Rome has a lot to offer but if I were to rank the tourist attractions I would rate this one a much lower. It looks good from the outside and on the bridge that was probably the best part. The inside isn’t bad but I wasn’t too impressed. It’s basically just a good looking castle and that’s about it. If you have a lot of time on your hands go and visit, otherwise take a picture from the bridge and move on.

Went first in the mid 70s. Now it's much harder to climb. The views are incredible I'd love to see it at night. Few decorated rooms frescos and beautiful ceilings. €13 isn't bad. A good hour or more to visit. December 29, 2023

Great old castle, nice placement near the Tiber river. The view is gorgeous, especially at sunset since the Basilica of St. Peter can be seen in the background. Also, the pedestrian bridge over the river is a romantic place with people that play slow songs on the guitar. We did not enter because the castle was closed, but it was pretty crowded so I suppose you should get tickets in advance if you want to visit the inside.

I would recommend doing a private tour. My girlfriend and I spent 3 hours with our guide. She knew all the ins and outs of the castle. There is no parking. There was a contemporary art installation at the time and it was awful. There were statues in the courtyards, it took away from the architecture and the surrounding courtyards. The history was fascinating. The view from the bastions we're outstanding. We went in march and the weather was beautiful. Inside the castle it can get cold, dress accordingly.

This castle is absolutely stunning, it’s definitely a must see when visiting Rome. It’s very well kept and preserved, it has a very nice medieval atmosphere to it. It has a very nice museum with a lovely collection of religious artifacts, paintings, statues, weaponry, pottery and more. It’s a very nice place to take families and kids. It’s an historical and very educational site, I really enjoyed my time here and I would definitely recommend visiting this lovely castle.

It's amazing that this structure is nearly 1900 years old, and has had quite a history during that time - mausoleum, fortress, prison, and museum. It's easy to spend 1.5-2 hours wandering through the various rooms, exploring the artwork and seeing great views of Rome and the Vatican. Nice signs in English and Italian are in each room. It does have a bit of steps initially so comfortable shoes are recommended. Tickets: We didn't purchase tickets in advance and only had a small wait at 10a. When we left around 12 there was a much longer line to purchase them. Cafe: This table service only cafe has indoor and outdoor seating. Coffees were atrociously expensive (€5 for a medium caffe latte) but sandwiches and pastries were tasty and more reasonably priced. Nice toilets are then immediately after the entrance on the ground floor (the upper ones were closed at the time of writing).

This is a beautiful castle. I was amazed at all the exceptional paintings. The architecture is impressive as well. It's only a short walk from the Vatican. I know there are many things to see in Rome, but if you can make the time, I recommend you put this on your "To Do" list. You won't be disappointed.

A beautiful castle. The experience is straight forward, but you can easily spend at least 1.5 hours here excluding the garden. There is a floor with an exhibition room, then several paths deeper and upper into the castle, but still straight-forward enough to see everything. You will see fortress interior areas, castle walls, exhibits of old weaponry and paintings, and of course many grand rooms with beautiful art covering the ceiling and walls. Tickets 14€~

This place gets 5 stars for the spectacular view from the top. Best view of the city for sure. The museum itself has a logical itinerary with good signage so you get to all the important places. There is a nice cafe on level 4 with seating around the edge for great views but don't miss the top level. This is basically a walk around this historic building. There were not a lot of rooms or artifacts on display. Totally worth it though.

A wonderful castle to visit while in Rome with stunning views and architectural significance. The castle is well maintained and is a pinnacle point of the city. Beautiful views and gorgeous sunny days make it shine

This is the place to go if you really like old castles and prisons. There are a few frescos and pieces of art, but nothing incredibly noteworthy. It is within walking distance of St Peter's basilica and the Vatican. There are good displays and explanations along the way and no audio guide necessary. The views from the top are stunning and it would be even more so in the evening.

