Wow, what a lovely experience! The palace is absolutely beautiful, the architecture is amazing. In the upstairs floor, you can watch an amazing video about the history of the palace. The gardens and the nature is breathtakingly stunning. The grass hill which leads up to Montseratt Palace is amazing to climb as you see the palace towering above. An amazing experience, I definitely recommend if you are visiting and like to walk around enjoying nature.

Wow. What a beautiful palace! This Moorish palace has beautiful carving that are very intricate and ornate. If you visit Sinatra, this is something you shouldn't miss. It's a bit further out compared to the other more popular places, so it's best to just take a taxi here. It's very different in its architectural style. Best thing is that it's not so crowded, because it's less well known and harder to get to. The Palace is not very big and has a museum exhibiting it's history, but the surrounding park and garden is quite large.

Beautiful garden and palace. Definitely worth visiting and check out the gardens as well. Important to note is that the park closes at 7pm but the last bus leaves the park at 6:10pm and there are no taxis or tuk tuks around to take you back to the city. It is about a 45 minute walk on a narrow road to get back.

Criminally underrated! Stunning building and surrounding park area. After a chaotic morning in central Sintra and the Palace of Pena, Monserrate was a welcome breath of calming, fresh air. The lawn area by the main building is such a great place to have a picnic, hang out for bit, or roll down the hill like a kid again!

It is a very lovely palace. You do not have to wait to purchase the tickets and payments is by card. It is breathtaking and almost impossible to gush around the beauty of the environment in one day. You'd find the fountain, the vast expanse of garden, rose garden, there's a cafeteria for snacks and drinks although it was not opened when I visited. The top of it is, if you are a nature person, you can actually hike from the National palace, to the Quinta da Regaleira and then the Monserrate palace. I must warn you it is not for the faint hearted because it is about 1hr 20minutes walk, but if you love nature, it is absolutely worth it. You'd not even get touched by the sun as the trees is covers the ground well and I had a very light cardigan on. I wasn't hot at all. It is a lonely place to walk, so be with a friend or have a list of music to listen to, but it is very safe and at every point in time, you'd find some other lion hearted persons hiking the same journey. There are a lot of historical points and buildings you’d get to see along the way as a plus. But this is usually taken by bus, car hire, bikes or whatever means of communication you chose except the train. Oh, I forgot, inside the palace can be accessible by persons with special needs as there is a ramp, the palace has a collection of arts and it is well preserved. You can watch a brief of the history at the show room.upstairs the castle if you want to. You can sit in the vast expanse of the garden and enjoy a hot afternoon breeze. It's my favorite palace in Sintra because I am a nature’s person.

The grounds around the palace are wonderful. The variety of trees and other plants is impressive, and the atmosphere (except when you find yourself near the loud citizens of a certain neighboring country) is relaxing. My only complaint would be the condition of the rose garden, although that is easily explained by the need to save water during the summer.

A breathtaking architectural and botanical gem. The palace itself is a stunning example Romanticism, with its intricate Moorish and Gothic-inspired design elements. The surrounding park is equally captivating, featuring lush gardens, exotic plants, and scenic pathways that lead to charming follies and water features. Overall, Monserrate offers a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it a must-visit destination for travelers exploring the Sintra region.

One of the most interesting palaces I ever visited. Everything is about simmetry in the palace .... so rewarding. It's not worth visiting the roses garden during august but everything else is amazing.

This is the most beautiful park you can imagine and there's a scenic view combined with the prettiest little castle and the option of finishing with a cold beer in the cafe. Highly recommended when in Sintra. As a matter of fact; skip Sintra and just visit this gem.

Absolutely beautiful palace, incredibly renovated (check the before/after photos on the rooms of the first floor) and very interesting history, of this pearl in the beautiful mountain of Sintra. The gardens are very well kept, and beautiful laid out. Plenty of parking spots outside the main gate. Definitely worth a visit!

This place is amazing. We were lucky enough to have really mixed light and weather while we visited. The history and buildings are incredible. The tour is a must. It can get very busy, but worth visiting later in the day as the sunsets can be epic from the grounds.

This place is magical! I was amazed by all the beautiful trees and plants. So nice to wander around, it really feels like you’re in another world. You have to be in good condition tho, it’s quite a hike if you wanna see it all. The palace itself is really cool and so different from the other palaces in the area. I went late in the afternoon and managed to avoid the crowds, which made it extra special.

