I really don’t have many good things to say about this place. If there aren’t many people, I think this place is worth a visit. It’s super crowded with many group visitors. Food is average. There aren’t any special food here that you can’t get from night markets in Taipei. The facilities are behind. There were lots of big buses driving fast in narrow and steep roads with pedestrian walking on the shoulders. I gave 2 stars because I understand many people need to depend on the tourism to support their families. But as a tourist, I had bad experience.

A small town located on the sides of the hill with an old street that is full of local delicacies. Recommended to stay there over the night at the B and B there as the night view is very vastly different from the day view and is worth a visit. Also would advise to check the weather before you visit so that you can prepare your attire appropriately.

A fantastic place to visit. Huge tourist trap, but you already know that. Lots of tea shops, souvenir & food shops, but it also has fantastic hikes nearby as well as gold museums. Midweek, late morning is the best time to visit, after that it gets pretty crowded. Foot traffic mainly goes 1 way, but we got lost trying to exit back to the bus so we had to backtrack through the market. Lots of photo opportunities to view the Port area & ocean, plus heaps of places to stay overnight. Would recommend staying overnight if you are doing any of the hikes. Overall, a great place to visit & a relaxing day.

Exploring this spot in Taiwan feels like stepping into a historical site, where the echoes of 19th-century mining during Japan's reign linger. Now, it's a lively old street with charming eateries and souvenir shops. Ah Mei tea house steals the spotlight for its charm, making it a must-capture moment for tourists. Cash is king here, as credit cards aren't widely accepted. A December visit brings occasional rain, so pack a poncho or umbrella for a cozy, rain-kissed experience!

This town which was an isolated small village until the discovery of gold in 1893 was originally built by the Japanese and quickly developed the town due to a gold rush. Many buildings in the town are preserved to this day and now a maze of alleyways and lanes with rich culture and history. Nowadays, Jiufen is a popular destination that remembers and celebrates Taiwanese history and culture. A day tour may not be enough to explore and enjoy the place. Early reservation may be necessary if you want to stay overnight since the guesthouses and hotels can easily fill-up specially on weekends.

One of the most visited old streets in Taiwan. Can take a long walk all around for hours enjoying the traditional delicacies and treating our eyes with the arts and crafts. It is a very different feeling when you visit it during the day and night and I would prefer the later to see the lights along the landscape.Simply beautiful! I reckon the most profitable business there is renting the parking space. That's something that I felt was super expensive especially with the car. Counting as one of the most famous spots in the country, it is quite reasonable though. If you are somewhere in the north of Taiwan, make sure you visit Jiufen at least once and if possible stay till it gets dark to see the splendid beauty of Jiufen.

It is a small hill town with gold mine history painted on it. It is one of the popular stops for a weekend to hang out with your friends and enjoy shopping, the cafeteria, street foods, clothes, footwear, and lots more. Spirited away movie is inspired by this town. It is well connected to public transportation from Taipei and Songshan. It has a public and private parking area.

Nice old street with tons of street foods, and teas. Crowded even during weekdays. Commercialize but still fun to walk around and eat. There is a good story how this place got popular where it was once abandon by the people lived there. All start from an ad and a movie/drama. Please come during weekdays! Weekend is pack full.

The streets are full of romantic lanterns along with the pleasant cool weather. The night scene overlooking the whole town is shimmering and fanciful. Worthy of a place put in the cinema. It is impossible not to visit Jiufen if you have set foot in Taiwan.

This place is definitely worth a visit even if you have visited many times previously. What I love about Jiufen is it’s infrastructure and surrounding environment that is rich with culture and excitement. Every type of food or store gives you a different experience. We reached there before 12 and the timing was prefect as the crowd hasn’t arrive and we were able to get good food and have a place to sit and eat. Photo spots were available too which was great. We aim to make this place our bimonthly weekend getaway for good food and breathtaking views.

A place worth seeing and visiting. The whole vibe did remind me of the movie “Spirited Away”. It’s definitely a tourist spot here too. There’s plenty of food here. Great for sight seeing and also photo’s. You can enjoy a beautiful sunset here as well. I would avoid coming during the weekend’s because it gets very very crowded and the streets are narrow so it can get pretty cramped at times. All in all, it’s a good place to visit if you haven’t been.

Mini beautiful town that close to Taipei city, either getting there by a public bus straight to the town or public train then take a short bus to there. The atmosphere is amazing, you can see the sea and islands. Located on the mountain the town is small but pretty, I would recommend to stay over a night to experience the quite night but full of lights. Make sure you need to grab dinner at the local restaurants before 7.30 pm after that 90% of restaurants are closed. There is also 7/11 in case you missed.

