We loved spending a couple of hours climbing the walls of the old castle. It is a workout but the views are spectacular. It was very windy the day we were there, late June, so you may want to take a jacket and something to contain long hair. The entrance was 8€ each for us. There were pretty nice views of Pena Palace from one of the watchtowers.

Breathtaking view, worth the admission ticket. Can be really windy! The hiking trail can be tricky as there are parts with mud, but really a rewarding experience - the surrounding greenery is like a heaven on earth.

Definitely buy tickets in advance! They rely only on automated machines that are very slow. Definitely recommend going here it’s beautiful!

Definitely worth doing, but there isn't an actual castle there. It's a long wall with a few towers. The path gets narrow in places and it is a heck of a climb to the top. The views are amazing.

First time here but 2nd time in Sintra! More exciting than Pena in the sense that it's more of walking on heights, feels like you are really walking a fort's walls. Lots of steps so be prepared! Cam see Pena Palace from here. Tickets were available for purchase at the entrance but we bought them online and made for smoother trip.

Mouros Castle and Palace of Pena are the first two sites you would want to visit. My recommendation is that go to Palace of Pena first and walk down about a mile from the palace to the Mouros Castle. Bus wait is almost the same as the walking time and you get to enjoy the nature if you walk. Get your tickets online in advance and have some food with you. Note that this is not castle, so there is not an actual building. You will just walk on the remainders of the castle walls which is still a great experience. The views from the walls are also fascinating.

One of the sights you must visit while in Sintra / Lisbon. Wonderful views from the top of the stairs on every side. A bit challenging climbing all of them in windy weather but definitely worth it once you reach the top. The views over the surrounding areas are truly breathtaking and worth enjoying for a while. Take your time and sit around while taking in the views. Good viewpoint over Pena Palace as well in the days with a clear sky.

The path to reach the castle is challenging but enjoyable. It is filled with flowers in the winter months. There are well trimmed bushes, trees, various structures, bridges, and surprises! You will find a beautiful photo on every turn. The higher the elevation, the farther you can gather your view in one frame. With the crispy, clear blue sky, you will be spoiled by the view. You should plan at least 3 hours to hike this round trip. If you are in a hurry, there's always transportation available for you to get to the top!

Great views from the wall! This is a beautiful restored treasure! There are lots of areas that are very accessible, but if you have mobility issues, there are some irregular stairs and steep climbs as well as areas without railings.

The Moorish Castle offers fantastic views from its peak. The journey to the top is a relaxing and relatively easy walk, perfect for visitors of all ages. Sections of the castle are original, adding a sense of authenticity to the experience. Overall, the castle is incredibly interesting and definitely worth a visit for anyone exploring Sintra.

The westernmost point in continental Europe. A beautiful view high up from the water. The sunset was lovely. Very windy, at least when my wife and I visited in February, so be prepared. There is a souvenir shop, snack bar, and restaurant on site, which was a nice reprieve from the wind.

Amazing Place with a stunning view as well. Not really far from more notorious Sintra Palace and definitely worth a visit. I suffer from vertigo and let me tell you, in some places it wasn't easy for me to keep going on those stairs, but the views were clearly worth it.

Centuries of history speak to you from these ancient walls. The views of Sintra from here are hard to beat. You need to be fit for the climb but the effort is definitely worth it. You just feel on top of the world there. Excellent and highly recommended.

Sintra area has few castles to offer. As each of them is different, each person finds his favorite castle. This one is mine. The place is magical. Composed out of ruins and gradually mixed with nature, it's hard not to chill there, even with a lot of tourists around you. Expect one or two hours of walk if you want to see it all. For me it was definitely worthy.

So interesting and beautiful place. There so many trees around the castle, so its not so hot even in very warm weather when you go to the castle from the parking. Better to get by car, save your strength

This is one of the most EPIC sites I have been. But be warned, you need to not be afraid of heights or you must be in great physical health to climb all the way to the top. The view from the top is absolutely stunning. It reminds me a little bit of the great wall of China though I have never been there. You can walk almost all the way around, and you can see the entire town from above. You can also see the Pena castle from the top. Be careful because there are some places don’t have railings. This is a must do if you are in Sintra.

