We went to the restaurant for a 2 course meal. It was absolutely lovely. The kitchen is close and you can see the food coming out. Never waits. Always comes out hot and fresh. I had white bait starter (amazing) lamp chops (even better) my wife had something else (she enjoyed it) The restaurant is a little on the expensive side. Definitely a rare visit but would love to go back. The staff need a little training i found. LOTS of 'posh' people expecting wine served correctly etc. I thought it was good except our waiter lady did dissappear for 15 minutes at a time. Bit annoyed but not a problem. Expensive but worth it 👌

The most wonderful afternoon tea. Sopwell House is lovely, great location too. From the moment we arrived the staff were most courteous and helpful. Possibly the best afternoon tea I've had, in a most delightful room. To top it all a small cake with happy birthday was also provided. Thank you to everyone. Robert.

Me and my wife had the most wonderful time, thank you to the great staff who were friendly, very welcoming and helpful. The whole building, staff, facilities, Spa, dining was outstanding. Our room was super clean, had everything we needed like iron, ironing board, hair dryers, shampoo, conditioner including Sky TV. The bed was super comfortable. The restaurant Omboo had amazing dishes, the food was excellent. Everything was perfect for us and I honestly can’t wait to visit again and explore other areas like the afternoon Tea. Definitely an amazing gateway for couples

We booked to stay overnight at the hotel and we’re told after booking we could not receive any treatments. You would think the spa would reserve slots for hotel guests but no. After I called multiple times to inquire the spa reception sent me in circles often hanging up. The only good part about this process was the hotel reception who was nice and helpful. I’m trying to cancel the booking now but the reception keeps saying they will call me back? Why is it so hard for them to cancel a booking?

Came here with my wife for our honeymoon and it was definitely a memorable experience. Very relaxing and plenty of things to do. Perfect way to unwind and get away from everyday life. Massage treatments were amazing and food was delicious. Staff are really friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommended going here.

We had an enjoyable overnight stay. We did a package with a treatment and meals. Lunch was lovely and service was excellent unfortunately our evening meal was marred because of the long wait between courses. Overall the food was delicious and there was plenty of choice for breakfast. I found the pool area to be relaxing and it was nice to be able to soak up some sun outside. We both had a massage which was very, very relaxing. I would recommend heading there for a relaxing time away.

A 15 min drive from my home in Radlett, so an easy & comfortable stay-cation. Gorgeous surroundings. Convenient neighborhood. No lift to the rooms. Moderately priced. Breakfast buffet was good. Robes & slippers. apples 🍏 at the check in. Bar open late. Room service closes at 11pm, use by QR code. Lots of parking :) Spa , golf, cute rooms. Great staff!

We arrived for a one night stay for our anniversary. Check in is 3pm but our room wasn’t ready until almost 4pm. Although we were given complimentary drinks to compensate us, we lost out on time at the spa. The spa facilities were wonderful. Food at the brasserie was amazing and service there and at the cocktail lounge was excellent. All the staff are excellent. But it’s worth checking whether there’s a wedding going on before you book because the music noise was horrific in our room until midnight - not what I expected from a relaxing spa hotel at nearly £300 a night. Despite the very good elements, I would not come back.

My Girlfriend and I went to the Brasserie for our Anniversary and the food was amazing. Service was very impressive with minimal wait times and extremely kind wait staff. After our meal we went into the cocktail bar and the bartender made us the best cocktails we’ve ever had! This place is much much more than a nice hotel, well worth the visit.

Lovely hotel, we stayed in the Mews which also provides access to the Club spa area. Room was fantastic, well finished, maintained and cleaned. Very pleasant and welcoming. Staff throughout were excellent, very friendly, extremely helpful, polite, professional and approachable. Excellent hotel and will be returning again. Only negative I can think of is access to the Hotel was down a quite narrow country road which was fairly busy with branches on both sides and a number of potholes. No real problem and certainly nothing the hotel can change but it is something to note. Perhaps there is a better way in which we didn't use.

Such a fantastic hotel. Beautifully decorated and the staff are so polite and always there to help. The location is very tranquil and there are a few nice walks along the River Ver and around the Hotel Grounds too. The Cottonmill spa has plenty of loungers and also some comfortable upright seating. A large wide pool and 2 hot tubs definitely help with capacity and the sauna and steam room are large too. It doesn’t get too loud, this is down to the design of the roof and walls helping with that. The bars and restaurants are fantastic with a great variety of cuisine and atmosphere too. Even though the hotel was full, we couldn’t tell as the two separate spas and plenty of space in the hotel helps divide some of the guests up. We didn’t eat dinner on-site but breakfast was delicious and made to order omelette was my favourite. I will be planning my next stay soon and will be booking one of the restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will try The Club next time.

