof which was the main reason why this church was not destroyed during the infamous 1755 earthquake.

Beautiful church full of treasures. Wonderfully preserved and restored. Super creepy reliquaries with visible body parts of dead people. The museum is worth the few € extra, as it holds the most precious and beautiful world of art. Also, the museum is much quieter and calm than the church. Cliff shop inside the museum. Very calm with interior courtyard.

I visited 7 years ago and still remember the awe I felt. Know that 85% of Lisbon was destroyed in the 1755 quake that was so strong it sent a tsunami to Brazil. This is one of the few buildings to survive that quake, which wiped out over a third of the nation’s wealth and killed tens of thousands. It’s an example of how gloriously wealthy Portugal was before the quake and is an incredible experience to simply sit inside in the silence. Be sure to visit the amazing park behind the church, one of the greatest views of the city. You can take the funicular or walk down to the heart of Lisbon and eventually end your day at Commerce Square for a spellbinding sunset as musicians play for coins.

Beautiful church. Well worth a visit inside and taking your time to explore each of the altars. Is was decorated at Xmas with colourful paper birds which gave an even more splendid feel to the ambiance of it inside. Right in the middle of tourist areas this has not lost its charge and is still a great place for quiet and reflection

Sehr imposante Kirche!

Having visited churches and cathedrals all over Europe, I would say that the Igreja de São Roque (the Church of Saint Roch) is one of the most elaborately decorated. The wooden ceiling is colourfully painted with angels and cherubs and fancy scrolls. The roof painting also includes two fake domes. The main body of the church is completely open, there being no pillars to support the roof. On both sides of the nave there are a series of small chapels deeply recessed into the side walls. These are very ornately decorated with designs heavily carved from wood and then covered with gold leaf or gold paint. This is supplemented with marble and some of the chapels feature large and heavily framed oil paintings. High above these side chapels, large paintings also hang on the walls. The original church on this site was built starting in 1506. It was a shine to host a relic of Saint Roch in the belief that it would protect the people of Lisbon from the plague which was sweeping through southern Europe at that time. In 1555 the church was re-built as the Main House of the Society of Jesus, which had been founded by Saint Ignatius of Loyola in 1534. This was in part a counter balance by the Catholic Church to the austerity advocated by Martin Luther and the Protestants. The elaborate ornamentation of the Jesuit churches is in marked contrast to the simplicity and plain designs of the Protestant churches.  The Church of Saint Roch has been modified and added to many times since 1555, but its decoration is still very rich, impressive and beautiful. One can only imagine how awed were the ordinary people of Lisbon when entering such a building. Visitors can enter the church free of charge. The exit for visitors takes you into the adjacent building which is the Museum of São Roque. There you have the choice to exit back into the street or pay €2.50 to visit the Museum. Entry to the Museum is free on Sundays and free at all times for children up to 14 and adults over 65. It is well worth the modest entry fee and takes about an hour or maybe a little more to see everything. All the exhibits are accompanied by explanations and historical context on adjacent display panels which are printed in Portuguese and English. There are good toilet facilities, free WiFi and a small shop.

The exterior gives away nothing of the riches that lie within. The interior is stunning, an absolute masterpiece on alter craftsmanship. And there are so many of them. My camera would not do them justice, you must visit to see. Highly recommended.

Rich baroque gold-adorned interiors from XVIth century, starkly contrasting to the rather plain facade of the church. St John-Baptist Chapel being probably the most impressive as it was conceived in Rome, then dismantled and re-assembled inside the church.

Don't let the simple ordinary facade fool you. The moment you enter you'll open your mouth in disbelief. Outstanding Church built by Jesuits in the 16c with amazing interior - one of the best we saw on our 7 days Portugal tour. You simply cannot tell which side Chapel is more beautiful (there're 8 of them), as well the amazing altar. Each is well explained in Portuguese/English. Gorgeous painted wooden ceiling.

The Church of São Roque is one of the most famous and historically significant churches in Lisbon. Its construction began in the 16th century and continued until the 17th century. It is also famous for housing the most precious relic of St Roch(protector against epidemics, patron of the sick and travellers), the bone of his upper limb. This makes the church particularly significant for pilgrims and worshippers who come here to honour the saint. Apart from the relics of St Roch, the Church of San Roque collects many other relics of saints. In its collection you can find bones, articles of clothing and other sacred artefacts associated with various saints.

This building, one of the first Jesuit churches in the world, was built in the 16th century. It was one of the few buildings that survived the Great Lisbon earthquake without any damage. I cannot say that the architecture and atmosphere of the church, which also hosts the São Roque Museum today, is noteworthy. It is obvious that it attracts attention with its rich chapels, especially the Capela de São João Baptista. Since the entrance to the church is free, I recommend you visit it by taking it on one of your walking routes in Lisbon. However, it would be best not to expect too much.

Wonderfully decorated church! I love the wooden inlays, the extensive details all over, and it just makes me realize how wonderful the world is. The ceiling is painted with a wonderful rendition of angels and cherubs and is (almost) impossible to capture all with a camera. There's also a paid museum next door.