Pretty view plus it's a castle. Still overpriced for what it is though. Bathrooms are a horror so arrive dehydrated. I think I saw 5 staff members in total - 3 of which were at the entrance. I would not recommend it if you're on a <4 day trip. There are better views that cost less, but they aren't a castle I guess :p

The castle is very interesting to visit and explore. It’s incredibly enjoyable to see the various historical periods being present in the same building. Definitely worth the admission price. I highly recommend to buy tickets in advance via their website to avoid huge queues. I know it might be disrespectful to the beauty and importance of the monument itself, but to me the best part was the incredible view of Rome you get from the top of the castle. You can see so much of the city in a clear day, it’s majestic.

What can I say - I did not expect that this place is so interesting! Amazing historical landmark, must visit place when you are in Rome. The castle inside is incredible, how many old paintings in there! Very impressive. This place deserves 5 starts. I paid 19 €, if I’m not mistaken. However, be sure that you buy the ticket in advance. Honestly, you do not need a guide for this place - everything is clear and you will not be lost. Good luck! 🍀

Definitely 5 stars! We were not fortunate to go into Castle Sant'Angelo but we were fortunate to eat just outside it and marvel at its beauty. The Castel is a wonder in its own right and is in great condition for its age. It's a stone's throw away from the centre of Rome and if you have time I suggest paying the nominal EUR to explore inside.

A castle full of history, art and beauty. on a hot summer day, the inside trails of the castle had us cool down. we bought tickets online, so there was no waiting, no guide or audio guide. every room had something special to look at, but the most amazing thing about the castle is the view !! on the top of it, there are small old windows, with such magical view, the beauty of Rome !

Breathtaking views and such a well-preserved fortress. A lot of history went down here. Spend three hours—they go by so quickly. Absolutely a high spot of any visit to Rome!

This is a really interesting place and the views are amazing. Whoever wrote the info signs (in English) did a great job as they actually give you a sense of the place through the ages and didn’t just give dull dates and names that too many museums etc provide. The cafe, overlooking the Vatican, is surprisingly lovely for a drink.

The entrance to the castle is easily found. You can purchase tickets in advance or at the gate (there is no wait usually). Once entering, you can marvel at the sheer size and decoration throughout. The roof has a wonderful view of the city. Ticket prices are reasonable for the experience. I would recommend visiting for the spectacular views and history.

Quiet an impressive castle! Didn't go inside but the surroundings, especially at sunset, are lovely and give you that warm feeling. There was a street artist nearby playing and singing, which made the environment feel even more special. For sure one of the best time I had on my visit to Rome

Very nice and huge place. They also have a restaurant on the top of the castle. Very nice overlooking the Vatican, though we came here July 2, it's very hot. There's water fountain inside and it's cold and it helps you to cool off. You can drink that too.

A great place to visit. Explains a lot of historical moments. Awesome view from the top (Rome's panoramic view). Ticket isn't expensive and the queue weren't long. They give a map that explains a lot. There is a nice cafeteria on the top.

The castle is not to be missed on your visit to Rome. It looks magnificent from the outside and it's very interesting from the inside. The tour is straightforward, you walk in circles and make your way in and up. We visited in May on a Tuesday in the morning and there was no wait at all. I'd recommend seeing the decorated rooms and especially the terrace at the top. The view of the whole city and the river Tiber is magnificent.

Lovely castle with a fascinating and long history! Beautiful views of the city and many different areas to explore. Cute cafe/bar near the top with great views and a cooler place to sit. Gorgeous from afar and inside. Short queue to buy tickets but was so quick it didn’t feel long at all.

Amazing castle the visit takes approximately an hour and you walk quite a lot. The view form the top is amazing and there’s also a nice cafeteria in the middle. Especially liked the EU youth sale, so the tickets were only 2€ for each, definitely worth the money and the visit.

It was for me almost like a hidden treasure (hidden in plain sight). I loved every moment related to this place. Ever since my husband showed it to me in Assassin’s creed, I was curious about it. And it didn’t disappoint. We had the Roma pass and booked directly from the website, so the entrance was easy. The way up was magical and it totally transported us to ancient times. The top of the castle has a magnificent view of Rome and the Vatican. Tip: take binoculars

One of the best attractions Rome has to offer for a few reasons. While busy at peak times, it's accessibile and you can avoid the masses throughout the many rooms and bastions,it rarely sells out and the views are incredible, panoramic across the Tiber, the Vatican city and beyond. Like many Castles you can go for the history, spend time reading and discovering. Or simply go for the views and wonder. Like most of Rome it has good toilet facilities and sports a bar and cafe on level 2, with fantastic views overlooking the Vatican City its worth waiting or grabbing a seat where possible. Highly recommended and if possible take a stroll by at night its quite spectacular.

