These beautiful stairs are a must see. They are the work of Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, who made them as a way to show his love to the city. The stairs are made from thousands of pieces of ceramics which were collected or donated, and some even painted by the artist. The area was very safe with many police present, but I would caution against walking too far from the area, as some of the surrounding area is not very safe for tourists. But the immediate area is full of amazing restaurants and souvenir shops, some of which have very unique items.

I visited Escadaria Selarón in the late after and I was amazed by the beauty and creativity of this place. The stairs are decorated with thousands of colorful tiles from different countries, creating a stunning mosaic that reflects the diversity and vibrancy of Brazil. The artist, Jorge Selarón, was a Chilean who dedicated his life to this project as a tribute to the Brazilian people¹. He transformed a simple staircase into a masterpiece of urban art. I was expecting the area to be unsafe, but I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly and welcoming the locals were. The drinks and food on the way to the top were cheaper than downstairs. The only downside was the huge line to take a picture at the stairs with Rio de Janeiro sign, but it was worth the wait. The view from the top was breathtaking and I felt like I was part of a living painting. Escadaria Selarón is a must-see attraction in Rio de Janeiro. It is not just a staircase, but a symbol of passion, culture, and creativity. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves art and wants to experience the true spirit of Rio. Cool place to take colorful pics. It will be a very short visit since to go all the way up won’t take more than 20 min. Is better to go with day light, otherwise the pics are not so great with the street lights. An small negative point might be that the surrounding streets don’t feel very safe at night, specially if you’re on your own.

2023 Nov. I had the best visit here. My pictures speak volumes. I was fortunate enough not to have many people around in this busy tourist spot of town. Great weather and time here. It's awesome to be here in this colorful steps. Most of the visitors are coming from the neighboring countries . All speak Portuguese sometimes Spanish. I wondered i didn´t hear English speaking tourists at this time. I was amused and amazed by this work of art! And the children loved to make it as a playground ;-) We came after 3 pm. so the Stairs started to become full of visitors posing here and there and every one is very busy taking pictures. We started to walk from the topmost of the stairs so it was not to difficult for us just to go downstairs. If you look the stairs from above going downstairs...they look normal and unpainted also destructed. But if you climb going upward then they are filled with colorful tiles and very attractive. You can see them in my pictures. But to come and see them personally is the most interesting part of it!

If you don't like crowds then I'm sorry, research the least crowded times and enjoy at your own pace. However we expected a crowd and enjoyed ourselves anyway! The historical value of the art work made us smile at how thoughtful and dedicated people can be! Please enjoy this walkway by the wonderful Chilean artist who's name is escaping me currently!?!!

Very beautiful. As someone from Rio, I went there the first time to show my girlfriend who is not from here. And I got very surprised. I should have gone before. It is very interesting. We really enjoyed seeing all the different tiles and it gets very pretty all the colors in the stair. I would recommend everyone to visit.

Everyone goes here, a real tourist place, and it's interesting and colorful so I get it. There is even an "Alaska" section which was cool (since I'm Alaskan) but it's crazy with people trying to get their Instagram photo. They kind of claim areas for their photo and you can't get through easily. Kind of a pathetic thing really, especially the women--trying so hard to look sexy and show that they've been there--but without really seeing anything. It's with a stop but there are other places in Rio that are better and more fun.

Some friends and I took a taxi here it was a Sunday afternoon. I felt perfectly safe walking the stairs lots of activity and lots of people. All in all I would recommend it just to do it but you're going to be done with the stairs and 20 minutes tops and if you want there's a few restaurants there as well as vendors with souvenirs.

Very beautiful place! Full of color and fun! There is a line to take a picture on the main part of the stairs, and there is a girl there that prints the pic into a tile, takes 10min I didn’t do that, because I did not had time, but it looked cool! If you have time, take it to look into the details, I found a tile from my hometown (Porto, Portugal) and that filled me with joy. There are tiles from more than 50 countries!

What a unique site! The amount of time and effort that went into creating this ever changing work of art is amazing. I found tiles from all over the world, and people for just as many countries visiting to see this site! Do not miss this!

I honestly did not think so much of this place the artwork is amazing but it's very busy with tourists and many whom do not respect their their surroundings. Unfortunately these stairs are in need of a desperate restoration. It's obviously quite a wonderful site for tourists however it needs some serious TLC! Yet another issue is the entire area is filled with homeless people and a lot of scams. Really unfortunate, am area with so much potential pretty much abandoned!