All in all a beautiful place to visit when in Sinatra. From the romantic style ‘forest’ with a myriad of different flora and fauna to the main palace itself, it is a sight to experience and also to take in all the vibes. Then comes the over the top palace itself with tasteful architectural designs from the past. Don’t miss the interesting history to the palace itself too. Hint: ancient chapel + rich men = lavish villa. War = rich men no more = dilapidated villa = acquired back by the government. Expect to spend ~2h here!

This place us magical! Transports you into a fantasy garden world that makes you forget another world exists. Portugal has a whole has amazing architecture and this site is no different. Jazz plays on the grounds in the back by a live band. Easy to access and just sit and listen if you like. Had a phenomenal time and is a must-see is the UNESCO certified city of Sintra

Besides amazing interior of the palace (recommendation to consider details) the other breathtaking thing is the botanic garden around. One of the best gardens. The variety of plants is unbelievable, especially taking into account that all those are outside. Count for ~2 hours to slowly get around the territory.

Having travelled through PT, I can say with some conviction that Monserrate is my favourite site on the country’s mainland. Contrasted to the Sintra palaces that get more tourism traffic from Lisbon, this absolute marvel is still relatively quiet. The architectural details of the building are exquisite and the nature around it is truly awe-inspiring. A must see!

It is really a great place to visit in Sintra! The whole site including the park is such a quaint and relaxing place. When we arrived we bought the tickets at the entrance and there was no queue. The style of the palace is very unique and it is interesting to read the story of the various owners. After visiting the palace we spent time wandering around the gardens, it is literally a botanical garden with many different types of areas. Everything is so well taken care of. The ruin in the park was also something I was not expecting and loved to see. Sintra is a fantastic place and there are many things to visit but I definitely recommend this one if you have enough time!

Sehenswerter Park und Schloss. Es blüht alles herrlich auch im Januar. Parken kann man direkt davor, das geht easy. Ticket sollte man online kaufen. Wir waren gegen Mittag da, das Kassenhaus war nicht besetzt und ohne Ticket wär man nicht reingekommen.

Beautiful castle - Ornate 19th-century mansion with Moorish, Gothic & Indian influences, set in botanical gardens. Definitely a place to visit, beautiful and interesting interiors, richly decorated and very stylish. Visited 1h before closing time andnit was perfect, no other visitors which made for beautiful pictures. Big garden and park domain, easily to spend half a day on the premises if you have the time.

Lovely park, with a wide range of tipes of vegetation, the Mexican garden is amazing as well as everything in the park. The Palace is beautiful, it matches perfectly with the environment.

  • 5/5 Mitr F. 4 years ago on Google
It was built by Francis Cook as a summer residence. He was a textile millionaire and art collector from Britain and India was a British colony. He managed to bring 8 marble jaali windows from Jaipur and fix it here in the first floor of main atrium (central octagonal hall) as a parapet wall. Just before the entrance of the palace is the arch called Indian arch and opposite to it is the roman arch with a water tank. The Indian arch does have a sad history - it was looted from India, as a spoil of war, after the British crushed the Indians who involved in the First War of Indian Independence in 1857.

The garden was absolutely magnificent, the in- and exterior of the palace itself, however, is incomparable with the beautiful art displayed in many Arabian palaces or mosques.

Pleasant place to visit, really nice palace but not so monumental like Pena palace. Surrounded by tematical gardens, a bit dried in September.

  • 4/5 Scott M. 4 years ago on Google
This site is beautiful and an architectural wonder, and the expansive gardens are well worth strolling through, especially if you have an appreciation of plants. This place is underrated; though only a short distance from Sintra, it is eclipsed by the better-known Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira. Getting there from Sintra is easy - take the 435 bus from behind the train station which makes a circular route, with a stop right at the the entrance. Recommended.

(Translated by Google) A beautiful place, both the palace and the gardens (of roses, Mexican, of ferns, the grassy meadow in front of the palace ...). It transmits a special peace. You can get lost in its ways. We loved the abandoned mini church (near the fern valley). The cafeteria is also very very nice (you have tea of all kinds, even roiboos). It is a 40-minute walk from Sintra but you can take a bus (I think 435). There is enough space to park in front if you are driving. By the way, if you buy the ticket online to the palace / gardens you save 50 cents. A wonder that you have to visit in Sintra.

This is definitely worth a visit AND you can park right at the place, which is unusual for the Sintra parks. We spent 1.5hrs in the grounds + palace. All of the many palaces we’ve seen in Portugal are these imposing, grandiose and almost overwhelming works of art. Monserrate was a pleasantly surprising change. It’s a much smaller, romantic oasis nestled in a sprawling forest of everything from roses to succulents to exotic flowers I’ve never seen before, all shadowed by ancient trees with roots that are determined to keep them around forever, crawling over the ground. But as though to not be judged by its small size, the amount of intricate, painstaking detail packed into the palace is more than any other I’ve seen. Every inch of the walls and ceilings are carved with beautiful detail. Over the centuries among various owners, it has welcomed artists, musicians, journalists and even people fleeing the Nazis’ grip during WWII.