We turned up on the day and waited in a short queue to get in; if you've booked tickets you walk straight through. It was very good value for money with plenty to see across the castle. You also get a fantastic view across the city.

Go early or later in the day. We went mid day and it was really hot. Originally Emperor Hadrian’s mausoleum evolving into a fortress and papal residence over the years. Restrooms available after the entrance. Be careful of the overly friendly vendors outside the site, some will toss to you or aggressively try to tie a friendship bracelet in an attempt to get you to buy items.

Gorgeous views from up there!! 😍 absolutely worth visiting.. I turned up with no reservation and surprisingly the queue was not too long to be Sunday. I must have waited something like 10/15mins.. price is not too bad something like €14.. there's a bar on the way up where you can sit and enjoy the view and I remember a couple of benches as well.. up on top a big terrace with 2 more benches.. breathtaking view of the city..

Beautiful castle and the bridges that lead to it. Best photos of the castle can be made from the bridge Umberto I. Both during morning light and after sunset light are great for making photos. I didn’t go inside the castle, but the view outside is really incredible. And what’s the really cool thing: 10 min by feet and you are in Vatican city! 💛 If you are planning your trip, better add sightseeing of Vatican and the castle for one day together.

One of the top attractions in Rome. Must-visit place, unique and with stunning views from the terrace overlooking Rome and the Vatican city. Tickets costs around €15 per adult, and doesn't matter what time it is, there are always long queues so be prepared to spend some time in front of the castle ;) The good thing is that every day the artists playing on their instruments in front of the building creating unique atmosphere and unforgettable experience for the tourists. Don't forget to give them some nickels and dimes to support them!

Beautiful castle to visit at night as it is lit up. The bridge nearby is also very romantic. Bring your comfortable walking shoes as the road is made of cobblestone. Across the bridge you will begin to find streets full of shopping and places to dine at.

Nice place to walk around and eat some gelato, there also are some souvenirs. I didn’t experience entering in the castle because I didn’t find great reviews on it and didn’t have much time, however you can give it a try. The area nearby looks a bit dirty and you will find better places in the city, crossing the river you will find the trastevere sector which is really nice to eat good pasta

Really amazing castle on the bank of Tevere 😍 It’s beautiful both inside and out. A huge angel state greets us on the bridge before we enter to the castle. It is also worth walking inside because some windows offer a wonderful view 😍 You can also go out to the roof of the castle and worth it because you can see almost whole Roma… 🤩

It’s walking distance from the Vatican, quite centrally located, the whole structure stands out and can be seen from far, it actually looks quite cool but surprisingly empty. I went after my morning tour at the Vatican and bought tickets on the spot easily. There is a path to follow through the whole site with some options for quick exits. The whole place is quite well laid out and with quite a few things to see. The views from the top is pretty amazing as well. Definitely worth a trip.

This is one of the best sights in Rome in my opinion - I’ve been there two times and can imagine coming back. The castle is very open for walking around. There are also not as many tourists as in some other places and you can buy a ticket at the entrance. The price is okay for what you get in my opinion. The views are amazing

Such magnificent castles. Since you approach it from the other side of the Tiber, it stands the horizon. Once you're inside, you can admire its ancient architecture while you learn about its large history. Once you reach the highest level, you have one of the best panoramic views of Roma. We went at dawn and could see the sun set behind the St. Peter's Basilica. It also has a coffee at the mid level where you can enjoy drinks to hang out or get some rest.

There are some super cool views over the Vatican city and a cool vibe. Made me think that the ruler at that time used to have an eye on all the city just from above. I was astonished by how secure was the place. Traps, hidden windows, etc. I believe the enemy didn't stand a chance getting inside. It's better to book a ticket online before to skip the line.