Very vast grounds to walk around and explore. It was raining and foggy when we went, but I’m sure the views would’ve been spectacular if it was sunny. Note that the steps along the wall can be quite steep, slippery when it’s raining and there’s no guard rail. There are two cafeterias there, but one was closed (due to low season) and the other sells takeaway and is outdoors. The Moorish castle is a short walk from Pena (10 min downhill), but it is extremely difficult to get a ride here since all the cars go to Pena. Your best bet is to walk to Pena Palace or buy a 434 bus ticket (13 euros) that allow you to hop on hop off at the major sights of Sintra (there’s a stop just outside of the ticket office), around 20-30 min wait.

Beautiful experience. I walked all the way up avoiding the roads full of tourists and took a lovely trail, it took me around 1 hour, comfy shoes are a must and consider it might get slippery on the way down, the air is very moist and the pavement is made of rocks. There is a ticket machine to enter the area of the castle ticket is €12 for adults, many older people were complaining about having to use the machine so maybe a ticket office would be appreciated buy the elderly who come up a long way to visit the castle! The view is incredible, bare in mind there is no protection so it’s highly dangerous for kids, I was getting a heart attack seeing them wondering freely on the castle walls.

I really enjoyed visiting this castle! The views from walking along the ramparts are breathtaking. Just be careful and watch your step, they don’t have guardrails in most spots. I recommend visiting the castle first before you head to the Peña palace.

Maravilloso.

This is such a lovely and peaceful place. It's a good hike around the walls of the fort, and there are gorgeous views of the villages and countryside below. There are also two cute cats that have claimed the palace grounds as their own, and if you're lucky, they'll come by to say hello.

AMAZING! Do not miss this place while in Sintra. The surroundings are stunning and the view breathtaking. The history behind it is worth knowing and the info boards spread around help you do just that. Explore every corner and path you come across. Can't say enough good things about it.

Yes a Moorish Castle was here and built over earlier settlements - going back to the neolithic. Then it was a Christian region with a tiny church- on a tall hill , then in the late 1800s it was mostly in ruins which made it an ideal place for Ferdinand II to celebrate it by adding more “Romantic era” ruins - crenellations on walls towers with stone steps and stone seats and gardens and flowers and stone paths everywhere. -the views are outstanding🤩.Salazar the dictator also loved the idea of “Romantic ruins” and also “repaired” it’s ruins to be a touch more scenic. Great place to take a date or write idylls of nature. It’s so gosh darn…, what’s the word?

Really enjoyed exploring the ruins and walking on the castle walls. The views are just stunning, I think I may have liked this more than the Palace. If you can, you should buy the tickets in advance, when we arrived there was quite a long line because the ticket machines were having problems. We just bought ours online so were able to skip the line.

Awesome experience! Really worth a visit and one of my top recommendations for Sintra! It's a nice uphill hike, not super long but decently strenuous. I especially recommend going for sunset! The view is amazing! You get a nice view of the Palace on the other hill also! It's worth noting that the accessibility by car/taxi/autorickshaw is in the opposite side of the hill than the walking path, and if you choose to walk you take the back roads from the historical center and use the hiking trail in my opinion, as the motor ways and roads stretch around the hills and cover much longer distances. All in all one of my favorite castles so far in Portugal!

Absolute must stop in Sintra. The steep walk there is an adventure on it's own but the view from up top makes it worth it. The ruins are beautiful but the moneymaker is the view you get from up there. If you're in Lisbon, just take the direct train from Rossio station and you'll get there in under an hour.

Some spectacular views including that of the Pena palace. If you have to choose between Pena palace and Moorish Castle for short trip in Sintra, go for the Moorish Castle. To arrive here you can take bus 434, the tickets for which can be bought from the driver. If you plan to spend the day in and around the monuments of Sintra, it makes sense to get a 24h bus pass for 11€.