Probably the best spa I've been to. It's beautiful, modern and clean. There's lots of space in the spa area and enough loungers. The outdoor heated pool is amazing. It's very peaceful and is set around some beautiful scenic countryside. The hotel is also beautifully done, the rooms are really lovely and comfortable. The only thing that let's it down for me personally is the food in the restaurant (brasserie). Its very average. We didn't feel that the food really matched the rest of the venue and the kitchen needs to up their game. The restaurant also needs a bit of a refurbishment. Compared to the rest of the hotel the restaurant is tired and dark. I would definitely return but would book dinner elsewhere.

Had a lovely mid week stay for 2 days. The club spa was a highlight with exceptional service form Sean on the front desk making my friends birthday more special and Grace from the spa being very helpful. The only critiques would be the quality & service of the brassiere do not match the spa experience. Potentially would of been nice to have some of the spas a hotter temperature. Also in general I feel like they have some tech problems as when I booked over the phone they had some booking issues with their system (I also ordered a birthday cake upon arrival in room which was not even noted down when I asked later that day). Ordered drinks through the QR code & they were labelled incorrectly. Was left waiting for a bit in the cafe/brassiere when tying to order etc while staff continued conversations etc. Overall a lovely experience but just a few little things I would except for a luxury experience & for the price they charge.

The staff at Sopwell, in particular the manager of afternoon tea on Saturday, could benefit from equality/unconscious bias/discrimination training. My group of 6 friends were made to feel unwelcome and faced a few challenges during what should've been a great experience. Firstly there wasn't enough vegetarian sandwiches for us - despite telling them of our dietary requirements weeks earlier when booking. Then we were told we needed to eat quickly and leave (this is at 4.30) and hour before closing. We were then told we couldn't have more than 3 takeaway boxes because they'd run out. When leaving (after basically being forced out) there were still many guests still seated who seemed relaxed and unrushed, and we saw many more takeaway boxes. By some miracle we were kindly offered, some more boxes the next morning, by an Asian male staff member who was the first to actually offer us good customer service. The hotel itself is lovely, everything is clean and rooms are fab. The spa was really relaxing - great pool and facilities. The breakfast was quite basic but the quality of food is above average. We will more than likely return because we won't let the actions of a few individuals affect us!

We had an amazing time at Sopwell House! What a beautiful location for a family wedding we attended. The gardens and venue are magical and just a wonderful place to visit or stay! Highly recommend it to everyone... Fun was had by all the family, thanks to both wedding parties. Thank you to the Dhokia family for making it a memorable wedding celebration for us all!! xxx

I loved it! I cannot recommend it enough! The rooms are big and spotless. It doesn’t have that smell that is usually in a hotel, everything smells clean. The bed is huge and very comfortable. There is Sky tv available. The Spa is gorgeous. The indoor pool is really big. There are 2 jacuzzi’s, a sauna and a steam room. Breakfast is also great choice and good quality ingredients. I will definitely go back. The staff at The Brasserie is lovely, they are super helpful. Same for the Spa. They are polite. I had a massage booked with Carolina, she was amazing! Really listened to my needs. I will definitely go back!

We went for the basic Afternoon Tea package (no champagne). The food, tea and service was very good. However we really disliked the room they use for the Afternoon Tea. We were amazed that a hotel which is in a lovely setting stuck us in a room with NO natural light. All the windows were covered with curtains which really spoiled the atmosphere. We would not recommend Sopwell House as a destination for afternoon tea. Which is a shame since the hotel looked really appealing.

This was our second visit to Sopwell House both times were celebrating our anniversary. The gardens are beautiful. Dennis who is the manager of the brasserie was amazing. The steak was one of the best we had eaten. When we checked out we were served by Harris who was very helpful and polite. The only complaint I have, is that when we had the afternoon tea, which was lovely, we were not informed at the start that we could have more sandwiches if we wanted them. Also we were asked if we would like water a few times, so we ended up having it, we were under the impression it was tap water but was charged £5 on the bill. I think this should be made clearer to the Customer when being served. We hope to return again next year.

