(Translated by Google) A place that you must visit in Portugal, especially if you are in the Lisbon or Sintra area. This palace is one of the most beautiful in Europe, during the visit we are led to think that we have entered another era or that we have entered a film, I recommend a visit either alone or with friends and family. To emphasize the friendliness and professionalism of all the staff. The entire surrounding area is surrounded by centuries-old forests and magical places to visit, so take the time to make a peaceful visit without running. I wish you a good visit, always confirm your visit before by phone or email because of covid 19, greetings to all! A ton of history with well-kept grounds, furniture, replicas & trinkets. You have to stick to your time slot at this palace (the only one in the region this is true for) for good reason. You get shuffled through the interior almost single file and there are lots of tourists. Expect to wait & be crowded. Limited entry so make sure you book in advance during busy season.

Amazing experience. You don't have to visit the inside of the palace, only the terrace and walking along the perimeter on the upper surface is enough to give you the full experience. There is also a small chapel not to be missed, it's absolutely beautiful inside with painted glass and marble sculptures. Excellent Vista views of Sintra and the entire city!

This place was amazing. We went early Sunday morning in January and had no trouble parking and walked right in through the gardens. We had a little mix up and didn't get to see the inside but that was fine. Tickets are cheaper if you buy online at least 3 days in advance.

As the next part of our tour, the Pena Palace, should also not be missed. The story of it creation is fascinating. The fact that the materials to build it had to be hauled up some of the steepest and most windy roads I have travelled makes it even more impressive. Luckily for us, it turned out to be one of the best weather days the guides could remember, so the views were stunning.

The National Palace of Pena is really beautiful and looks like something from a fairy tale. It is very colourful and has a unique design, kind of like the pieces in a chess game. Inside, there is a lot to see and explore. But the best part is the terrace, where you can see amazing views, including the Moorish Castle.

We did a one day trip from Lisbon to Palace of Pena. We took a taxi from Lisbon and luckily he dropped us at the main entrance. We need to walk up only 10 mins so we make it on time for our ticket to enter. We need to wait about 10 mins to enter the castle. The castle is very colorful. The tiles and interior inside are very nice. You can spend as much time as you need for the visits but it also depends on how crowded that time. Each room, there is a description to read. You can spend the whole day here. The park/garden are very nice to walk around and rest. You can also see the birds, ducks and etc.. The flowers are blooming which you can enjoy the peaceful and beautiful moment.

We arrived at the Park/garden at 9:20AM on Sunday (the gardens open at 9AM) There was already a line of people buying tickets and a line of people entering the park. Although the line to get into the park was very quick, since security just needed to scan our tickets. 📍Do yourself a favor buy your tickets online, you don't need to choose a date when you are just visiting the park and outer terraces. 📍No need to buy a shuttle bus ticket, the line is longer than the walk up itself. It's a pretty easy up hill walk, that takes about 10-15 minutes. 📍It's a bit tricky to buy tickets for the garden & outer terraces online. But It is worth your money and there is no wait to walk around the outer terraces! 📍I would highly recommend coming to the gardens when they open at 9AM before the line of people starts. When we were leaving the castle terraces, the line was super long around 10:15AM After visiting the castle terraces, we walked around the garden. There are some nice viewpoints like Elizabeth's hights. We went to the farm area, but we didn't see any animals which was disappointing. If you follow these tips you will also have a nice trip like we did.

Beautiful nature and views. We bought tickets in advance online and still had to wait in line in and around the palace. The palace itself wasn’t much to see, but the other things around the palace are great. The Moorish castle is amazing and the small hikes through the woods especially with the lakes are breathtaking .

No visit to Sintra would be complete without spending some time marvelling at the enchanting Palacio Nacional da Pena.  This canary-yellow and terracotta coloured former palace is perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the town and is an eclectic mix of different styles of architecture which somehow or other manage to blend beautifully together. In the 16th century the building that stood here was a relatively humble monastery, dedicated to the Order of Saint Jerome and housing only 18 monks.  The monastery was all but flattened by the powerful earthquake of 1755 which caused devastation and huge loss of life in nearby Lisbon.  It then lay in ruins until in 1838 Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, husband of Queen Maria II of Portugal, recognised its potential as a site to build a palace for the Portuguese royal family. He enlisted the help of German architect, Baron von Eschwege, to create the sumptuous castle and surrounding park that we see today. Years after the death of the Queen, Ferdinand fell in love with Elise Hensler, a highly educated, Swiss-born American opera singer and actress, whom he married, elevating her to the position of Elise, Countess of Edla. On his death, Countess Elise inherited the palace.

So worth the slog up the hill. Be warned! From entry gate (and the initial queue), it's around 30mins walk up to the Palace entry Q. They are very strict with entry time slot. The Palace, it's gardens and the little lakes are a wonderful , restful outing. Use bug spray for the gardens and take a stroller for youngsters. The view is awesome from the parapets, well organized queues. Has a small cafeteria with lively outdoor seating. Choose an early slot or much later in the day. Midday is chaos. Don't choose a Monday- Lisbon has many closed sightseeing spots and tourists flood to Sintra. You can walk the gardens and exit at the lakes. No need to return to the main entrance. We walked from here a short distance to the Moorish Castle.

Very nice historical palace to visit. There is lot of walk so wear comfortable shoes, lots of uphill walk. Very colourful and well maintained palace to visit. It has nice restaurant inside for quick snacks. I really enjoyed its colours. Also beautiful view of city and ocean from top of palace. Beautiful gardens and trees in the way to palace to enjoy scenic view. They give you 2 hours time slot to see palace so not much crowd. I spent wonderful day there.