Incredible 8th century medieval castle on a high hilltop. Spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The parapet walk is amazing with its granite blocks interlinking boulders and cliffs as it snakes across the hillside. A must do on a trip to Sintra. A wonderful experience.

Amazing castle with breathtaking views. Make sure to hike both sides of the wall. The left side is higher and has great views of the coast and Pena Palace. Some areas do not have railings and will have to be careful if crowded.

Awe inspiring. Difficult to conceive how this fort was built without the use of technology. A must see in Sintra. Easily accessible and so large that you don't really notice other tourists. I'd consider returning. Amazing views!

Breathtaking views. Unbelievable views. You can even see Pena Palace in the distance. It's 400 km from the entrance to the Castle itself which provides lovely green walks. The Castle Walls themselves have a lot of steps but it's worth it for the views. We went when the weather was gorgeous and so sunny and warm which made it even better.

Amazing views. We decided to walk from Sintra and didn't regret! 30-45 minutes and beautiful landscape. Pena Palace is stunning and you can see if from the castle. Was not able to pay with cash which is quite disappointing especially if you don't bring your card or having to pay transaction fees online

Wonderful place, the hike to the castle is beautiful, so much green it felt like we were in a jungle. The view from the castel is mesmerizing, definitely recommended to climb all of the stairs. On the top it can be a bit windy, a sweater can be quite useful. The cats were cute!

Amazing views over the area. Paved walkway to the castle, however some parts can be steep! Fine enough for pushchairs and buggys. Would recommend also, not suitable for above, but the walk around the walls and to the top of the castle for the best views. Expect to spend about 1hr-2hr here, but the price is about right for what is here. Do *not* drive here!

Loved every minute of this visit to Castelo dos Mouros. Costs about 8 Euros to get into and was well worth it to walk around the castle grounds and enjoy the views of the city below. Be prepared to do a lot of stair climbing and wear comfortable shoes and always watch your step, some of the pathways are very narrow with no guardrails.

Lots of great views. Lots of climbing up for the views. Nicely restored castle. Beware of the vertical needed to really enjoy the place though. There are toilets inside the gates with the small cafe. Tickets CAN be purchased at the gates, if you take a Bolt to the guard house.

If you can purchase tickets beforehand, I recommend doing it. Castle is really beautiful, located on a hill with breathtaking views. You can get to the entry point on a car or if you hike up the hill. From entry point to the actual castle, there is a bit of a hike, probably 15 minutes, and so it might night be accessible for everyone. There is a small cafe in there and a bathroom for a quick rest. Btw, you can also purchase tickets for Pena palace from here, which will save you a lot of time.

An absolute pleasure to visit the castle. Its bit underrated. It doesn't have colorful architecture but from every corner it gives pleasant views of Sintra. It has bit of elevation. So I would suggest to carry some water. It's just 5 minutes walk from Pena Palace entrance. So I would suggest visit both for a day.

Beautiful castle wall and batteries that seems part Great Wall and part medieval fortress. No real internal rooms to visit but the location, surrounded by moss-covered rocks and lush forest is magical. Can be seen in less than an hour.

I would like to give warning after coming back from this place. It is not to go with kids. not for the kids. avoid it. Especially during the storm weather condition. the outer walls are tall enough, but inner walls are too low and passages are very narrow. and there are not enough handrails to hang onto , and very high. some points there are no guardrails at all. it is very scary to elder people too. When I was there on December 1st, the rainstorm hit the castle , my hat was blown away. The view from top to look down Rich Sintra as well as Lisbon and ocean is spectacular. and walking up from Sintra center is rewarding. If you are physically fit, walking up hill is good choice. takes only 30 minutes to 45 minutes.

It's an amazing marvel how this place has stood here for so long and kudos to Portugal for keeping this preserved. You can see how they kept on eye and protected they city from this vantage point. You will get some workout climbing some sections of the wall. You can see an amazing view all around from here. I would definitely recommend visiting here if you are in Sintra and visiting National Pena Palace.

