An
authentic
Hawaiian
poke
experience
in
Somerville,
miles
away
from
the
islands.
Only
open
for
three
days
a
week,
Manoa
Poke
is
one
of
the
most
popular
poke
spots
in
the
area.
Every
time
I
passed
by,
I
saw
a
queue
of
eager
patrons
waiting
to
get
their
poke
fix.
I
finally
visited
on
a
Friday,
and
it
was
absolutely
worth
the
wait.
I
opted
for
the
Mix
plate
with
salmon
and
ahi
tuna
in
a
shoyu
marinade.
The
fish
quality
wasn’t
exactly
on
par
with
what
you'd
get
in
Hawaii,
but
the
flavors
were
spot-on.
I
especially
liked
how
the
toppings
were
kept
simple,
letting
the
fish
take
center
stage.
The
cucumber
kimchi
and
green
salad
offered
a
crunch
that
complemented
the
tender,
well-marinated
chunks
of
salmon
and
tuna.
However,
my
favorite
was
the
BBQ
Salmon
Gohan
Special.
Imagine
a
bowl
of
rice
topped
with
shredded
BBQ
salmon
that
brings
together
the
rich
flavors
of
salmon
belly
fat
with
the
subtle
sweet
notes
of
barbecue
sauce.
Every
bite
was
an
absolute
delight,
satisfying
and
flavorful
in
all
the
right
ways.
I
also
decided
to
try
their
Mochiko
Fried
Chicken.
While
it
was
on
the
dry
side—which
isn't
entirely
surprising
for
a
place
that
specializes
in
poke—it
was
still
decent.
What
sets
Manoa
apart
from
other
poke
spots
in
the
area
is
its
commitment
to
authenticity
over
modern
fusion
tweaks.
If
you're
looking
for
an
unadulterated
poke
experience
that
transports
you
straight
to
the
Aloha
State,
Manoa
Poke
Shop
could
very
well
become
your
go-to
spot.