A very nice palace to visit. The park around it is amazing. A must to see when you go to Lisbon. The inside of the palace is kind of small and the visit is very straightforward. A lot of tourist on site but the line is going fast. The ticket are sold with a time slot so no need to rush.

This is an absolute must see when in Sintra Portugal and Lisbon Portugal. Just 45 minutes away by train from Lisbon it’s like visiting the Disney castle! Get tickets in advance and group them with the Moorish Castle which is basically next door. The building/castle is the best part. Colors look awesome and the views are great! Just don’t wander around in the park too long… you might get lost like we did and we were not prepared to hike that long in dresses and sandals. Wear hiking shoes! So many hills. Stay on the WIDE paths. That’s my advice. And just skip the park and go straight to the castle, because when you exit the castle you could go through the gardens anyway on the way to Moorish castle…

Well worth a visit. You will be stung on the bus to get upto the entry for the Palace. It is €14 from Sintra Station. From the gates of the palace grounds to the palace is about a 30 minute up hill walk. There is a return bus for another €3. So be mindful when booking a palace entry time. It is advisable to leave plenty of time and book in advance. Once you enter the palace there are a number of brilliant rooms to view and it will take about 45 minutes to complete the walk through. When in the cathedral use your phone camera too zoom into the window of the castle. You will find the glass contains the same images as the entire stained glass windows

It’s worth going. I didn’t expect it to be so convenient to book from Ctrip. There are quite a lot of people in line. I saw a lot of classical furniture including many Chinese porcelains. The Pena Palace is built on a hilltop and the surrounding environment is very good.

(Translated by Google) It can also be reached by hop on hop off bus from the center of Sintra, but you can also walk on a good big hike through a wonderful park with quite a few catchers. Very nice neo-Romanian castle, built in 1854. (Original) Sintra központjából hop on hop off busszal is megközelíthető, de egy jó nagy túrával gyalog is elérhető egy csodás parkon keresztül elég sok kaptatóval. One of the most amazing Palaces in the world. No wonder UNESCO has made it a World Heritage site. Plenty of hiking opportunities or take the short bus round trip from the ticket office for 3€. Save 5% by booking online (even if you are already there). Public transportation options to get up there or parking is possible (maybe not in high season). Much better in person.

this is officially the most beautiful castle I have been in Europe. The history is interesting, the decoration is beautiful, colors amazing and the views outstanding. You need to buy the ticket choosing the timeslot of when you'll enter the castle. I would recommend you to eat outside and bring maybe your own snacks because there's nothing to eat around and the 'restaurants' inside the complex are terrible and very few options. The walk around the gardens is gorgeous. Highly recommend this place

The palace is located in the mountains and it's location is absolutely amazing. We came during an overcast day so we weren't able to see the surrounding location very well, but it was still worth it. Get your tickets online in advance which were about 13 euros each. There is also a section to enter inside and get a look at the architecture. Definitely a great and beautiful place to see.

National Palace of Pena: Stunning from the Outside My wife and I had the opportunity to visit the National Palace of Pena in Sintra, a place known for its breathtaking architecture and beautiful gardens. Here are some tips and tricks for future visitors: - Skip the Interior Ticket: Consider not buying a ticket to go inside the palace. Despite visiting in the off-season, we found it crowded and restrictive for exploring or taking photos. - Enjoy the Exterior and Gardens: The palace's exterior and gardens are its true highlights. You can capture most of its beauty from the outside, with many great photo opportunities. - Prepare for the Uphill Walk:If you start at the bottom, be ready for an uphill walk to the palace. It's a bit long but manageable and worth the views. - Visit in the Off-Season: Even in off-season months like November, the palace can be crowded. Plan your visit accordingly to avoid the busiest times. Overall, the National Palace of Pena is a must-visit for its stunning views and architectural beauty. While the interior might not offer the best experience, the exterior and gardens are more than worth your time.

This castle is magical. So many different styles and colours, combined in one place in a perfect harmony. The wall walk provides great views of the area. The time slots are for the rooms visit only so if you just want to enjoy the views you only need the gardens ticket.

This castle is insane. From location to art. Lovely place to visit. My recommendation is that you take a cab up here. Don’t try to hike up because it’ll ruin the rest of your day. Especially if you wanna see other things. Buy your ticket online. It’s the same price “I think” and you’ll skip the ticket line. You really don’t want to waste time in this area and move quickly. There’s so much to see. Hike back down, it’s nice and easy.

The palace is great from the outside, but I want particularly bothered with the stuff on the inside. And it was slow going, because of the people around all the time and taking pictures. The terraces were less crowded and the view was great. The ticket also includes as much rambling around the park as your feet can handle. It is really well maintained and parts of it are really picturesque. Worth taking the time to visit the countess's chalet; it's included in the ticket price. There were only a few visitors when I was there. Tip: buy the tickets online. You'll save 5% and can walk past a hundred or more people queuing to buy tickets there. Another tip. Stroll up the hill some more to get to the Alta Cruz. Go to the right and you'll find narrow steps going down. Pretty soon there's an unpaved path to the left. Follow it for about 10 metres and you'll get a great shot of the palace - the one I've included here.

Really beautiful castle I have 4 start as outside is more spectacular than inside. Lot of people visit and the ticket is 14€. Connected with beautiful garden but need a half a day to explore all as is huge together with the castle inside out. Bus 434 can take you here for 3,80€ and down from centre sintra. Use bus to come here. Highly recommend the place.

