During
this
tour,
it
was
hard
not
to
think
of
the
expression,
âWe
are
our
ancestors
wildest
dreams.â
What
a
privilege
and
honor
it
is
to
be
Black
and
born
in
a
time
where
international
travel
for
leisure
is
even
imaginable
for
us,
much
less
to
have
the
resources
and
opportunity
to
experience
it
first
hand.
I
am
truly
grateful
for
the
blessing
this
trip
has
been.
This
is
hands
down
the
best
walking
tour
I
have
ever
been
on.
Our
guide,
Naky,
is
the
best
and
was
extremely
knowledgeable
and
framed
the
history
of
the
triangular
slave
trade
and
European
colonization
in
Africa
with
the
cultural
realities
of
the
time
and
lots
of
primary
historical
sources.
It
is
amazing
to
learn
about
the
history
of
slavery
from
the
perspective
of
Europe
and
the
âold
world,â
and
it
definitely
helps
contextualize
what
we
learn
about
slavery
in
countries,
like
the
US,
where
we
learn
about
slavery
through
a
ânew
worldâ
lens.
I
loved
that
we
had
earpieces
so
we
could
hear
everything
going
on
without
missing
anything
due
to
ambient
noise.
The
tour
is
mostly
flat,
thought
there
are
maybe
two
spots
with
hills
and
stairs.
And
while
the
stairs
were
especially
challenging,
the
whole
group,
regardless
of
age
and
body
shape,
made
it
up
without
issue.
There
was
no
rush;
it
was
easy
to
take
our
time
and
we
all
laughed
about
the
challenge.
In
addition
to
being
very
informative,
the
tour
also
provided
an
amazing
opportunity
to
connect
with
other
Black
tourists
(and
our
local
guide,
of
course),
which
is
not
a
given
when
traveling
throughout
most
of
the
world,
but
especially
in
Europe
(and
Asia).
You
should
absolutely
support
this
(and
other)
Black-owned
business
with
your
tourist
dollars.
Also,
the
dinner
at
the
end
of
the
tour
was
so,
so,
so
damn
good.
(And
offered
great
vegan
options
for
2
of
the
3
special
West
African
dishes
offered
to
the
group.)
***For
White
folks:***
As
a
final
note,
if
you
are
white,
please
consider
signing
up
for
this
tour.
The
effects
of
slavery
still
echo
in
the
lives
of
Black
folks
today
in
2023
and
this
tour
provides
you
an
incredible
opportunity
to
a.)
learn
about
the
rich
and
complex
history
of
Black
people
in
times
of
unthinkable
oppression
in
a
welcoming
space
with
a
friendly
and
knowledgeable
guide
and
b.)
use
some
of
your
tourist
dollars
to
support
a
Black
business.
In
this
case,
it
easily
exceeds
any
âtraditionalâ
walking
tour
Iâve
been
on,
but
surely
is
being
overlooked
by
many
white
travelers
because
there
were
very
few
(but
a
few
nonethelessâincluding
my
boyfriend
who
I
am
traveling
with)
on
the
tour.
I
imagine
the
majority
of
travelers
to
Lisbon
are
white,
so
itâs
hard
to
fathom
why
so
few
of
them
would
be
represented
on
the
tour.
The
fact
that
this
is
offered
through
the
lens
of
the
African
experience
does
not
mean
itâs
only
history
important
to
Black
peopleâhistory
is
history,
be
you
White,
Black
or
any
other
race
or
ethnicity.
I
guarantee
you
will
learn
something
new
and
leave
with
an
important
new
perspective.
If
you
are
afraid
of
stepping
out
of
your
comfort
zone,
just
take
the
leap.
(And
also
maybe
take
a
second
to
reflect
why
an
African
focused
tour
makes
you
feel
like
itâs
out
of
your
comfort
zone.
If
it
makes
you
apprehensive,
itâs
a
good
sign
that
you
will
absolutely
benefit
from
it.)
Black
folks
are
here
and
weâre
here
to
stay,
come
learn
with
and
from
us
during
this
unique
and
awesome
experience
for
tourists.
I
absolutely
and
enthusiastically
recommend
this
tour
to
anyone.
Donât
miss
out
on
a
top-notch,
high
quality
experience
while
visiting
Lisbon.
