Very big, commercial winery with multiple tours. The tour is pretty standard, and the amount of barrels they have on display (with wine) is impressive. A couple really horrific things about this winery made me want to write this review - There is a large display of what I imagine are pilfered artifacts from Africa. They celebrate the fact that this winery I owned by a white family that pillaged Africa for its diamonds and minerals. - The wine tasting was of their poorest quality wines. I generally drink every drop of wine in a wine tasting, but the red and muscatel were undrinkable. There are plenty of lovely wineries in Portugal, safe your time and 10€ and go elsewhere.

A fabulous tour through the winery! The staff are incredibly friendly and have an excellent knowledge of the art, the facility and the production of their wines. We had a tasting of 3 wines at the end of the tour and all 3 were outstanding. The facility is adorned with art from France, Belgium, Italy, Africa, Netherlands and Portugal. Definitely worth a visit, we are so glad we stopped here.

Zuviel unnötige Erklärungen durch Tourguide, Ausstellung hat nichts mit Wein zu tun. Der Palastbesuch ist sehr zu empfehlen.

If you want to visit a palace, the price is 10 EUR, BUT you need to make a reservation in advance [several days before]. It takes 1.5h to visit the palace. Available languages: English, Portuguese. For the cyclists: be careful with this [see the photo below]. ------------------ Small update: All the visits start at Bacalhôa Winery Museum in Vila Nogueira de Azeitão, at the Wine Shop. You should be there 10 minutes before the trip starts. Bacalhôa Winery Museum and Bacalhôa Palace are different estates separated by 3 kilometers [see a map below]. The trip is made by the visitor's car, otherwise, you need to mention in your reservation that you don't have a car and they will use their bus (max - 6 customers). Minimum number of people to do the tour is 2. For children under 12 years old is free of charge. Other tours: - Exhibition Bacalhôa Winery Museum: duration 60 minutes; €6.00/ per person - Exhibition Bacalhôa Palace + Bacalhôa Winery Museum: duration 150 minutes; €14.00/ per person [!]Important: don't be late and check carefully the schedule if you have several tours in Azeitao.

Stay away if you want a wine tour. A forced art exposition ( not that good by the way ). The wines that they chose for a taste, absolutely of the lowest quality that the market has to offer. The facilities are clean but the acoustics are BAD. One needs to raise the voice couple of notches to be heard. The hostess nearly screaming. Bad, just bad quality of all services.

MUST SEE EVENT if your within a few hours away! Top shelf wines but the amazing part is the priceless art collection from 3 outstanding artists. Only $6.00 euros per person with private tour guide. Beautiful zen gardens with rich history and pride of ownership. Wish we could ship cases of wine back stateside. Our tour guides very knowledgeable and English speaking. Everyone spoke good English. Thank you for an outstanding tour.

We went to visit the place to do a wine tour as we have done in every country we travel to, when we got here first they spent an hour going over history of a palace, then another hour through an art gallery while offering us not even water. So if you are looking for a museum experience this is your place, if you are looking for wine tasting go somewhere else.

I’m giving a one star for 1) insensitivity to the holocaust with their “art” installation. It’s chilling and deeply unsettling to se a replica concentration camp gate on display and be told not to think any negative thoughts about it. 2) massive display of African artifacts that were definitely not obtained ethically. 3) But even without the morality issues The wine we sampled after the tour was significantly less than mediocre. For some reason our guide seemed proud to brag that they were offering us their absolute cheapest offerings. Hard pass - do not recommend.

The highlight of the visit is definitely the palace and its gardens. Second comes the wine tasting, where depending upon the tour guide little or lots of information is provided about the wines tasted. The wine museum and the other exhibitions are not really related to the topic "wine", but it is still one piece in the puzzle called Portugal. I think that the value for money is excellent and as usual it depends also upon the visitor what they make out of this experience. To avoid disappointment it is definitely a good idea to read about this experience on the company website.

We thoroughly enjoyed our wine tasting experience at Bacalhoa. After visiting another larger winery in the area and being disappointed, we decided to see if Bacalhoa was available. Our pourer, Tomas, was knowledgeable & friendly. He also spoke very good English! He went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed everything Bacalhoa has to offer. Their Moscatel (similar in style to a port, but lighter and more flavorful) is delicious and their pricing is very reasonable. I would recommend Bacalhoa highly!