Never received any email confirmation of my spa day 2. Wanted to have vegan afternoon tea but they said i should have requested this beforehand, however, this was not highlighted during the booking (via telephone) so i had to make do with what they had. 3. Explained during the booking and during the afternoon tea we are celebrating my wife's birthday. I was advised they will do something special for her. It was noted thats all. However, there was another person's birthday and they were given a small dessert with a candle wishing them happy birthday. 4. Advised £10 to using the weighing machine in the gym and then advised £20 by the spa reception

Take a cushion, the loungers in the spa are very hard, our bottoms have eventually recovered. The restaurant and bar staff were very friendly, helpful and attentive - we had a lovely afternoon tea during our company's spa day. Best of luck asking for a VAT receipt/invoice, it's like asking for the moon.

I experienced a well organised and sophisticated full Spa day with 4 other friends. Some of us had treatments, purchased beauty products, attended a Sunday Yoga class, used the gym, and there was a birthday celebration. Others lounged poolside and at the steam room and spa area. We also had a Vegan in the group who was catered for, which really made a positive difference. Food was immaculately presented (pictured is a Starter selected from a Buffet - this was a self select plate of Vegan items). A pleasant and memorable experience where we all were able to unwind, converse, and devote some much needed time to rest and relaxation. 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Each star earned for top-notch service and facilities! 😌

Our first visit at Sopwell House. Overall we had a nice experience, attentive staff, 2 good options of restaurants for lunch and dinner. The spa facilities were satisfactory but I do believe if you are coming here it is worth paying the extra for the club to elevate your stay. I had a tour the next morning and it would be worth the money to upgrade. Location was perfect for us as it was a short journey of 30mins. Properly wouldn't stay next time just dine and spa for the day. Overall I would recommend this hotel.

I was gifted a maternity massage at the cotton mill spa. I have always enjoyed having a massage, but being pregnant with my first baby I was a little worried about having any treatment. I was really impressed by the treatment I received and wonderful staff that made my trip extra special. Tia especially was very friendly and informative. Thank you :) I would highly recommend

Had a lovely afternoon here, great service and the food was great. Scones were amazing! Soft and fluffy in the inside and soft biscuit texture outer layer. We had the classic afternoon tea, 3 tiers, top tier is the lovely dessert cakes, middle tier are the scones and bottom tier finger sandwiches (nice but the cucumber one was a tad dry). Room was recently redecorated and looked great, chairs was comfy.

Been here 3 times now as I love the spa and breakfast, in particular. The grounds are good and nothing is too much bother for the staff. Would only say that the Junior Suites should come with a refrigerator as standard as we pay a good price. Other than that - great stay always.

From start to finish we were welcomed with open arms and the staff really are the true asset of Sopwell house. All so helpful, friendly, welcoming and they went above and beyond for me and my friends. As it was my friends birthday they wrote her a cute card and put it in the room. The manager of the breakfast section was also super sweet and again went above and beyond making the experience pleasurable. Not only that, the spa is stunning. Thanks so much for your hospitality, we will be back very soon :)

We have been to Sopwell House on several occasions for the overnight spa packages. Every time we have had an amazing experience. Prior to covid the standard spa was great and now the Cottonmill spa is out of this world. The hotel rooms have always been very clean and comfy. Some rooms more renovated than others, but we spend most of the time out of the room. The food and service from the staff have always been excellent. Team are always very professional but friendly. We look forward to our next visit

We came to celebrate our Wedding at Sopwell House. We started with afternoon tea which was incredible, the food was delicious and the staff were extremely friendly & attentive . The hotel room was beautiful and spotless.. However, the day was tarnished by an absolutely terrible evening meal in the Brasserie. To start with they didn’t have the Rose Champagne or two of the Red wines that we wanted. The starter, Salted Profiteroles was dry & bland (almost tasted stale). The 28 DAYS AGED ANGUS RIB EYE (£38) was one of the worst pieces of meat that I have ever eaten, all three of us left most of the Steak as it was full of gristle. I am surprised that our waitress didn’t comment on the amount of fat left when clearing the plates. Dessert, again, very disappointing. Our guest actually left his dessert uneaten. I would rate the Brasserie a two star restaurant, it felt like we were eating microwaved pub food rather than dining in a luxury hotel. The meal was embarrassing. We chose not to make a fuss at the table as we were trying not to put a dampener on our special day, I do find it particularly odd that the waitress didn’t comment on the amount of food left, nor ask us once if everything was ok. In the morning we discussed our experience with the hotel manager who gave us 20% off the meal (basically the price of one Steak). She promised to call us in the evening after speaking to the Brasserie Manager.. Two days later we still haven’t heard from her. This experience unfortunately ruined our stay.