Unique and historical Moorish palace that was used as monastery as well. Built on a rock out in the countryside it is surrounded by magnificent gardens, landscape and trees. You can see the city and ocean from this high point. Inside is smaller than one would expect but lovely and colorful. The rooms are furnished as they would have been with antiquities from the original era. We bought tickets online and had a guide drive us for the day who was very knowledgeable and fun. A must see I think if you travel to Portugal.

Could easily spend a whole day here or two. There is so much to see and do particularly in the grounds and park. The palace itself looked like something straight out of a Disney film. Such interesting history behind the whole of Sintra and this is the most popular attraction.

Quite good but the queue to enter the palace itself is extremely long, so in the end we opted to buy the park ticket only. You must buy a ticket in advance or endure another long queue to even buy a ticket in the first place. In my opinion there is no need to visit the (very busy) palace itself anyway. You can access a little bit of the ramparts with the park ticket, but the park itself is extremely beautiful and worth exploring. It's so quiet as well as the palace provides a distraction for the masses to visit, so feel free to explore the beautiful and well landscaped park in near solitude. We especially liked how there were 'natural' seats landscaped alongside the paths, and enjoyed visiting the chalet and learning about the history of the palace and park itself too.

The exterior of the palace is not fancy. When you get inside the palace, you can see endless lines of mountains with different kinds of trees to very far. The temperature is colder than Lisbon. Worth to visit for understanding more of history and culture of Portugal. Recommend to buy ticket in advanced though it allowed walk-in tickets on the day I visited.

Gorgeous historical site. Colorful and rich with history and awe inspiring views. We bought tickets the day before online. Decided to get the 5:30pm slot for lesser crowds. Enjoyed walking through the interiors and taking lots of pictures around the outside of the palace. Sunset was incredible. Definitely plan on wearing comfortable shoes.

Although getting here was a bit tricky when we had a car i.e. where to park, once we got here it was beautiful. Would 100% recommend doing the interior (if it is part of your ticket) first because by the time it was midday, the queue was very long! Overall, very well maintained, cafe/restaurant on site, and toilets too. Just make sure you know how you are going to get to the site first!

Very popular, very busy, like visiting a Walt Disney Palace. If that’s your thing… go and visit. I thought that the gardens around it were far more interesting and with almost no visitors. Beautiful trees and very good views on the palace. You can at least spent 2 hours in the park and you will hardly see any other people once you leave the palace.

Although perhaps quite pricey, both the exterior architecture and breathtaking views are a sight to behold. Inside are lots of great historical artifacts and rooms to spend quite some time in. Can be extremely busy so be prepared, and best to buy a ticket in advance to get your preferred time slot! Also prepare to take a steep hike upwards if you don't want to pay an extra 3euros for a shuttle.

restored, given new coat of shell to bring out magnificent interior of collections. Got to prepare more time like an hour to get to the top (entrance) because roads can be jammed on peak days. If less crowds, it’s a great place to feel the breeze and enjoy panoramic scenes.

Amazing Palace! The view from there is also incredible! The price was 14€ per ticket per adult ( November 2023 ) For the Palace of Pena only. The inside was nice but not breathtaking in my opinion but still pretty and interesting of course. It doesn't take a lot of time to visit everything. I recommend it.

This is a fantastic palace to explore. There's a lot of history here with lots of plaques detailing lots of interesting facts on daily life of the occupants. The architecture is absolutely beautiful, as are the views. You absolutely need to purchase tickets in advance. Tickets are timed and you need to arrive within your timeslot. Once in, you can stay as long as you'd like, though you'll likely be done after a couple of hours, unless you are a real history buff and wish to read every plaque in every room. If you're visiting the palace, your ticket also allows you to explore the surrounding grounds, which are huge. You could certainly spend the rest of the day wandering the trails and monuments. If you enjoy hiking, you can allot as much time here as your schedule allows. Bathrooms are available on site. If you're visiting multiple sites in Sintra in a single day, I would recommend hiring a driver to maximize your time. You can certainly do it on your own with public transit, but it'll be rushed as you'll be spending more time waiting.

Visit data: 12/21/2022. We were on a tour and spent ~2 hrs. It was worth it, take your warmer jacket with you. It's beautiful inside and outside, worth a visit. Tickets: purchased ahead online, download the file so you won't need working internet to get in. They check the tickets 3 times, so save that file somewhere safe. Ride up & down the hill: do that if you have young children with you, it's too much to expect them to do all unless they're pro hikers.

Had an amazing day with my mom there but it is hard to walk up there we took the tuk tuk cab up and the buss down it was very beautiful and the palace rooms had lovely detailing but in my opinion its the outdoor area of the palace and the terraces around it that are the hit factor. Inside the palace there is around 10-15 rooms and around 4 bigger halls it is very nice and again a lot of amazing wood craved details and marble and staying glas as far as you can look but its not your typical type of palace with lots of gold and kitsch and pompous rather it is arty and detailed with love and devotion. If you are not really in to that go up buy the ticket for the garden but not for the palace inside you will have amazing views and get off a bit cheeper it is an expensive experience for 2x people we payed following: 25€ for the cab up, 2x 14€ for the palace garden admission, 2x 14€ for the palace inside area admission, 2x 7 € for the bus to come back down come to overall 95€ for 2 people to see one palace on top of the fact we where on holiday in Lisbon so we had to buy train tickets to get to sintra in the first place. Also there is a shop there that sells snacks and drinks and the items they do have are reassnobly priced especially compared to the tickets and the fact they are quality products but variety is very very very limited. Staff is friendly and accommodating.