A must visit attraction in Taiwan. The view from up here is simply breathtaking. Whether you come here in the afternoon or evening, both have its own amazing view. At around 6pm the street lamps will be on and the atmosphere is really romantic and worth taking pictures. There are many delicious restaurants here, my favorite is always the iced taro right in front of the post office. There’s also a 7-11 right at the entrance, and two public restrooms; one at the entrance and one in the middle. They have several homestays and hotels if you are interested to stay for the night, but the parking areas are quite expensive (in my opinion) and really crowded during peak season.

Great place to visit. In fact, it is a must visit whenever one is in Taipei. Lots of stairs as it us on a slope. Hence, exploring this place will help to provide one with a good amount of exercise. Food options are plenty. Shops selling local food stuff and tea are generous in providing samples with no obligations to buy. The taro balls dessert shops are plenty and really good.

I've been here probably 7 times, such a nice place to visit. Sometimes very hot, and lot and lots of people, but still a good place to go. So beautiful and great vibes. Also the views are amazing (stuff Is expensive tho)

In front of the famous tea shop, the grass is overgrown, making it difficult to take pictures like before. I guess it can't be helped that the prices are touristy, but I have the impression that the food prices are a little higher than those in Taipei City. Still, the change of scenery from evening to night is very beautiful, so it is worth seeing if you are a building fanatic.

Definitely a must-go place. The place looked very interesting from the usual night markets in Taiwan. They have a lot of food choices and stores. I suggest that you come here at a late afternoon/early evening to get the best view and to try the different stores.

Vincent was a remarkable driver and tour guide. He knows a lot about Taiwanese history, politics, culture and speaks fluent English, Chinese, Thai, and several other languages. He is also an impressive photographer. Just let him know you want a picture and he will tell you how to pose. All you have to do is just follow his instructions and you will get beautiful pictures to remember your trip by. I asked him about a few local dishes I wanted to try and he went out of his way to find them for me. He can also recommend places to shop for whatever special Taiwanese items you might be looking for. In my case, I asked him about where I could get CDs of Taiwanese singers. He immediately sent me the locations where I could get the items I wanted just within a walking distance from my hotel. If you want a private driver for your trip in Taiwan, definitely request Vincent and you won't be disappointed!

This wasn't my first choice to visit but we ended up here as the day was too rainy and windy to go to the beach areas. This is a very large old street set on a beautiful mountainside. There are a large number of shops and restaurants to explore and you can easily spend half a day here. My guide and I ate at a traditional restaurant with excellent food. No idea what the name was but we had braised pork with rice, vegetables, soup, fried tofu, and fried shrimp roll. Also picked up some jelly candies (they're only good for 3 days according to the shop), some dried peach, and a couple of small souvenirs. All-in-all I enjoyed the visit and would recommend to anyone that wants to take time to visit this area.

This is one of my favorite old street to visit in Taiwan, but also one of the busiest. I haven’t been back here since 2016 and the biggest change I recognized is that it is now packed with Korean tourists - signs in the stores are all bilingual with Korean translations! After all these years, I am still super excited about all the night market style local food and souvenirs they offer!

Was there on a very hot day. Still there are a lot of visitors. Would suggest bringing an umbrella and lots of sunscreen. The place was as I remembered before Covid19. However, this time round, I choose not to buy the lanterns. It’s really polluting the environment and what’s left of the lanterns are found in the river or on trees. I should have tried the train ride here but it’s a bit long. For those who have more time to spare, you can try the train.

A place like from a fairy tale, especially "Spirited Away" 🙂 Very easy access from Taipei. Plenty of food, souvenirs and beautiful views of the bay. It is a must to stay until dark when the lanterns light up. The famous tea house besieged by photographers. Try to arrive during the weekdays to avoid crowds.

Went here on a tour, but I wish I just came on my own to see town in night light. It’s very pretty (full of tourists, of course) and enjoyable. I got to try some street food and drinks, and although there were lots of people, it was enjoyable. Unfortunately I didn’t have the time to try the famous tea house, but it was worth the visit nonetheless

Many shops from selling tea, bubble tea, ice-cream, dry fruits and many more here. Many people by bus loads when we were there. You can walk thru the old street and buy lots of goodies while walking. The location is on top of mountain so there's uphill and downhill while walking through the shops. We also stop by tea place for tea break. Good place to take photos too.

