It is a beautiful building inside and out, seen from below and above. Gorgeous decorations, works of art painted and carved in stone. The combination of natural light from the dome and the artificial lighting covers the interior in a special mix of colours. The roof offers great views of Lisbon in all directions.

Beautiful old church. When we visited the church, on a Monday around 11.30 in the morning, there was a service ongoing which ended around 12.30. It’s a beautiful church but do not plan a whole afternoon for the visit, it’s not a very big church. There’s an option to burn a candle for € 0,50. Make sure to also visit the park behind the church, absolutely worth the visit.

After years of passing by outside, finally went in and was pleasantly surprised. It is not a giant cathedral, but it has enough of an imposing presence to allow one to appreciate the multiple altars and cruciform architecture. Also a pleasant surprise came in the form of the possibility of climbing to the rooftop from where you can have a look around the area at a very budget friendly price. Just be sure to be away from the belltowers when the full set goes off at, for example, 11:50 on a Sunday morning.

Reach the terrace of the basílica through a weaving staircase to have a lovely view over the city, including the castle, the river and the bridge, Jardim de Estrela and the possibility to see the basílica’s interior from above. Really nice scenic spot with a lot of space and great marble constructions. From the makers of the Mafra Palace ;)

One of the most beautiful churches in Lisbon. It looks fantastic outside and the park in front the church my favorite. Nice interior with color marble everywhere. For 4€ you have a chance to get upstairs to see nice view and it possible to look inside of church from high balcony. But in the same time it is kinda pity that you can’t visit the patio, I would love to see it also. As not religious person, for me it was nice experience to see classic architecture of Portugal.

Visiting this Basilica on January 1st was an excellent way to start the new year. It was very beautiful to view all the statues, architecture and paintings. It was also nice to be able to light two candles - one for my Dad and one for something else. A wonderfully spiritual moment.

The beautiful colors of the church all come of different colors of marble. Blue, green, pink, yellow and grey marbles carefully carved for a harmonious result. The polished marbles shine like jewels. The interior is breathtaking. (Today's prices for blue marble is 2000e/m2), The rooftop was nice, with the bells banging at five a'clock and sun setting in the Atlantic ocean.

The very first Church, in the whole World, dedicated to The Sacred Heart of Jesus! Just Breathtaking! People come here to Adore God! As you enter and look above, you'll see a Beautiful Dome. Sit down and Pray. Ask God's Presence and Receive it! It's There!

(Translated by Google) In the second half of the 18th century, D. Maria I, daughter of King D. José, vowed that she would have a church built if she had a son to inherit the throne. His wish came true and the construction of the temple began in 1779. However, the prince baptized with the name of José, died of smallpox victim in 1790, two years before the end of the construction. The dome-topped basilica, Zimbório, rises on top of a hill in the west of Lisbon, being the first church in the world dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It contains the tomb of D. Maria. I also highlight a large crib, by the sculptor Machado de Castro. The design of the Real Basilica, in Baroque style, is due to the architects of the Mafra School. Attached to the Temple, there was a convent of the Order of the Discalced Carmelites. It can be said that the whole set constitutes a benchmark from the Lapa area in Lisbon.

Impressive creamy white late baroque church with a truly spectacular “terrace” on the roof of the nave, which is like something out of a movie set. Price to climb the spiral stairs is just 3€, and a small door in the dome also gives you a scary view straight down into the church itself—be mindful of the loooooow balustrade and also the electric wires running around the edge of the roof to keep the birds away ⚡️🐥⚡️

This is a very nice church and if you appreciate this type of architectural landmarks then you might want to drop by. I enjoyed my short visit there. Just in front of it there is also a nice garden hence you can combine the two things. The church itself has a couple of small entrances. I didn't managed to walk around it due to people getting ready to a service (I guess) but very good spot.

The church, which was built in the Estrela neighborhood as a dedication by Queen Maria I of Portugal, whose wish for an heir was fulfilled, takes its name from this district. Since it is dedicated to the heart of Jesus, it is also known as the Convent of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The church, which we can call the Baroque style, has a remarkable splendor and a beautiful architecture. The entrance is free, but I can say that the Bema section is viewed from a bit of a distance. There was a fee to access the terrace of the church. Since our visit was in the evening, we could not go to the roof, but I think the view is very beautiful with the Estrela park opposite. I should also point out that the huge dome of the church, located in the hilly part of the neighborhood in the west of Lisbon, can be seen from many points in the surrounding area. If you take a nice route to the church, I think you can enjoy watching this dome until you get close.

Known for the white exterior and dual bell-towers, Basílica da Estrela warrants a brief visit to view Queen Maria's tomb and an impressive pulpit. Less ornate than other churches in Lisbon, there is an outside terrace available for a small fee but the view is fairly limited.

Not too ornate or barroque as it is described, but indeed an interesting visit through the city. I can say that for religious people (I mostly visit churches out of historical curiosity) the place is peaceful and good for a meditation or prayer. The ornaments, statues and architecture are simple, but graceful. What mostly caught my attention was the ceiling, which is beautiful for a church of this size. Worth a visit.

I had the pleasure of visiting the Basilica da Estrela during my trip to Lisbon, and I was deeply impressed by its beauty and spirituality. This magnificent basilica is undoubtedly a gem of architecture and a place worth visiting. The Basilica da Estrela is one of the most impressive churches I have ever seen. Its striking dome towers majestically above the surrounding neighborhood and is visible from afar. The interior of the basilica is as breathtaking as its exterior facade. The intricate decorations, marble columns, frescoes, and magnificent altars create a special atmosphere filled with deep spiritual significance. I was particularly amazed by the precise craftsmanship evident in every detail of the basilica. The intricate carvings and rich embellishments are a testament to the exceptional talent of the artisans who contributed to this masterpiece. It is a place where one can lose track of time and immerse oneself in the beauty of centuries past. The Basilica da Estrela also offers a splendid view of the city of Lisbon. After climbing the spiral staircase, you reach the rooftop terrace, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and the Tagus River. This view alone is worth the visit and invites you to linger, taking in the beauty of the surroundings. In addition to the impressive architecture and wonderful view, I would also like to highlight the peaceful and tranquil atmosphere inside the basilica. It is a place of reflection and retreat, where one can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and find a moment of inner calm. The Basilica da Estrela also holds regular worship services, providing another opportunity to connect with the spiritual aspect of the place. All in all, I highly recommend the Basilica da Estrela in Lisbon. Its splendid architecture, intricate decorations, magnificent view, and serene atmosphere make it an unforgettable experience. Whether you are interested in art and architecture or simply seeking a place of tranquility, the basilica is sure to captivate you.

The building itself is lovely and worth dropping in just to see. We found out that there was an English-language mass here, and so we attended on Sunday morning. Father James Flynn was the head priest when we visited, and he was marvelously hospitable and welcoming. There was a good-sized English-speaking community in attendance as well. We'd visit again if we were in the neighborhood any time soon.

The church is in a quaint neighborhood of Lisbon with the tram 28 stopping right in front. One can visit the roof and the interior of the dome, very nice views from the roof for a 4 euro fee, children under 12 have free admission. It's a nice workout to climb the spiral staircase and beware that on the hour that church bells will ring. The church also features the possibility to see a nativity scene that includes various scenes from the gospel, it's a 2 euro offer to the old lady that provides explanations in multiple languages.