First of all, you should visit this castle if you travel to Portugal. This is my favourite Sintra/ Lisbon location. Secondly, It is definitely well-worth to visit. The castle is impressive and you'll see some amazing photos. You can go there by bus. It's free to enter the site, but you have to buy a ticket if you want to visit inside the palace. Buying a ticket online is suggested. You can see the original furniture inside the palace. It is possible to buy tickets from the local tourist office.

We walked from Sintra to the top of the mountain, to be met by an amazing palace. The exterior is something exceptional, the outside walls are covered in hand-crafted, colourful tiles which makes the palace different from many other palaces. The interior has been fitted with furniture used by the king and queen of Portugal - kept the way it was in 1910. The palace provides a glimpse of what the inhabitants' lives must have been like, even to the cutlery and crockery.

Go early and avoid the crowds - it's worth it! The grounds were immaculate and there were plenty of restrooms. The climb from the bus drop off to the entry was steep, but the reward was worth it! Architecturally, the castle is all over the place, with bright yellows and blues combined with ornate doorways, windows, and ceilings. Be sure to tour the well-preserved rooms with the gorgeous furniture and fixtures!

We couldn't spend much time in the gardens given the unfortunate weather conditions but the palace itself is beautiful. Very picturesque views (even though it was raining and foggy in December) and some history to be found. The palace is not well kept from the outside (walls) and there are some restorations taking place right now but worth a visit. Buy tickets online if possible. We only wanted to buy the tickets for the palace but we couldn't as the kiosk outside the palace only had the option to buy both palace and park.

It is worth to visit a fairytale like castle from Lisbon. The castle was designed to be a residential place not war preparation. So it is a magnificent design and fairytale. It is a family oriented tour place. I used an App like bolt/ free now to have a round trip there to save time. The trip from Lisbon was easy, but the return trip was a little bit challenge because three drivers refused my ride request. Finally, fourth try worked. But, the situation wasn’t serious because I saw many local drivers were negotiating with people for return trips to Lisbon. Prepare be there early morning because of a long line. They controlled traffic inside the castle.

So much cool stuff to see and do, yes the castle is amazing but do not forget to walk the grounds. You can get lost and explore all funds of woods. Be aware it is cooler at the top and it gets packed early. Worth the visit.

Gorgeous castle and beautiful park, my boyfriend and I spent almost three hours walking on the castle grounds and were awestruck by it’s beauty! The only issue we had was the food, the snack machine didn’t work and the sandwiches we bought in the cafeteria were not edible. Highly recommend a visit but make sure you’re not hungry :) we took a tour hop-on-hop-off bus which was pretty convenient!

Amazing palace! Never seen anything like that, so colorful and gorgeous. Also a huge national park with a lot of interesting plants. We bought tickets online and didn't wait for the entrance in park, but if you want to come inside , there was line, so be careful.

It's a nice experience. The park is way more interesting and fun than the palace itself which was rather small. The Moors Castle was actually a much better experience for views and history. But it's a must do activity in Lisbon.

Beautiful palace with very well planned routes through to make sure everyone sees the best parts! We went on a weekday and found it very busy but luckily had a private tour through Get Your Guide which I would definitely recommend as we skipped the whole queue!

It's a must visit place if you're in Lisbon. It was originally built as a cathedral and later a palace for the royal family was added. The cathedral was red in color and the palace was built in yellow color, making it one of most colorful palaces in the world. The palace is very busy throughout the day. The best way to visit it is by joining a skip the line package tour with guide. There is a 15 min uphill walk from the parking to reach the palace. Shuttle bus is available with a 3 euro ticket, there too long queue will be there to get in. But it's worth the trouble to visit it.

For me, it is nice but it doesn't worth the time and effort you make to see it, also the price you pay is expensive compared to other better palaces. The waiting time is long, the queue is incredible, very crowded, when we got inside we were walking shoulder to shoulder, you can't stop to admire something, hard to take photos. We followed the map to see the gardens, there weren't gardens, it is a forest, we made an effort and went down to the stables and the glass gardens both were closed, we were really disappointed.

Magnificent and beautiful palace that is spoiled by crowds of people. Totally worth visiting, but expect that the whole visit you'll be crawling in the snake queue. A must - but tickets in advance! Otherwise you can expect to wait several hours before the next available slot. It's also important to appear before the palace gates (not the park gates) on time, so arrive to the park at least 15 minutes earlier.

Absolutely a must see when in Sintra, Pena Palace is beautiful and worth the wait. It is unsurprisingly very crowded (we went in August), but that didn't prevent us from having an excellent time. The palace offers sweeping views of Sintra and has bathrooms on-site. There is quite a wait to get inside, but nothing too crazy. Overall, if you're visiting Lisbon, taking a day trip to Sintra and seeing Pena Palace is so worth it.

What a beautiful place. Lines are very large so tickets should be bought in advance and you can only enter at the designated time. If you want you can visit the exterior part only, but you won’t get to see all areas. The restaurant in the basement serves great food and was a good option for lunch after a few hours on the lines and touring the castle.

The palace is definitely a must if you're near by. But I would say the entrance ticket is over priced for what you get, which is pretty much walking around lost. I am sure that the experience would be much different/better if instead of walking along with multiple private guided groups in different languages, the guidance is provided by the place or the audio guide is included instead of charging extra for it in an app that doesn't even work well. The service is terrible. The place is beautiful, but the experience should be more than that.