My biggest tips are… 1) Get away from the touristy steps with the lanterns and go off track and explore the other shops and panoramic views that overlook the shore. Of course the steps is where everyone wants to take the pretty pictures, but I had more fun and discovered more when I started venturing away from the steps and the shops and restaurants were FAR BETTER then the ones along the steps. 2) strongly recommend coming here via a tour group then coming via public bus. I booked a Jiufen tour via Klook for around $US28 and it was well worth it to do some of the other tourist stops, get a seat on a comfortable air conditioned bus and be guided by an tour guide then to rough it out in a public bus. On the way back to Taipei, the people waiting for a bus was insanely long. 3) come here at night if you can. Looks far prettier and magical with the lanterns on. Again the Klook tour I took had that option and the lanterns looked amazing lit up at night.

The place was amazing, but most stores are closed. Maybe I came in the wrong time haha. I came here around 12pm. Or I dont know, maybe the stores are closed bcs of pandemic. But it was great experiences for me with a lot of stairs, as this is my first time visiting Jiufen.

Crowded even on a blazing hot weekday afternoon but very enjoyable still! Tons of souvenir shops, tea sellers as well as food stores. Plenty of stairs so not advised for elderly or people who have mobility issues. Random funky smells here and there too but tolerable. Highly recommend that you get your driver to drop you off at the top area first so you can clear the top shops first before making your way down so you do not have to climb up the stairs

Jiufen Old Street is one of those places that truly does feel like you are in a fantasy world. I wouldn’t be surprised if the town indeed did serve as inspiration for the movie, Spirited Away. Walking up stone stairways and back alleys and finding yourself in a vibrant and bustling street market is a memory that will last a lifetime. And the view of the ocean is spectacular, especially at sunset. Just be prepared to do a lot of stairs… the town is built on the side of a mountain. You can also walk up the winding street which is less steep but you have to be careful with cars.

Super neat. It was filled with shops and street food. The red lanterns were pretty. Unfortunately I was not there to see them light up. The views of the ocean were spectacular. The restaurants also have the view, so you get to see it while you eat lunch. The restaurants are pricey. All in all, it was a fun day.

This place is nice. It's like magical to be here when there's a slight rain. Until it's not... Coming here is not really easy. You have to either take a bus or a taxi. I recommend going with the taxi as it's a lot easier. If you choose to go by the bus, you'll have to fight with people a bit or wait for a long time cause there really are not many buses available. Most of them are full and cannot take more passengers.

One of the most romantic places I have ever been. The street has very interesting cafes, Lots of food and interesting souvenirs. The tea houses are so beautiful. Amazing scenic views of sea and mountain.

Super crowded area, lots of tourists, so be prepare to fight your way through the never-ending line. Lots of slippery steps to navigate, so be warned. Definitely not suitable for wheelchair and/or strollers. View is spectacular though. Many places to take good pictures - I personally liked the bus bay. You can head to any of the tea houses as well. The more popular ones have nice views but a tad pricey too.

Extremely crowded village, and we were there during low season. A lot of Ghibli vibes, this village has a tremendous amount of shops and food option. If you are taking public transports, be aware that a lot of them will be completely full and you might have to wait for several before catching one. Wait for the night lights to make a nice picture.

Second time here with wonderful time. Take bus from MRT in Taipei about 1.20 hrs. drop in front of village. Perfect time to come is weekday and before noon. You will able to see view and get nice picture from here and the most thing is no long Q for everything. We spend time about 3 hours was very nice time.

  • 5/5 Jeremy C. 5 months ago on Google
Kinda unique area. There's a very long hallway here that full with Food stall and also souvenir stall. Selling many unique food that's fair price enough. It's popular among tourist and also local. So yeah people is everywhere in a narrow hallway. But, you can see a great view behind this hallway. Mountain and sea view. Take a picture is a must. There's no need for ticket just enjoy the hallway and bring a lot of money. Cause there's a lot of food will call your money to stay 🤣🤣 Enjoy your visit to Jiufen. Highly recommended!!

  • 5/5 Arno B. 5 months ago on Google
Crowded! But impressive! They’ll drop you off on a hill, you have to walk down (their simply isn’t enough space at the entrance), I’m used to having sidewalks, so being on the road with all the touring cars walking to the old street was a bit scary 😜 but the reward at the end is worth it!

A must visit place. Lots of shops selling local tea, foodstuff and even liquor. The cold brew coffee was top notch and the Taiwan sausages as savoury and delicious as ever. Find a nice cafe with a view and have your lunch there. The people are really friendly and service is great! We spent over 3 hours there simply because we had lots to taste and buy! The relaxing atmosphere at the cafe also caused us to just chug down a couple of beers and sober up with the flower teas. My second trip here - would come back again!