It is a must see attraction, but it is located in a sketchy area. So be mindful of surroundings. Protect you pocket because the pickpocketing happened often in this area. However, the steps are beautiful. Great place to take photos.

Amazing tiled artwork that is well worth a visit, we walked from Ipanema to here and was nice to take in all Rio had to offer. Some of the surrounding areas are a little more rough, so would be wary if you are going to take any diversions while there.

Loved this place and the art. Featured in Snoopdog's music video Beautiful. Steps are made up of tiles from different countries across the globe. I could spot few from India 🇮🇳. Tips: Try to visit at night as you will see the real beauty of this place and also less crowd to bother you for pics 📸. Please 🙏 Like if you find this helpful.

Very beautiful and unique place to visit. Many people were there in the afternoon, so it’s best to go early in the morning. Worth seeing and experiencing (doesn’t cost you anything but your time). There are so many small and subtle details to this work of art if you take your time and look closely. Enjoy!

Wow! What a fun, colorful place to see in Rio. Definitely a safe place to visit, but some of the surrounding areas are a bit questionable. Just take a taxi or Uber to here and you’ll be fine. There are a few stores here that sell souvenirs. You can even get a custom photo tile made quickly of your photo on the steps if you want. From here you can walk 2 blocks to the Aquaduct, and from there to the church. All very close and safe to walk to.

The work that went into decorating these steps is amazing. I could spend a lot of time looking at all the tiles and mosaics. This is a great place to take photos and to sit and relax or chill with friends. It is a lively area in the evening. No matter the time of day, there will be other people, and they will be in the background of your photos. There is also cool street art around the corner.

Beautiful! Just make sure you walk up otherwise you won't see anyrhing. Friendly street cats, drinks and caiparinhas available. Tourist shops at the bottom and if you get to the top you can continue up to Santa Teresa which is lovely. Plenty of people talking photos, keep a wary eye of your surroundings but you should be fine because of how busy it is.

Absolutely beautiful to see and explore. The staircase goes up quite a while so there is plenty to see in the art. Word of advice is to go early before it gets hot and crowded. There are a lot of people seeing a photo opportunity and it is hard to actually look at and appreciate the art of the staircase once it gets busy.

An important part of Rio de Janeiro. It must be seen, although it is very busy, many people stop by to take photos. Here you can have a caipirinha at 5 pesos, or to buy handcrafted jewelry. Be careful at your pockets because many people here don't come to see the stairs 😟. Overall it is an experience that you must try when in Rio de Janeiro.

I loved it because it feels different and special. It’s free to visit! I was amazed by how many people are there during the day. The area of Lapa is supposed to be a little dangerous but I found it perfectly nice and I spent the afternoon and early evening hanging out in a bar close by.

Nice piece of art of Rio the Janeiro city that you should visit during your trip because is a nice spot to take a photo, but don't expect something really amazing. I would recommend visit in the morning when it quiter, during the day is full of tourist taking selfies in every spot and at night can be a dangerous area.

This iconic place in Lapa, Rio de Janeiro is a must-see location if you’re visiting Brazil. The ceramic are beautiful and the access is entirely free. You can buy drinks like the tradition Lemon Caipirinha made with Cachaça and foods on the sides. Be aware of thieves when using your phones — particularly at night but don’t miss out on visiting it during daytime as it’s beautiful.

I recommend going early in the morning so it isn't to crowded. Also if you climb the stairs to the top there usually are less tourist there and you can get better photos

Busy, touristy, bustling with charm, smiles and atmosphere you simply couldn’t find elsewhere. Hold on to your bags and valuables. We were warned about pickpockets. I didn’t see any, but I can imagine with it being so busy, it’s a prime spot. Common sense should be used. Would I go again? Absolutely I would. My son needs another pair of £9 raybans, and while he’s buying them, I can admire the beautiful street art that I’ve never been able to find better anywhere

It was crowded but not as much as I watched in videos. I got to take good pictures. But the weather was so difficult for me. The sun was burning so much.

Very easy to arrive at this place. You can use the subway and walk around 5 minutes until there. Is always full of people doing a file to get his Instagram photos. The art of this place is really nice. You should visit if you are in Rio.