From the entrance you can walk 5-10 min. to the main gate or take a shuttle bus (3€). The ticket price can be reduced by buying the combine ticket with other Sintra's attractions and also with the Lisbon Card. Bring water with if you want to spend some time in the park or pay 3€ for 50 ml. bottle in the palace. There're also many spring fountains in the park. If I go to Sintra again, I'll visit this palace first to avoid tourists.

Very nice views out of the walls of the palace. Definitely take a bus when going up there to save time and energy for visiting the castle. Hop on hop off seems to be the most convenient. Unless you like hiking. Way back to the railway station takes about half an hour.

The ticketing system was absolutely awful which is why it lost one star. There are only two ticket machines, and one was out of order so it took a long time to get a ticket. While in the queue there was an advertisement with a link to a website where you could buy a ticket online. The website wasn't working. Its almost as if they didn't want to sell any tickets to people. Apart from that the Palace was really nice, and the interior was very beautiful and unique. Definitely recommend it. Try and get a ticket online to avoid the awful ticketing system.

Great little Palace on top of the hill. Has a small exhibition inside. The walk on the walls offers great views. If you want to take drone photos you have to email [email protected], although I didn't get a reply in time to do this. I would recommend the 3 euro round trip using the bus to get up to the Palace. There are nearby lakes and stables as well, these we didn't explore.

The Sintra-Cascais nature park, located about 30 km north of Lisbon, covers a vast and very diverse area. There one can find, for instance, dense forest, mountain, beaches and dunes, incredible palaces, exotic and lush gardens, etc. The undeniable scenic value associated with this protected area was recognized by UNESCO by integrating part of the mountain and Sintra's historical centre in the World Heritage List with the category of "cultural landscape". In a nutshell, it's a magical and wonderful place; a must-visit, especially for those who enjoy outdoor walks in an area of extreme natural beauty.

We went in early July 2020 and there were all of about 10 other people there. Amazing experience to visit somewhere so popular without any crowds. A must visit if you are staying in/around Sintra or if you want a day trip from Lisbon.

This place is pure magic. The history is in waves, and most of those historic periods can be identified by the boldly colored sections of the castle. It's as fairy-tale-like as you could imagine a castle to be. We were there at the very beginning of Spring, when the crowds were not what I'm sure they usually are in the Summer season (which was ideal). I'd also recommend to the able-bodied to do the walk from the parking area and bus stops which is not the most direct to the top. The gardens surrounding the castle are gorgeous. Even this element is fairy-tale-like. It's a mix of both a designed park with meticulously curated trees, flowers, gardens, and waterways, but also all of that within the context of the ancient nature and landscape which exists naturally on this most picturesque Portuguese perches. If we would've had the time, we would've spent the whole day there, exploring more of the park and also visiting the cliff-top Moorish castle which is on the adjacent peak (Castelo dos Mouros). That will have to wait until next time. Some advice: stay in the moment here. Because nearly every moment of approaching and being within the castle is a perfect picture opportunity, but take some time away from your camera, feel and smell the breezes and the flowers and notice the changes of color as the sun moves and the sounds of the trees around you. It's easy to forget your own moments here and get stuck in the screen of your camera/phone. Enjoy!

Up a very large hill so be prepared for walk up as you cannot be dropped by the front gate (thanks covid). Once at the main gate its still uphill from there, take your time as they are fairly steep slopes. Once you reach the summit the views are breathtaking and the Palace is stunning.

Amazing palace. Very beautiful views. Nearby there is a nice-looking castle. Chargeable entry, but it worth it. It’s difficult to find parking there, so you’d better take taxi or smth. One of the most gorgeous palaces in Europe, the best in Portugal for sure!

(Translated by Google) A worthwhile excursion destination. Ideally, you should get on the train in Lisbon and drive to Sintra. You roam the less beautiful suburbs and then from the train station you can first explore the little town, which is quite crowded with tourists. Then by bus up to the castles, which are somehow magically colorfully designed (at least one). It seems to have fallen out of the world and the park is really worth seeing. Lots of nature and sometimes fewer people. It's worth it! (Original) Eine lohnenswertes Ausflugsziel.

Really nice castle in Sintra, colorful, eye-catching, and well maintained! The palace also has a very interesting history so be sure to catch that! The interior however wasn’t as grand as the exterior so I don’t really recommend purchasing a ticket for it. We had fun exploring the castle on a winter morning but quick tip: the palace can be very windy so dress accordingly! We came here on a winter morning expecting mild temps but the real feel was way colder than we were expecting! The cafeteria was not bad and had decent prices so no worries if you’re suddenly hungry while you’re here. We ate so much for 30 euro but the choices were not many.

(Translated by Google) Although the (guided) tour does not allow you to fully enjoy the local climate, it is worth the visit to get to know this famous palace, which makes up the "mandatory" itinerary to see the best of Sintra. For those who appreciate and study the environment, this mountain range of Sintra, where the palace and the Castelo dos Mouros are located, is rich in plant species and with a little luck you can see one or another bird. Portugal is a country where there are almost no more forests, so whoever wants to know the original Portuguese forests, the tip is the Serra de Sintra or Serra da Estrela. Perhaps also the Serra D'Aire near Fátima, which corresponds more or less to what is the Serra do Japi in Jundiaí. My favourite experience in Sintra/ Lisbon. Well worth a visit. The castle is remarkable and you can get some great pictures. Reccommend combining your ticket with the one for the Moors (worth seeing both). You can also get a handy bus from the square instead of walking up. Tickets can be bought from the local tourist office, which is a 10 minute walk from the train station.