The Saint Rock Church is a Catholic church in Lisbon, Portugal. It was the earliest Jesuit church in the Portuguese world, and one of the first Jesuit churches anywhere. The edifice served as the Society's home church in Portugal for over 200 years, before the Jesuits were expelled from that country. The square in front of St. Roch is unremarkable, and the exterior of St. Roch makes people feel ordinary, however, the interior of St. Roch is magnificent and splendid. The frescoes on the dome are beautiful and ingenious. The entrance fee is 2.5 EU per person, but If you just take a look at the interior of the church and don't visit it in detail, it's free.

This church is one of the few buildings in Lisbon to have survived the 1755 earthquake. The exterior is extremely simple and unassuming, but if you decide to stop in, expect a sensory assault that will test your faith. You'll discover an intricately decorated interior of frescoes and gilded carved wood. Admission is free. There is also an attached museum that we did not visit. To save yourself some climbing, head to "Glória - S. Pedro Alcântara" to catch the Gloria funicular up from Baixa - free with a Lisboa card and cheap with a Viva Viagem card.

As almost all churches in Lisbon, the outside it's not calling attention, however when you get inside you have a great surprise. The pieces of Holy Art are gorgeous and it's difficult to pain attention to one unique thing, since it's all shinning in gold colors, with beautiful details. In this particular church, you will find amazing art as the Chapel of the Holy Family, a gorgeous statue of Saint Anthony and pain attention to the "Capela da Nossa Senhora da Piedade" ... just breathtaking.

(Translated by Google) CHURCH OF SAN ROQUE DE LISBOA Strolling through the lively Barrio Alto of Lisbon, in the Largo Trindade Coelho, we stop at this beautiful place and observe a curious sculpture. This is the stature of the lottery seller or Cauteleiro, placed to honor this office by the Holy House of Mercy of Lisbon, an institution that manages the state lotteries. As a curiosity, on the seller's cap we see the seller number 000. But what really stands out in this Plaza, although at first glance the facade is rather simple, is the Church of San Roque in Lisbon, finished in 1574, which is one of the best examples of Portuguese Mannerist architecture. It is an interesting visit, in which its wooden ceiling stands out, which is illuminated by various windows. Also the tile and marble surfaces, or the altarpieces of different times and styles. Entering on the right we find the Chapel of Our Lady of Doctrine, that of San Francisco Javier, that of San Roque, that of the Santisimo, that of the Annunciation, that of the Holy Martyrs Relics (Very curious), the impressive High Major , that of the Relics of the Holy Martyrs (Very curious), that of the Holy Trinity, that of the Presepium, the Sacristy, that of the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist, Our Lady of Mercy, that of Saint Anthony, that of the Holy Family, Our Lord two Steps and Our Lady of Fatima and the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Next to the Church is the Museum of San Roque or Sacred Art, which there was no time to visit due to the closing time. Due to the beauty of its images and history, the visit to this Church is very pleasant and surprising, which is why it is recommended.

Worth a visit if you have the time. Make sure to get a guided tour as there is no useful material to explain the history of the church. Unique and interesting altars in church.

So elegant and magnificent. Especially the illusion on the top wall of the church! When you walk straight to the altar and at one point of the line you can see the painting on the top turn 3 dimensional!!

Don't miss this one

It’s a worth to visit even paying the fee, but we don’t need to pay the ticket to enter the church. The museum next to here, it’s 2.5 EUR. It’s a baroque chapel.

Don't let the simple exterior facade fool you. The interior of this church is full of baroque side chapels that epitomize the baroque approach of "more is more, especially when it comes to gilding." While the gilding in some of those side chapels might be the first thing to catch your eye, there are many, many more beautifully-executed visual details, including inlaid stone inspired by Florentine stonework and of course tiles. If you visit on Sunday morning before church services, you may be lucky enough to hear the choir practicing, which highlights the experience. I'm not sure if it's a permanent exhibition or not, but there is a side exhibit of religious relics, very thoughtfully curated and presented to ask questions about the tradition and what a relic means. Very well-worth visiting for anybody interested in the baroque period and its art, or church design.

A fantastic church to visit. The church's outside looks mediocre, but inside is all gold and intricacies. A small but well presented museum is full of relics. A beautiful bamboo courtyard / cafe is most ideal to have coffee and tart after the visit.

Plain outside, gorgeous inside. The interior is very decorative with lots of details, paintings, saints and tombs. Opening at 2pm.

The church is amazing. It is one of the few buildings in Lisbon to survive the earthquake relatively unscathed. It is built in the 16th century.

I am not mad keen on the interior of baroque Catholic churches. But this one is exceptional. Well-documented with interesting information on its Jesuit origins and subsequent history and on the details of each chapel. Stunning ceiling and gilded wood.

We came all the way from the other side of the city to visit the church, which google maps displayed to be open until 7:00 pm, only to arrive at 5:54 pm and find the personnel already outside, not letting us in and telling us the church closed at 6:00pm. It is a shame, also considering how difficult it is to reach for an elderly person, and that no one among the personnel aknowledged the mistake in the website. In addition, it needs to be noted they closed in advance, even if google maps had displayed the right closing time: all the lights had already been shut down, not allowing visitors to even take a look for 30 seconds, within 6:00pm.

One of the most beautiful churches I've ever been in. It's nothing much to look at from the outside, but I was pleasantly surprised when stepped into the church. There are well-preserved ancient relics, including bones from martyrs on display . It's a must-visit when in Lisbon