  • 4/5 Ruben P. 4 years ago on Google
This is an interesting place to visit where you can take some iconic pictures. An important recommendation is to get there early in the morning. Later on the place will be crowded and some best places for pictures are privatized for some local “photographers” so you can’t even use some sections of the stairs. Even though people make long lines waiting for their turn. I also recommend to start on the top of the stairs and then going down stairs. Be careful with your cellphone and belongings in the surroundings.

Incredibly beautiful place but it is so busy with people during the day, it's hard to get good photographs. I assume it would be quieter in the early morning. A definite must do whilst in Rio

A Rio highlight... Plus it's FREE. If you're trying to take the perfect shot at the stairs... Make sure you're there bright and early. It's popular, so it gets busy quickly.

Vibrant, atmospheric and colorful place. I liked especially the old small buildings in colonial style which surround the stairs. Generally, feeling of safety in the centre differs a lot from Ipanema or Leblon. I’d advise do not take values with you. Be also aware of huge crowds in the noon and mid-day

  • 4/5 Helen W. 4 years ago on Google
Steps amazing. Unfortunately there's too many tourists so you can't really see much. Best to start at the top and look back. The bottom of the steps are crowded with lazy young people who can't be bothered to look beyond the first flight.

  • 4/5 Lynne L. 4 years ago on Google
The stairs are beautiful, can't deny that! It is super crowded with folks just taking a photo, not looking around, and leaving. It helps to just move passed the initial crowd at the bottom of the steps, walk on up and enjoy some quieter space while actually admiring the pretty tilework :)

  • 4/5 Abraham P. 4 years ago on Google
A lot of tourists, must go as early as you can. The area seems to be secure and police is always there, just to be careful with your surroundings. Great pictures to take when not too many people is around.

#fotos #escadariaselaron #riodejaneiro #rio

To be honest is a nice place for a couple of photos but take in mind that the most iconic one will require you to do a long line (especially girls). The best for me were the local artist and the details of the tiles. The surroundings aren't so nice or secure but within the stairs you'll always will find police.

Escadaria Selarón, also known as the 'Selaron Steps', is a set of world-famous steps in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. They are the work of Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón who claimed it as "my tribute to the Brazilian people".

  • 4/5 Stephen S. 4 years ago on Google
I was not aware of these steps until we were dropped here briefly on a guided tour, but I'm glad we came. They're crowded, Instagram princesses and their harried boyfriends spend their entire time searching for the perfect spot and the crowds never stop. My advice? Just chill, enjoy the colour, and movement and take whatever pictures you can. And make sure you have a brief look around the area at the bottom of the steps, where there are colourful houses and murals, and a few places to grab a drink.

Jorge Selarón made Escadaria Selarón the fantastic staircase in Rio de Janeiro Brazil and what a sight to see. Nearby I saw this stone picture, something to think about. This would be a perfect if you will be in a right time and moment. The place is jam-packed with locals and tourists alike! If you want a better shots, go to the uppermost part or portion of the stairs. Few people opted to visit that area. You will have the privacy at-least.

A vibrant and funky place. A great place to start a tour of Santa Teresa. Full of tourists though.

Awesome, go with a tour guide to really learn the beautiful but tragic story of the stairs and their creator. A fun experience not to be missed!

Great place to admire hand made tiles - just don't stay at the bottom, the stairs go further up, no need to que at the bottom.

There are a lot of tiles and they composed stairs. Each tile is unique design. It’s worth to visit but be carful to come here. This area is not so safe place.

It's a lovely place to be. Many colorful stairs.. Be mindful of the homeless people around, although it is relatively safe.

One of the iconic places to visit when you are in Rio de Janeiro. There is a 15 - 20 wait in line to take a good photo in the middle of the stairs.

Quite the tourist attraction in Rio. Beautiful steps that are well maintained but very busy at any given part of the day.

Where do I start? Go early to avoid the crowd! It is located in Lapa and Santa Teresa, souvenirs are located at the end of the stairs with restaurants! Take your time to enjoy this beautiful art work by Jorge Selarón!

I went to this place on a Thursday and it was very busy but not overcrowded. The bottom part is very busy with tourists taking pictures... As you move up the stairs it gets less crowded. It is an amazing place, very colourful, and it is decorated with beautiful tiles from all over the world. The atmosphere was incredible.