If you have little time to spend, it is the palace to visit. You can both enjoy the national park and the magnificent romantic Palace. One of the few castles I have ever visited which is still authentic. The national park is a great treasure. I felt so well in it. You can hear the birds sing, visit a lot of places like the stables, the high cross, the chalet. Count 3 to 4 hours of visit if you wanna check all the areas. 2 hours with a fast tour of the castle and the park. Beware of the taxi riders, they can sell you some lies like the bus won't come, you will have to wait a lot, just to sell you a ride.

The Pena Palace (Portuguese: Palácio da Pena) is a Romanticist castle in São Pedro de Penaferrim, in the municipality of Sintra, on the Portuguese Riviera. The castle stands on the top of a hill in the Sintra Mountains above the town of Sintra, and on a clear day it can be easily seen from Lisbon and much of its metropolitan area. It is a national monument and constitutes one of the major expressions of 19th-century Romanticism in the world. The palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. It is also used for state occasions by the President of the Portuguese Republic and other government officials.

The Palace of Pena is a very interesting museum, combing old history with contemporary stories. The way it was developed, from an old monastery gives to this palace a very specific architecture and aura. Be aware that you can’t get to the palace by car. You either take a bus from Sintra, either find a parking place and take a TukTuk that will bring you also back.

Cannot possibly describe this place and give it the honor it deserves. Is is beyond gorgeous. This is located in Sintra, Portugal and to see and appreciate everything it offers, you need to stay in town. If you are ever in the vicinity, please don't miss it.

For me, it's not worth to pay €14 to enter to the palace. The view it's better from outside and you can just walk through the park. There is nothing interesting inside the palace (it's ok, but I've seen better and more interesting stuff).

  • 5/5 Jeffrey G. 2 years ago on Google
Amazing experience, beautiful castle grounds and vegetation. The castle itself is so colorful and different from others we have visited across other European countries. Had a private tour and guide was so helpful to explain the history and different architectural aspects. Inside is self guided ~30 minutes.

Absolutely worth it! It takes a while to arrive there if you're staying in Lisbon but it is really really recommended to plan a visit here. Beautiful colours, amazing atmosphere!!!

Beautiful palace, well worth a visit. Views from the ramparts are great. Steep walk up to the palace itself. Make sure you get a tuk tuk up there and back if you're short of time.

Worth the 6.5€ admission. A beautiful castle with many different architectural styles. Has an unreal view as far as the eye can see in all directions. Its a bit of a hike but recommend checking out the cork house at the other end of the grounds. Gives a good view of the palace as well.

  • 5/5 Jenny K. 2 years ago on Google
Magical place to explore! We only got the entrance tickets. We didn't go inside. The park is really nice and the view from the castle is gorgeous. There is a bus at the entrance to drive you all the way up to the castle. But it cost 3 euros per person. It's worth it if you are not good by food. But I personally think this should be included or discounted for people with disabilities.

A very unique place, definitely didn’t expect it would be like it was in the pictures. Close to Lisbon shame to not visit if you’re already that close. Not expensive the only annoying thing was find parking for the car

Amazing palace with shiny colours. If you visited Sintra and didn't go to Pena Palace, then you actually didn't visit Sintra yet. You can go to it and some other attractions by using bus 434 next to Sintra train station which costs €11.

  • 5/5 Anna G. 2 years ago on Google
The exterior is absolutely marvellous, I recommend leaving Pena for after 12 as there's less tourists. Views are also very scenic. I was not mad about the interior but the overall castle design and vistas made up for it.

I enjoyed my visit of the palace, but I wouldn’t say it’s the monument #1 in Portugal. Stunning view of the countryside and the ocean

Beautiful palace. It’s a good steep walk to get to the palace but so worth it! We went in January and had no wait and beautiful weather. The palace grounds have several trails that are worth a visit too.

The place is so beautiful and well keep you would thing its not as old as it is. The grounds are magnificent you may walk into the cattle see how kings use to live before. Well recommended we visited with @thecooltour very nice and enjoyable.

So gorgeous this Palace. Hard to believe that this is all in one place as the colors, tiles and decorations are a lot all together, but it all works magically to be the brightest most interesting building I have visited. Get the bus pass and you can visit many attractions in the area for one low price.

Beautiful and huge place. Don't hurry up in that place, visit the palace, then walk around in park. I was enjoyed there, great architecture, enough information during visiting the palace, good fresh air. Huge plus, there a good WiFi connection, so you can to buy tickets online instead staying in the queue. Just suggestions, better be there in the morning 10-14, not a huge amount of people and not so hot

  • 5/5 Aqib S. 1 year ago on Google
Truly amazing! This place is surreal. The only trick is that you need to reach there as early as possible because the queues and the crowd gets crazy by 12 pm. Not only the palace but the garden, rather forest, is also very enjoyable. There is a lot of uphill and downhill hiking within the area so go wearing the most comfortable of your shoes.

The castle is located in a picturesque place on the top of a mountain with a wonderful view of the surrounding area. The castle itself looks picturesque like a fairy tale. Exhibitions in the castle halls are interesting, a lot of exhibits and exhibitions. A very interesting place and worth visiting. I recommend a walk around the castle chambers and its surroundings, you can fall in love with this place 🙂👍😍

You must get there as early as possible (by 9:00 am) during peak periods to avoid endless queues. Buy your tickets online it will save you time at the gate. There is a small shuttle bus that takes you to the entrance (uphill) and you must select it when you buy your tickets online. Have coins for the vending machines in case you need some water/snacks. If you don't mind the ascend I'd suggest not taking the bus and wonder around there are quiet, scenic paths that take you to the palace. It is well maintained and routed and the fact that it was a monastery before makes it interesting because you learn the history of both. We booked a tour guide I think it is the best option we asked our questions and also walked along the walls (otherwise we wouldn't have known). There we saw the amazing view. We easily spent 5 hours there. There are toilets only at the foot of the hill (at the ticket checkpoint) so refresh yourself before going up to the palace.