The walks along the walls of Castelo dos Mouros provide spectacular views of the forests, towns and ocean. The steps will give you a workout, but it is worth it. Only downsides were a.) I couldn't find as much information about all the structures that would have previously existed, and b.) the food options in the cafeteria are quite limited. But still, this is not a site you'd want to miss.

It was amazing it's a good hike to get there,if you don't use the bus, I didn't use the bus, added to the adventure and you really get to grips with how high up it is. The place is beautiful allow a few hours to take it all in, I done both moorish castle and Pena Palace in one day, as they are close by each other. If you buy both tickets together you get a 5% discount not much of a discount but it's ok if its a family of adults and teens paying full price. The views are absolutely beautiful and the cafe on site was reasonably priced. It is definitely a must see, the upkeep is amazing it's like stepping back in time

Gorgeous castle. If you find a parking spot close to the road that goes up, don't let yourself be talked out of parking there but some guys running around there. They park their own cars there and tell you, the bring you up for a fee. And of you get one of those spaces they will tell you, you'll be fined by the police, even tho 50 cars are parked there.

This was on our list when we started the tour in Portugal as it is the most western part of Europe as a continent. We went there with a rent a car from Lisbon. It was really nice to walk around and have an amazing view of the Atlantic Ocean, so this is one of the recommendations to visit while in Portugal.

There is a gift shop from where you can buy a certificate for 11 euro that you've been there. If you're a nature lover, you will love this place. To get there, you can take bus number 403 from Sintra or Cascais. It's an amazing experience- highly recommend it!

The Castle of the Moors (Portuguese: Castelo dos Mouros) is a hilltop medieval castle located in the central Portuguese civil parish of Santa Maria e São Miguel, in the municipality of Sintra, about 25km northwest of Lisbon. Built by the Moors in the 8th and 9th centuries, it was an important strategic point during the Reconquista, and was taken by Christian forces after the fall of Lisbon in 1147. It is classified as a National Monument, part of the Sintra Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

You don't need to be athletic, be 10 in physical shape to go from end to end, but if you are a person who gets tired easily, better not try not to get in the way and get in the way, because there are usually many people doing the route, it is disputed and there are many narrow stretches. The ruin is very impressive due to its exposed location on the mountain and the tremendous amounts of rock, keeping in mind the century in which it was built. This place was UNREAL. Please make sure you take proper sneakers/hiking shoes/ etc. As it is a lotttt of extensive walking and climbing. Climbing the walls was super cool—it really makes you feel how it would have felt back then and sincerely puts you in the shoes of past soldiers/knights. The views would have been amazing but we went on a rainy/foggy day. Still got a lot of great photos because the mist added to the vibe of the place for sure. Castle kitty was 10/10 of an accepts pets as a travel fare. There is a lot to see—dedicate about 3 hours to this if you get the chance.

The castle is in good condition and has great views of the Palace of Peña and Sintra National Palace. I had mixed feelings on the visit though - there’s not a lot of history or signage internally, the cafe is iffy bitty and signs to the toilets confusing. However it is well preserved and has spectacular views of the other two palaces. Getting there - It is a 5-10 minute walk down from Peña Palace to the ticket entrance then another 400 meters peaceful wooded walk to the actual castle entrance. (You can also walk the 900m uphill from historic center, though after walking down that way afterwards wouldn’t recommend it unless you like an uphill hike as the people coming up looked a little rough) Tickets - Only one of two machines were working at the main entrance near road (400m from castle), so after waiting 5 minutes and barely moving we just bought them online while standing there. There was also a third machine at the actual castle entrance that seemed to be working.

There is a small café, seating area and public toilets inside the grounds next to the entrance. The walk back down to Sintra through the park was pretty quick, and quite well signposted. It was also a really lovely walk, but perhaps not so good for those with mobility issues.

Wow! What an amazing place. Great views. You can see the Peña palace from here. You can also see the Atlantic Ocean from here. Would definitely recommend to visit here. We have had an amazing day 😌

This location is so amazing! It can be challenging for those of us that are older, so if you're not fully mobile and at least in partially good shape, you should avoid this place (i am mid 50s with 2 bad knees and ankles, but in good cardiovascular shape and it was ok).