Me and my partner spent 2 nights here and had an the most enjoyable weekend. We had two treatments (facial and a massage) and booked dinner in the Brasserie for both nights. Lunch/Afternoon tea was beautiful and the service was excellent. Overall the food was delicious we made the most of the room service, breakfast in bed. The outside pool area was our favourite part of the spa and we made the most of using the saunas/steam rooms and relaxation zones. We would highly recommend here to anyone looking for a quiet getaway. Perfect for relaxing and spending quality time with your partner. 10/10 ☺️

Beautiful location, and a huge spa. My friend and I went for a spa day and it was incredibly relaxing. The facilities are great with robes and towels provided. There are a few sauna and steam rooms, so it felt very private and relaxing. The staff were incredibly friendly and professional and the massage was amazing! Would highly recommend the cotton mill spa!

This review is in regards to spa only. The place is rather run down. I would accept this if it wasn't so untidy for the price charged. Dirty windows, walls and basically everything in the main pool area - streaks and limescale everywhere, not to mention other filthy things. Many towels and robes look like they've already lived their best and their retirement is long overdue. Felt like the owners are just living off the profits instead of reinvesting into the facilities. And what has ever happened to the showers? The pressure is lower than a drizzle, there's no difference whether you choose cool or hot - it's burning hot anyway. Kudos to the staff who are still keeping this place positive and running. But I wouldn't be surprised if they come and go fast. Charles in the brasserie is amazing! So are the reception ladies. Conservatory bar seems to be overly pressed - perhaps one or two extra people would help keeping it clean and organised, without long waiting times. Not the experience it claims it provides at all!

An afternoon tea with my sisters...beautuful hotel. Staff very helpful and attentive. Lots of quiet area's to sit and chat. The afternoon tea was delicious. Good choice of sandwiches and fillings and additional sandwiches offered. The scones were warm and and a beautiful selection of cakes. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The public area's and ground's were immaculate. Will return soon.

I went for Christmas lunch with colleagues. Food was ok. Service was great It was very strange to sit in the restaurant and see people in dressing gowns and slippers walking through. Bad bad traffic planning. I would never go there for lunch. But definitely would stay in the hotel. Not sure about spa and walking through restaurant to reach it. Although clients coming from spa looked very relaxed. Must be good one.

I visited the Cottonmill spa at Sopwell House 2 weeks ago and mainly made use of The Club facilities. The facilities were lovely, stylish, clean and pleasant to use with some very modern facilities like the deep relaxation pods. I had a massage from a lady (Carolina or Catalina??) and she was extremely attentive, kind, and exemplified great customer service. The service was extremely good throughout the day and the food was lovely. I cannot fault it. I don't personally think the spa package I purchased is the best value for money as other spas have more facilities, and The Club Classic package I purchased included lunch but not the drinks with lunch. That said, it is a high quality experience, I would recommend it and I would visit again, so that says a lot.

  • 3/5 Danielle S. 1 year ago on Google
I stayed here for my birthday and unfortunately felt underwhelmed and was not worth the price I paid. The spa was so busy and so it was no longer relaxing. The room was small and dated for the price I paid. There were also no directions from the car park to reception which is far from helpful. The only saving graces were the food, massage and one of the waiters at dinner time who was so lovely. Maybe a stay here would be better at quieter times of the year but I don’t think I’d return…

Such an amazing venue. Attended an Indian wedding. Banqueting hall was spacious, dining hall also good size. Staff all so welcoming and friendly. The priest and music were absolutely spot on. Great food, great sounds.

Had a lovely Saturday Night stay with my partner. Facilities were great as were the treatments she had. Food lovely in a nice attentive restaurant, calm and relaxing. Good location for trip into St Albans or a walk along the various woodland footpaths nearby. Would love to come back. Forgot to say breakfast was amazing.

I met with a work colleague for lunch. I haven't been here in years and was pleased overall, with our food. The waitress was overly keen to take our order and I'd suggest she learns to read the diners' situation and body language! We wanted to take our time catching up and considering our choices. It wasn't crowded so rushing didn't seem necessary. However, once we got settled it was very relaxing and we were fortunate to be there on a sunny day. An interesting building with lots of rooms to drink, talk and dine in, in a leisurely way. Food was good and well presented. I shall return.

Fantastic place. The staff are amazing and really went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. We especially wanted to thank Anaya who went out of her way to accommodate us at the restaurant when they were fully booked. The spa is amazing and it's a perfect place to relax and put your feet up. I would definitely go back.