Very nice to visit. The gardens are spectacular and the views of the palace beautiful. It is however an extremely busy tourist attraction. You can choose to enter the palace and stand in a queue for a couple of hours, or you can just walk around the palace, peak through the windows and even walk on the walls. The inside is a museum, might be boring for some.

One of the most beautiful palaces I have visited. I advise you to buy your tickets through the official Sintra site before you go. It can be quite busy and that saves waiting time. You can visit the palace both inside and out. The rooms inside are all beautiful and give you a good idea of the history. Outside you have beautiful views of the surrounding area and the palace. Only the road to the palace is beautiful. It is also possible to have a drink (it can be very hot there). To get to the palace I used a taxi, but you can also take a tuktuk or go by car.

  • 5/5 Ty 1 year ago on Google
Beautiful castle, but very popular and can be very busy. Recommend a guided tour, although there are many labels our tour guide offered some good insight. Get there early, it gets busy. Don't bother with the bus to the top, it's not a bad walk and just another line to wait in.

  • 5/5 Jordan G. 10 months ago on Google
This was a beautiful visit to an amazing piece of history. I took my family of six, and was glad I had an infant due to the lines of people. We arrived at 11, and would have waited at least 1.5 hours to get in, but thankfully they prioritize people with infants and moved us to the front of the line. This was both for the bus up, and line to get in, and pretty much anything else. VERY family friendly. It doesn’t take long to explore unless you include the gardens, which I recommend.

  • 5/5 Tanah D. 10 months ago on Google
Absolutely incredible make sure you allow at least an hour or two or three for the surrounding gardens. Very relaxing take a picnic if you like. Magical atmosphere! Sure you go very early in the day or the last booking at 5 pm to avoid crowds.

  • 5/5 Tamara S. 9 months ago on Google
You must be punctual. So amazing, worth the wait and the uphill walk. Plan to spend at least a few hours. There is a lot to explore on the ground and don't rush through the castle. Check everything out. Enjoy a snack on the veranda 🙂

  • 5/5 Kimber L. 9 months ago on Google
A must see. The palace garden requires about 2 hours to discover as it is HUGE and amazing. The palace is breathtaking and has amazing views. If you’re driving there, continue on uphill until you get the the entrance gates and drive a little further down and there is parking. Don’t make the mistake of parking at the first parking area and walking up. Also don’t make the mistake of walking there as it is a good 25 minute drive uphill (about an hour walk) and on a 28 degree+ day you will definitely turn back around. Take a taxi/Uber instead.

Built by a king as a dedication to his queen. Absolutely over the top indulgence and glamour but worth visiting! Would recommend visiting in the afternoon (our entry ticket was for 4pm) during high season. There are still crowds but it's significantly less crowded than if you were to go in the morning (when most tours arrive)

Fantastic fantasy castle on the highest hill in Sintra. The home of German aristocracy left pretty much as it was when the abandoned it. Fabulous architecture and views, a real highlight of our time in Portugal. Book your ticket in advance and make sure you get to the castle at least 30 minutes before the time you book, as there can be queues plus a walk from the gate to the entrance.

  • 5/5 Theresa H. 7 months ago on Google
Buy your tickets in advance and get a time slot for early in the day. It is a fantastic experience climbing up the road and then going through all the parts of the Palace. Give yourselves lots of time because you can easily make a day of it. We had a great time and our entire day was amazing.

  • 5/5 Myriam J. 8 months ago on Google
Very pretty castle. I recommend to go as early as you can, very crowdy. If your ticket is at 2pm. It’s for the entrance to the castle, you can still come earlier to hang out in the gardens and take your time to reach the castle. It’s a small walk of 10minutes but pretty steep.

A really beautiful Palace in Sintra Portugal,. Interesting and unique architecture located on the top of the hill and surrounding with a lot of gardens. Of course during the high season the place is crowded with a lot of people because of it, I highly recommend buying the tickets in advance online, If you're a photographer it will be really hard to take up a good picture of the Palace because lots of people, but still recommend it to go there nearly sunset. Also if you are going to get tickets directly to the box office do not forget to buy tickets for the shuttle bus which is going from the bottom to the Palace on the top. It will save your energy to walk up.

  • 5/5 Renaud L. 7 months ago on Google
Very beautiful park and castle, with breathtaking views of the surrounding area. If you have a ticket in advance and arrive early entry can be quick, but be careful not to arrive too late, or want to enter the castle. The line to visit the interior of the castle was very long and we found the view from the balconies satisfactory.

  • 5/5 Renate V. 7 months ago on Google
The Pena Palace is a must-see in Sintra, but in the high season, it's too crowded, and I prefer walking through Pena Park. The flora in the park is amazing, so much variety, and there's always something in bloom. If you buy a ticket just for Pena Park, it's much cheaper, and you're able to see the Palace from the outside as well. From Pena Park you can make a beautiful walk down to the old centre of Sintra.