Nice views from the top, after about 1 hour hike. The trails going up are very nice, they look like a garden, especially on the lower half. Once up, not much to visit other than walking on the castle's walls. Views are spectacular!

This is such a cool landmark! You can visit the castle and go up the stairs right to the top! The views are breathtaking and you can see all of Sintra :) we had no wait time as we got tickets in advance!

It was an unforgettable experience being able to walk through a medieval castle. The view also made it more exciting. We were able to see the Pena Palace from a certain point of the castle. There’s also steep areas so be ready to climb up.

More like a fortress than a castle, the view is incredible! Watch out for the winds tho! It has a small coffee shop but mostly for quick snacks, the tour is quick but the entrance and the path to get this is beautiful, between stone stairs and trees. There is a beautiful trial either to go up or go down ( I'll recommend going down back to the historical town center of Sintra)

Nice walk in the park both solo and with friends and family. Nice views of Sintra village. Interesting they have the different flags throughout the years of conquest. Can be windy, so brace yourselves. Looking from the town centre looked like a visit around sunset would be great.

You can see a very beautiful scenery up there. You could reach the top within half an hour walk. So its not a very difficult climb.

The castle is a shortish walk up (and I stress up) from historic Sintra or a 10 min walk down from Peña Palace. It’s definitely worth visiting. Not as crowded and Peña you you get to walk through it. Some great views from the two parts of the castle. It is a lot of stairs/steps and some rough stone to walk on in areas. But so nice and cool with a breeze and the ability to walk through such history.

This castle was incredible! You can take a car/bus to the pathway to the castle, then enjoy a comfortable walk/hike out there. Lots of shade but probably pretty warm in the summer so go early. Very few lines, and not as many people as the palacio. More enjoyable because of how natural it is, and the nature you walk through. I wouldn’t recommend strollers, but you’ll want a baby carrier for sure (we used one). You can go really high on the walls, but be careful with young children as their aren’t many safety precautions (which I prefer because it’s more natural). Bring water and snacks, as their cafeteria has almost nothing and the line is always long. Still, I’d love to go back. Awesome visit

Very nice castle on top a pretty high hill. Not too much to see inside as it's mostly walls, but we enjoyed the walk up and around. Unfortunately it was very foggy and cloudy when we went so we didn't get to enjoy the wonderful view.

I thought it was as fabulous as Pena Palace and the structure is just amazing. You have incredible views of almost everything. Definitely should go to it and skip the two closer to town. The walk from town to Mouros and Pena is a good walk.

A very unique, interesting, wonderful, great experience. I've seen it many times, I can't get tired of it. This is a must see. You need warm clothes, it's always cold and windy. Hiking boots and good condition are important.

The exterior os very beautiful. If you recognize even a little architecture you get the feeling it's been glued together. It's cool to see furniture eight where it was left.

My husband and I went in November on a Sunday around 1pm. There was no wait to get inside. It was a little chilly so bundle up. We bought our tickets in advance but you are able to purchase tickets on site both with a live person and on a screen. The views were amazing!! Plus you can also get several views of the Pena Palace and overlook of Sintra and the ocean.

Very cool place to walk around. Surrounding gardens are stunning as well so try and walk up to the castle. We were even able to walk from the Train Station - a lot of uphill but well worth it as you get to see a bit of the local surroundings.

Amazing place, a lot to see so plan it well. Many ways to approach it, from 1 hr hike to being driven to the entrance. For the climbers there is some special terrain. Highly recommand

An amazing experience climbing up the stairs to the summit. Pros: 1. Very well maintained castle 2. Amazing views Cons: 1. Steps are narrow 2. Be prepared for a steep climb The effort is worth it - highly recommended!

Add to your list of places to visit if you arw coming to Sintra - the view is exceptional and you get to walk the full wall of the castle. Peaceful grounds and well maintained, a highlight of our day Better than Pena Palace