A must visit when in Sintra. The Palace is stunning. It blends Gothic, Arab and Indian influences. The Music Room and the Central Atrium are stunning. And the Park is great to explore with its themed gardens. We strolled through the Fern Valley onto the ruins of a Chapel, then to the Mexican Garden and finally the Rose Garden before we visited the Palace. We stopped to marvel at the great diversity of the plants and show many curiosities to our young son, such as unusual mushrooms and vegetation.

A ‘hidden’ gem in the gardens of Sintra. The decoration and British romantic design is astounding. The Monserrate palace was a summer house for a British family, and it is particularly interesting because it was a palace inhabited up until just 60 years ago. Additionally the renovation work performed since 2011 was spectacular and brought to life what we can imagine was the palace when people actually lived there. On one of the rooms there is a video of one of the family members that took care of the hose for the owners who only came o the summer. If you take 10 minutes to listen to the video it will make the visite even more meaningful. Another important detail is that there is a small replica of the palace so that people who for some reason cannot see the palace can touch it and understand it’s overall structure. I found ir particularly inclusive.

Park and palace are beautiful, full of lush ornaments. Pity that just like the Quinta da Regaleira, there are no furnished rooms. But the walk inside the palace is very nice. The park and gardens are also vast and diverse, with plenty of foreign species and so on. You can even have a picnic on the gardens and sunbathe. Great, a must for the Sintra experience.

They are working on refurbishing this Palace so there isn't a real lot to see, but the house and gardens were both beautiful and well worth going to. We were told the last bus would be by at 7p. It came at 645p so be out front a little early.

This is an extremely ornate palace with fascinating architectural elements. In addition to the palace itself, you can also stroll through the various gardens surrounding the property. The entry cost for one adult is 8€ (purchased online). The site is a bit farther from the historical district of Sintra, but I found that you can avoid some of the crowds that are often found at more popular areas (Park and National Palace of Pena and Moorish Castle).

The palace of Monserrate and the gardens around are wonderfully pretty. And with such a serene ambiance and different beautiful parts! It's probably the less crowded place in Sintra. Which is a REALLY important point to mention. The way to go there though, is dreadful. Sintra is not equipped to receive so many tourists (and shame on us, we are part of it). We had to wait so much for a bus to go there and the people are fighting to go in. After waiting 30 minutes, the driver didn't wanted to let us enter as so many people that arrived after us rushed to take us over. Had a bit of a "rush hour in Paris" vibe. Definitely not relaxing. That's why, as a general comment, I would not really recommend to go to Sintra, or at least not during summer.

  • 5/5 Jan K. 1 year ago on Google
The Palace is a gorgeous building and not a pigsty with low brick walls like the thumbnail picture. The Palace itself is beautiful and the exhibit is the best organised and informationaly rich I've seen in Lisboa, though they currently still lack greater number of exhibits.

This is one of my favourite palaces in Sintra. Hidden in the green Sintra mountain, lies this beautiful palace. You walk through a beautiful garden to the palace. It is so green and beautiful and that makes the walk really enjoyable. There are several hiking trails that take you to the palace. The palace is beautiful to see. It invites you to take nice pictures and you can also visit the palace from the inside. The palace is situated on a large green lawn where you can chill out in the shade or in the sun. The palace itself is not very big, but the combination with the beautiful garden makes a visit to this palace really worthwhile! I recommend you to buy your tickets in advance on the official Sintra website. This saves waiting time as it can be very busy in the summer.

We arrived on a cloudy, damp day and *still* we give the palace and gardens 5 stars. It’s a totally atmospheric place to visit. Lose yourself in the 20th century grandeur of the palace or wander round the mystical grounds. ps. take a 425 bus from Sintra; it stops right outside the gate.

What a beautiful and unique palace, with an interesting history of owners through the years. No crowds at all- we almost felt like we had the place to ourselves. The palace's Indian, Moorish, and Gothic influences make the whole setting feel surreal and mystical. The grounds are beautiful to walk, with well-groomed trails, unique flora, and places to sit and take in the views along the way. The palace itself has many areas to explore on multiple levels, with informational signs posted about the history. There is also a very nice and reasonably-priced cafe on the grounds as well.