  • 5/5 Quentin P. 7 months ago on Google
Beautiful Palace. If you plan on visiting, earlier is definitely better. The walk through the palace is guided and takes you through rooms one by one. It is easy to get stuck behind one of the tours while they discuss a room, the later you go, the heavier the traffic. While there, the places is majestic and beautiful. The views are spectacular, and the freedom you can walk the walls with at the completion of the tour is staggering. This venue is a must visit!

  • 4/5 Lauren J. 7 months ago on Google
If you only have time for one palace in Sintra, go to Pena Palace. Getting up the hill from Sintra town has a lot of traffic, so give yourself an extra 30 minutes before your time slot. After you arrive at the gate, you have to walk from the park entrance up to the top of the hill (if you take the stairs, this takes seven minutes). There's a bus that goes from the gate to the top that's a separate ticket for 3 euro. At the top, you have to wait in line. This is very confusing. It took me around 20 minutes to go through. Once you're in the castle, you're in a line following everyone else through each room. It's beautiful and unique if you have the patience for it. It's very well preserved and continuously maintained. Bring a sweater, you're at cloud level. Took about one hour once inside, audio for not necessary.

Beautiful inside and out, unusually bright colours for the outside walls, it stands out against the blue sky and the greenery. Very crowded, despite us being there early and having booked the tickets in advance. The only place where they were kind of obsessed with checking our tickets, did that at least 5 times. But that’s a minor, as the building was beautiful, with intricate details and decorations, and the views are fabulous. And the park is an amazing place for a nice walk, tranquil and relaxing

The castle is beautiful, but unfortunately was raining and was extremely foggy. We weren’t unable to see the beauty of the outside of the castle. The line was extremely long, highly recommended to buy tickets in advance and get to the place on time.

  • 5/5 PM 4 months ago on Google
Stunning place, get there early for opening so you can see the grounds without so many around. The inside of the palace is interesting but I wouldn’t felt like I missed out if I didn’t go inside. The audio that you can purchase with the facility did not work well and the app kept closing so I wouldn’t recommend this. Many people around us went on a tour and this may be better if you are looking for the information.

I recently visited the Pena Palace in November and I was pleasantly surprised. Despite it being a very popular destination, the atmosphere was not too overwhelming and there were many areas where I could find some peace and quiet. The view from the palace was stunning; the surrounding landscape and architecture were breathtaking. The wind was cold and chilly, but it didn’t take away from the beauty of the place. I would highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a place to escape to for a while.

Despite visiting on a weekday, we were disappointed by the long waiting times. The sheer number of visitors took away from the overall experience. Admittance was in groups at specific times, so it's important not to be late. Although the castle’s architecture and history were impressive and worth seeing, it was difficult to truly enjoy it with the large crowds. We felt like we were constantly in a queue, walking in single file throughout the entire visit.

Incredible fairytale palace in the mountains with a rich history, breathtaking architecture and scenery. It is very likely to be like nothing you have ever seen before and well worth the trip. We had an otherworldly experience as the mist lay in the valley while we had full sun at the palace. Be prepared for the weather to be several degrees cooler in the mountains especially in the cooler months. There are also extensive gardens as well as a Moorish castle which could easily take a day to explore. Sadly we didn't have time to see either of these and will definitely come back another time. This is well worth taking a guided tour originating in Lisbon to avoid queues and simplify the journey.

I went here on an evening during a day trip in Lisbon and this place is INCREDIBLE. We took a train from the city to Sintra, which didn't cost much, and an additional bus to the landmarks in the area, such as the Palacio da Pena and the Moorish Castle. Sintra itself is scenic and beautiful, with cute cafes and vendors on the cobblestone streets. At the visitors center, however, we were told that the landmark had closed for the day (an hour, strangely enough, before the written closing time) and that the buses had stopped running uphill to the castle. So we walked 1.5 km to the palace and found that it, in fact, wasn't closed. The walk was quite beautiful though. There were quite a few people there, but not enough to deter us from taking wide-angle shots of the beautiful view ahead of us and some portraits. The palace itself is beautiful, ensconced in facades over colorful walls and precarious-looking terraces. The open-air courtyards and corridors are also a great place to take photos. And the view from the highest terraces extends all the way to the sea. It's really straight out of a fantasy movie....definitely put this on your list if you're in Portugal.

Interesting architecture, cheerful colors on the outside, inside everything as expected, nature and pleasant courtyards. Buy tickets online in advance for your appointment. From the train station, take a retro vehicle with an electric drive, we recommend a reproduction Ford T, green, the driver is extremely friendly. All recommendations.

Very nice palace, the outer design is amazing to see during a sunny day! It’s best to buy your tickets in advance, but it’s not necessary because the ticket office is pretty empty without too much a cue when we went there. If you have a Lisbon card, you can get a discount when you buy your tickets in person, but not online.

Cool castle and pretty interesting walking through the rooms and seeing the old furniture and reading up the history. I guess due to spacing it was a bit annoying walking behind people in the castle and not being able to pass them. I went in November and still got my tickets online in advance. When you get there, you like up and then you still have to walk up (~15mins) or take a shuttle up there, and line up there again. So be conscious of the time of your appointment.

The palace is amazing. If you can, i strongly recommend the hike up from Sintra through the park and Pena Park. The walk is about 1 hour but well worth it. It is steep so be prepared.

Please buy tickets at least 2-3 days in advance as these are timed and they run out very quickly. Beautiful beautiful palace, definitely go inside and explore the rooms, the terrace. Even explore the gardens, I walked to the High Cross, didn’t get the view of the castle as it was covered with trees but the walk was worth it for the view I got.