Great place to get a good photo op. Lots of tourists as well as locals giving off a good vibe. Be prepared to stand on line if you want a picture at the bottom of the stairs.

Go with time to spend... worth walking down... and then back up the staircase. Take in the moment, and just enjoy the work of Chilean artist Jorge Selarón constructed 1990–2013. There are 215 stairs I believe. We used it as part of our sightseeing route... walked down them on the way into St Teresa.... and then back up on our way back to where we were staying....so we got to experience it twice in one day!!! There is a coffeshop /restaurant at the bottom of the staircase ... which is also surrounded by beautiful wall murals. Bring a fully charged camera.

Don't go there when Brazil is celebrating their 200 year independence as it's probably even more busy than usual. Nevertheless nice area and amazing colorful experience. Tim: go to the top of the stairs. Everyone is queueing to take pictures at the first steps, but they are almost the same on top without the queue.

Wonderful sightseeing spot! Very creative and colorful. For me one of the most important stops when in Rio de Janeiro 😊 Most of the countries have its own tile with creative design/s. Sometimes very crowded, but that’s no big surprise. Also a nice spot to buy some souvenirs from the vendors on the street or enjoying a cold drink in one of the numberless bars next to it. And maybe you see some small monkeys jumping around 🐒

A lovely piece of art work and history to explore. There are so many different tiles on this staircase and when we were there on a Wednesday night, there was a three piece band playing and stalls selling caipirinhas. Would recommend visiting to see the art and climb the stairs - go to the to fit the best view. 4* because it does get very busy and crowded so try and time your visit (morning or later in the evening).

The famous stairs! So this is free to go to. Don’t let the travel guides fool you. I will say this tho. WATCH YOUR BELONGINGS!!! There are a lot of homeless and other people watching you. Please pay attention to your surroundings. Now aside from that this is the place you need to take pictures just to say you did it. It’s pretty crowded with natives and tourists so take them quick. They also have people selling all kinds of stuff nearby. These are mine I hope you enjoy.

If you already booked a your for one day in Rio, do not worry, they will bring you there! This escaderia is over 200+ stairs and you can take lots of pictures with beautiful backgrounds. There is a common photo you'd like to take, but there is usually a long queue (at the beginning), my recommendation is to go up and you'll find better spots for pictures

Iconic place in the neighbourhood of Santa Tereza in Rio de Janeiro. Stairs is a masterpiece created by a Chilean artist Jorge Selarón and still being building or renovated. Very nice to go through the stairs, check the pieces, find your country, soccer team or any other piece that might be related to you or something that you are related to among many many pieces of history. Totally worth and it is for free.

Extremely busy because it's so popular. You would need to get there fabulously early to avoid the crowds. Free. Lots of souvenirs, drinks and snacks available. Lots of street art too.

This is one of the newer spots that tourists have learned to love. Beautiful and colorful! I bought here the most overpriced, watered-down Caipirinha I had in Brazil - but it was totally worth it, it's all part of the experience. It gets pretty crowded, so keep your stuff close!

The Escadaria Selarón is a mesmerizing testament to art, culture, and vibrant expression in the heart of Rio de Janeiro. My visit to this iconic staircase was a visual feast—each step adorned with vividly colored tiles, creating a stunning mosaic that tells a story of creativity and passion. The blend of cultural influences and the artist's dedication make it a must-see attraction. Exploring the Escadaria Selarón was a captivating experience, offering not only a unique artistic perspective but also a glimpse into the soul of Rio. A truly inspiring and photogenic spot that adds a burst of color and energy to any visit.

What a cool story. This is a fantastic way to spend a few hours in Rio. These are the Selarón steps done by Jorge Selarón. In 1990, Jorge started fixing and painting the dilapidated steps outside his home. Neighbors mocked his color choices of the Brazilian flag but he persisted. This is vibrant testament to artistic dedication, and now offers tourists a captivating experience in Rio. Jorge Selarón's transformative work on these 215 steps, adorned with tiles from 60+ countries, reflects his unwavering passion. The evolving masterpiece invites visitors to explore the Lapa and Santa Teresa neighborhoods of Rio. This relentless pursuit of art creates an unforgettable and ever-changing cultural landmark.

Awesome place in Lapa. Be sure to go early in the morning on a weekday if you want a good picture. Also make sure to walk down the street towards the aqueduct to see all the wall art.