One of the best winery experiences I’ve ever been to. We had an amazing guide with great sense of humour, fantastic tour around the palace...the 10yr old moscatel is fantastic 😋

Jose Maria de Fonseca is down the road and provides an infinitely better experience - go there. At Bacalhoa we were shouted at by staff, rushed through a tour with little to no actual wine info in an overcrowded space with swarms of people everywhere, shown stolen African art and artifacts and a reproduction of the gate at Auschwitz, we couldn’t hear our tour guide when he was explaining the wines we were drinking because the room was so crowded and noisy, and we were later shushed by another tour guide for quietly chatting. The grounds are beautiful - the tour was a huge disappointment.

We had a really nice visit and tasting in this winery. Our tour guide Mario was helpful and presented his knowledge about the palace and wine in fun and interesting way. The wine tasting was great as well, we were offered a nice selection of wines and had enough time to enjoy them. Sunni g up it was one of the highlights of the visit to this part of Portugal.

We had the full tour and greatly enjoyed our afternoon. The palace is quite remarkable. I would love to know more about the grape to bottle process. Bacalhoa is beautifully curated in every detail by people who really care about their craft. Wine is art and art is wine (I never appreciated that before).

Quick stop for a short wine tasting and discovery of their heritage. Liked the moscatelo 2018

This was one of the weirdest wineries I’ve ever experienced. The wine tasting tour consisted of an African art exhibit, a cellar with Portuguese tiles, and an exhibit of art from 3 holocaust survivors… I’m unsure how any of that relates to wine. If you can manage to skip all that, great, but the wine tasting is equally bizarre. When it came to the actual wine tasting, they had two tour groups in the one room, which meant each guide had to shout over the other group. Lastly, the 3 wine tastings were awful. I’m a wine drinker but certainly not a picky one, and neither my partner nor I could drink the wines. Now I’m told that this winery does have great wines, so maybe they don’t offer that up as part of a regular tasting, I’m not sure. They also make blue wine there… questionable. If I had my time back, I would’ve skipped this winery altogether.

We had the standard wine introduction. Good location, nice museum but the wines I tasted were too young / not to my taste. Still a great Portuguese winehouse not to miss !

We visited Bacalhoa via a guided tour this month. Our tour guide Mario was so kind, and well spoken during our tour. The Tile and Cask room is truly amazing to see and experience! Tasting at the end is worth it. You'll also be introduced to a few art exhibitions at the start of the tour that are impressive and very absorbing to take in, we felt. Prices direct to buy wine there are very reasonable, so if you like something while there, buy it and check-bag it home. Roman planted olive tree circa 300BC at the entrance is really something amazing. Thank you to all the staff there that made our visit very enjoyable.

We were looking for something to do on a rainy afternoon and this was a great activity. Our tour guide was very friendly and his English was great. The number of barrels in their storehouse was very impressive. And the wines were all absolutely delicious! Would recommend and very reasonably priced in their shop

We visited here on a motorcycle trip along the coast. Although we didn't do a tour, we did get the chance to taste this delicious wine. We were so lucky to have had Soraia as our host. Even as an intern, she was extremely knowledgeable about what we tried and most of all, incredibly hospitable and made the experience much better than it would have been without her. Soraia, we wish you all the best with your future endeavors. People like you are what make traveling to new countries so special. Kisses from France and the USA. ❤️

Very nice place and good guided tour around the palace and the winery. Good price for the combo tour, - with the palace and afterwards the tasting. The combo guided tour is on two locations with 3 km between.

We really enjoyed our visit with our guide, João. The cherry on top was the wine tasting at the end where we particularly appreciated the moscatel. The tour has got a balanced mixture of art and wine-making. In addition, the staff at the reception was very kind

What an amazing experience! Unexpectedly went above our expectations. We went thinking it was just a small tour of the grounds and ending with a wine tasting. We would of been happy with just that. But no, we toured the estates, gardens, art collection, wine cellar and so much more! Learned a lot of the history inside of the vineyards with connections to not only Portugal but England, US, Africa, Jewish refugees and much more. What a rich experience to be able to learn, view, touch and stand in the middle of history. I would highly recommend this experience to everyone. The staff was extremely friendly also! I can’t wait to go back!

We paid a short visit to the shop of this winery on our way from Cascais to Santiago do Cacem. The place is very nice and well maintained. The shop is well organized and clear. We bought a few bottles of rosé wine and some sparkling wine… When we tasted the wines, we were very satisfied! Good wines for a more than decent price! Price/quality very ok! The staff in the shop is very friendly and not pushy!

👍👍 A lovely small beach overlooked by the Rockalot Praia café and bar. It's great for a swim if you want to cool down in the heat and a couple of open air showers are available at the side of the café to wash off the salt water or sand. There's a DJ playing chilled out tunes on an evening and weekend....