It’s a castle with a long history, and the view of the castle from the bridge is beautiful, particularly in the evening. We didn’t get into the castle since it’s closed in the evening / in early morning, but we enjoyed walking around it & the beautiful bridge in front of the castle. If you only have a tight schedule in Rome, then this place can be optional in my opinion.

Such an amazing day for exploring the history of Castel Sant’Angelo! Not crowded during the week so if you have a weekday you can do I would highly suggest that! We didn’t have tickets in advance but it only took 5 minutes to get them from the ticket office there. I would definitely go if you have the time!

This is always a good visit.... if you have time to get there early.... otherwise the sites from the castle are quite nice. Avoid eye contact with the guys on the bridge trying to put a bracelet or item in your hand. The latest craze is “checking your language” is them asking. What time is it? Or. I like your shoes. Or something else. Try your best not to engage them in any fashion and keep walking. Also.... don’t let them put anything in your hands. Other then that enjoy the bridge and the views of the river and historic surroundings. Watching spring appear from this vantage point is very cool too.

Fantastic view of the city and cultural residence of the Pope part of the year. History, art and religious studies collide here and it's well worth visiting especially if you're spending much of your time in the Vatican city. This would be a very fitting addition to anyone trip who wants to learn about the papal history or Catholicism. It would take approximately 3 hours at a medium pace to add this to your itinerary. Go when the weather is nice for optimal view on top.

Beautiful views across Rome and Vatican City, a LOT of stairs, wear comfortable shoes and bring water! There was an amazing jewellery and fashion exhibition when we visited, I personally found this more interesting than the permanent displays. There’s a cafe at the top and if you’re lucky you’ll get a table with the most beautiful views.

We past next to it while we were going to the Vatican. It's beautiful on the outside. The statue at the top is magnificent. We didn't go inside but the pictures I saw from others I would say its not worth it. There is a nice garden around to sit and rest, eat Gelato and enjoy Rome

Another of Rome's great historical place. We were going to self guide but changed our minds and hired a local guide to take us around. Very glad we did. She took us to several historical sites including this one. We came away with a great understanding of the history here. Suggest that you do the same.

Obviously, gorgeous outside and so big. So instead of creating a queue to enter under trees or a structure that covers the people from a temperature of 98 degress...i start by saying that there is no cover from the sun, there aren't benches or bins...so you'll probably burn your skin if you don't have solar cream. The staff that manages the queue could arrive and tell you that the maximum number of people that can enter is 80 cause they are so badly organized... If you want to enter make the ticket online. For every monuments you want to visit during the summer...

Évidemment c'est magnifique, évidemment à visiter. Par contre l'attente en plein soleil est très longue pour le peu de personne présente... Il y a largement de quoi faire patienter les visiteurs à l'ombre, très mauvaise organisation.

So much to see! It took us half a day! Great exhibition, historic site in such a great condition, nice visit! Have a coffee with an amazing view at the fort!

This place is simply amazing. It's a time machine, you start from the bottom and climb the castle upwards, and with that you travel through time starting from the ancient roman foundation up to the papal layers above. The design of the building is so unique that it feels like visiting a small town suspended in the sky. Absolutely a must seen in Rome! PS: the view from the top is stunning!

One of my favorite monuments to visit in Rome, probably now with all the Covid restrictions is better to make a reservation, but anyways if you are patient you can get inside without. The guy in the ticket office was super kind, and the view from the castle makes it all worth it. I recommend it!

Was expecting a lot more. The history involved is great, but the building and the rooms do not have much to see. The view from the top is very cool.

The only real ‘castle’ in Rome! Thick walls and a beautiful view over the city at sunset!

Very cool. Worth standing in line. Easier to book tickets if you already know you want to go ;)

It is worth the ticket price for sure. Has a amazing city view and some historical curiosities. In addition, has a coffe shop with awesome view to the Roman forum.

I visited the Castel Sant’Angelo in Rome. It is a must-visit tourist attraction. Unfortunately, we couldn’t enjoy the castle for a long time as we arrived a bit late, but the view was amazing from the castle. Devote at least an hour of your time here.