We travelled like the locals, and we started from Geopark to Jiufen. The scenery did not disappoint. The tourist (us) made the moment somewhat ruined. Buy a ticket in advance if you want to do DIY tours. Easy card is highly recommended whilst travelling the public transport.

A lot and by a lot i mean, A LOT of tourists here. Sometimes you got a really nice picture spot but people keep passing when you try to grab a few photos. BUT extremely fun. Interesting structure that interlocking each other. You can find various stores and restaurants here that sell souvenirs and food. Not very hard to get here by bus.

  • 4/5 René O. 2 years ago on Google
The street itself felt a bit underwhelming, I guess that's because everyone hypes this place too much. The views are amazing tho! Completely worthy just because catching the sunset here guarantees some amazing pictures! Hopefully all the shops that were close can open soon, I figure the pandemic hit hard, so maybe that's why it felt kinda empty.

  • 4/5 Jeffrey H. 10 months ago on Google
This area is very beautiful to walk through both during the day and in the evening when it’s all lit up. The tea houses and views are both incredible. We really enjoyed spending a day up here just exploring the hillside town. The only complaint is that it is incredibly crowded at seemingly all times. The crowds were consistent throughout the day and could make getting around a bit difficult.

Coming here during the evening, the red lantern along the streets is really beautiful. Worth to take pictures. One of the signature food to be try in here is the Taro balls. The tea house is also the most popular place to visit. Came here during rainy day, but still able to take the best photo.

This place is full of history, food varieties, souvenir and nature beauty! I and my friend made a 2 day-1 night trip here to fully explore this attraction from different aspects in day time and night time. Daytime is full of visitor of international and Taiwanese visitors. You can travel conveniently by bus, which I recommend more than driving to here due to limited parking spaces. Put on sunscreen, prepare good money for food (lots of food to eat), and camera/phone. You can explore and take pics in the touristy parts in the old town and leave in the evening, and you can also hike (1.5-2hrs ground trip) to the adjacent mountain peak to see the entire Jiufen and panoramic view of the ocean. Night time is going to be a different vibe. Stay if you're not in rush. Highly recommend this place and the hike overall !

Absolutely beautiful here. This is a must see if you are visiting Taiwan. There are some really great vendors and you can get lost here for a day! Which is not a bad thing at all. Great cultural excursion for Japanese empire colonial architecture and atmosphere. Although a huge tourist trap and lots of visitors from all around the world, still very much a must see place. Get some tea in one of the many tea houses along the trail or walk off the path to explore a little.

The place was so crowded. But being a shopaholic, I enjoyed combing through the narrow streets and seeing lots of things to buy and eat. Various souvenirs were sold at very affordable prices and the food there was amazing. The people were so nice and friendly. Alas, the old world village charm was not visible on the cliff side that I was hoping to experience. Maybe you'll only be able to see it at night when the lanterns are on.

It is a nice area with nice view of the sea and coastline. I have visited twice and enjoyed both times. Spirited Away made this place more well known. There are many snack and drink stalls competing for business by giving free samples of their product. Good for a half day visit.

This is on top of the mountain a few mins after you hit the north coast. Keep driving all the way up but don’t miss the waterfall on the way and some other few sights. Parking here is a little scarce and really expensive atleast 200-300nTd so be wary and you have to keep looking around for it. After all this you can find the 7-11 which lead to the entrance of the Jiufen old street. The old street has all the bells and whistles of a Taiwan night market and over the years has become commercialized. Still there are a lot of interesting food, cakes and teas. The speciality is kind of a transparent dumpling with tea which honestly isn’t that special but hey why not try it as your there already. Keep your eye out for good xiao mi jiou, which is the local alcohol based on fruit and rice I got a couple of bottles and they were really delicious. As you keep walking up to the top of the old street you are in for a treat for the view of the ocean and the small town. Be there during sunset and after sunset and there are some breathtaking views. It does get crowded on holidays so maybe you can choose a tea house with a balcony and quietly sip some tea while enjoying the view as these tea houses are available in plentiful. Overall a decent place to go for a quick trip.

Lovely place. The bus driver there is really nice and patient introducing us where we can go and how to get back to take the last one bus. The more late it is. The more beautiful they are. I like the lights among the valley. It makes me have a feeling of mystery.

Jiufen Old Street is a famous place that gives you a "Spirited Away" vibes. You can see a lot of variety of stores that sells souvenirs, post cards, tea, and a lot more. Make sure to bring your sunscreen if you're going to visit on summer for it's scorching hot. My favourite activity includes trying out food, taking videos and photos, collecting stamps, and of course, buying some post cards. Do not miss this place if you're going to visit Taiwan. Enjoy!