  • 5/5 M. J. 11 months ago on Google
I walked to the Palace from the centre of Sintra, and it was an hour and ten minutes walk - very relaxing. The Palace is incredible with amazing grounds and views around it. The cafe is very nice too - good tea and sandwiches. I spent at least 5 hours here. It's a very soothing place to be. Once you arrive here you likely won't want to leave.

  • 5/5 J D. 11 months ago on Google
Beautiful. I think this was our favourite of the monuments in Sintra. We went late in teh day - about 4 - and had no trouble parking right next to the site and headed right in. There were few others there, so the experience was quiet and magical. The gardens and grounds are lovely. Waterfalls, large ponds filled with water lilies and perfect reflections, an abandoned church-like structure that has an incredibly romantic air… And the palace is beautiful. A bit of a mishmash of styles, but somehow it works. The lacework in the arches both inside and out, the gorgeous rotunda of the music room… it really is wonderful. Visit. It’s worth it. We downloaded the audio guide and enjoyed listening to that as well along the way.

  • 5/5 M A. 10 months ago on Google

This place is unique, you will find nothing like this in all Sintra, it's a hidden Gem, I love the fact that is not that famous, so it's not full of people! It's the only Muslim inspired structure in all Sintra and it's probably my favorite of all! Each of these landmarks have a small souvenir shop, love them all, but this place takes a special place in my vacations! Also you get to enjoy it's gardens, I think they are perfect for a Pic nic as well

A personal art project of a rich art collector Englishman. Beautiful carvings inside and good information of the history. The gardens are even more beautiful, with probably hundreds of plant species, trees arranged in a way which makes you feel like you're in paradise. Take time to relax and enjoy the gardens, although keep well covered as there are ants that bite on the lawn. The cafe had the nicest (and sourest) lemon slushie, as well as a variety of cakes and sandwiches. Bathrooms were clean. Hop on hop off bus available although the park isn't as big as Pena.

Take the train to sintra and once you get out of the station go to the bus stop there is a little bus that goes there for max 5 € Absolutely perfect, everything is amazing. The gardens are super cute and the Palace is stunning😍 not super touristy as other places so super chill to walk around and stuff. You do not need to buy tickets beforehand, do take some comfy shoes and clothes. Totally worth it :) there is a cafeteria there in case you want some snacks otherwise take yours and have a picnic in the gardens. A most on your visit to Lisbon.

This was actually my favorite palace visit on my Sintra trip! We ended up walking from town centre there and back, which was totally do-able, about 45mins, some uphill, but mostly flat. You dont have to book in advance just pay at the entry. Not many tourists were here when I visited, around 3pm on a Wednesday, which made it nice and peaceful to stroll around the gardens. There is a stunning ruin within the gardens that took my breathe away! The palace itself is so beautiful 😍, inside and out. You can go inside and explore the rooms inside and read about the history, taking your time with less people. Definitely recommend if you prefer peace and tranquility and like to take time to appreciate this beautiful palace. There are plenty of toilets and a tuktuk that can drive you straight to the palace and back if you prefer not to walk through the gardens.

  • 5/5 Tanya B. 6 months ago on Google
Stunning park with church ruins that are beautifully overgrown. The Palace itself is intricate and beautiful. The grounds were open at 9am to stroll leisurely without any other people, that’s the way to truly enjoy them. The Palace opens at 9:30, again only minimal people so loud voices didn’t spoil the serenity.

Amazing architecture, interior design and garden-just stunning! We came right before closing, on a rainy day which is likely why I was able to get such great photos with less people around. A pretty unique place worth a visit! The palace has a rich and quite interesting history involving Portuguese nobles, English business men, caretakers and figures from WWII then the Portuguese government! The gardens are lavish and boast many types of plants and trees! There's even a Bar/Caffè and a Restaurant for those that wish to eat or have a brunch! Tickets are for sale currently for 8 euros for adults and less for children!

Wow, such an incredible historical site. This is one of the less visited palaces of Sintra which gives the visitor a better opportunity to enjoy the rich detail of the ornate exteriors and interiors without the crowds. Purchased our ticket online the same day. We got there around 3pm and spent about 1.5 hours exploring. They also have a great coffee shop/ restaurant with lots of seating. Truly a gem and worth visiting while in Sintra.

  • 5/5 Gil M. 6 months ago on Google
Sintra was the best attraction in the Lisbon area. We visited only this palace, which I was surprised to find out it was privately owned, like other palaces around that belonged to aristocrats. There is a 10-minute walk through lovely gardens to get to the house if you go straight there. This place is huge. We used the bus that comes every 20 minutes or so, and on our way back to the train station, we took a tuktuk, which was quicker and cheap.