Good old days and photos from 2018. A year when every human being could travel freely...

Place worth visiting, get your tickets in advance though. I particularly liked the view from the top.

Amazing, really well-preserved castle. It hosts many temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The view from the top of the castle is spectacular, you can see S. Peter's Basilica and other monuments very clearly. There is also a small café at the top. It is certainly worth visiting. And it gets even better if you read its history even before visiting. The only negative point is that it closes pretty early (19.30) even in summer, even though it would be nice to watch the sunset from up there.

Very cool history building with a well designed path to explore it all. Has a surprisingly reasonably priced and nice cafe inside. The view from the roof is one of the best in Rome, almost recommended just for that.

Magnificent! I have been in this place virtually in games, so it was a goal to visit. In reality, it looks even better! The castle is really big and very well preserved. The view at the top is spectacular as well. Make sure you stop at the cafe to get your coffee or aperitif and enjoy the view!

This was an interesting place to visit. But I would put it in the second tier of tourist attractions in Rome. If you have multiple days in Rome, you should definitely check it out. You should definitely buy tickets in advance so that you can skip the line. It was wheelchair-accessible with elevators, although the wheelchairs cannot go everywhere.

This is a great place to visit. It is around 14 euro to get get in and you can tour the castle at your own pace. It is not overly crowed, there are some interesting facts along the way and some fantastic views of Rome and the Vatican. Well worth the visit. It would have been nice to have the option of an audio tour.

Honestly, this should get more kudos as a top attraction in Rome. Even if you are not into castles it has some of the best views of the city! For €13 it is great great value. So much to see and a very interesting castle and history dating back to before Christ. DO NOT MISS!

The castle has so many layers of history and detail - mausoleum, papal residence, prison, garrison, museum. Great views of the Vatican and Rome. Really worthwhile a visit. Suggest you get a skip the line ticket, to save time queuing!

Beautiful place to visit in Rome. Not expensive 13€. We were lucky wasn't long que to get in. Stunning historical place with amazing views from the top of the building. On one of the levels available coffee and refreshments. If you like history and architecture it's a place to visit

  • 4/5 Aaron R. 8 months ago on Google
This building looks old when you approach it, and it remains impressively authentic on the inside where possible, though there does appear to have been a lot of it required repair over time. The building itself is impressive, though at times the rooms seem a little empty and there's perhaps less to see than you might expect. Other rooms are packed with paintings, diary pages and interesting stories. Overall if you like history, architecture, or simply being in awe at some of history's most amazing buildings, this is well worth the visit.

We bought tickets from the official website and it was super fast entering the castle. Talking about castle I've visited definitely more beautiful ones in other parts of Europe, but this one is worth visiting as well. Full of history and has great panoramic view on the top.

The castle St. Angelo is nice and picturesquely located on the tiber river shore. You can take marvelous photos during the day like by night from the surrounding bridges or other river bank. Inside you have some historical expositions, very nice ceilings, and the views. The views are 360° and you have a very beautiful Rome perspective. Usually it is rather popular and crowded, so I would advice to take the tickets online. Definitely worth visiting

Very nice even wirhout a guide. The view is fantastic, the opening time is till 7:30 pm. So if you enter with the fast line ticket you have no waiting time, enough time for a dring upstairs in the bar with a great view and finally time to watch the sun going down. All in all a nice exercise.

Great place to visit. You can buy tickets at the door. Very well kept, good bathrooms, interesting exhibitions. Don't need audio guide there's signs with explanations in English everywhere. Worth the visit. Took us 45 minutes to explore the whole thing but could've spent more time there. Lots to see.

The castle is big and it’s especially beautiful in the evening when the lights lighten it. Inside wasn’t very interesting. If you decide to enter it, better buy your ticket in advance in order not to wait on the line.

Watch the sun set from the top if you can. Good building to explore, with historical interest. Has its own cafe and views across Rome. Not for people with mobility issues. Buy tickets ahead in busy seasons

  • 5/5 Jack W. 4 months ago on Google
Favorite thing I did in Rome! Buy your tickets in advance to get around the huge line in front. Definitely worth taking a few hours to climb this amazing structure!
